    FOREWORD

Nazaria-e-Pakistan Foundation takes pleasure in presenting thisvolume of extracts from the speeches, anecdotes, andcomments of Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah. He isremembered in South Asia as a man of destiny who weldedtogether scattered crowds of the Muslims, lost in political, economic and social wilderness and turned them into andindependence and sovereign entity. He could not have achievedspectacular and unparalled results without having a clearconceptual framework about the way the new nation shoulddevelop politically and economically. The present rosary ofreadings is intended to enliven our memories of the Quaid-i-Azams essential wisdom, duty, and clarity of thought on issuesof permanent importance for the security, solidarity andprogress of Pakistan, along with his crip and lively comments ofcontemporary personalities.

    Dr. Rafique Ahmed

    PREFACE

Some of these pearlsof wisdom, I have picked up from his speeches for you andoffer them for your study and ponderance. I am sure you willbenefit from them.

    A GIANT AMONG MEN

Mr. Jinnah was something more than Quaid-i-Azam. SupremeHead of the State to the people who followed him. He was moreeven than the architect of the Islamic nation he personallycalled into being So ran the tribute to Quaid-i-Azam, founderof Pakistan, by London Times on August 13, 1948. He wasamong that rare breed of blessed men, whom God allows tochoose a lofty aim in life and allows them the reward of itsfulfillment within their lifetime.

Few great men in Modern History can so closely identifythemselves with shaping the destiny of their countries as Mr.Jinnah with Pakistan. Lenin and Mao, considered to be all-timegreats, only brought new political and social systems in theircountries i.e. Russia and China which were already in existence.Whereas Mr. Jinnah carved out a country and welded togetherthe people into a new nation by his own determination andendeavour. In making a reality of an idea i.e. Pakistan, hesurpassed all contemporary political elite of the world.

Mr. Jinnahs pronouncements were invariably political andreasoned by logic. In individual qualities he had few peersamongst his colleagues. In political acumen and skill none couldcompare with him. His phenomenal popularity was due to onething which was common between him and Muslim India --- thedesire to build a separate homeland. The intensity of devotionand awe with which the Muslims held him can be judged by onesimple factor. He used to address mammoth crowds for hours,

in English, a totally alien language to 90 percent of hisfollowers, without the slightest stir amongst those teemingmillions. This remarkable quality almost touched divinity. Hesimply transcends like an immortal in the polity of politicalleadership.

Jinnah was also a man of the highest moral character. Unlikehis contemporaries, Nehru and Gandhi, whose relationships andscandals of money and women were numerous as mentioned by

Mr. M.O Mathai, Mr. Nehrus private and confidential secretary,in his book Reminiscences of the Nehru Age, Mr. Jinnah stoodout as an incorruptible figure in every sense of the word amongfriends and foes alike.

Such was his stature that a famous English historian BeverleyNicholas described him, as a giant among men in his bookVerdict on India.

JINNAH --- THE ARTISTIC JEWELLERIn February 1938, Quaid-i-Azam observed that primarybranches of the Muslim League had been established in everydistrict, in every town, and every village, and they weregathering the precious stones rubies, sapphires and diamonds, the scattered energies and talents of the Muslim community. He added: When you have got an artistic jeweler to set themit will be a jewel which you will be proud of. Verily Quaid-i-Azm was the artistic jeweler, and he produced the jewel ---Pakistan

A BARRISTER - NOT AN ACTORA judge asked Quaid-i-Azam to speak a little louder. Quaid-i-Azam retorted; I am a barrister, not an actor.

ONES OWN BRILLIANCEA friend of Quaid-i-Azam wanted his son to be attached toQuaid-i-Azam so that he might become as brilliant as Quaid-i-

Azam. Quadi-i-Azam said: Your son can come to work in mychamber, but I cannot transmit any brilliance to him. He mustmake his own brilliance.

QUAID-I-AZAMS PROFESSIONAL INTEGRITYOnce a client entrusted a case to Quaid-i-Azam and asked himabout his fees. Quaid-i-Azam said that his fee was Rs. 500 perhearing. The client said that he could pay only Rs. 5000.Quaid-i-Azam said he would appear only on per day basis. The client paid Rs. 5000. which he had with him. The casewas decided after three hearings, and Quaid-i-Azam refundedRs. 3500. to his client. His client wanted him to retain the

entire amount, but Quaid-i-Azam said that he could not retainanything more than what was actually due to him.

THE MOST BRILLIANT LAWYERSir Stafford Cripps spoke of Quaid-i-Azam as a mostaccomplished lawyer, outstanding amongst Indian lawyers, anda fine constitutionalist.

SIR PATRICK SPENS COMMENT ON QUAID-I-AZAM.Sir Patrick Spen, the last Chief Justice, of undivided India, paid tribute to Quaid-i-Azam in the following words:There is no man or woman living who imputes anythingagainst his honour or his honesty. He was the most uprightperson that I know, but throughout it all, he never, as far as Iknow, for one moment, attempted to deceive any body, as towhat he was aiming at or as to the means he attempted toadopt to get it.

