Second super-sized load passes through

Christmas fair

The second of three super-sized loads carrying weightytransformers from Didcot power station came through our areaon Sunday.Travelling from Oxfordshire to Avonmouth Docks, thetransformer was transported down Tog Hill and through Wick, where again steel plates had to be laid to reinforce the A420where it passes over two culverts. The convoy then came through Bridgeyate and Warmley andtook the ring road to the M32, before rejoining the M4 and goingon the M5 to Avonmouth.Again the load had to travel on the wrong side of the dualcarriageway from the Bromley Heath roundabout towardsHambrook to avoid a weak bridge on the westboundcarriageway.Allelys Heavy Haulage of Studley is transporting thetransformers which are too heavy for the M4 near junction 19. Again lots of spectators turned out to see the unusual sight but

if you missed it, the third load is expected to come along thesame route this Sunday.

Strike action inSouth Glos haltedIndustrial action by Unison members in SouthGloucestershire has been halted for a second timeafter a meeting with the council to try to resolve theongoing pay dispute. After Friday’s meeting, thecouncil confirmed that therewould be no industrial actiontaking place last weekend, adding: “Further negotiationswill take place to resolve theissue.”Last Tuesday 95 per cent ofstaff at the Vinney GreenSecure Unit at EmersonsGreen, which cares for some of the most troubled andtroublesome young people in the country, began a 60-hourwalkout. Managers are understood to have covered the shifts. And workers in libraries and care homes and civil enforcementstaff walked out for four hours the previous Saturday after thecouncil’s offer of a short-term buyout payment in return for givingup Saturday payments was rejected. There have now been four rounds of industrial action by Unisonwhich says the cuts have meant a pay cut of 10 per cent forsome already very low-paid workers.

Plans to revolutionise theprovision of advice services inBath and North East Somersethave been put on hold followingchaotic scenes at last Thursday'smeeting of the full council at theGuildhall in Bath. The future of the Citizens' AdviceBureau service in the district had beenunder threat since B&NES Councilannounced a 55% cut in its adviceservices budget and a new set of criteriafor the awarding of the next contract. The CAB was awarded a five-yearcontract in 2008 but the Lib Dem runcouncil had begun the tendering processfor the new contract from next Aprilaimed at helping only the mostvulnerable groups in society and relyingmore on Council One Stop Shops formuch of the work presently provided bythe bureau.A petition against the cuts achieved

4,000 signatures, automaticallytriggering a debate at full council, andlast week a motion by Conservativecouncillors opposed to the cuts wasadopted. It called on the council to putthe current tendering process on holduntil such time as the council hadactually agreed a strategy for the adviceservices it needed to provide. In scenes witnesses described as"farcical", Liberal Democrat councillorsultimately dropped their own motion, which would have committed the councilto pushing ahead with the plans, anddecided to instead support aConservative proposal calling a pause tothe process.Conservative Shadow Spokesman forWellbeing, Cllr Vic Pritchard, whomoved the proposal said: "The fact thatover 4,000 people signed a petitionagainst the council's cuts to the CABdemonstrates just how passionate

people areabout thissubject. It'sclear just howmuch people valuehaving a high-profile generalist adviceservice which they know they can turn toduring times of difficulty. If the LiberalDemocrats had been allowed to ploughon with their previous plans, this servicecould be lost forever."Keynsham South councillor Alan Hale(Con) also spoke during the debate andpointed out the potential danger of thecouncil providing so many adviceservices when, for many residents, theirproblems may actually be with thecouncil itself. The matter will now be deferred until thecouncil's 2014 budget meeting inFebruary.

Plans to axe B&NES' adviceservices put on hold

LettersTwo messages toKeynsham-itesDear Sir,I would like to say Thank You to all thelovely Keynsham people I spoke to onthe High Street on a rainy Saturday. Iwent out with: “Excuse me, I'm thinkingof starting up my own business, could Iask you two questions?” and 45 let me! Based on your answers I'm going to gofor it - I spoke to some fantastic peoplewho gave me great feedback andthoughtful suggestions. I can help withtackling your paperwork heaps, completing forms and making difficultphone calls (I call it Life Admin - 0117983 9609). On another note, feeling dismayed atTaylor Wimpey insulting us with callingtheir site The Meadows, I decided toresearch a name for the site that willsurround Holmoak playground. I foundout that a local family called Bilbie madebells for churches (and clocks) and oneof theirs is in St John’s. I was amazedthat Barratt liked my suggestion of BilbieGreen. Sorry if anyone had a better idea- perhaps they need road names too? Mrs Sue Ashman

