CASE STUDY: GLADIATOR

Maximus was a Roman Army General who was betrayed, sentenced to death, escaped, got captured by slave traders and was eventually sold out as a fighter, a gladiator.

From Maximus’ life we learn how we can make transitions and come out successful though it might be challenging.General Maximus

Decimus Meridius

CASE STUDY: GLADIATOR

Maximus made 5 major transitions and was successful at every one.

We are deliberately not using the term and “life after retirement”using instead because “transitions”the word is a much “transition”more empowering word than the term .“life after retirement”

Life teaches us that nothing is permanent, transition is a natural part of life.

Everyday comes with transitions: Morning, Afternoon, Evening and Night

There are seasonal transitions: Rainy and dry season. Winter, Summer, Spring and Autumn.

Babyhood, Childhood, Adolescence, Adulthood.

Transition is as sure as life itself

LIFE AND TRANSITIONS

Page 7: The Transition Track

It cannot be avoided, it can only be embraced.

Every night we retire to bed to sleep and every morning we wake up refreshed to go into the day's work

In reality nobody can retire you but you. You retire ONLY WHEN YOU CHOOSE TO RETIRE NOT WHEN

YOU ARE TOLD TO.

Always remember –A CLOSED DOOR IS ONLY AN OPPORTUNITY TO EXPLORE,

ENGAGE AND EXCEL IN NEW AREAS.

LIFE AND TRANSITIONS

When changing the gear of a car from one position to another, there is usually a change in pace.

Every transition comes with a change of pace.

The transition from any position will always come with a change of pace.

“Look on every exit as being an entrance somewhere else.” Tom Stoppard

UNDERSTANDING TRANSITIONS: THE PURPOSE OF TRANSITIONS

•Transition is really nothing but change.

•Transitions cannot be avoided, to avoid

transitions is to end up in frustrations.

•Transition is the secret of freshness,

improvement and relevance.

•No matter how challenging transitions are,

without transitions the can be no new

beginnings

•Transition means new beginning

TYPES OF TRANSITIONS

There are two main types of transitions.

1.Voluntary Transition2. involuntary Transition

Page 11: The Transition Track

This is when you have the opportunity to prepare yourself mentally, emotionally, economically, professionally and socially for the transition you intend to make.

As good as this sounds, most people don’t have the opportunity to make effective voluntary transitions.

VOLUNTARY TRANSITION1

Page 12: The Transition Track

This is when you are completely unaware or vaguely aware of a major transition happening to you and you are caught unprepared.

This can be a very devastating experience mentally, emotionally, economically, professionally and socially

Involuntary transitions have even affected some people so much that shortly after they are retired their health begins to fail rapidly and some actually die

INVOLUNTARY TRANSITION2

TRANSITIONS TOOLBOX (cont’d)

Transitions are NEVER terminal: That is why Maximus did not see dying as an option, he knew there were other important things to live for

Transiting from a career or position does not take away your competencies.

Take an inventory of what is yours and what is not yours and build your life and future on what is yours.

WINNIE MANDELA

Winnie Mandela: Winnie thrived as a leader of a The African National Congress Party when it subscribed to an ideology of violence. As her husband began transiting from an ideology of violence to one of dialogue with the white South Africans, she could not embrace the new position.

As a result of her inability to change her ideology, not only did she loose her place in marriage, she lost her position as a respected and progressive leader in the New and Free South Africa.

Transitional Tragedies are people who did not handle the season of transition well and ended up making a failure of their life.

He made successful transitions from the private sector where he worked as a neurosurgeon to becoming a successful author of bestselling non-medical books.

He is currently serving in public service as the U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development

BEN CARSON

Transitional Triumphs are people who had seasons of transitions and were wise and careful enough to handle them well. Such people are icons and an inspiration to many.
