President’s Message

Well another National Week has past. Once again I came away impressed by the dedication of our Members and their willingness to give of themselves for the benefit of others. Kudos to Flossie and her crew for staging our first outdoor National in many years. Not having the shows at the Host Hotel and yet arranging for all the auxiliary events to be there was daunting. Even the weather refused to help out as it was wet and cold. Still, from Rob Smith jumping in to Steward and Lynne Fardell being everywhere at the Show site, things got taken care of, and the week was a success. Congratulations to all who won placements and to all who competed. Well done!! The show itself was dedicated to Gary Carr who passed away earlier this year. Gary and his wife Susan have contributed so much to the sustaining of the Tibetan Terrier in this country. There is more about Gary elsewhere in this Newsletter. At the Board meeting we welcomed Amy Soderman as our new Treasurer, new Directors Sandy White and Rene Stamm, Paul Douglass who moved up from a Director position to 2nd Vice President and Gale Matteson, our past Treasurer, who accepted a 1 year assignment to fill a Director position vacancy.

President’s Message con’t

Thanks are also in order to 2 outgoing Board Members; 2nd Vice President Flossie Barczewski and Director David Murray. They will be missed as they brought so much “dog world knowledge “and just good common sense to issues facing the Board. One of the projects the Board is working is how to expand TTCA membership and add value to all owners of TTs. We realize that our membership is more than just those who show in Conformance and Performance events. Rene Stamm is heading up this effort. Please share with her, or any Board member, ideas you may have. For Performance enthusiasts, there will soon be a New TTCA Performance Versatility Award. Details are being worked out. Stay tuned. At the Annual Meeting Betsy Richards gave an overview of next year’s National Week, 29 May – 2 June, which will be held Peek’n Peak Resort in Clymer, NY. This is definitely something to plan a vacation around. Besides TTs of course, attractions include world class golf, pool complex, Segway tours, Ziplines and much more. Rates are very reasonable and are on a sliding rate schedule i.e. the longer you stay the less expensive per night. Keep checking the TTCA web site for details/updates. The awards portion of the night was personally very gratifying for me. I had the privilege of presenting recognition to three lovely ladies. The Alice Murphy Memorial Trophy was retired and given to Jill Hardy, the breeder of this year’s Grand Futurity Winner- Karma’s Staricon Lunar Eclipse. Flossie Barczewski was awarded The AKC Outstanding Sportsmanship Award. This is given to those who have made a difference in the sport of purebred dogs. This is a well deserved tribute to Flossie. And finally, by acclimation, the members present at the meeting approved and awarded Susan Carr Lifetime Membership in TTCA. I was honored to also award her the 2016 President’s Award for the many, many contributions she has made to TTCA and to the Tibetan Terrier. The phrase “could not have happened to a more deserving person” was never truer.May all have a great summer. Give your guys some shade, plenty of water and let them have a lick or two off your ice cream cone.

Delegate’s Report At the Annual Meeting of the American Kennel Club on March 8, 2016, the AKC Board of Directors Class of 2020 was elected. Patricia Cruz, William Feeney and Karolynne McAteer were elected. Thereafter, the Board of Directors met and elected Ron Menaker as Chairman and Carl Ashby II as Vice Chairman of the Board.

The official Delegates meeting was relatively short, as the election only took one ballot. The complete minutes can be read here: http://images.akc.org/pdf/delegate_minutes/Meeting-Minutes-Mar2016.pdf_ga=1.196158571.612069037.1450181675President Dennis Sprung reported at length about the AKC’s 2015 accomplishments. AKC’s total assets are the highest ever. The total individual registered dogs and litters was up from the prior year. Health remains a priority at AKC with a number of initiatives including the Bred with Heart Program.

There was little discussion on the issue of Delegate judges being able to charge a fee up to $150, and the proposed amendment did not get a 2/3 majority, so it was not adopted.

The committee meetings were more interesting, with some new (and some old) ideas discussed. The Parent Club Committee is asking that the Group Realignment committee be reconvened. There was general consensus that AKC should consider allowing Parent Club Rescue groups to list available dogs on the AKC marketplace without charge.  (As an aside, people were reporting a good response rate from their litter listings on the Marketplace.)

