BE THERE! BE THERE!
I want to thank Connie Shierra, Jerry Whitehurst, and Dwight Bullock for their
work on setting up the members show at
the d’Art Center in downtown Norfolk. Thanks to Ray Kallman for securing this
location. This is probably the highest
profile show in the history of Tidewater Turners and will give us more exposure
than we have ever had for a show. You will want to go down and view the 100+
entries that are on display at the center.
I also want to thank the chairs of two new committees who have stepped up and
agreed to serve our club. Art Green will
chair the Public Relations and Promotions Committee, focusing on getting the name
and mission of the club out to our com-munity. The Membership Committee
will be co-chaired by Gwen & Walter
Harris, focusing on welcoming and nur-turing of our membership.
Serving on the Public Relations and Pro-motions Committee will be Greg Fogle
and Amos Peterson. Serving on the
Membership Committee will be Bryan Gold and Tim Pearce. Thanks guys.
Larry Anderson has also agreed to take
on the responsibility as the Equipment manager for the club. Over the past 25
years we have accumulated a large num-ber of tools and turning equipment. Larry
will oversee this equipment and keep it in
shape. Thanks Larry. Your officers and board are looking for
someone to organize the shop talk pro-
gram. If you have an inkling of an inter-est, see Ray Kallman or me and we will
fill you in on what this entails.
Thanks Guys!
This spalted sycamore suspended carafe and base set, turned by Terry Richards (your editor), was voted by the officers and board as the Show
‘N Tell Turning of the Month for August, 2013. The image serves as
our monthly cover photo and as the watermark on subsequent pages. It is made from wood salvaged after the city trimming operation at
the historic Francis Land House in Virginia Beach. Read more about
it on page 8.

Board Briefs
On September 5th, the Turners Board of Directors and Of-
ficers held their monthly meeting at Woodcraft. To keep the membership informed about our efforts, here is a sum-
mary of the meeting.
Ray thanked Dave Zurek for his work setting up the club
show in the Virginia Beach Library in August.
He also reported he had found a statement on the Charles
Taylor Arts Center web site saying that Tidewater Turners would participate in their exhibition in May 2014. He
asked if anyone knew who set up this event for the club.
Since no one was aware of it, Ray will contact the Arts Center for more information.
He reviewed the upcoming public demonstrations: D’Art
Center, Norfolk Makers Faire, Virginia Beach Artisans in
the Park, and the Newport News Fall Festival.
Ray introduced the email he received from the Catoctin
Area Turners enquiring about purchasing the Oneway lathe. Since no decision has been made on the lathe, we
will hold the email.
Ray opened discussion about participation in the monthly
shoptalk. All agreed that we need a coordinator to ensure that we have a viable program.
August Meeting Minutes
The meeting was called to order by Sam Warren, Presi-
dent. Sam welcomed all visitors and our new member Craig Petersen. Myron Curtis explained how his Private
Lesson class will go. Ray Kallman talked about the up-
coming demos for the club. Connie Shiera talked about the Member Show at the d-Art Center in Norfolk. The
reception will be Saturday, Sept. 7th from 6-8:00pm.
Show and Tell: Amos Peterson, Chuck Horton, Gwen
Harris, Wolfgang Vogelbein, Terry Richards, Nancy Hill, Chris Garner, John DeLong, Cliff Guard, Jerry
Whitehurst, Dick Hines, San Warren and Dave Zurek.
Tonight’s demo is by Lisa and Chuck Mosser. This was
a very different and most informative demonstration. First Lisa showed how she makes glass beads and how
they will adorn some of Chuck’s turnings. Then Chuck
showed how he turns a suspended lidded box that will have one of Lisa’s beautiful beads on the top. Thanks
for a very informative demo.
Door Prize winners were Ivan Clark and Larry Shiera.
The meeting was closed until Sept. 24th at 6:30PM.
Respectfully submitted,
Connie Shiera, Secretary

August Club Meeting Demonstration
Lisa and Chuck Mosser
Lisa and Chuck Mosser provided
us a tag-team
demonstration at the August meet-
ing. Lisa opened
the first round with a segment
showing how she crafts finials for
some of the
turned wood items that Chuck makes. She also makes specialty glass beads
for necklaces, brooches, etc. All these show wonderfully
eye-drawing swirls and twists.
She fired up the torch and created some of her impossible glass swirls right before our eyes. - earrings, candy canes,
and of course, finials. She showed the secret of putting a
steel shaft in the middle of the bead or finial to attach it to the finished wood turning.
Their collaborative work has shown up at many Club
events, including Show ‘N Tell, Silver Anniversary, Vari-ous Demonstrations, and the Members’ Art Exhibits.
After the break, Chuck took to the ring to show how he makes his unique hollow form with no apparently visible
means of support. By turning two items from the same
piece of wood at the same time, he creates a form that is truly amazing, topped, or course, by a glass finial from
Lisa’s collection.
Tuesday night TV was soundly defeated; thrown com-
pletely from the ring, as the
Mosser team
put them all to shame. If you
weren’t there, you shouldda
been!

