Recently, I read an article that advised restaurant owners to make use of the same marketing approach that other professional sales people do when they want to increase sales:1. They hustle to get new business; 2. They invest in the relationships with their clients and prospects; 3. They implement formal and deliberate referral systems. Bartering through Tradebank is a giant step toward increasing sales and profitability for restaurateurs as well as all business owners. Your participation in Tradebank enables you to work smarter and use barter to be more successful.

Let’s look at item two on their recommendations first. Invest in relationships with your clients and prospects. Learn who your customers are, meet them personally, make them feel appreciated and valued. Don’t assume customers know all about your business. Educate your customers regarding all the products and services you offer (not just the ones they use). Continually remind your customers how doing business with you will save them time, money and/or add pleasure to their lives. Do this with brochures, flyers, banners, your telephone message on hold, email and text messaging programs, all of which are available through Tradebank.

Build repeat customers through

loyalty programs and customer appreciation promotions. However, be mindful of this caveat: Don’t get in the trap of using incentives for new customers only. Your good intentions will back fire when a new customer gets a discount and your long time loyal customer is excluded and has to pay full price. Give both your new and existing customers a reason to continue to do business with you. Don’t favor one group at the expense of the other.

Now for items one & three. Tradebank provides the platform for you to acquire new business, both from barter and cash sources. We know customers by-pass your competition to spend Tradebank Dollars with you rather than spend cash with your competitors. This generates new incremental revenue for you above and beyond your existing cash sales. Remember, you don’t barter instead of cash, you barter in addition to cash.

When you “hustle to get new business” keep in mind, new business not only stems from your Tradebank barter sales, it also includes your customer’s circle of influence. After each sale (both barter and cash), ask your customers to introduce your business to potential new customers with their recommendations and referrals. Each

Speaking From Experience

single customer represents potential new customers from their family, friends, colleagues, neighbors, etc. After each sale you make, ask for the referral and introduction and back it up with flyers, brochures, business cards and website information they can pass along.

Tradebank customers are some of your most valuable clientele because of the enormous credibility they give to your company. That word of mouth advertising becomes increasingly more effective when combined with advertising and marketing programs which you fund with the barter revenue earned from your new Tradebank customer sales.

In a time when we are all looking for new business, Tradebank is no different. Tradebank is always looking to be introduced to quality business owners who are looking for new customers. Remember, introductions not only assist Tradebank, but provide you with additional purchasing avenues, as well.

Marcy S. Yaffe is the Vice President of Trade and National Training Director of Tradebank International. She has over 26 years experience brokering barter transactions. Contact [email protected] or 888.568.5680 ext 118.

Nick and Violet Baumgartner are the Tradebank Brokers and Regional Owners of Tradebank of Topeka and Lawrence, Kansas MY: Nick and Violet, I know both of you are strong advocates of clients using the new revenue from Tradebank sales to fund advertising and marketing programs to grow their business. Will you elaborate? NB: One of the strongest recommendations I make to our clients is to establish a solid advertising and marketing program to keep their business in the public eye and continually attract new customers. We are fortunate to have Tradebank clients who offer a wide variety of marketing and advertising options and happily accept Tradebank as payment. Many clients here in Topeka have joined Tradebank because their cash advertising and marketing budget was not enough to do what they needed to do in order to distinguish themselves from their competition. Vice versa, many of our media clients joined Tradebank because they heard one too many times from existing Tradebank clients, “I do all my advertising through Tradebank, if you are part of Tradebank

A Tradebank Broker Replies

we can continue to talk.” Clients here in Topeka know that because of Tradebank, they have an advertising and marketing opportunity that their competitors just don’t have. Often times, when a business looks to cut expenses, advertising and marketing are one of the first to be cut. Tradebank clients don’t have to resort to reducing their advertising because they have a resource available to them in what I call “found money”. Found money refers to the additional source of revenue from their Tradebank sales; revenue that they would not have had if not for Tradebank. VB: Nick and I feel strongly that we have a responsibility to keep our client’s businesses as healthy as possible and that includes Tradebank as an important component, but it extends even further than that. We’re here to assist our clients in attracting both cash and barter customers and keeping both. In no way are we advocating our Tradebank clients seek cash from one another. What we are saying is to use the valuable resources that Tradebank customers provide to enhance your business and advertising and marketing paid for with as Nick says, “found money” is one of the best ways to do so.

