The Trinity Visitor

In preparing for the election process at this year’s assembly, the transition team has identified the need for additional volunteer help. We are looking for non-voting members to help with the distribution of materials related to the election, ballot collection and ballot counting for bishop. Volunteers would be asked to serve beginning at noon on Thursday, June 16 for an orientation and continue to serve through the conclusion of voting on Saturday. The majority of the time commitment would be around the times of balloting for bishop. Meals for the volunteers would be provided by the

Synod. We are looking for volunteers within the West and Southwest Conferences in particular in order to avoid the expense of housing volunteers. Volunteering as an “election associate” provides a great opportunity to serve the church and be a part of what should be an exciting assembly for the Northern Illinois Synod. Anyone who would like to volunteer should contact Deaconess Cheryl Erdmann at the synod office or by email at [email protected].

Summer is here! And with summer comes vacations. We hope to make visitors to Trinity feel welcome.

You, as a fellow member of Trinity, have an important role in this ministry. A smile, a few words of welcome, an offer to coffee after service (if available), or a willingness to answer a question can make all the difference. This article is meant to inform you about our method and to help you be a part of this important ministry.

Here is our method and how you can help:

For a guest’s first visit: Invite our guest to leave contact information on a yellow card or in some other way. The goal is to have a way for us to contact our guest in the following week. If they wish not to, do not push them to do so. If at the 9am service, you can invite our visitor to coffee downstairs after the service, or mention that the Pastor(s) would be happy to greet our visitor.

If you find that the person you greeted is a member of Trinity, take it as opportunity to get to know them. It is no crime not to personally know all of Trinity’s over 1,000 members.

Mention the gift mugs by the sanctuary entrances and that our guest is welcome to take one along with them. The mugs contain candy along with information about Trinity. Allow them to decide whether or not they wish to take one.

If you wish to invite someone to Trinity as your guest, please feel

free to take a gift mug along with you to give to that person.

In the following week, if we have contact information, our office will forward that information to Trinity’s Team 1330, who will then write or email a note to our guest. Such a note will vary, depending on the guest.

For a guest’s second or following visit:

Invite our guest to leave contact information on a yellow card or in some other way if they have not done so. The goal is to have a way for us to contact our guest in the following week. Again, if they wish not to, do not push them to do so. If at the 9am service, you can invite our visitor to coffee downstairs after the service, or mention that the Pastor(s) would be happy to greet our visitor.

In the following week, if we have contact information, a pastor will contact the person and welcome them to meet or to answer any questions they may have about Trinity.

Our Trinity staff will then place the person on our prospect list, and will start sending information on Trinity events to them for the next 2 months. This will include the Visitor and Friday Notes, depending on what contact information we have.

Please note that our goal is to be positive, to welcome, and to allow our guest “space” as well. Thinking about how you would want to be welcomed can help a lot in how to approach this ministry.

Whenever it is possible always choose fresh fruits and vegetables over canned or processed. Orange juice should be drank in moderate amounts, the high sugar content can cause tooth decay and in excess can cause the wearing off of tooth enamel. Here are a few of the benefits of consuming fresh oranges…. 1. Oranges contain anti-

oxidants. Oranges are rich in citrus limonoids, proven to help fight off a number of cancers- lung, skin, breast, stomach and colon.

2. Oranges can help prevent kidney diseases. Also helps prevent the risk of forming kidney stones.

13 Benefits of Eating Fresh

Oranges

3. Mandarin oranges contain an even larger amount of Vitamin A, helping to reduce the risk of liver cancer.

4. Oranges help lower cholesterol. 5. Oranges are rich in potassium. 6. Oranges help lower your risk of

infection since they help neutralize free radicals, because of the high level Vitamin C they contain.

7. They aid in good eye health and maintaining your level of vision.

8. They help regulate- help prevent high blood pressure. This is due to the flavonoid hesperidin and the magnesium oranges contain.

9. They protect skin cells. Oranges are full of beta-caratene, this helps protect the skin from signs of aging.

10. Oranges alkalize the body. Before you ingest oranges they are acidic but through the digestive process they alkalize your body.

