PREVENTATIVE TRAINING INFROMATIONThe company has examined all substances which you are required to use as part of your work tasks. This means that the safest available substance is used for each task.The head of department should have a list from the personal protective equipment assessment manual highlighting the job tasks and the particular PPE to be worn.The necessary personal protective equipment has been provided for use when carrying out these tasks and must be worn by everyone at all times.The personal protective equipment is kept within the PPE storage box for your department.Prior to use, you should closely inspect all personal protective equipment for defects and report any findings immediately to your manager. Failure to do this could result in serious injury to yourself. Failure to wear the relevant PPE may lead to disciplinary action being taken.SUGGESTED TRAINING FREQUENCY:6 MONTHLY

PREVENTATIVE TRAINING INFORMATIONVisual checks of all electrical equipment are carried out every 3 months by the heads of department. A full detailed inspection is carried out by Engineering Inspections every three years.Check for split cables, exposed coloured wiring, damaged plugs, equipment damage, signs of fire damage on the equipment, loose wiring at plug or equipment junction, overheating of plugs or overloaded sockets, dust build up and liquid spillage when you use equipment. Report any findings to your manager immediately. Defective portable equipment is responsible for 36% of all electric shocks within work places.

PREVENTATIVE TRAINING INFORMATIONTrailing cables are common causes of trips but are easily avoided.The force of someone tripping on a cable can lead to equipment damage, possible electrocution, fire and bodily injury.Report any trailing cables to your supervisor.When moving or using equipment, have regard to its positioning to ensure that the cables are not left in a dangerous position.Use rubber covers when positioning equipment in regularly used areas. If none are available report this matter to your supervisor and securely tape down cables as a temporary measure.

Do not use threatening behaviour or language towards any guests.Remember that certain injuries arising from acts of public violence are reportable to enforcement authorities and, this is a legal requirement, you should ensure that you give full details of any such incident to your manager.

This list will be kept up- to -date at all times for your reference.You must also be aware of the location of the first aid boxes and the accident book within the branch. These first aid boxes are audited on a monthly basis to ensure that suppliers within them are kept up-to-date.Remember to report any incidents or accidents immediately to your manager and to seek assistance from the first aiders whenever necessary.

PREVENTATIVE TRAINING INFORMATION Note – Since this was written, anti-smoking regulations were brought in - 2006 for

Scotland, 2007 for England and Wales e.g. for England from 1st July 2007, all public places and workplaces became smoke-free, with just a limited number of exceptions, under the Smoke-free (Premises and Enforcement) Regulations 2006.Carry out regular visual inspections of all public areas for signs of discarded/smouldering cigarettes, paying particular attention below furniture, to the furniture itself, and to refuse bins.When emptying ashtrays, ensure that all cigarettes are fully extinguished before placing contents into the bin.Bar serveries and staff rooms should be provided with metal bins specifically for cigarette disposals.

PREVENTATIVE TRAINING INFORMATIONThere are certain areas within the hotel which are designated as being dangerous i.e. “hard hat” areas, plant rooms, rooms containing electric switchboards, gas supplies, emergency battery rooms etc.These areas will normally be signed “no unauthorised access”.If you have to access any of these rooms for any reason, follow the appropriate safety signage and always lock the door behind you. Even if you have to leave the room for a short period, always lock the door and never leave any of these areas open and unattended at any time.

PREVENTATIVE TRAINING INFORMATIONIt is imperative that you follow a safe procedure when changing light bulbs.

1. Isolate light fitting from power i.e. switch off and put up warning sign indicating to people not to turn power on.

2. Ensure you have a safe means of accessing area i.e. steps and place rubber mat on the floor.

3. Remove and replace light bulb.4. Switch on the power and remove warning sign and equipment.

Remember, never get anyone else to test it while you are located adjacent to the bulb or holding it in place.

PREVENTATIVE TRAINING INFORMATIONA safe system of work requires to be followed when dealing with any body secretions or body fluid spillages such as urine, excreta and blood. If any of these substances are handled incorrectly, the potential risk of diseases transferring to you are great. Accordingly, the following steps should be followed:-

1. Position a cone in the area to warn others of the danger.2. Do not handle any bodily fluids or substances unless appropriate

disposable gloves are being worn.3. Mop up spillages with a suitable disposable material e.g. paper towels.4. If possible, mop up the floor thoroughly using a sanitising solution and

leave the cone in place until the area is dry.5. If this is not possible, scrub the affected surface i.e. carpet with a cloth

soaked in sanitising solution.6. Report any incidents of body fluid or substance spillage immediately to

your manager.Only qualified first aiders within the branch should attempt to give mouth to mouth resuscitation and this should only be done using a disposable mouth piece.SUGGESTED TRAINING FREQUENCY:6 MONTHLY

Always be vigilant and look out for defective or missing signs, paying particular attention to stairways and final exit doors.On no account should anything be stored on fire escape routes or adjacent to fire exit doors at anytime.Anyone found blocking the fire exits or fire escape routes, even temporarily, may be disciplined.