MR. CHAGLA ON QUAID-I-AZAMMr. M.C Chagla, who rose to be the Chief Justice of the HighCourt of Bombay and later became the Foreign Minister ofIndia, assessed the professional skill of Quaid-i-Azam as a

lawyer in the following words; Jinnah was a pure artist in themanner and method of his presentation. Even the mostcomplex facts became simple and obvious when he waved hiswand over them. He could be ferociously aggressive andalmost boyishly persuasive as and when the occasion arose, and what particularly helped him in his advocacy, was theabsolute clear head that he possessed, and on which he justlyprided himself. He had common sense, that most uncommonof qualities in an uncommon degree.

IN THE COURT ROOMMr. Frank Moraes, Chief Editor of The Indian Express hasdescribed Quaid-i-Azam in the following words: Watch him in

the court room as he argues a case. Few lawyers command amore attentive audience. No man is more adroit in presentinghis case. If to achieve the maximum result with minimumeffort is the hallmark of artistry, Mr. Jinnah is an artist in hiscraft. He likes to get down to the bare bones of a brief. Instating the essentials of a case, his manner is masterly. Thedrab courtroom acquires an atmosphere as he speaks. Juniorscrane their necks forward to follow every movement of histall, well groomed figure; senior counsels listen closely; the

    judge is all attention.

NOT A MAHARAJAOnce Quaid-i-Azam stayed with the Raja of Mahmudabad inButler Palace. During the lunch a servant stood as a waiter.

Quaid-i-Azam was lost in his thoughts, and then seeing theman exclaimed: What do you want?. The servant explainedthat he was under orders to wait on him during the lunch. Inthe evening addressing the Raja of Mahmudabad Quaid-i-Azam said: If your man stands over my head like that, I willbe disturbed in my thoughs. I am an ordinary person ofBombay and not a Maharaja. This provided goodentertainment for the guests.

ENCOUNTER WITH LORD MINTOIn 1910 Quaid-i-Azam in the debate on the resolution onindentured labour for Natal said before the Viceroy of India

Lord Minto: If I may say at the outset, it is a most painfulquestion, a question which has raised the feeling of all classesin this country to the highest pitch of indignation and horror atthe harsh and cruel treatment that is meted out to Indians inSouth Africa. Lord Minto interrupted and said: I think that israther too strong a word cruelty. At this Quaid-i-Azamretorted: Well, my Lord, I should feel inclined to use muchstronger language. Quaid-i-Azam was applauded for hiscourageous stand, and the press displayed the incident in bold

    headlines.

BEFORE THE JOINT SELECT COMMITTEEIn 1911 the Joint Select Committee of the Parliament in London

asked Quaid-i-Azam the question: How do you justify anadvance in self-government with a literacy percentage of only12? Quaid-i-Azam replied: Did the lack of literacy prevent youfrom going ahead with your successive Reforms Acts whichcontinuously enlarged the franchise? And if it is good forEngland why should it be bad for India?

IS EDUCATION SEDITION?In 1912, the Elementary Education Bill was opposed by theBritish Government for many reasons, and one of the

grounds advanced was that education would breedsedition. Quaid-i-Azam thundered: Do you really thinkthat education means sedition?

    MRS. SAROJINI NAIDUS TRIBUTE

On the Wakf Validating Bill moved by Quaid-i-Azam in1913, Mrs. Sarojini Naidu paid tribute to Quaid-i-Azam forthis achievement in the following words: His admirableskill and tact in piloting through such an intricate andcontroversial measure - the first instance of a Bill passinginto legislation on the motion of a private member - wonhim not only the appreciation of his colleagues, but also

his first meed of his general recognition from hisco-religionists all over India.

GOKHALE ON QUAID-I-AZAMGokhale, the veteran leader, paid tribute to Quaid-i-Azamin the following words: He has true stuff in him and thatfreedom from all sectarian prejudice which will make himthe best ambassador of Hindu-Muslim unity.

    IDEALS OF LIFE

Quaid-i-Azam held: Trust must ultimately prevail.Faithfulness to the cause will be rewarded. Temptations andallurements for an immediate glory should be disregardedfor the sake of wider and broader issues and nobler ideas.Individual conveniences must be sacrificed for the generalgood.

IN THE EYES OF MRS. SAROJINI NAIDUMrs. Sarojini Naidu paid tribute to Quaid-i-Azam in thefollowing words: Never was there a nature whose other

qualities provided so complete an anti-thesis of its innerworth. Tall and stately, but thin to the point of emaciation, languid and luxurious of habit, Mohammad Ali Jinnahsattenuated form is the deceptive sheath of a spirit ofexceptional vitality and endurance.

MUSLIMS WANT NO FAVOURSIn 1916, Quaid-i-Azam defined the attitude of the Muslimsin the following terms: We want no favours, and crave forno partial treatment. What we want is healthy and fairimpetus to be given to our aspirations and ideals as acommunity and it is the most sacred duty of the

Government to respond to that claim.

SEPARATE ELECTORATESIn 1916, Quaid-i-Azam expressed his views about the

separate electorates as follows: The demand for separateelectorate is not a matter of policy but a matter ofnecessity to the Muslims, who require to be roused fromthe coma and torpor into which they had fallen so long.

ACTION NOT WORDSAt the war conference at Bombay in 1918 presided over byLord Willingdon, Quaid-i-Azam said: If you wish to enableus to help you, to facilitate and stimulate the recruiting, you must make the educated people feel that they are thecitizens of the empire and the Kings equal subjects. Wedont want words. We want action and immediate deeds.

