~^Q :< oar s^ o n d edition of “ The Perisco p e” we have besn ;■ inundated with m ateiial— chiefly pn et'y— and wish to th in k each a n i all of our contributors for their hearty cooperation. W e have been unable to ^ive publication to, all contributions ; had we done so it w mid h iv j necessitated a journal ten times the capacity of this one and a bodyguard of at least h .If a Battalion to protect us.

Oh, Ye happy Poets !! Ye kn >w not wh t aching he-ids ye h a v j caused us !! iiith e rt » we had associated poetical inspirations with lengthy, if not always

T he following cepy of a letter received from the Officer Com manding the 7th Reinforcem ents Draft is published for the information of all ranks :—

D ear M ajor Austin,—As Officer com

m anding the ■ ,7th Reinforcem ents, I wish to congratulate the officers and m/en of T ransports Nos 30 and 34 on the excellent behaviour of the troops while at Frem antle. T he good name *—that of being the best disciplined of the Colonial T roops— earned for the Dominion during the South African War, as well as during the present war, has been more than upheld . After j the r previous experiences of troops proceeding 10 the front, the Authorities at F rem antle were very J'xrth to allow the men to hind, and when I guaranteed good behaviour I was met with the answ er that the same guarantee had been give* with respect to previous troops whose subsequent behaviour had been far from good. Eventually the sanction was granted, but even then the Commissioner at Police came down from Perth prepared to cope with an outbreak ot iarrikinism. A fter the men retu rned on board, the Commissioner of Police and the Mayor of Frem antle congratulated me on the excel^nt behaviour of the troops, and the Mkyor stated that he proposed to send a congratulatory cable to New Zealand. This is a record that should m ake every man p roud of his unit and of himself.

T he m arching during the route march was very good, particularly the return m arch, the covering in fours being especially rem arked on.

I should have liked to have let the m en ashore on Saturday morning. U nfortunately those men who did not play tfee game prevented this beimg done,

since it would have been im possible tor the Police ?»nd Piquets to trace m ea, absent Without leave, if the o ther men, had been ashore on leare.

It should be made known to the men collected by the Piquets that their thanks are due to the Civil Police, Force Police and Piquets, for had they been left behind they could only have been, treated as deserters, and I cannot imagine that they would have ever cared to thow th jir faces in New Zealand again.

R eports received from 1 the Perth Military Authorities eulogise the b eh a \u ur of the m en of T ransports 31, 32 and 33 anri »,l their stay at Albarr .. All three Transports left that Port with the fulK com plem ent01 their nun .

^ ours sincerely,(Signed) h . T. FU LT O N ,

Lieutenaat-Coloi e!L

T he Officer com man ing H.M.N.Z T. No 30 desires, on his own behalf, to thank all ranks for the adm irable conduct that I as evoked such high praise troin the Officer Com manding 7th Kein- foi cem ents as w e ll as fr©» the CiuL Authorities of the ports of c a l.

No. 8/2957, PR IV A T E J E F F R IE S ROLAN D -G O RD O N ,

“ D ” Com pany1, 7th Reinforcem ent?.It is with deep regret that we have

to record the death of above-named on board H*M.N.Z. T ransport No. 34 a t 11-15 a.m. on the 2nd November.

T he funeral was. held at 2 p.m. on- the same day, and as a token of respect, all troops onboard H.M.N.Z. Troopship- No 30 were paraded on deck, the engines stopped, and the band played the Dead March while the body was. committed to the deep.

A Lit gp G nirden Party was given by! some haif dozen hostesses in the beauti- fu> grounds of Birdcage House on Saturday last. T h e gu irdens were undoubtedly looking their best and the pleasing profusion of tropical vegetation g ive delight to all. One lo^g bed of «,;range peel was perhaps the most ad mr'ed, but many found their way i sto the vegetable gnarden where the neat rows of cabbages, turnips, and all sorts of vegetables, in and out of season, gave rise to many appetising thoughts, All the paths w ere sprinkled for. the

ccasion with soft coal dust, which gave pleasing relict from the fierce glare of the sun.

