  • Wavelength

Antennas are often referred to by their relative wavelength. For example, a 1/2 wave is

half the size of the respective wave the antenna is used for. A 1/4 wave is a quarter the size

    of the wavelength.

    Impedance

Impedance of the radio, antenna and coax should match (generally this is 50 Ohms).

    VSWR

Voltage Standing Wave Ratio demonstrates the quality of the impedance match for the an-

tenna. Simply, it measures how much of the signal bounces back from the antenna (thus

    wasting power).

    Gain

Gain represents how well an antenna converts input power into radio waves in a particular

direction. This is a logarithmic measure. Thus, 6 dB is double the power of 3 dB.

    Antenna Patterns

    Omnidirectional

The antenna sends and receives signal from all directions. These antennas use different

gains for varying terrain. For example, 0dB radiates up, thus making it useful for higher

sites. 3dB is good for city settings. 5dB radiates out to the sides, thus making it better for

    open area.

    Directional

The antenna focuses energy in a single direction.

    Field Tunable

An antenna that is field tunable generally involves either: 2 elements that can slide or tel-

escope to a particular length, or the metal whip can be cut to a specified frequency length.

Whips that are intended to be cut will have a ‘cutting chart’ that outlines the lengths re-

    quired for particular frequencies.

    Antenna Basics

    15

  • Dipole

This antenna (generally a 1/2 wave) is split at the center

for a feed line to give or take power.

    Yagi

Yagi's are directional antennas with multiple elements

protruding from a central boom. The side elements are

not connected to the transmitter or receiver. This style

obtains a significant increase in directionality and gain.

    Loading Coal

Loading is the placing of a loading coil at the base of

an antenna. This allows the antenna to be shorter

than usually required for a given frequency.

    Collinear Antenna

A collinear antenna array is a series of dipole antennas along a common

line (see right). Generally these are high gain omnidirectional antennas.

This style of antenna is used for base stations or public services.

    Low Profile Antenna

This antenna design decreases the height of an antenna.

This is achieved either by placing the antenna lengthwise,

    or by coiling the antenna.

    NMO

NMO stands for New Motorola. This is used for installing an antenna on a

fixed structure like a vehicle. These mounts are generally ‘truck lid’, ‘magnet’

or ‘through-hole’ which is the most rugged.

    16

  • FME Connectors

A miniature 50 Ohm connector for DC to 2000MHZ, used

with RG58 or other coaxial cables.

    N Connectors

A threaded, weatherproof, medium sized RF connector used to

join coaxial cables. This was one of the early connectors carry-

ing microwave signals. N stands for Paul Neill, the inventor.

    BNC Connectors

A miniature quick connect and disconnect RF connector used for co-

axial cable. It has two bayonet lugs on the female connector. These

bayonet lugs can wear down over time. These connectors are gener-

ally used for antennas, base stations, radios, satellite communications

    and medical equipment.

    TNC Connectors

A threaded version of the BNC connector. TNC connectors

best operate in the 0-11 GHz frequency. TNC also includes a

variation that reverses the polarity of the interface.

    SMA Connectors

Subminiature Version A interface connector for coax and screw-

type coupling mechanisms. This connector was created for use be-

tween DC to 18GHz, but is generally used for antennas (WIFI).

    Connector Basics

    17

  • UHF Connectors

A connector developed for use in systems from 0.6 to 300 MHz.

These connectors are popular because they are easy to use. The

termination is screw on and requires no special tools.

    Mini UHF Connectors

A miniature UHF connector. These connectors are de-

signed for scenarios where size is critical. These are most

useful for applications up to 2.5 GHz. Mini UHF use RG-58,

    RG-58A/B/C cable.

    18

    Male vs. Female

Male connectors (left) generally have a center pin or

similar item. Female connectors (right) are designed

to fit the pin of the male connector. For those con-

nectors that thread, the male will have the threads

on the inside edge, the female will have the thread

    on the outside.

  • Coaxial Cable Basics Generic Cable

Generic coax consists of 4 layers– a plastic

jacket, a metal shield, insulator and a center

    core.

    Shielding

The more shielding a cable has, the less inter-

ference that occurs. Shielding makes the ca-

ble stiffer and more difficult to work with.

    Unshielded Twisted Pair

This consists of twisted pairs (generally 4) in

    PVC or plenum jacket.

    Foiled Twisted Pair

This consists of twisted pairs with foil shield sur-

    rounding all pairs.

    Shielded Twisted Pair

This consists of twisted pairs which are shield-

ed individually, reducing noise and interference.

    Screened Foiled Twisted Pair

This consists of twisted pairs which are shield-

    ed with braiding and foil.

    Screened Shielded Twisted Pair

This consists of twisted pairs which are shield-

ed individually by foil, and collectively by braid-

    ing.

    19

  • Cable Groups

    Cable Groups

Cable groups are similar cables with slightly different properties. These cables can use the

same connectors. Connectors within the same cable group can be terminated with any ca-

    ble type within the family.

    Example: Cable Group C contains RG-58, RG-58A, and RG-58C.

Common Cable Types RG-58 RG-58 is one of the most common coaxial cables used for RF applications. This cable has a

impedance of 50-52 ohms. General characteristics include: 5mm diameter, 37g per meter,

max potential of 300V. This cable has higher losses, but is small enough to use in a vehicle

application. This cable is generally used when less than 100ft will be employed in the task.

LMR 400 LMR400 is used for a variety of radio applications, ranging from Ham to commercial includ-

ing GPS, LMR, WLAN, WISP, SCADA, mobile antennas. End connectors are generally TNC,

SMA, N, BNC and 7-16 DIN. The low loss characteristics of this cable make it best suited for

base station or long distance cable runs. The cable is larger than RG58 and rigid. Thus, it is

not for use in a vehicle application.

Note: the part number of LMR represents the diameter of the cable. LMR 400 is .405 of an

    inch.

Solid vs. Stranded Solid vs. Stranded Solid (U) wire has a single center piece of metal. Stranded (AU), conversely, has many

small pieces of wire making up the center core. Stranded is more flexible and can take

more abuse. Solid is easier to work with to attach connectors, and has less loss.