SECRETARY OF STATE MONTAGUSASSESSMENTAbout Quaid-i-Azam the following observations occur in hisdiary published in 1918: Jinnah, young, perfectlymannered, impressive looking, armed to the teeth withdialectics and insistent upon the whole of his scheme --- hewould rather have nothing if he could not get the whole lot.---Chelmsford tried to argue with him and was tied up intoknots. Jinnah is a very clever man, and it is of course anoutrage that such a man should have no chance of runningthe affairs of his own country.

NEVER ARGUE WITH A LADYQuaid-i-Azam had a meeting with Dr. Annie Besant todiscuss a report. He however failed to carry his point withDr. Annie Besant. When he came out of the meeting, hewas asked as to what had happened. He shrugged hisshoulders and said My dear fellow, never argue with alady.

    RESIGNED FROM THE IMPERIAL COUNCIL

AS A PROTESTQuaid-i-Azam said: The passing of the Rowlatt Bill againstthe will of the people has severely shaken the trustreposed by them in British Justice. Further, it has clearlydemonstrated the constitution of the Imperial LegislativeCouncil, which is a legislature but in name, a machinepropelled by a foreign executive. Neither the unanimous

opinion of the non-official Indian members nor the entirepublic opinion feeling outside, has met with the leastrespect. The fundamental principles of justice have beenuprooted, and the constitutional rights of the people havebeen violated, at a time, when there is no real danger tothe State, by an over fretful and incompetent bureaucracy, which is neither responsible to the people nor in touch withreal public opinion, and their sole plea is that the powersthey have assumed will not be abused ...

LICENCE FOR LIBERTYQuaid-i-Azam characterized the Montagu-Chelmsfordreforms as licence for liberty. He said: Licence for liberty

does not compensate for the liberty. What is wanted is truepolitical freedom of the people and no posts and positionsin government.

    WHY QUAID-I-AZAM OPPOSED GANDHIS

    GOSPEL OF NON-COOPERATION?

Quaid-i-Azam said: If we are going to regulate everythingin our country by the doctrine of non-violence andnon-cooperation, then I am afraid we are forgetting humannature. Quiad-i-Azam stood for advancing the cause oftheir people through higher education while Mr. Gandhi inIndia wanted the boys and girls to give up education and

    boycott schools.

    WHY QUAID-I-AZAM RESIGNED FROM THE

CONGRESS?At the Nagpur Session of the Congress in 1920, Mr. Gandhimoved a resolution to change the original creed of steadyconstitutional reforms and national unity to the attainmentof independence by all legitimate means that was todiscard constitutional means, and to bypass the need ofnational unity. Quaid-i-Azam resigned from the Congressand wrote to Gandhi:-

Your methods have already caused split and division in

almost every institution that you have approached hitherto, and in the public life of the country, not only amongstHindus and Muslims but between Hindus and Hindus andMuslims and Muslims and even between fathers and sons;people generally are desperate all over the country andyour extreme programme has for the moment struck theimagination mostly of the inexperienced youth and theignorant and the illiterate. All this means completedisorganization and chaos.

BE SHOT THAN GIVE POWERS TO THEEXECUTIVEIn 1925 a bill was introduced in the Assembly, seeking togive more powers to the executive. Opposing the bill, TheQuaid-i-Azam said: If I were an official, and if I felt thatmy life was in danger, and I was going to be shot down, even like a dog, I should never be a party to a measurewhich will endanger the life and liberty of the innocentpopulation, as this measure undoubtedly does. But rather Iwould stand to be shot down by that wicked gang, thangive power to the executive and the police, which can beabused, and has been abused in the past.

PARTING OF THE WAYSAn Hindu-Muslim accord was arrived at in 1916 under theLucknow Pact. Later the Hindus resiled from this Pact. When the constitutional proposals were drawn under whatcame to be called the Nehru Report , all the safeguardsthat had been conceded for the Muslims under theLucknow Pact were sought to be withdrawn.

Quaid-i-Azam made desperate efforts to save the LucknowPact. The Nehru Report came up for consideration at the AllParties Convention held at Calcutta in December 1928.Quaid-i-Azam attended the Convention. The Hindusinsisted on joint electorate while the Muslims stuck toseparate electorate. Quaid-i-Azam for the sake of nationalunity agreed to joint electorate subject to weightage forMuslims in minority provinces, 33% seats for the Muslimsin the Central Assembly, the introduction of reforms in theNWFP, and the separation of Sind from Bombay.

Even these minor reforms were not agreed to by theHindus. Quaid-i-Azam felt humiliated. That was the end ofQuaid-i-Azams efforts to promote national unity, and ledto the parting of ways between the Hindus and theMuslims.

UNIQUE CONFIDENCEOnce on the eve of elections Quaid-i-Azam addressed apublic meeting at Bombay. He faced a hostile audience. As

he proceeded heckling gathered strength. Quaid-i-Azamsaid: If you dont wish to vote for me, dont vote for me,but listen to me. Gradually the cat calls died down. Whenhe finished the cheers were tumultuous. And in due courseQuaid-i-Azam was elected unopposed.