11. Oranges help fight against virus. This is due to the abundance of polyphenols.

12. Oranges relieve or prevent constipation, they are a high fiber food.

13. Oranges provide smart carbs and do not cause a blood sugar spike. The glycemic index of an orange(small) is 55.

About 25 billion oranges are grown each year in America. The orange is the world’s third favorite food flavor, after chocolate and vanilla. Orange cautions…It is important to, at the least, wash oranges in cold running water before use to remove any insecticide that might have been sprayed over orange crops(this is done routinely unless you buy certified organic). There is No orange waste….It is 100% biodegradable. Enjoy Mary Jane Dimmer, RN Trinity Parish Nurse

Have You Tried This? Spiritual Tips for Ordinary Days

James 5:13-18 “Are any among you suffering? They should pray. Are any cheerful? They should sing songs of praise. Are any among you sick? They should call for the people of the church to pray over them. The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; confess your sins and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective.”

The small book of James contains just 108 verses with “powerful encouragement for responsible Christian action” (Lutheran Study Bible). We can use prayer for others as part of our active faith lives. Sometimes, our prayers seem stale or repetitious. Think about using:

Lists to remind you of people for whom to pray.

A prayer order, from people closest to you, moving out toward more anonymous prayers for groups and ministries.

A scripture verse to pray the word of God over these people.

General prayers mixed with specific prayers.

Thankfulness for answers to past prayers.

Birdies for Charity

Birdies for Charity is a program that could enhance your gift/pledge to Trinity Lutheran Church.

When you make a charitable gift to Trinity through Birdies for Charity, their fund supplements your gift with a 5-10% bonus. We would urge members to consider fulfilling the last two months of their planned giving to Trinity for 2016 by sending those dollars through Birdies for Charity. Or perhaps you would like make an additional supplemental gift beyond your regular pledge.

If you would like to learn more about this program or to receive an official pledge form contact the church office. Pledge forms must be received at the tournament office by August 12, 2016. Trinity’s Birdie # is 1328.

“The Virtues of Aging” by Jimmy Carter 305.2 Car

Jimmy has had nearly twenty more years since this was written to follow his virtues. It is also a story of how he and Rosalynn have thought through and chosen to live after the White House years. For them, "the simple things—our own happiness, peace, joy, satisfaction, and the exploration of love in all its forms—are the key to the virtues of life, at any age."

“So , Stick a Geranium in Your Hat and Be Happy” by Barbara Johnson 248.84Joh

Another book with a positive attitude and another testimony to the power of God's love. This author has written several humorous books to "teach you how to release that bubble of joy within you—to claim God's promise to 'fill your mouth with laughter and your lips with shouts of joy.'" The

chapters are short. They include poetry, scripture, and song and sometimes all of those forms within anecdotes that have you shaking your head in understanding.

“All-Star Games from All-Star Youth Leaders” by Bob Buller, Ed. 259 Bul

Now it's time to have some FUN!! These games are any activity "in which one or more people engage for the purpose of fun, amusement or even learning." Games can spice up an evening or get rid of a lot of energy so that participants are ready to sit more at tentatively during a meeting. Chapters include: Icebreakers and Mixers, Cooperative and Competitive Games, Games that Make a Point, Off-the-Wall Games, and Games for Special Days and Events. Each chapter begins with interesting information, guidelines, and basic tips. Each game, written by an experienced leader, begins with summary, then lists supplies, and then gives detailed instructions and some suggestions for

variations. Effective planning; a p p r o p r i a t e p l a c e s a n d participants; consideration for abilities, feelings, cultures and outcomes are good to think about in almost any group activity.

The TLC Book Club meets June 19th at 12:00 noon in the Lounge to discuss “The Year of Pleasures,” by Elizabeth Berg. The Good Book Club meets June 27th at 7:00 p.m. in the Lounge to discuss “The Boston Girl” by Anita Diamant. Join any of the discussion groups. We enjoy welcoming new members!

Library Lines are written by volunteers from Trinity Church. A review of anything from our church’s library, including videos, is welcome. Reviews from the children’s and youth sections are also welcome.

The next meeting of the Trinity Endowment Committee will be on Thursday, July 21st, 2016. All grant requests for this quarterly meeting need to be in the church office two weeks prior to our meeting or by July 7th.

All TLC members in good standing are eligible for a $1,000 scholarship toward expenses related to any higher, continuing education program. An application should be submitted after completion of at least 12 credit hours with a GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale, or provide evidence of satisfactorily completing the course work submitted at a passing level. There is an option to reapply one time for another $1,000 grant during a separate academic year as long as students still meet the above listed standards. (for a total award of $2,000 per student)"

The guidelines and application form are available on our website, tlcmoline.org or in the church office.

Questions may be directed to any member of the committee or to Don Johnson at 797-2237.
