Held on the 15th of March 2019, all our learners had a great experience as we held our Annual Mini Cross-Country. We ran and jogged around the school for fitness and fun. Our learners had a healthy boost of their confidence, stamina, and improved mood. They were also energized and were generally happier after this run. The music played and motivation stamps given on learner’s hand added an extra punch of excitement.

Oshwal Academy Senior High took part in the above mentioned competition organised by UCLAN at St. Austin Academy Nairobi on 18th March, 2019.

Four schools took part in this event; Oshwal Academy Nairobi Senior High, Aghakhan Academy Nairobi, St. Austin School Nairobi and Brook House School Nairobi. Each school enrolled three students for the competition.

The judges were:

PEER COUNSELLORS MENTORS’ PRACTICUM EXPERIENCE

The Peer Counselling program started with the vision to make a positive difference in the lives of their peers. The students who joined the club had just one aim, to contribute to the society and promote mental health awareness both in and outside school.

We started its 7 week rigorous training program in January Basic Counselling skills and techniques, gaining self-awareness and personality development in order to produce an efficient and trustworthy group of students peer counsellors. The training focussed on how major life events impact individuals, types of personalities and role-playing which helped the students gain a perspective of how counselling works. The training ended with a written test which had a 100% pass ratio proving that the students had gained the qualities of a counsellor and were ready to gain a hands-on experience.

Practicum Experience

The Peer Counsellors made a trip to Kihumbu-ini Girls Secondary School in Gatanga, Muranga to have their first practicum with a group of 208 16 year olds. The peer counsellors mentored them on self-awareness and helped them deal with common teenage problems like peer pressure.

The Peer mentors were required to handle a group of 8-10 girls/mentees with whom they would mentor them on self-awareness. Under supervision of the school counsellor, they created rapport with them through skills gained, interacted with the students through discussions and answering the question that the student’s mentees had. The forums were concluded by Summary discussions of the entire group and discussing challenges they had encountered.

The Students counsellors were able to gain practice experience on counselling and mentorship of fellow mentors while also building their confidence and leadership in handling matters hand on.

ENTRY POINT ‘RESPECT’ VISIT TO NYUMBA YA WAZEESENIOR SCHOOL

Year 8 students visited Nyumba ya wazee in Tudor  for their IMYC entry point. They covered the unit Respect.

The students spent time at the home keeping the elderly company while singing along to a variety of songs, playing games and when it got interesting they danced. Later that afternoon, they were able to help them move around as they went for their meals. They later gave them simple gifts before leaving.

Every lesson in school is a stepping stone to provide and mould an all rounded citizen. The academy encourages learners to be empathetic towards people of different cultures, different abilities, ages and even among themselves.