REFUSED TO BE KNIGHTEDLord Reading offered Quaid-i-Azam Judgeship of a HighCourt, but Quaid-i-Azam refused the offer. Lord Readingnext offered him Law Membership in the Viceroys cabinet. This offer was also refused. Lord Reading then soundedQuaid-i-Azam whether he would agree to be knighted.Quaid-i-Azam refused saying: I prefer to be plain Mr.

Jinnah than Sir Muhammad Ali Jinnah. At a socialfunction Lord Reading wanted Mrs. Jinnah persuade herhusband agree to be knighted. Mariam Jinnnah said: If myhusband accepts knighthood, I will take a separation fromhim.

    WALKED AWAY FROM THE GOVERNMENT

HOUSESome time after his marriage with Mariam Jinnah, Quaid-i-Azam and his wife were invited by Lord Willingdon, thenGovernor of Bombay, to dine with him at the GovernmentHouse. Mrs. Jinnah wore a dress which for some reason didnot please lady Willingdon. She asked an A.D.C. to bring a

wrap for Mrs. Jinnah, as she might be feeling cold. At thisQuaid-i-Azam felt insulted. He said: When Mrs. Jinnahfeels cold, she will say so and ask for a wrap.

With these words Quaid-i-Azam rose from his seat and ledhis wife from the dining hall. Thereafter he never acceptedany invitation from the Government House.

    THE CONFIDENCE OF THE MINORITIES

Quaid-i-Azam said: Unfortunately the majority party inIndia have a bania mentality and they would bargain and

haggle over the matter, thereby failing to win theconfidence of the minorities.

    WHY QUAID-I-AZAM DECIDED TO

SETTLE IN ENGLAND?After the Round Table Conference Quaid-i-Azam settled inEngland. At the Aligarh University in 1938, Quaid-i-Azamexplained the background of this in the following words: Ireceived the shock of my life at the meetings of the RoundTable Conference. In the face of danger, the Hindusentiment, the Hindu mind, the Hindu attitude led me tothe conclusion that there was no hope of unity. TheMussalmans were like dwellers in No Mans Land.

Whenever attempts were made to organize the Muslims, toadies and flunkeys on the one hand, and traitors in theCongress camp on the other, frustrated the efforts. I beganto feel that neither could I help India, nor change theHindu mentality; nor could I make the Mussalmans realizethe precarious position. I felt so disappointed and sodepressed that I decided to settle down in London. Not thatI did not love India, but I felt so utterly helpless.

QUAID-I-AZAM ABOVE TEMPTATIONOn the occasion of the Round Table Conference, the British

Premier Ramsay MacDonald had separate meeting withQuaid-i-Azam. Turning to Quaid-i-Azam he said: Mr.Jinnah, you know that we are hoping to grant self-government to India, and I shall need men to be governorsof Provinces. Quaid-i-Azam interrupted him and said: Mr.MacDonald are you trying to bribe me?

HE WOULD NOT KISS A GIRLOnce Quaid-i-Azam won in a game of forfeits, and the ladywho lost offered herself to be kissed as was the custom.

Quaid-i-Azam said: Well, my lady I waive my right. Icannot make my way to kiss a lady with whom I have notfallen in love.

POLITICS - A GAME OF CHESSIn his conversation with Sir Abdul Qadir, Quaid-i-Azamsaid: Politics is a game of chess. My people have askedme to play the game for them, but they want that everymove that I take I should explain the reason therefore. How can that be feasible? Please ask the nation to haveconfidence in me and let me make such moves as may beexpedient. If they do not have confidence in me it is opento them to have another person to play the chess for

    them.

MANY JINNAHS WILL ARISEQuaid-i-Azam referred to the Muslim students as the

vanguard of the Pakistan Movement. When the studentscheered him he said: Well many Jinnahs will arise fromamong you. When the students referred to the future,Quaid-i-Azam said: I have no fear of the future in yourhands.

TWO PERCENT RESPONSIBILITYCommenting on the provisions of the Government of IndiaAct 1935, Quaid-i-Azam said that it was 2% responsibilityand 98% safeguards and special responsibilities. Accordingto him the new Constitution was merely the perpetuationof a fraud, and against the honour of India.

MOSES STILL IN DARKNESSWhen in February 1935 the Report on Indian ConstitutionalReforms was debated by the Central Legislative Assembly,

the Home Member Sir Henry Craik appealed to accept thereport and said: When there was no light, what happenedto Moses? He was in darkness? The Quaid-i-Azam thoughtthe report was inadequate and said: True, but is there anylight here? Is this the light? I say that Moses is still indarkness?

DEVIL QUOTING THE SCRIPTUREWhen in 1935 the Report on Indian Constitutional Reformswas considered by the Central Legislative Assembly, SirJoseph Bhore quoted Abraham Lincoln. The Quaid-i-Azamdid not think the comparison fair and said: When he

quoted Abraham Lincoln, it reminded me of the devilquoting the scripture.

IMMUNE TO THE CHARM OF LADIESIn 1936 a certain lady visited Quaid-i-Azam frequently andtried to persuade him not to set up any parliamentaryboard. Mr. Tajuddin a veteran Muslim League leader of thePunjab humorously remarked That lady is going very far. Ifear lest you may fall to her charms. Quaid-i-Azam smiledand said I am immune to the charm of ladies; let any onetry as she may.