An expensive night outDear Sir,I felt I must write to say yet againB&NES’ parking policy has shot itself inthe foot.As a regular theatre goer I arrived atCharlotte Street car park in Bath to findthat it is now no longer free parking after7pm but they have changed it to 8pmwhich means a visit to the theatre where

productions start between 7.30pm and8pm will now cost £5.40 in the main carpark used for the theatre, which is atbest an expensive night out.I'm sure people will start to think twiceabout a visit to their theatre with thisadditional charge. I always thoughtB&NES were trying to promote Bath asthe city for culture - obviously only forthose who can afford it!Peter CarterWarmley

Wind warningDear Sir,Over the past few months, many criticalcomments have been made regardingthe Keynsham town centredevelopment, now looming up in front ofus in all its monstrous glory.

I wonder though, if the ‘anarchic’architects involved have realised theymay have made a big faux pas?It can be seen that there is an avenuebetween two of the tall blocks, openingat one end opposite the bottom of RockRoad.Ask anyone local and they will tell youthat when the wind is strong and in thewest, a funnelling effect takes place due

to the topography of Rock Road. This isparticularly noticeable at the bottom, near Iceland. It follows then that this air flow is morethan likely to continue through thedevelopment and may be exacerbatedfurther by the narrowing of this gap at thefront.Take a look and you will see what Imean.I can only hope the next westerly galedisproves my theory. We will see.Yours sincerely,Robert Drower

Thank youDear Sir,I would like to say a big thank you to thepeople who helped me and stayed withme when I was taken ill by KeynshamPark gates last Monday (11thNovember). I went into hospital but wasallowed home later.Thank you once again.Name and address supplied

LettersPraise for Emersons GreenNHS Treatment CentreDear Editor,Last month I visited Emersons GreenNHS Treatment Centre for a kneereplacement surgery assessment.I had a thorough medical check-up and

the surgeon confirmed that I required afull knee replacement. The doctors, nurses, physio staff and all the auxiliarystaff were incredibly kind and helpful andI left full of confidence and optimism. Two weeks after, I went in for the surgeryand the whole procedure that followedwent amazingly smoothly.I was treatedwith great care, kindness and efficiencythroughout my three days’ stay.I am in my mid-80s and have had littleprevious experience of hospitals orsurgery. I am now at home doing theprescribed physio exercises andimproving daily.I have nothing but praise for this

organisation and wish them everysuccess for the future.Mr H Jones, Keynsham

Donate to PhilippinesappealDear Stephen,I know your journal is aimed at localpeople on local issues but the enormityof the disaster in the Philippines puts intothe shade any problems we ourselvesmay have. However poverty-stricken weperceive ourselves to be, in not verymany weeks' time, most of us will bespending obscene amounts of money onChristmas presents for people whoprobably don’t really NEED them. So why, for a change, don't we, as we sitin our comfortable, well-heated, well-lit,homes, with food and water inabundance, spare a thought for thosemillions of people who, through no faultof their own have absolutely nothing - nofood, no clean water no shelter and littlehope for the future - and donate some orall of it to the relief fund? Sincerely,Mike Openshaw

Living WageDear Sir,At last week's Bath and North EastSomerset Council meeting, the LabourGroup submitted a motion calling on thecouncil to introduce the Living Wage rate(£7. 65 an hour outside London) for itslowest paid employees. This is in linewith 18 other councils, including SouthGloucestershire, and many private firmswho have introduced this policy, which issupported by leaders of all three mainnational political parties.Sadly this proposal, which would havehelped our lowest paid workers through

the present cost of living crisis, and alsoacted as a model for local businesses, was defeated by a combination ofConservatives and Liberal Democrats. However the Liberal Democrats in theirembarrassment did propose removingthe two lowest pay scales from thecouncil system. The Labour Groupsupported this because it at least raisedthe lowest pay rate to £6.69. It is achange that would not have happened ifwe hadn’t submitted our Living Wagemotion but we recognise it is secondbest and we will continue to campaignfor the Living Wage in our council andour community.Yours,Cllr John Bull(Leader of B&NES Labour Group)

