Page 2: The ThThee 2014-15 Fraternal Year, Issue 4most family oriented holiday in this country. It seems that eve-ryone wants to get together with family on this holiday, despite all the jokes

Brother Knights,

As the Worthy Grand Knight has already

stated, October was a very active month and

we are coming up on Thanksgiving, Advent

and Christmas. All the kids (of all ages) have

had their fun with costumes and candy and

we continue to plan for celebrations. The

next two month are full of family oriented

events and celebrations. They say Thanksgiving is the single

most family oriented holiday in this country. It seems that eve-

ryone wants to get together with family on this holiday, despite

all the jokes about dysfunctional family thanksgivings. I seem to

be focused more on “family” this month than ever before. As I

was writing the article about our family of the month for Octo-

ber, it dawned on me that through the years I have known and

worked with many KofC families (the Ward’s, Clinch’s, Botticel-

li’s, Purtill’s, West’s, Krieger’s, Valenzuela’s, Todd’s, Hogans,

Freda’s, McGuires, just to name a few). The one common

thread that I have noticed is that they involved their kids in

KofC events. Associating with these young people has made me

very positive about today’s youth and what our country’s future

will be. Many of the kids have grown up and are away at college,

gotten married, gotten jobs and are starting lives (and families)

of their own. As a brother Knight I see that family life is very

important.

In many ways Father Diamond Council is much like a family. We

celebrate our successes together, we care about our brothers,

and yes we are sometimes dysfunctional; all the characteristics

of a family. We, as a family are joining together to help feed the

needy families in our parish and some of the homeless in DC at

the end of this month. I would ask everyone in the council to

support these efforts as much as possible. The need is great.

On another note, one of the loneliest things that can happen to

anyone is to not be with family on Thanksgiving. There are

some of our brother Knights who won’t be able to be with fami-

ly this Thanksgiving for one reason or another. If you know of

someone, who will be alone at Thanksgiving, why not invite

them to join you and your family for dinner?

Advent and Christmas are just around the corner. This is an-

other time for giving and thinking of family, in particular the Holy

Family. Why not work, play, and pray as a family this year.

Bring the family out to work the tree lot, give gifts to the angel

tree, and help deliver food and those gifts to less fortunate fami-

lies in the parish. Play with us at the annual Christmas dinner

and dance (see flyer inside), and pray with us at the crèche light-

ing the Sunday after Thanksgiving.

I thank all of you for being part of my “family”. Happy Thanksgiv-

ing!

Vivat Jesus

Family of the MonthFamily of the MonthFamily of the MonthFamily of the Month————OctoberOctoberOctoberOctober Family of the Month is recognition of a KofC Family who best exem-plifies what we believe in as Catholic Families. The Family of the Month for October is what we like to think of as a legacy family. Three generations of this family were extremely involved in Father Diamond Council activities in October. Brother Tom Hogan, (PGK, PDD, PSD), the patriarch of the family, was extremely in-volved with this year’s Columbus day Celebration held in Columbus Square in Washington, DC. Through his efforts we receive national recognition in honoring our namesake, Christopher Columbus. Tom coordinates efforts of the DC Park Service, national Columbus Cele-bration Association, delegations from Spain and Italy, and the Fourth Degree Assemblies in the Washington DC area to make this event a success. On the same day of this event, Tom joined his son, Tim Hogan (PGK, PDD), at the Fairfax Fall Festival. Tim was our chairman for the concessions at the Fall Festival this year (and for many years past). Tim coordinated a group of over 20 brother Knights who sold kielbasa sandwiches, hot dogs and hamburgers to thousands of shop-pers at the Fall Festival. This is a big coordination effort ensuring the supplies are bought, the trailer is set up, the health department codes are met and we have the “team” there to cook and serve. Despite bad weather conditions, Tim and his team made a nice profit on the event which will go towards supporting our charitable events. And let us not forget the third generation of Hogan’s represented by Tim’s youngest son, James Hogan (Inside Guard). James, a student at NOVA, is our council’s Keep Christ in Christmas (KCIC) Chair-man. Tim has coordinated with the 12 Christmas Tree Teams and has begun selling Christmas cards at all the masses at St Leo’s. James had his Christmas cards for sale at the Fall Festival, and the ladies’ Craft Fair. He started selling them at the Parish Picnic in September. The Hogan’s are a very active and involved KofC family that we are proud to honor as Family of the Month for October.