Turners Go To School
Ray’s Report Continued from Page 3
Connie reported that plans for the Members Show are on track. Ray said Mark and Jamie Lewis (who judged last
year's show) would include Robin Rodgers (Assistant Di-
rector of the Chrysler Museum glass studio) as a third judge.
Sam reported that the Web Page Committee was continu-ing work and they were looking to integrate the club Fa-
cebook page with the web page. He also reported on the status of new committees. Gwen and Walter Harris will
co-chair the membership committee and Art Green will
chair the publicity committee. He also provided a charter for the committees. Further, he reported that Larry Ander-
son has agreed to become the club’s Equipment Manager
Dave is continuing research into the audio visual equip-
ment used at the AAW symposium. The AAW board provided him with a list of equipment used during the
AAW symposium and he will work up a proposed list of
equipment for purchase for review by the board. Dave then provided updates on the status of upcoming classes,
and as Club Treasurer, reported on the state of the treas-
ury.
Peter reported on his work finding candidates to fill open-ing officer and board positions. He will be contacting
potential candidates. Elections for club officers will be at
the October meeting; for board seats in November.
Terry suggested welcoming new members in the newslet-
ter. Each new membership form can be provided to the editor by the membership committee.
Dwight reported that he had received an email from Chris Boerner, asking about hosting Liam O'Neill as a demon-
strator for a meeting. The board agreed that the club did-
n't have sufficient funds at this time to host a national turner. However, we would consider it in the future. Re-
garding demonstrators, he presented a slate of turners to demonstrate during meetings including September (Cliff
Guard - embellishment techniques), October (the Sorby
tool representative), and November - the Turnathon. He is asking for volunteers and ideas for demonstrations for
2014.
Dwight confirmed he has forwarded a message via
email, thanking Chuck and Lisa Mosser for their presenta-tion during the August meeting.
Dwight also revealed he may have a yarn shop that would like our spinning wheel and may purchase it or hold it on
consignment.
Any members who have topics they would like discussed
at a board meeting can forward the topic in writing to any officer or board member.

The next club meeting, September 24,
will showcase Cliff Guard as the fea-tured demonstrator. Regular meeting
attendees have come to expect Cliff to
bring in a piece or two to most monthly Show ‘N Tell sessions. These pieces are
always different; some are burned; some are pickled; some are carved; some are
cutaway; some are painted. A simple
vase or box comes away with trees, flowers, mountains, or who knows what? It is always a
surprise and a real treat to see what he will be making next.
We will get to see some of these techniques as they happen
when he brings his tools and turned pieces to the front of
the class. He has not said what kind of
embellishment he intends to show, but that only increases the element of sur-
prise.
If you are not there, you will only get to
read about it next month. If you are there, you can see it in person, and read
about it next month - a real two-fer!
Cliff has compared his multiple embellishment techniques
to spices a chef might use to turn something simple into a more complex dish - an egg into a soufflé’. Let’s let Cliff
describe what he is cooking up in his own words…...
Cliff Writes:
“If the Tidewater Turners were a cooking club, this demo would be an introduction/instruction on the use of spices
and seasonings. The analogies between embellishing turn-
ings and cooking go on and on. Embellishments can make turnings more appealing, just like seasonings and spices
can make food more appealing. Some turnings (and foods)
need nothing to make them better. Too much embellish-ment can sometimes ruin a beautiful turning, just like too
much seasoning can ruin a delicious dish. Embellishments (and spices) can be used separately or together in various
combinations. Sometimes all the seasoning in the world
cannot save distasteful food, and sometimes the only solu-tion for a bad turning is a good fire. My father used to say,
“You can’t make chicken salad out of chicken ma-
nure.” (Not his exact words) Anyway, you get the idea.
Although this demo will not be about how to turn, we will start on the lathe with a simple form. From there we will
progress in different directions to show possible options or
embellishment techniques that can be applied to the form. I will discuss and demonstrate ebonizing, surface texturing
with both a rotary tool and pyrography, covering up flaws,
highlighting key features, and anything else that comes up. There will be a little jumping back and forth as we discuss
using different combinations of embellishments together. With a little luck there will be plenty of feedback from the
audience, and a few more ideas will pop up. As in so
many different areas, we are limited only by our imagina-tions. I’m looking forward to sharing what I know and
learning what you know.”