Entrepreneur Andrew Muchmore is the newest Tradebank Regional Franchise Owner. Muchmore is the owner of Tradebank of Oklahoma City. “A Tradebank presence in Oklahoma City represents growth and expansion for Tradebank and ties in closely with the other successful Tradebank franchises in Kansas (Topeka, Wichita, and Lawrence) and Arkansas (Bentonville) all of which translates to even more trading opportunities for our clients,” announced Todd Gerry, president, Tradebank International Franchising Corp. “I know from my own experiences the advantages barter offers. I see the opportunities of barter being expanded exponentially with Tradebank over the limitations of trying to barter one-to-one. I had tried one-on-one barter, but it was cumbersome. At times I would trade for products or services I wasn’t really in the market for. Trading through Tradebank allows both parties to receive exactly what they want with every trade. Furthermore, there is always a need for barter representation in every city. Tradebank helps create an additional stream of income for businesses. In today’s economy everyone is looking for new ways to attract customers and save cash,” Muchmore explains. Previously a real estate property manager and 11 year owner/operator of a bowling center, Muchmore realizes now how bartering with Tradebank would have benefited him in those endeavors, ”If I would have known then what I know now, I would have been a very involved Tradebank client.” Muchmore first heard about Tradebank last year while on an exploratory business trip in Chattanooga. On his way to a meeting with a colleague, he noticed the Chattanooga Tradebank sign. Muchmore inquired to his colleague (who happens to be a satisfied Tradebank client) about Tradebank. After hearing how easy and beneficial the trades are, Muchmore became very interested in learning about the fundamentals of the company. It didn’t take long for him to realize that Tradebank bartering was a much needed and profitable service for all businesses in his area and around the world. After this realization, Muchmore changed directions and gladly took on a new and exciting business endeavor with Tradebank.

Muchmore with his wife and four children live in Edmond, Oklahoma, which borders Oklahoma City.

Muchmore holds a B.A. in Journalism from Oklahoma State University. “I am excited about introducing Tradebank to business owners and professionals across the Oklahoma City region. As we build a stable client base, we will be looking to add quality, reputable companies to the Tradebank family. This will create many new opportunities, not only for our local clients, but for the entire Tradebank community,” Muchmore announces.

PART 1The more options you have the better position you are in to succeed. Tradebank Dollars represent options. The tremendous diversity of products and services offered by Tradebank clients provides you with a vast collection of diverse possibilities. You are then able to take your current resources to the next level and have greater prosperity in your business and home life. As a Tradebank client, you have the ability to capitalize on your connection with your Tradebank trading partners to maximize your successes.

The first step is taking a look at your trade balance. Do you have the necessary Tradebank Dollars to acquire the products and services you need and want? Some clients cannot “think big” because they simply have not sold enough of their products and services to generate the trade revenue to provide them with the necessary financial resources to maximize their barter leverage.

If this is you, then work closely with your personal Tradebank Broker and directly with your Tradebank trading partners to increase your barter sales. Ask yourself, How do I promote my business through Tradebank? Have I completely described to potential customers the products

and services I offer? Do my potential customers know the benefits of what I offer? Do I ask for their business and give them a reason to do business with me? How’s my reputation in the marketplace? Do my staff and I welcome Tradebank sales and make our Tradebank customers feel valued and want to continue to do business with us?

If you are able to answer yes to all the questions above and have a consistent and loyal client/customer base through Tradebank, congratulations! Your focus can be on using your additional revenue to your fullest advantage to increase your profitability. The psychology of barter is such that if you only have T$3,000 in your account, you may not be thinking in terms of making T$10,000 purchases and therefore not using the advantages of barter to your fullest extent. This may cause you to spend more cash than may be necessary on a daily basis and even miss out on opportunities such as a great vacation, new venture and/or develop a strong sales and marketing program, using your Tradebank dollars.