20mph speed limitDear Sir,As I trundled down the Wellsway with myfoot on the brake pedal, trying to hold myancient car back to 20mph, I wonderedabout the wisdom and consequences ofimplementing the 20mph limit. Are the bus timetables to be revised? Are the new limits to be enforced?Failure to enforce any speed limit musttend to bring all speed limits intodisrepute. Will I be the first person to becaught exceeding the new limit? I hopenot. As I look in my rear view mirror andsee the queue of vehicles behind me, Ihope that frustration will not result aserious accident caused by unsafeovertaking. Perhaps in due course wewill be told how the accident rate hasbeen affected by the new limits. Somany signs - will they bring benefits?YoursRichard Pannett, Keynsham

Lola, Rosie and Fu are just three rescued pets looking for newhomes. They are being cared for by the charity HEART (Homing &Emergency Animal Rescue Team) formed in 1996 and run by Angeand Gill from their homes in Keynsham and Bedminster Downrespectively.

Lola is a lovely two-year-old black Labrador while Fu is a nine-year-old female tabby who needs a quiet home without children and hasbeen with the charity for some months now. Black and white Rosie is described as “ a very, very sweet cat” andis also looking for a kind home.

There are many ways you canhelp HEART even if you don’tfeel you can offer a pet ahome. You might like to

consider fostering - foster homes are always needed and thecharity pays for food and any costs incurred, including vets’ bills. You could also host a fundraising event – a recent coffee morningraised £100 for the charity. Help is also needed transportinganimals as well as collecting donations of food, equipment or itemsto sell at car boot sales in aid of the charity. You can also sponsor animals while they are waiting for a newhome or undergoing veterinary treatment. For more information visit the HEART website athttp://www.heartrescue.org.uk/ or call 0117 953 5663.

The recent upgrade of SaltfordHall's sound system is the latestin a series of improvements andrefurbishments at the popularvenue.Built in 1958 with a significant inputfrom volunteers, it was largely thevision of the late Gordon Reed, anavid theatre lover. It was his foresightwhich led to the fly tower beingincorporated into the design, a facilitywhich allows for up to six backdrops tobe lowered onto the stage. Not surprisingly, Saltford Hall isfavoured by local drama groups, including Keynsham Light OperaGroup and Saltford Drama Club, but

over the years, the 250-seat venuehas played host to a wide variety ofperformances and events as varied asBBC's Gardeners' Question Time,Leslie Crowther and the Risca MaleVoice Choir. The new sound system includes newamplifiers and speakers as well as ahearing loop and complements otherrecent work on the bar, kitchen andfoyer to make Saltford Hall a muchbetter experience for audiences. When not hosting theatrical or musicalperformances, the hall functionsthroughout the day as a communitycentre for dance and exercise groups, exhibitions and public meetings.

Change your mind about pain Celebrating equality anddiversity at St Brendan’sFrom a small room, in Hanham people are experiencing big

changes in their lives. Marc Bishop, a clinical hypnotherapist, who moved to Bristol fromLondon earlier this year, has been building his hypnotherapypractice. He has been helping people to deal with a variety of issues fromhabit and dependence issues, abuse recovery and surprisinglylong-term pain problems. “Since using hypnotic anaesthesia on a young girl who had lost herfoot in a car crash, I have continued to push the boundaries ofhypnosis and self-hypnosis for pain control and do not yet believewe have reached the limits of its capability,” said Marc.As part of his practice Marc will be running a series of painmanagement workshops at Hanham Community Centre eachMonday evening. During the six-week course he will be teaching acomplete range of techniques allowing you to manage, reduce andsometimes eliminate pain completely. These workshops cover awide range of pain problems, such as fibromyalgia, migraineheadaches and oncology. “Pain is a debilitating issue that travels to the very core of people’slives. As human beings pain is nature’s way of telling us thatsomething is wrong, we can’t exist without it, but we certainly don’thave to live with it," he added.Details of these workshops are available on Marc's website athypnosemantics.co.uk or see his advertisement .