Knight of the MonthKnight of the MonthKnight of the MonthKnight of the Month————SeptemberSeptemberSeptemberSeptember Our choice for Knight of the Month for September is a brother Knight who has been involved on small and large way in nearly all of our council activities. He and his daughters help at the Family break-fast, Car Raffle Sales, KOVAR, Food Baskets for Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. We see this brother Knight at many events as a “helper”. In September, he was at the Parish Picnic, helping set up and tear down. He was at the Oktoberfest helping setup and even brought flowers for the dessert table. Yes, if we have flowers at an event it is probably because this special brother Knight brought them. In late July we reached out to this brother Knight and asked if he would help with and maybe co-chair an event we were having in late August. He said “sure, I’m not sure what it involves, but I can help.” In early August we decided to move it to September. This Knight took over leadership of the project, started getting out publicity in every way possible, organized the work parties, held a couple com-mittee meetings, negotiated with vendors for the best prices and in the end we had one of the most successful Crab Feasts ever here at the hall. We want to honor Charlie Krieger, not only for his great work as Chairman of the Crab Feast but for everything else he does in the background. Charlie, you are our choice for Knight of the Month for September!!

Fall Festival Concessions a Success Brother Tim Hogan would like to thank all our fellow knights who joined us on a cold, dreary, and misty Saturday in October to help raise money for the council’s charitable activities. We had 20 brother Knights join us on Friday night to load the trailer, Saturday morning to set up the concession site and all day on Saturday to sell sausages, hot dogs, hamburgers, sodas, chips and waters. Due to smart planning and careful food ordering we were able to make the event a financial success, despite the weather conditions.

Keep Christ in Christmas Card Sales Brother James Hogan with the help of all the Christmas Tree Teams has begun KCIC card sales in the back of the church. James started early at the parish picnic, sold at the Ladies Craft Fair and now his teams can be seen in the back of the church at every mass on weekends. If you want to help, call James at 703-385-1292.

Feed the Homeless Photo Event Held Greg Clinch, son of brother Nelson Clinch, held a unique fund raising event for Feed the Homeless on Sunday, October 26 at the KofC Hall. Greg, who is training to be a professional pho-tographer, took individual and family portrait photos in exchange for donations to Feed The Homeless. Greg raised $350 which was donated to Thelma Billy to help with here Feed the Home-less program. Thank you, Greg.

Chili Cook-Off The Second Annual Chili-Cook-off sponsored by our Hall Manag-er, Mike Purtill was a gastronomic success this year. We have some very talented chefs (chili cooks) in the council. This year we had 5 entries that were judged, by Pat McGuire, during the first half of the Redskins Game on Sunday, November 2. The winner this year is Nate Rasmussen with a very tasty beef and bean chili. Second place went to the Clinch’s red chili and Thelma Billy took 3rd place for her Philippine style Chili. Mike’s brother Dan got honorable (questionable) mention for his green pork chili. For a mere $3 you could have tasted all of these chili creations at half time at the Redskin’s Game. Cold beer, gourmet Chili and football—what a perfect afternoon.

Corporate Communion—Memorial Mass Sunday November 9 at 9:00 Mass we will honor all brother Knights who have passed away. There will be a reserved section in the middle of the church where all Knights are asked to sit with their families. Widows and mothers of deceased Knights have been asked to attend. We will have a short continental breakfast/reception in the hall immediately after mass. Come join the family. If you want to help with preparations contact Church programs Director, Mike Purtill at 202-251-8424.

