Growing in Grace The Tower MAY 2014

DEAR PARTNERS,

In June of 2015, St. Luke’s will celebrate our 75th Anniversary. Even though that celebration is a year away, this is the time of year we pause to remember that there have been many saints whose faithful witness and dedicated service to our Lord created a foundation upon which we now stand. We are currently gath-ering a group of interested members to help plan special events that will make this anniversary joyful and fruitful. Please sign-up at the sign-up center in the back narthex or call the Church Office if you would be willing to help in that celebration planning.

But we don’t have to wait for all that to take shape to remember and give thanks for those who have faithfully served our Lord through the church – here at St. Luke’s or in other congregations. We will be honoring the elders among us on June 22, 2014 – St. Luke’s Elder Sunday. We will recognize and honor them at worship and at a special luncheon following the 11:15 service. We have defined the “elders” of our congregation as all those 75 years old or over. Your experience and wisdom are valued by your family of faith, and your previous service has provided many blessings for the St. Luke’s family of 2014 and be-yond. Please allow us to honor you on June 22. You should receive an invitation in the mail within the next few weeks. The light luncheon to be provided at about 12:30 pm that day is for the whole congregation. A strong turn-out of congregational members will help show our appreciation for the elders among us.

We will soon be launching another project that will give us a chance to bless many generations of St. Luke’s members who will follow us. If you have been to worship in the past year, you may have noted there are times our organ develops a “cypher.” This happens when air continues to pass through the pipes even though the stop has been closed. Over the years, organ technicians have examined it and noted its age and the limitations that exist to truly repair it. We are about at the end of the “band aid” solutions. You will be hearing more about this need as it is the next major project listed on our Facility Improvement Fund priority list. Even as we give thanks for the saints who rebuilt and provided our current organ for our use for the past 40 years, now we can consider what a great blessing we can pass on to generations of St. Luke’s folks yet to come.

As we look to the future of St. Luke’s, another endeavor is underway to call an associate pastor to join us in ministry. Our Call Committee has been diligently working at creating our congregational profile (a first requirement to get the ball rolling). Please note the announcement of the congregational forum on Sun-day, May 4 at 12:30 in the Leppien Room where the congregation will be able to review and give feedback to the Call Committee about our profile before it is submitted to the Synod office. Once the Synod Office has received and approved our profile, we will be receiving names of potential candidates to consider for interview. Your input is vital to making this a fruitful call process. Please keep our Call Committee in your prayers.

THE ENDOWMENT FUND TRUSTEES are now accepting student scholarship applications which are due by May15. If you have any questions about this you can contact any trustee: Bob Cook, Nikki Fraley, Ruth Thompson, Lynn Warren, Adam Crammond or Pastor Frank.

OUR COMMUNITY GARDEN: Sue Neiman has volunteered to coordinate our community garden this sum-mer. If you would be willing to plant and tend a section, please talk to Sue or call the Church Office.

ST. LUKE’S WILL CELEBRATE 75 YEARS IN 2015. Our 75th anniversary is on the horizon and we would like to gather a planning group to help us think about fitting ways to celebrate and give thanks to God for 75 years of grace and for remembering all the saints who have laid the foundations our congregations stands on to-day. We would like to plan events for throughout 2015 – so lots of ideas and volunteers are needed. Sign-up at the sign-up center in the back or talk to Erin Beard who has volunteered to get the ball rolling.

MUSIC SUNDAY is scheduled for Sunday, June 8th. We will only have two services that day, at 8:30 and 10:00 am. Both will feature the music ministry of our Gig band, Stumbling Up, our Chancel Choir and our Chancel Ringers. Following these two services, we will have our congregational meeting. Please keep an eye out for further details.

ZIMMANN’S SCHEDULED TO VISIT … Pastors Marty & Angela Zimman and family are scheduled to be with us to preach and share their time in Jerusalem and the Holy Land on Sunday, July 6th. Further details will be forth-coming. Please plan to join us.

OUR NEXT ADOPT-A-ROAD pick-up is scheduled for Saturday, July 19th. Thanks to the crew who helped beautify Sterns Rd. between Lewis and Douglas on April 19th. We were finished in about 1 ½ hours. With 10-12 people, we can do it again!! Watch for a sign-up in June.