SERVICE, SUFFERING & SACRIFICEQuaid-i-Azam said: Service, suffering and sacrifice areabsolutely essential conditions before we can achieveanything big and secure our right place in the national life

    DO NOT APPROACH PEOPLE

    THROUGH THEIR STOMACHS

Chaudhri Ali Muhammad Khadim wrote an article that theQuaid-i-Azam did not invite people to social functions at hishouse. Quaid-i-Azam smiled and said: I do not like toapproach people through their stomachs. Giving of partiesis a kind of bribery in return for which peoples support isobtained. I thoroughly detest it.

INNER LIGHT OF MR. GANDHIOnce when Mr. Gandhi turned a political somersault andsought shelter behind his Inner light Quaid-i-Azamremarked: To hell with his inner light; why cant he behonest and admit that he had made a mistake?

TWO SIDES OF THE SAME COINMr. Gandhi held that the Congress did not represent theHindus. The Hindus according to him were represented by

the Hindu Mahsaba. Quaid-i-Azam repudiated: It is thesame coin with a stamp on one side of the HinduMahasaba, and on the other that of the Congress, andwhat one speaks out openly the other practices.

    A COMMUNALIST?

In 1939 Quaid-i-Azam said: Gentlemen! if for betteringthe conditions of the teeming millions of this country; if foruplifting the social, economic and political standards of theMuslims of India I am branded as a communalist, I assureyou, Gentlemen, that I am proud to be a communalist. Some Hindu students interrupted and cried out Gandhiji KiJai. BE A LITTLE HINDUMuahmmad Hanif Azad was a motor driver of Quaid-i-

Azad meaningfully referred to the coming Eid with aview to getting some extra money from Quaid-i-Azam.Quaid-i-Azam realized the trick, and humorously said:Well you have become a Muslim all of a sudden; be a littleHindu.

THE UNIVERSITYS HONOURDr. Ziauddin Ahmad at one time Vice-Chancellor of AligarhUniversity has related an anecdote highlighting theintergrity and incorruptibillity of Quaid-i-Azam. An

Insurance Bill was under discussion in the CentralAssembly. Dr. Ziauddin was a member of the Assembly, and a business magnate approached him that if he moveda particular amendment to the bill, a donation of one lakhrupees would be paid to the funds of the Aligarh University.Dr. Ziauddin said that he would give his reactions to theoffer after consulting Quaid-i-Azam. When Quaid-i-Azamwas consulted he advised that the Universitys honourshould not be compromised by accepting a donation. Dr.

Ziauddin accordingly declined the offer, and refused tomove the amendment.

QUAID-I-AZAM AND RELIGIONIn his letter dated Ist January 1940, addressed to Mr.Gandhi, Quaid-i-Azam dwelt upon the subject of religionand politics in the following terms: I could not be leadinga religious life unless I identified myself with the whole ofmankind, and that I could not do unless I took part inpolitics. The gamut of mans activities to-day constitutes anindivisible whole. You cannot divide social, economic, political and purely religious work into water tightcompartments. I do not know any religion apart from

human activity. it provides a moral basis to all otheractivities which they would otherwise lack, reducing life toa maze of sound and fury signifying nothing.

ON GHANDHIAN POLITICSIn a letter addressed to Mr. Gandhi, Quaid-i-Azam

assessed the politics of Gandhi in the following terms; It isdue partly to the fact that you are living secluded life atSegaon, and partly because all your thoughts and actionsare guided by inner voice that you have very littleconcern with realities, or what might be termed by anordinary mortal practical politics. I sometimes wonderwhat can be common between practical politics andyourself, between democracy and the dictator of a politicalorganization of which he is not even a four-anna member. But that is, I suppose, because you do not consider theCongress worthy of your membership.

    MAULANA ABUL KALAM AZAD

    A CONGRESS SHOW BOY

In 1940 Maulana Abul Kalam Azad as President of theCongress wanted to see Quaid-i-Azam. Quaid-i-Azamreplied: I refuse to discuss with you by correspondence orotherwise as you have completely forfeited the confidenceof Muslim India. Can you not realize that you are made aMuslim show boy Congress President to give it colour thatit is national and deceive foreign countries. You represent

neither Muslims nor Hindus. The Congress is a Hindu body.If you have self-respect resign at once.

    MR. GANDHI IS FRIVOLOUS

Mr. Gandhi said: To me Hindus, Muslims, Parsis, Harijans, are all alike. I cannot be frivolous while I talk of Quaid-i-Azam. He is my brother. Quaid-i-Azam referred to thisstatement of Mr. Gandhi and said: But I think he isfrivolous. He calls me his brother but he has three voteswhile I have only one vote. I am only a poor brother, and apoor brother is indeed no brother.

DIVIDING THE BABYWhen the Pakistan resolution was passed in 1940, Mr.Rajgopalacharya observed in a statement that this was like

dividing the baby in King Solomons parable. On thisQuaid-i-Azam observed: Mr. Rajgopalacharyas argumentsof dividing the baby and the parable of King Solomon havegone beyond the zenith of his intellectual powers. Thisanalogy he wants to apply to our proposals. Surely, India isnot the sole property of the Congress and if the realmother was to be discovered it would be the Dravidiansand still further the Aborigines. It would neither be theAryans nor the Musalmans.