Christmas Tree Sales to Begin Nov 30 The council will conduct is annual Christmas Tree Sales from Sunday 30 November to Monday 22 December. This is our big-gest fundraiser. The council raises over $9,000 from this event. The tree lot is open as follows:

Mon-Fri 3:30 pm to 9:00 pm

Saturday 9:00 am to 9:00 pm

Sunday 9:00 am to 6:00 pm.

This is also our most manpower intensive event. We need every-

one’s help to make this a success. Each Knight is assigned to a team. Each team is then assigned a number of weekend and weekday shifts which are three hours long. The schedule will be final-ized by 1 November. Team leaders will contact everyone. No one is required to work. We simp-ly ask that you help where and when you can. If

you have not been contacted by your team leader please contact Tim Tilson at [email protected] and he will direct you to a team. Additionally there is plenty of preparation work. On Friday 28 November the tree lot will be assembled. This entails moving the stands over to in front of the school, assembling them, putting up the signs, stringing the lights. We will start at 09:30. Please bring socket sets and drills. The 450 trees arrive on Saturday morning. We are asking the boy scouts and Knights to assemble no later than0830 to begin unload-ing. Unloading takes about an hour. Donuts will be provided but be quick as those scouts are hungry that early in the morning. If you have any questions about the tree sales or teams,. Please contact Tim Tilson at the above emails.

Rosary to End Abortion — November 8 We will meet at 8:00am on Saturday outside the church next to the statue of Mary to pray the Rosary. It takes about 45 minutes for the entire 20 decades and is a great way to start your day. If there is inclement weather the group moves inside to the left side of the church near the statue of Mary. Come join us, and bring the whole family. We usually have a very good turnout.

Nursing Home Bingo — Novem-ber 10 Each month the council runs a bingo game for the seniors at the Fairfax Nurs-ing Center. Brothers and their families are encouraged to meet on Monday at 7:15pm to help out. We are usually fin-ished by 8:30pm. What a wonderful opportunity to give the most valuable

gift—your time and love. Call Tim Tilson at (703) 273-9436 to volunteer.

Think About it—Bowling League Our non-sanctioned bowling league starts the first Sunday in January. We bowl at Bowl America in the City of Fairfax. Bowling starts about 6:15pm (right after 5:00pm Mass). The league is open to men and women (including teens). Council members, families and friends are invited to join. Contact David Whitcomb (703-591-7739) or Nelson Clinch (703-385-2146) if you are interested.

Spaghetti Dinner—after Crèche Lighting Traditionally we have held a Spaghetti Din-ner in the PAC immediately after the crèche lighting on Sunday, November 30. We need someone to volunteer to chair

this year’s event. Bill Weich who had chaired it in the past has volunteered to advise anyone who is interested. Con-tact DGK Herb Zimmerman at 703-385-9455 or [email protected] if you are interested in chairing this event.

Ways to Pay for Whole Life

We live in a world of options and we are constantly bombarded by choices. Some of these make our lives more com-plicated, but many of these choices are created with our satisfaction in mind.

At the Knights of Columbus, every product we offer has been designed solely for the benefit of our members and their families. When I present an option to you, it’s because a team of experts has discussed it at length to be certain it serves your best interest.

We have a few options on how you can provide and pay for the whole life coverage that your family needs. Many whole life policies call for premiums to be paid for your entire life or to age 100. But we also offer permanent life cov-erage with guaranteed cash values (and the potential to earn dividends, which are not guaranteed) through policies that offer a limited period of premium payments.

First, we offer “10 Pay Life” and “20 Pay Life.” Consider paying premiums for 10 or 20 years, and never having to pay for the coverage again. The plan is “paid up” and no more premiums are due. The plan stays in force, the death benefit remains intact and the guaranteed cash value continues to grow.

A plan with similar benefits is “Life Paid Up at 65.” The difference over 10 or 20 Pay Life plans is that this permanent product requires you to pay premiums until age 65. Then, premiums stop (just in time for retirement), but the plan remains in force.

Finally, the ultimate in limited pay is our Single Premium Life product. Imagine buying life insurance — permanent life insurance — and only paying one single premium? It’s possible.

To learn more about these products, our long-term care insurance, disability income or retirement products, please call me today.