Next month we will discuss the specific methodology you can use to create and capitalize on profitable opportunities and posture yourself to maximize your Tradebank advantage.

Give Us A TryWe live in a society of predetermined ideas and stereotypes which may prevent us from discovering new opportunities. Tradebank helps you expand your awareness and increase your familiarity with new ideas and opportunities. The pawn industry, primarily pawn shops, is a perfect example.

Pawn shops have been in existence for over 3000 years, dating back to ancient China. Today the pawn industry is experiencing resurgence in popularity and many shops are transitioning from a place of last resort to a reputable retail establishment. The change is due in part to a shift in public perception. “There are a large number of people who would never have ventured into a pawn shop. The History Channel’s hit TV show Pawn Stars has set out to change our reputation and has done a great job. The Harrisons and their television show improve the image of the industry like no one has been able to do,” says Stephen Owens, owner of Patriot Pawn and a Tradebank client in Wichita since 2007.

“Pawn shops do well in both good and bad economic times. In an up economy, there are still plenty of people who need short term, collateralized, non recourse loans. In a down economy, the need for short term lending increases tremendously. The loan side represents the cash side of our business. The resale side of our business is where we mesh so well with Tradebank. In good times and bad, middle and upper income Americans have more spendable income and shop the resale side. People look for the deals and they are always found at pawn shops,” explains Owens.

The pawn shops that are part of Tradebank sell everything from DVDs to 52” plasma televisions. For Tradebank clients, shopping at a pawn shop represents purchasing opportunities for popular items such as jewelry, musical instruments and electronics. “Things not readily available through barter are usually available at a pawn shop and most people aren’t concerned where they buy the merchandise, what’s important is they are able to buy it. We’ve sold everything from power tools to cameras to the popular Wii gaming systems through Tradebank. When we found out about Tradebank, it was a no brainer that Tradebank was meant for us, and as a result, we have many new customers. We deal only in hard goods. We have what most people are looking for and we’re happy to sell the items through Tradebank,” says Owens.

According to Owens, “Tradebank not only provides new customers and word of mouth advertising for Patriot Pawn, we now have an additional source of revenue. I have always loved bartering. We have all of our Patriot Pawn T-shirts done through Tradebank. I have had my roof re-done and had a new heating and air conditioning unit installed, and my partner has taken vacations using Tradebank as well. Tradebank is simply the way to go. “The most important thing is to give us a try. Put your preconceived notions to rest and stop in your local pawn shop if there is one part of Tradebank in your area. If not, give us a call and see what were about. There are still plenty of stores out there that may look and feel like a broken down flea market and appear to be stuck in the 70’s, but there are many new, fresh stores such as ours with custom tile floors, original tin ceilings and an ambiance that can’t be beat by Dillard’s, offers Owens.

We often refer to the “savvy Tradebank client”. Joe Campbell, owner of Joe’s Pawn Shop, Inc. in Albertville, Alabama, has been a Tradebank client since 1999 and is a perfect example of ways to be a savvy Tradebank client. Over the years, he has sold jewelry, electronics, audio, tools, musical instruments and many other unique one-of-a-kind items to Tradebank clients. While Campbell’s experiences are based on his pawn shop business, his message regarding the components of being a savvy trader is applicable to all Tradebank clients.

Campbell is quick to say how much he values the new customers and additional purchasing power being a part of Tradebank provides. Campbell elaborates on his enthusiasm for the benefits of being a Tradebank client, “Tradebank opens new markets for me locally and nationally for both cash and barter. Tradebank builds loyalty with my suppliers. Tradebank preserves my integrity in my local market. Tradebank increases my market share. Tradebank provides me a competitive edge over other businesses in my industry. Tradebank provides me additional purchasing power and an additional method to move inventory.”

Campbell backs up those statements with examples of the ways he leverages his barter relationships through Tradebank to strengthen his cash relationships and improve his bottom line. “First and foremost, it is easier to raise Tradebank Dollars than cash dollars. So when I need to make a purchase, I look to spend my Tradebank Dollars first. Second, through Tradebank, I increase my customer base from a local to a national market. For example, I just took in a beautiful mink coat that someone pawned. I added it to the Tradebank Classifieds. My potential buyers increase substantially when I advertise outside of Albertville. By the time this article is printed, I know I will have sold the coat to a Tradebank client.