St Brendan's Sixth Form College at Brislington has been celebratingequality and diversity with a programme of music, comedy, dance, food, activities and fun.St Brendan’s draws more than 1,600 students drawn from acrossthe West of England and beyond. The themed week included lunchtime activities from every continent- from African dance and drumming to henna painting andBollywood, a samba workshop and Capoeira demonstration, toKung-Fu and a Europe-wide quiz.A visit from comedian Jesse Young - a young and gifted universitystudent, who is also bi-polar, explored issues of mental health, whilea sign language workshop was on offer to those who wanted toexplore deaf communication and culture.Classroom projects included work on equality and anti-discriminatory practice in health and social care, and collectingrecipes from around the world in languages. A-level Law students staged a mock trial which raised the issues ofdiscrimination and freedom of religion, and sports students had achance to try out wheelchair basketball. Finally the college surveyed staff and students and found that theyspeak more than 45 different languages, from Armenian, andBristolian to Wolof and Yoruba.

Keynsham & District Mencap Society FC played well in the SouthWest Disability League tournament on Sunday 10th November, winning two, drawing one and losing one of their four games.

The players were BarryHollyman, Dean Cole,Ivan Stephens, JethroPayne, Jordan Phillips,Phil Blouet, MikeBawdon, Richard Yendleand Steve Owens. The tournament beganwith a respectful two-minute silence forRemembrance Sunday.

Following their exciting 6-4 win over Portishead, Keynsham hadtwo home league games last week.On a freezing Tuesday evening, Chippenham Park were thevisitors to the AJN Stadium and the spoils were shared in a 2-2draw.After a cagey opening, Keynsham slowly began to come into thegame and went one up on 22 minutes when a shot from captainSeb Spiller was sliced into his own net by a Chippenham defender.Keynsham were now fully on the front foot, pushing to secure asecond goal before half time. However, all the hard work wasundone right on the stroke of half time, when Chippenham brokeaway and slack defending left an unmarked forward to turn the ballhome. The second half started slowly but an injury forced off Scott Brain, making his first start since last season, and young striker LiamRobson entered the game on 54 minutes. Ryan Ashwood wascausing the Chippenham defence problems and his pressure ledto a second goal for the Ks on 72 minutes. Spiller picked up theball in his own penalty box and brought it out of defence, playinga long ball forward. The Chippenham keeper charged out of hisarea but missed the ball completely, allowing Ashwood to calmlyroll the ball into an empty net.Instead of settling the game, this fired Chippenham up and theybegan coming forward with more intent and on 80 minutes theylevelled the score at 2-2. A throw-in found Nolan outside the boxand he hit a thunderous drive against the underside of the bar andin. In the final ten minutes either side could have taken all three pointswith both going close, but in the end a draw was a fair result. On Saturday, mid-table Chard Town were the visitors and leftCrown Fields with a comfortable 3-0 victory. Keynsham neverrecovered from conceding an early goal and the defensive errorsthat have blighted their season to date returned to haunt them. The defeat leaves Keynsham a place and a point off the foot of thetable and they will be hoping for an improvement in their nextleague game at Westbury on Saturday 23rd November (kick-off3pm). Before that though, they were travelling to Ashton &Backwell for a Les Phillips Cup 1st Round tie on Wednesday (20thNovember)In the meantime, the club have announced the results of theOctober 500 Club draw: 1st prize (£50) Jane Smale; 2nd prize(£30) Victoria Perry; 3rd prizes (£10 each) Stuart Nethercott,Martin Carter & Seb Spiller.

The Kingswood Knights U11s had a very evenly matched gameagainst Nailsea and Backwell. The team showed determination and commitment throughout thegame but were pipped to the post in the end. Final score: Nailsea & Backwell 10-7 Kingswood KnightsScorer: Mathew Reed .Man of the Match: Lewis Baker

Jamie Hawkins completed a successful weekend when he beatColin Streams to win Keynsham's open snooker tournament onSunday 10th November. The previous day, he also won the juniorcompetition, beating Mitchell Hooper in the final. However, he just fell short of a hat trick of victories, losing out toLeon Bond in the final of the junior pool event.

Keynsham's U15 team made a great start in defending their juniorleague title by beating Beaufort, a club based in Cotham. As the score line of 20-1 suggests, it was an emphatic win and itwas especially pleasing as Keynsham didn't field their strongestteam. Two league debutants, Mike Cini and Ewan Joyce, quicklyovercame early nerves to settle down and record comfortable winsin both their singles and doubles games. The other two regular league players, Callum Nicholls and GeorgeBeck, were always comfortable in their games and achieved veryefficient wins. There is no room for complacency though. The nextmatch against Uphill on Sunday 1st December at BroadlandsAcademy at 2pm will prove a much sterner test for both Keynsham'sU15 and U18 teams.
