The annual TRAIL BIAZER is published as a record of Club activities during the year, and becomes a part of the history of the Club. Back in 1956 a g~oup of people were working on the construction of the Yellowwood Trail, a 22 mile cross country trail in Brown County. They met in January of 1957 for the purpose of creating a hiking club. The Indianapolis Hiking Club will celebrate its 48th birthday in January of 2005. And it has faithfully followed the ideals of the founders as stated in the Club - · Constitution "The Purpose of the Club shall be the encouragement of the love of nature; the dis.semination of knowledge of the attractions of the out-of-doors; the promotion of outdoor recreation in the form of Hikes and Outings; and the sponsoring of other activities incidental to the foregoing".

The Club has grown and changed through the years, but has remained faithful to its primary objectives. Last year the Club scheduled over a thousand hikes. There were many overnight trips and outings throughout the country. Also the summer picni~ and the annual Holiday party. There were two General Assemblies open to the entire membership. Total membership as of O~tober 1, 2004 was 685.

A volunteer organization such as ours needs dedicated people as officers. We have been most fortunate over the years, and last year was no exception. Listed below are the

ANNUAL HOLIDAY PARTY: This year the party was held at 2:00 PM in the afternoon at the Clermont's Lion Club Hall. What a great social hour greeting old friends at this time of the s~ason. Another great pitch-in buffet, with lots of special recipes. Pat Lawler hosted the "Tacky Gift Exchange" again this year and there were lots of unusual and tacky gifts. Lots of singing, and even Santa showed up.

ANNUAL SUMMER PICNIC: The last Saturday in July found us at Shelter '-B" in Eagle Creek Park. What a great day! After the morning hike we assemlHed in the Shelter with the rest of the late arrivals for the old-fashioned pitch-in. Lots of talking and socializing with old and new friends.

GENERAL ASSEMBLY MEETINGS: Informational meetings for all members with interesting programs. The meeting March 11th featured Glory-June Creiff pre$eriting a Slide Show on "New Deal in Indy Parks". The election of officers for the new year was conducted at the meeting on September 9th. Also 25 year certificates were awarded to Robert Pedigo and Dave Rockey. The program featured Les Wadzinski of the Hoosier National Forest .. in a return engagement. He talked about Wildlife and Forest Management in South America. Refreshments are served at General Assembly meetings and this is a good time to meet and talk with old and new friends.

CLUB SPONSORED WEEKEND OUTINGS

McCORMICK'S CREEK STATE PARK - Some 67 hikers enjoyed the trails in this lo.vely ·'State Park during a beautiful weekend in early March. Also 30 day hikers came down to join with the overnighters. Lots of hiking between the meals and other activities. A most enjoyable social hour in the Oak Room. That eve~~ after supper, Marquita Manley of the Naturalist Staff, gave us a most interesting program.

MEMORIAL DAY AT GNAW BONE CAMP - This was the 35th annual Memorial Day Weekend at Gnaw Bone for the Club. Some 67 people spent the weekend at Camp, and 50 . day hikers came down to do some hiking with us. The Johnson County Folk Singers entertained us Sunday evening. Sunday night about 10:00 PM a violent wind storm swept through the Camp, blowing down lots of trees . Two of the cars were damaged by falling trees. The next morning we all watched as the chain saw gang worked on clearing the area. They stopped long enough for us to have our usual piedge of allegiance around the flag as Allen Pekar blew Taps in the background. Mary Ann and Bob led most of the hiking. And we all enjoyed the good camp food. We all enjoyed the weekend at this beautiful area in Brown County.

NEW HARMONY - LABOR DAY WEEKEND - What an interesting town to visit. 67 members and guests enjoyed the area over this Labor Day. Varied hiking in the town and along the Wabash River. Mafy Ann and Bob led the hiking at Harmonie State Park, a few ~iles out of town. Sunday evening found us at a lovely buffet in the Conference Center. Lois Gray, formerly of the State Naturalist Service, gave us a talk and show on the area. A video of Isle Royale National Park was also shown. The New Harmony Inn was ablaze with. flowers and gardens, and we enjoyed the Red Geranium restaurant next door.