“Recently I was offered the opportunity to purchase a group of purses at a great wholesale price from one of my regular suppliers. You have to understand these guys, when you say ‘no thanks’ too often, they’ll stop offering. The trouble was, I’ve never sold a purse through my pawn shop, ever. But, because of my barter distribution channels through Tradebank, I was able to buy the purses, taking advantage of the discount offered to me, and sell them at competitive prices through Tradebank. Equally important, my supplier was able to move the purses he had for sale and that keeps him loyal to me and he will continue to bring me good buys rather than offer them to my competitors..

“I had a similar opportunity occur with binoculars. One of my regular suppliers of ammunition and guns had a couple dozen high end binoculars he wanted to move. I knew the marketability of $1,500 binoculars through my local customers was nonexistent, even though $1,500 was a fair price. Furthermore, if I had them for sale here in the shop, everyone who saw them would expect me to pay $1,000 for their $25 binoculars. So I worked through my Tradebank Broker, marketed them on a national basis and a couple dozen Tradebank clients with an appreciation for Leupold binoculars were very happy to purchase something that isn’t usually traded. And, I preserved my relationship with my supplier without interfering with my cash customers while generating additional revenue to use for my purchases.

“Although the pawn industry is unique, the business principles that apply to my business can be applied to every business. Everyone has to make sales; whether they sell services, information or merchandise. Everyone has to sell to stay in business and Tradebank provides you with the opportunities take your business to the next level,” summarizes Campbell.

Live Entertainment Builds ProfitsTraffic and customer satisfaction drive restaurant and hotel sales. Your participation in Tradebank provides you with introductions to talented artists representing every genre of entertainment from singers to karaoke to magicians who will assist you in drawing customers to your establishment.

Both the singing voice of crooner Paul Tanner as he entertains the customers in the Ramada’s Breeze’s Night Lounge and the “cha-ching” of the cash registers as he does, provide sweet music to the ears of Michael Gerringer, Director of Sales and Marketing at the Ramada Orlando Celebrations Resorts.

“Our guests love the entertainment we offer. We are able to keep our customers here on our property by providing quality performers in our lounge and restaurants. Our guests don’t need to go anywhere else to eat, drink and be entertained. That means more revenue for us,” explains Gerringer.

Tanner, who is a singer impressionist, has been performing in the Breeze’s Lounge since October, 2009 and is paid by the Ramada through Tradebank. Tanner isn’t the only entertainer that the Ramada uses through Tradebank. Singer Carlene Mitchell of HeartFelt Entertainment performs in the Breeze’s Lounge on Wednesday nights. Dancer and DJ Nicole Mitchell provides 70’s, 80’s and 90’s dance lessons and a dance party on Friday nights. Al Fuentes of Highvoltage Entertainment provides weekly DJ services for the guests of the Ramada through Tradebank. Another Tradebank client, Greg Thompson of the Vagabond Troupe performs stand up comedy and has helped the hotel create an entertainment website and promotional materials.

“It was a natural for us to introduce our clients. We know our restaurants and resorts offer entertainment and why should they pay cash when they can hire the finest in entertainment through Tradebank? Clients like Metro West Golf Club love having live entertainment from Carlene Mitchell to enhance their Sunday brunches,” explains Jacquie Oliver, Tradebank Broker in Florida.

Tradebank also provides a tremendous benefit for the entertainers as well by providing them additional exposure in the marketplace and incremental revenue. Carlene Mitchell is a 25 year music veteran and award winning celebrity tribute artist and she is quick to point out the positive events she has experienced as a result of her participation in Tradebank. “The additional revenue I

have received through Tradebank has enabled me to complete long over due maintenance and repairs as well pay for video production and other purchases so I don’t have to spend my cash. Working with the Ramada and other Tradebank clients like Metro West Golf Club has also opened many new doors for me, and that’s always a good thing. I have been introduced to many people here and it has developed into new contacts and performances for me that are not a part of Tradebank and I know first hand what is meant by ‘Tradebank also introduces clients to new cash opportunities.”