RAJGOPALACHARYA HAS NO MINDIn the course of his statement on the Pakistan ResolutionMr. Rajgopalacharya said Indeed not even Tipu Sultan orHyder Ali or Aurangzeb or Akbar, all of whom lived duringthe days when difference seemed more deep rooted thannow, imagined that India was anything but one andindivisible.

On his Quaid-i-Azam observed: Yes, naturally they did soas conquerors and paternal rulers. Is this the kind ofgovernment Mr. Rajagopalachrya does still envisage? Anddid the Hindus of those days willingly accept the rule ofthese great men? I may or may not be suffering from adiseased mentality, but the statement of Mr.Rajagopalcharya and his criticism of the Lahore Resolutionindicate that in him there is no mind left at all.

POWER OF WOMENIn March 1940, Quaid-i-Azam addressed the students of aCollege for Girls in Lahore. He said that two powers werewell known, the powers of the pen and the sword, but thatthere was the third power as well, and that was the powerof women. It was this power which guided men to makeuse of the powers of pen and the sword.

VIVISECTION OF INDIAWhen the Pakistan Resolution was passed at Lahore in1940, Mr. Gandhi and other Congress leaders criticized it

on the ground that it aimed at the vivisection of India, andat cutting the body into two halves.

    Quaid-i-Azam said in reply:

India is divided and partitioned by nature. Where is thecountry which is being divided? Where is the nation, which is being denationalized? Indian nation and CentralGovernment do not exist.

WHEN QUAID-I-AZAM MISSED IQBALAfter the Pakistan resolution was passed in March 1940,Quaid-i-Azam turning to some of his friends said: Iqbal is

no longer amongst us and he would be happy to know thatwe did exactly what he wanted us to do.

A ROSE IS ALWAYS A ROSEMr. Gandhi asked what prefix he should use with referenceto the name of Quaid-i-Azam. Quaid-i-Azam quipped. What is in a prefix after all; a rose called by any othername would smell just as sweet.

DEFINITION OF PAKISTANWhen the Pakistan resolution was passed, an accusationlevelled against Quaid-i-Azam by the Congress was that hehad not defined Pakistan. Quaid-i-Azam said:

The vital point is that the principle of separation should beaccepted; the rest would follow automatically.

DID HINDUSTAN BELONG TO THE HINDUS?When the Muslims raised the demand for Pakistan, theHindus resisted the demand as if Hindustan belonged to

the Hindus. In his presidential address at the PunjabMuslim Students Federation on 2nd March 1941, Quaid-i-Azam observed that it was an utter nonsense to say thatHindustan belonged to the Hindus. It was in the possessionof the British, and as such the demand for Pakistan wasmade to the British, and not to the Hindus who never tookthe whole of India. It was the Muslims who took India andruled for 700 years. It was the British who took India fromthe Musalmans, and the Muslims wanted back from the

British only such territories in which they were in amajority.

    SOUL OF MUSLIM NATIONQuaid-i-Azam exhorted the Muslims to adopt the followingmotto:Money is lost, nothing is lost;Courage is lost much is lost;Honour is lost most is lost;Soul is lost all is lost;

PAKISTAN POSITIONQuaid-i-Azam expounded the stand of the Muslims forstruggle of Pakistan in the following terms: We know thatour cause is a righteous one. We are asking for justice and

fairplay. We have no designs upon our sister communities. We want to live in this land as a free and independentnation.

WHY WAS QUAID-I-AZAM SO POPULAR?Dr. Zia-uddin, Vice-Chancellor of Aligarh University hasrelated that once the Viceroy Lord Linlithgow asked him

why was Quaid-i-Azam so popular with the Muslims? Dr.Ziauddin replied. When the British forgetting all theirpledges had thrown the Muslims at the mercy of theCongress, it was Quaid-i-Azam alone who had the courageto stand up and fight for the rights and interests of theMuslims.

HAPPINESS IS A TONICA poet in a poem observed that Quaid-i-Azam was growingyounger. Referring to this poem Quaid-i-Azam said: If Iam getting younger and I believe me I am - it is the feelingof happiness over being treated by the people of India withsuch regard and affection. Happiness is a tonic.

QUAID-I-AZAMS FAITH IN THE MASSESWhen the Pakistan struggle was launched some workerswere pessimistic about the attitude of the intelligentsia.Quaid-i-Azam merely said Dont worry. The intelligentsiamay appear somewhat sluggish, but the Muslim masses by

their dynamism are creating a situation which will soonlead our intelligentsia to roll up their sleeves and jump intothe fray.

ROLE OF WOMEN IN PAKISTANBegum Geti Ara Bashir Ahmad requested Quaid-i-Azam toelucidate whether in Pakistan women would be confined totheir homes. Quaid-i-Azam replied categorically: Tell youryoung girls, I am a progressive Muslim. I, therefore, takemy sister alongwith me to the backward areas likeBaluchistan and the NWFP, and she also attends thesessions of the All India Muslim League and other publicmeetings. Insha Allah, Pakistan will be a progressivecountry in the building of which women will be seen

A PUNABI MUSLIM RAJPUTOnce Quaid-i-Azam was the guest of the Nawab of Baghpatin Meerut district. One day in lighter vein the Nawab

enquired of Quaid-i-Azam Your family is that of theKhojas-businessmen. From where did you inherit this dashand fight? Thereupon Quaid-i-Azam smiled and said:Nawab Sahib, I am a Punjabi Muslim Rajput. One of myancestors migrated from Montgomery (Sahiwal) in thePunjab to Kathiawar. There he married a Khoja girl, andbecame a Khoja.

