Several sets of documents in this heritage collection provide nearly exhaustive coverage of Québec publishing. BAnQ’s holdings also include documents published outside Québec but related to Québec by author or subject. Experts working at the preservation centre offer free of charge several workshops linked to BAnQ’s special collections. Presentation of BAnQ’s Special Collections

Workshop instructors: two collection specialists from BAnQ’s research and publishing department Duration: 2 hoursTarget audience: groups of researchers and professionals, teachers and college or university students, as well as members of the general publicAdvance reservations required. For groups of 10 to 30 participants. Offered in either French or English.

This introduction to BAnQ’s collections and related services available at the preservation centre provides an overview of nine sections in the heritage collection: posters, postcards, maps, prints, documentary iconography, early books, artists’ books and bibliophile books, performing arts programmes and ephemera, and art reproductions. Participants in this workshop will discover the richness of BAnQ’s special collections and learn how to use them effectively.

Special Collections and Historical Research

Workshop instructors: one or two collection specialists from BAnQ’s research and publishing department Duration: 3 hoursTarget audience: college or university students groups, members of historical societies and special interest groupsReservations must be made at least two months in advance. Offered in either French or English.

This workshop may be adapted to the research interests of participants. It provides participants with the opportunity to discover the main documentary sources in BAnQ’s special collections that are useful for historical research. Mapping America

Workshop instructor: Jean-François Palomino, map librarian with BAnQ’s research and publishing departmentDuration: 1 hour 30 minutesTarget audience: members of the general public, students and scholarsAdvance reservations required. This workshop can also be held offsite in a classroom environment. Offered in either French or English.

Following the publication of Mapping a Continent: Historical Atlas of North America, 1492-1814 and the exhibition Ils ont cartographié l’Amérique, this workshop introduces participants to the cartographic representation of the North American continent before the advent of satellite imagery, GPS and Google Earth. Geographic maps, irreplaceable witnesses to an astonishing quest for knowledge, are broached from various angles including how American Indians, «coureurs des bois» and European printers made their maps, and the purpose these documents served.

The Restoration of Early Maps: A World to Discover

Workshop instructor: Séverine Chevalier, restorer with BAnQ’s collections preservation department Duration: 1 hour 30 minutesTarget audience: members of the general public, students and scholarsOffered Tuesday, December 2, 2008, from 1:30 pm to 3 pm. Advance reservations required. Minimum of 10 participants required; maximum of 30 participants. Offered in French only.

Whether they served a geographic, military or travel purpose, whether their value was artistic or scientific, early maps were sometimes altered to suit their function at a given time. Often, such maps are in need of restoration. During this workshop, our specialist explains restoration work using specific examples and presents the important measures BAnQ takes to ensure the preservation of maps in its heritage collection.

A Personalised Presentation of Early Printed Books

Workshop instructor: Isabelle Robitaille, early printed book specialist with BAnQ’s research and publishing departmentDuration: 2 hoursTarget audience: students of library science, book and art history and history (registered by their professor)Advance reservations required. For groups of 5 to 25 participants. Offered in either French or English.

This workshop gives students an opportunity to acquaint themselves with early printed books—early books, documentary iconography and broadsheets—through the examination of original copies and an introduction to the descriptive vocabulary of objects. Depending on the course objectives specified by the professor, the presentation can focus on aspects of early printed books such as incunabula (layout, colophon, printers), paper, illustrations, binding (evolution of decoration, identification of periods and styles, materials), and Québec books (first presses, types of publications, etc.).

A Personalised Presentation of Artists’ Books

Workshop instructor: Élise Lassonde, artists’ book specialist with BAnQ’s research and publishing departmentDuration: 2 hoursTarget audience: professional artists, special interest groups, college and university students in visual arts, photography, traditional or digital printing arts, art history, binding, graphic design, typography and other disciplines

Reservations required at least two months in advance for groups of 10 to 30 participants. Offered in French only.

This workshop on artists’ books may be adapted to meet the specific requirements of a professor, group leader or group of artists. Participants are invited to consult a selection of 30 to 50 artists’ books from BAnQ’s heritage collection, selected according to the needs of the group. The activity also includes a brief presentation of the institution’s special collections—posters, contemporary and early prints, early books, bibliophile books, etc.—legal deposit and other services.