CONGREGATIONAL MEETING – Our next Congregation Meeting is scheduled for Sunday, June 8th following the 8:30 and 10:00 “Music Sunday” worship services. (Please note – there will be no 11:15 service that day. All Ministry Teams are asked to submit a report covering what you have been doing this past year and what you are planning for next year. We will also have election of Church Council members and consider any other business that comes up. Please plan to join us!!

Friday May 16th will be the St. Luke’s Youth GAME SHOW DINNER. This

was big fun last year and we have great plans for this event! COME JOIN IN

PARISH HEALTH MINISTRY

AMPUTATIONS

An amputation is the removal of an injured or diseased body part. It is always done as a

last resort, after trying the many ways to save a body part. The most common cause is car-

dio-vascular disease where the blood vessels cannot carry the blood supply to the limbs.

Other reasons for an amputation are trauma, frostbite, burns, gangrene, infections, diabetic

ulcers or a congenital deformity. Wars have resulted in thousands of amputations from acci-

dents, land mines, and bombs on our veterans.

Doctors advise counseling before surgery if possible because of this traumatic experience,

and limitations. Sometimes one is measured for a prosthesis before surgery. After an ampu-

tation, phantom pain occurs and feeling the body parts that are not there with pain, itching,

aching, or tingling sensations. One may be hospitalized about 4 to14 days with healing 4 to

8 weeks.

After complete healing of the wound a prosthesis will be fitted, with many options to

choose from, including electrical and mechanical devices. Much physical therapy and exer-

cise is advised. Many people have adjusted well returning to a normal lifestyle including

Olympic athletes.

There have been recent successes in injury reattachments. It is suggested as first aid to

rinse the severed body part in clean water. Wrap it in a damp clean cloth, place it a plastic

bag, and then in ice water to take to the hospital.

If you are a diabetic please inspect your feet daily, wear shoes that fit properly, do not go

barefoot, and call the Dr. at the first sign of a foot ulcer. Also, of course keep your blood

sugar under control to prevent a future amputation.

HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH NEWS

ST. LUKE'S YOUTH

St. Luke’s Senior High Youth Group would like to thank everyone for desig-

nating the Senior High LYO on their Kroger rewards , we still have Script orders

being taken. Between 11/1/2013 &1/31/2014 we raised $245. 64 among 12

households. If you are not registered with Kroger to designate your card, the

youth will be available to help you.

A Big Thank You to all that supported the Youth at the Easter Breakfast on Easter Sunday!

St. Luke’s Youth Mission Trip this year will be to Chicago, July 13-18th. We will again be

joining the Youthworks program as we did for previous trips. We will be hosting several

fundraising efforts to help finance the trip. Friday may 16th will be our GAME

SHOW . Please plan to attend!

Our regular gatherings are back to Wednesday evenings as of April 30th. Look for info on

our YOUTH BULLETIN BOARD next to the mailboxes in hallway by the side narthex, and

also posted on the Youth room door. We welcome ALL high school students. We also

welcome adults who would like to be a supporter to our younger members.

ELDER SUNDAY

JUNE 22, 2014

Greetings,

Don't we all enjoy a gathering where we know the people and places they are talking about

and to hear stories of the past? We learn history in an enjoyable way, maybe we share a laugh,

feel compassion, or even wonder "how did that ever happen" as we hear the stories behind the

scenes.

You are invited to come to hear some of our "Elders" at St. Luke’s share stories and a meal to

honor them! We can learn from these Elders what they remember of our St. Luke’s history,

maybe some incidents not well known behind the changes that have happened over time. We

have planned for an "Elder Sunday", June 22nd with a 12:30pm light lunch and story time to

follow. They may tell us of services/ activities they participate in now or in the past such as

Sunday School teacher, church council member, counter, altar guild, committee participant,

banner hanging, lector, usher, and so the list goes on.

These folks have shown us the way to be Christ- like servants for our congregation. They have

lit the way for us to follow in their path.

We are asking the congregation members to celebrate, laugh, and learn how things happened at

St. Luke’s Church to make us a" Family" with much to share.

Please RSVP to the church office by June 13th if you would like to come. We'll get arrange-

ments made preparing for you!

This is the first event that is being held to celebrate our 75th anniversary as St. Luke’s Church

which is June 2015!