VITAL PRINCIPLES OF PAKISTANAfter meeting all the Indian leaders, the verdict of BeverleyNichols a famous British author, was that Quaid-i-Azamwas the most important man in Asia. At the interview Mr.Nichols asked Quaid-i-Azam how he would describe thevital principles of Pakistan. Quaid-i-Azam said that the vital

principle was that the Muslims are a nation and thenadded: The one thing which keeps the British in India isthe false idea of a united India as preached by Gandhi. Aunited India is a British creation, a myth which has causedendless strife. As long as that strife exists, the British havean excuse for remaining.

Mr. Nichols asked Quaid-i-Azam whether he wanted theBritish to divide and quit? The Quaid-i-Azam said Yes.

You have put it very neatly.

DIALOGUE WITH A GIANTBeverly Nichols visited India in 1943, and wrote a bookVerdict on India. The chapter in the book about Quaid-i-

Azam was captioned Dialogue with a Giant. One of thequestions asked by Mr. Nichols was about the economicviability of Pakistan. Quaid-i-Azam answered the questionin the following terms: What conceivable reason is thereto suppose that the gift of nationality is going to be aneconomic liability. How any European can get up and saythat Pakistan is economically impossible after the treaty ofVersailles is really beyond my comprehension. The greatbrains who cut Europe into a ridiculous patchwork of

conflicting and artificial boundaries are hardly the people totalk economics to us.

ADORATION BY THE POORQuaid-i-Azam related that once he was the guest of a bigSeth. When about to depart he offered some money to thebutler who had served him. The butler refused the offer.Quaid-i-Azam thinking that the refusal was presumably due

to the meagerness of the amount, doubled it. The butlerrefused again. Quaid-i-Azam further raised the amount butthe butler refused again, Quaid-i-Azam enquired from theman the cause of this refusal, and he said You are servingthe cause of the nation, and we are much beholden to you.How can we accept any compensation from you for a paltryservice. WOMEN STATUSI wish to impress on you that no nation can rise to theheights of glory unless your women are side by side with

But let us try to raise the status of our womenaccording to our own Islamic idea and standards. There isno sanction anywhere for the deplorable conditions inwhich our women have to live. You should take yourwomen along with you as comrades in every sphere of lifeavoiding the corrupt practice of western society. You

    (Address at Aligarh University 1944.)

PAKISTAN HAS ALWAYS BEEN THEREQuaid-i-Azam said Pakistan was not the product of theconduct or misconduct of the Hindus. It had always beenthere; only they were not concious of it. Hindus andMuslims, thought living in the same towns and villages, had never blended into one nation; they had alwaysremained two separate entities.

    (Address at Aligarh University 1944.)

FREEDOM FOR BOTHAs for the British, they never give anything except under

stress. It is very difficult to corner John Bull. If India had anoverwhelming majority of Musalmaans there would havebeen no difficulty in cornering John Bull. But the trouble is ifI go to grapple with John Bull the Hindus come to hisrescue, and when the Hindus go to corner him to force theirdemands which are detrimental to us we cannot join them.If the Hindu demand is accepted it means freedom for theHindus but enslavement for the Musalmaans. If my demandis accepted it means freedom for both.

RIGHT OF SELF-DETERMINATIONWho is the author of this new formula that every

Either it is colossal ignorance or mischief and trick.Let me give them a reply that the Mussalmans claim theright of self-determination because they are a nationalgroup on a given territory which is their homeland and inthe zones where they are in a majority. Therefore, inconstitutional language, they are characterized as asubnational group who cannot expect anything more thanwhat is due from any civilized government to a minority.

The British also thought the same way.In his speech at Aligarh in March 1944. Quaid-i-Azam,referred to Lord Wavells theory of the geographical unityof India and said: that they in Aligarh, stood in no need of

    THE MAP THAT CHANGED

    THE COURSE OF HISTORY

When Lord Linlithgow was the Viceroy of India, in aninterview with Quaid-i-Azam one day he suggested that ifthe Muslim League did not insist on partition he could getfor the Muslims adequate safeguards. Quadi-i-Azam said:that he would answer the question at the next interview. When Quaid-i-Azam went to see the Viceroy again hecarried a map of Pakistan as drawn in embroidery by ayoung girl of Rohilkhund. Quaid-i-Azam showed this map to

the Viceroy who praised the work of embroidery. Quaid-i-Azam told the Viceroy that this map had been presented tohim by a young girl of eleven years only belonging to aconservative family. Quaid-i-Azam added, This wouldshow that the idea of Pakistan has gathered roots and hadcaught the imagination of the Muslims. Now this ideacannot be changed. The Viceroy nodded in agreement.

THE MOST HANDSOME MANQuaid-i-Azam was a very handsome person. Lord Wavellsaid of him Mr. Jinnah was one of the handsomest men Ihave ever seen; he combined the clear cut, almost Grecianfeatures of the West with oriental grace and movement.