August Show ‘N Tell Turning of the Month
Close-up of
The Support Base
The Carafe
Without the Base
At the August Show ‘N Tell
This suspended carafe was chosen from the exhibits at the Show ‘N Tell as the Turning of the Month for August.. It
is turned from sycamore that came from the huge speci-
men tree in the front yard of the Francis Land House in Virginia Beach.
Several Tidewater Turners participated in our annual pub-lic demonstration at the Land House, where we learned
that the tree was to be trimmed to make it more healthy and safe. We returned the following week to pick up some
turning wood from this historic tree.
This log section was between 3 and 4 feet long. It lay in
the weeds over the summer and picked up some wonder-
ful grain character, especially near the pith at the center. These pieces are turned dead center on the pith to take ad-
vantage of the beautifully figured wood.
The piece mounted on the stand is 24” tall; the carafe is 6”
in diameter at the globe. The support stand is 9.5” tall, and 7.5” on the outside diameter. The carafe is fully hollowed
to a fairly consistent 1/8” thickness. The base is a simple
rotund hollow form with the bottom and 2/3 of the side-walls cut away.
The technique employed to hollow the carafe required sev-eral dismounts from the lathe to switch the piece from end
to end. The trumpet is hollowed from the top down to
slightly below the halfway point. The globe is hollowed from the center of the ball upward through the trumpet to
meet the top hollowed area. The globe from the center to the base downward is simply a round-bottomed bowl,
leaving a blemish-free bottom. The whole process is simi-
lar to a very large Christmas tree ornament. An accurate steady rest is indispensable for this type of piece.
The finish on both pieces is layered with 8 or 9 coats of spray satin lacquer, buffed with 4/0 steel wool between
coats.
My favorite turning form is the tall vase, and this repre-
sents the most complicated one I have done so far. It’s nearly Fall, and my turning season is fast approaching. I
hope to make the next piece even bigger and better.

2013 Members Artists’ Show D’Art Center - Norfolk, VA
There was a great turnout for the 2013 Artists’ Show at the Selden Arcade in Norfolk. If you didn’t make it to the Re-
ception, be sure to get down there this weekend to see the
tremendous work on display. It’s easy to get there - the north door is only about a hundred yards from the MacAr-
thur station on the TIDE, and the Main Street Parking Gar-
age south door is practically next door. We will be doing a demo this Saturday, starting at noon,. Come on out - visit
the Mall, see the demo, and view the fabulous pieces on dis-
play.

Public Demonstrations
Artisans in the Park - Virginia Beach
Several Tidewater Turners ‘turned’ out to celebrate our first appearance at the Artisans In The Park celebration at
Great Neck Rec Center Park on September 7th and 8th.
Once again, we dodged the curse of the rain gods and enjoyed two days of beautiful weather. Our setup was
near the center of activity, and next to the bathrooms, so
we enjoyed a lot of walk-by traffic. Our two tents were on opposing sides of the main sidewalk, so everyone who
went anywhere near the south side of the fair walked be-tween the turners and the displays of turned items.
Event sponsors, Dunkin’ Donuts and Chik Fil A provided exhibitors with all the belly bombs you could eat (and we
ate plenty)!
Any turner who did not take advantage of this great op-portunity to show our stuff, surely missed a great event.
Remember, while you need to be a member of AAW to
turn for the public at a club event, you do not have to be a member to come out and schmooze with the spectators
and display, perhaps to sell, your work.
There are three demonstrations left this year, one at
D’Art next Saturday, the Newport News Heritage Festi-val, October 5 and 6, and the Norfolk Maker’s Faire on
October 26th. Come on out and have a great time with
your fellow turners. See page 12 of this Newsletter for a summary of demonstrations past and present.
See Ray Kallman to sign up to attend.

Demonstrations at the D’Art Center September 14 and 21
Another new venue for our club to demonstrate has brought us to the D’Art Center in the Selden Arcade on
Main Street in Norfolk. We have set up demonstrations
in the main walkway of the Arcade to draw attention to our Artists’ Show which is on display in the main galler-
ies. There are three Saturdays in this series, so there is
still time to sign up for September 28th.
Like all our demos, all members are welcome to attend and participate, fully or in part, even if you don’t have
any pieces in the show. It’s a great venue, the parking is
close and free, and the whole event is under roof.
See Ray to sign up for the one remaining date at this loca-
tion, and see page 12 for more information.

Once again, your club will be engaging in a series of pub-lic demonstrations throughout the season. Those events
that are scheduled at this time are listed below. All mem-
bers are encouraged to participate. While we seem to get more than our share of rainy days, we all have a lot of
fun.
You do not have to be an AAW member to come out,
show your stuff, engage the audience, and learn from oth-er members. You do have to be an AAW member to op-
erate the lathes at these events, in order for you and the
club to be covered by the AAW’s liability insurance.
Don’t let that small restriction keep you away. There is
plenty to do at these events. Even those who do actually turn wood spend a big part of the time talking to visitors
and spectators.
A few weeks before each event Ray sends out an email,
seeking participants. Don’t miss the opportunity.