A proposal is floating around about having a Puppy of Distinction title or Puppy of Achievement certificate with points towards the title/certificate coming from 1st place wins in 4-6, 6-9 9-12 puppy classes. Basically, it is to get more people to participate in the puppy classes (and theoretically get new people hooked on showing.) The details aren’t worked out yet.  The general feeling of the Parent Club Committee was that they would prefer it be called Puppy of Achievement, be a certificate of achievement not a title, and that competition need not be present to get points.  Honestly, I think we’ll need to see a completed proposal with the details before deciding if it is a good idea or not.

The Dog Show Rules committee is continuing to grapple with the Rules on disqualifying dogs. The staff has implemented some of the recommendations of the Committee in the past, but my guess is that this issue is another one that won’t be put to bed for a while.

Feelings were mixed on the idea of AKC getting into the retail marketplace/pet care center business. Some people think that anything that increases awareness of AKCs brand is good, and that who know dogs better than AKC? On the other side are the people who think that AKC is one bad grooming job away from a PR disaster. They have a multiple year lease, so it’s a fait accompli, and only time will tell how it pans out.

There is going to be another push to get Club members to donate to the PAC. For all of the complaining that AKC is not doing enough legislatively, this fund receives significantly less donations than one would think. The PAC is now accepting periodically recurring gifts in addition to one time donations. Stacey LaForge

RESULTS

2016 National Specialty, Bear, Delaware In contrast to previous years the 2016 National events were held in four different locations, Obedience/Rally in Newark, DE; Agility in Elkton, MD; Conformation outdoors under the Big Top in Bear, DE and our host hotel in New Castle, DE. It may have seemed to some that everything was so far away, but in reality, they were no more than 20-30 minutes from each other, depending on where you were coming from (or going to), and even though we did not get the weather we wanted we had a lot of fun!  As always it was such a treat to see so many beautiful, high quality Tibetan Terriers in the performance and conformation rings.Congratulations to all the winners and participants who made this a memorable National, it was lovely to see many old friends and to welcome newcomers to the club too. Thanks for your kind remarks and thoughtful advice. They are all appreciated. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did. A very big THANK YOU to the Committee chairs, our last minute volunteers who stepped in to fill vacant spots, and the members of the Board who were active in making this happen. We couldn't have done it without your support.

Finally, many thanks to all of you who stayed for the Mid-Atlantic Regional Specialty on Friday, we hope you will come and enjoy our hospitality again next year!

Obedience and Rally at the 2016 National Specialty We had the pleasure of Nancy Withers judging Obedience and Rally. She has long been one of my favorite judges. She made the events a lot fun by being encouraging and helpful with our “Non-Traditional” obedience breed. Sherry Hurd had the courage to enter the Pairs Class. Ms. Withers was so helpful that some of the spectators are now considering trying this event next year.

WHY TITLE A DOG

Not just a brag, not just a stepping stone to a higher title, not just an adjunct to competitive scores, a title is a tribute to the dog that bears it, a way to honor the dog, an ultimate memorial. It will remain in record and in memory for as long as anything in this world can remain. Few humans will do as well or better in that regard.

And though the dog itself doesn’t know or care that its achievements have been noted, a title says many things in the world of humans, where such things count.

A title says your dog was intelligent and adaptable, and good-natured. It says that your dog loved you enough to do the things that please you, however crazy they may have sometimes seemed.

And a title says that you loved your dog, that you loved to spend time with it because it was a good dog, that you believed in it enough to give it yet another chance when it failed, and that, in the end, your faith was justified.

A title proves your dog inspired you to that special relationship enjoyed by so few; that in a world of disposable creatures, this dog with a title was greatly loved, and loved greatly in return.

And when that dear short life is over, the title remains as a memorial of the finest kind, the best you can give to a deserving friend, volumes of pride in one small set of initials after the name.

A title earned is nothing less than love and respect, given and received, and permanently recorded.