The world is moving so fast that if you donot educate yourselves you will be not only completely leftbehind, but will be finished up. The Holy Prophet hadenjoined his followers to go even to China in the pursuit ofknowledge. If that was the commandment in those dayswhen communications were difficult, then, truly, Muslims,

ONE SWALLOW DOES NOT MAKETHE SUMMER

The stand of Quaid-i-Azam was that in the interimgovernment in 1946, all the Muslims should be thenominees of the Muslim League. This stand was criticizedon the ground that there were Muslims in the Congress andother organizations as well. Quaid-i-Azam explained thatthe total number of Muslim members in all the ProvincialLegislatures and the Central Legislature was about 600 andout of these 550 were Muslim Leaguers. Quaid-i-Azamargued that there cannot be unanimity in this world. He

said One swallow does not make the summer, nor do afew hundred Muslims in the Congress make the Congresseither a body representative of India as a whole or supportits claim to have any voice in the selection of the membersof the Muslim block.

MR. GANDHI --- AN ENIGMAQuaid-i-Azam analyzed Gandhis tactics in the followingterms: The first question is why did Gandhi as one of theleaders of the recognized parties go to Simla? Having gonethere, why did he not attend the Conference? The reason issimple. It is to play the role of a wirepuller. He was notmerely content with being an adviser of the Congress andits working committee, but he constituted himself as anadviser of the Viceroy and through him the British Nation.Mornings and evenings, the Working Committee meetingstook place and he was the guiding spirit behind them. When it suits him, he represents no body, he can talk inindividual capacity; he is not even a four Anna member ofthe Congress; he undertakes fast to decide the politicalissue; he reduces himself to zero and consults his innervoice; yet when it suits him, he is supreme dictator of theCongress! CONCEPT OF SACRIFICEThe Congress accused the Muslim League of having madeno sacrifices. Quaid-i-Azam replied. We are accused ofhaving made no sacrifices for our goal. I am afraid we

the immediate acceptance of the plan. Quaid-i-Azam saidthat he was not competent to convey his acceptance on hisown account, and that he had to consult his workingcommittee. congratulation in the course of which he said:

You will recall that when you were young, one day youcame home excited and told father that some palmist hadseen your hand and held that it was the hand of anemperor and that you would found a state. This prophecyhas now been fulfilled.

THROWING WATER ON DUCKS BACKAt a press conference held at New Delhi on 4th July 1947,Quaid-i-Azam answered certain questions which were putto him regarding the nature of the state of Pakistan. Hewas asked whether Pakistan would be a secular or

theocratic state? He said, You are asking me a questionthat is absurd. I do not know what a theoretic statemeans? A correspondent suggested that a theocratic statemeant a state whereunder people of a particular religioncould be full citizens.

    To this Quaid-i-Azam replied:

Then it seems to me that what I have already said is like

throwing water on ducks back. When you talk ofdemocracy, I am afraid you have not studied Islam. Welearnt democracy thirteen centuries ago.

KEEPING HEADS UPQuaid-i-Azam wanted the people to realize whatrevolutionary change had taken place because of the

establishment of Pakistan. He exhorted the people Keepyour heads up as citizens of a free and independentsovereign state. SOUND MINDS IN SOUND BODIESQuaid-iAzam as the first patron-in-chief of the PakistanOlympic Association gave the following message to theyouth: Build up physical strength not for aggression, notfor militarism, but for becoming fighting fit, all your life andall the time in every walk of life of your nation whereveryou be and always to be a force for peace, international

amity and good will. Remember to win is nothing, it is theeffort and the spirit behind the effort that counts.

ECONOMIC SYSTEM FOR PAKISTANQuaid-i-Azam in his inaugural address on the opening ofthe State Bank of Pakistan said:

The economic system of the West has created almostinsoluble problems for humanity and to many of us itappears that only a miracle can save it from disaster that isnow facing the world. It has failed to do justice betweenman and man, and to eradicate friction from theinternational field. On the contrary, it was largelyresponsible for the two world wars in the last half century. The western world inspite of its advantages ofmechanization and industrial efficiency is today in a worsemess than ever before in history. The adoption of westerneconomic theory and practice will not help us in achievingour goal of creating a happy and contented people. Wemust work our destiny in our own way and present to theworld an economic system based on true Islamic conceptsof equality of man and social justice. We will thereby befulfilling our mission as Muslims and giving to humanity themessage of peace which alone can save it and secure thewelfare, happiness and prosperity of mankind.

QUAID-I-AZAM --- THE MUJADIDIn January 1959 at a meeting held in the memory of

Quaid-i-Azam in London, Sir Olaf Caroe, at one timeGovernor of N.W.F.P. summed up the character andhistoric role of the Quaid-i-Azam in the following terms:Jinnah was much more than a politician. Perhaps that iswhy politicians do not all speak well of him. In Muslimterms he was almost a Mujaddid, one of those performerssent once in a century, as the pious believe, to reinterpretthe faith and guide the believer on the true path. Thatoutwardly he looked a little like an Englishman may be to

us here not a derogation but a challenge. The chiefimpression that remains is one of integrity and singlenessof purpose. An undoubted outward pride of demeanour wasin reality the expression of a sort of inner uprightness thatwould not suffer the second-rate or compromise withsubtlety or devious tactics in any shape or form. It was theundeviating pursuit of what was to him the right and notmerely the political end that led to Jinnahs remarkablesuccess.