OUT OF TOWN HIKES INVOLVING OVERNIGHT LODGINGo

DOOR COUNTY WISC~NSIN - Tom and Juan Marie Chevalier led a group of hikers in early October. They hiked .at Newport State Park, Peninsular State Park, and on Rock Island. One highlight was a traditional Door Coun~y Fish Boil. This event covered October 2,3,&4. of 2003.

CALIFORNIA HERE WE COME - Pat Lawler arranged this tl!'ek to the West Coast from March 28th to April 3rd. She had arranged hotel rooms and vans for transportation. They visited Pasadena and the Rose Bowl. Hiked the Mount Lowe-Sam Merrill Trail and the Gabrielino Trail. Visited downtown Los Angeles. Hiked the Topanga Canyon and the Chaned Trail. Pat kept them busy, but allowed a little time for sightseeing.

ANNUAL SMOKY MOUNTAINS WEEKEND - Jean Ballinger and Jim Shoufler led most of the hikes. Chuck Combs and Ka~hy Miller led a photographic hike. 91 members, 9 guests, and 5 children attended this event. Some hikes included - Little River Trail - Porter Creek - Abrams Falls -Little Greenbrier Schoolhouse - Ramsay Cascade - Alum Cave Bluffs -Jolies Creek & Miry Ridge. Lots of good restaurants in Gatlinburg. The Smokies are beautiful this time of yeasr

SOUTH BEND HIKE - Led by Bobbie Mattasits and Ron Mutzl, some 34 hikers explored South Bend. They hiked at Potawatomi Park, and the River Walk, the Notre Dame Campus, and St . Joseph Lake. Saw some of the Studebaker mansions and football hall of fame.

REVIEW OF THE HIKING ACTIVITIES OF a'.HE YEAR

This was more or less a typical year for weather in Indiana". The fall was beautiful, a little warm at times, with some rainy~·day.~ :t Snow in December, with more snow in January and February . Some hikes were cancelled because of ice and snow. March and April were average and May was a little hot at times. Our summer months were average for Indiana -some hot and humid and then a little rainy season. July was hotter than usual early. August and September had a mixture of beautiful days along with some rain.

Hikes were schedule in all of our State Parks and Forests - including Turkey Run, Brown County, Clifty Falls, Spring Mill, Summit Lake, Mounds, McCormick's Creek, Shades, and Oubache. We hiked in the following forests - Yellowwood, Jackson, Clark, and Morgan-Monroe. Also Hoo-sier National Forest.

We walked with several Volksmarches. Some special places of interest were the Knobstone Trail, and some of the State Reservoirs. The Tippecanoe Battlefield and Tecumseh State Park were new areas.

Many . of our weekday hikes were in Indianapolis, including Ft. Harrison, Eagle Creek Park, Holliday Park, Monon Trail, the canal, the Art Museum and a couple of Malls. Out of town weekday hikes included Zionsville, Franklin, Shadyside in Anderson, Clermont.

The above is just an overview of some of the Club's activities during the year. Please consult your copies of the schedules for a full detail for all the hiking activity.

One of the more interesting hikes developed last year was an idea by Tom Kapostasy to walk across Indiana. He called it BACK ROADS ACROSS INDIANA. This involved a series of 10 hikes over a couple of years. Number one was November 9th, 2003. About every 2 months another one was scheduled. These have proved to be very popular as the hikers got to see the rural side of Indiana as they hiked from border to border.

The publication of the TRAIL BLAZER is possible because -of the hard work of many dedicated people. Thanks to our pathfinders last year - Cindy West and Ed Wright for presenting such an interesting and creative schedule of hikes. Cherie Voege deserves many thanks for all her efforts in attracting members. And a special thanks to Ellen Mutzl for all the work she does in keeping track of the mileage of each member. Many of you do not realize the time and effort Ellen puts in making sure the mileage reports are accurate. This involves tr.yflilg te decipher''hen specks that are supposed to be names on the sig!,1-UP sheets for each hike. We owe all tthese people thanks.

Following the member listing is the detail of the chi~dren who hiked during the past year with their mileage and accumulated mileage.