Amongst the guests I noticed Mrs. Fulsom e in a smart grey costume with

touches of * ed and a large grey picture bat. Miss Snugless was similarly >1 tired. Miss Tonic wore a charming confection of soft grey material made with a pinafore front of white, and a delicious white summer straw hat U'i m ned with black velvet. Miss Sum m erworth also wore grey and one oi the Elizabethan collars with cerise edging, patent leather shoes with diamond buckles.

Quite a pleasing conceit in the w ay oi French innovations is the fashion of w aring sleeve decorations. Large numbers are w earing one, two, and even th r e e . euibroidered chevrons on the sleeve. T he effect is undoubtedly striking and it the fashion becomes vogue w e can expect shortly to find no unadorned sleeves.

T h e old crepe-de-chene so much in favour last season seems to have gone quite out of fashion and present indications point to the new crime-de-sheet taking its place. W e have noticed quite a lot of startling fabrications made s i p o f this material.

• ;Shoes seem to h ive quite ousted b >ots as fashionable footwear. Some of the new canvas ones worn w.ti. flesh coloured socks are very smart.

Kiss curls will not be worn this com ing season, a novel effect being obtained by dressing the coiffure as low and as close to the head as possible.

In the w indow s of Guatre, M aitre & Cie we have noticed some very smart linen costumes in blue and drab with no trimmings whatsoever. A lso a very stylish light khaki coloured c -at and skirt with hat to match, having a single black ornament in front whilst a b o id belt and bronze buckle furnished oif i delightful creation.

Denims are very much worn this season.

T he engagem ent is announced of ! Mr. M. Adgucan to Miss Crimeham.

Mr and Mrs Fulsom e with a large party of friends and retainers have left on a yachting cruise for the M editerranean,

Another engagem ent of much local interest is that of Dr. V o gel to Miss Tussis.

Miss D. Faulters is paying a r. und of visits to these parts.

Since the publication of the last Birthday H onors list quite a num ber of our friends are writing C.B. after their names. It is purely an honom y title, little sought but much run after.

T he Misses M achine-Gunn, who have been suffering from shock sustained at Rangiotu, have quite recovered, and we expect to see them about again in the course of a day or two. r

W o 'uvve many h rjrs of real enjoyment and relax ition to tlie’ above committee in arranging and c mducting various .branches of Sports and C on ceits. W ant of accommodation for spectators was a g r e i t drawbac’-c, with theconseqn n;etha: many vverelocked out, but tliisr.wa; unavoidable!

T h e first c ^ce t, given b y f,A ” Com pany, was somewhat unfortunate, due undoubtedly to the rong’i se i and the unsteadiness of the bo it, causing m iny contributors to seek refuse nT llieir. berths or over the r<il. H >w_ver, iiiey came on later, and their Star turn m R fm . Robin >>n was excellent.

“ B ” C imp iiiy’s coicert, with the assistance of the Bind, was-a decided success. Sert. Bayer rendered that pathetic “ malady” “ England will see it through” in such a m inner as to convince us that he alone could do it, and I ’ m sure we all felt v e r y : superfluous that evening. J&fm. Smythe, Luxford, Hay )ittle and Brodziak all gave a good a .c ju n t of themselves. Haybittle in j) u ticular causing much merriment with his song entitled “ The Village Pump” as did Brodziak in his rendering of “ T h e Whistling Stutter” and “ TheSilver King.’”

No.v cam e “ C ” Company in an at- lempt to outdo all forerunners. T hey toad the benefit of experience and certainly took advantage of ‘ it. Lieut. L an kshear took us on a trip to “ Ould Qk-p^nd” w ith his rendering of a

couple of Irish songs dealing with tlnse charming vima;delis of whom we have read so much but have.very rarely seen. Both songs were given with such an amount of feeling that we can have no hesitation in placing Mr Lankshear’s tender spot! Sergeants Armstrong, Be;.t;ie and Makeham, Corporals Bar-

keep a straight face when Schaeffer gets >n his L ’et should visit Madame I us- sandsc and lose himself. Rifleman 0. mis ton is an excellent elocutionist, the manner in which he portrays his characters leaves nothing to be desired, out it will do him no harm to learn to raise his voice slightly.

Tlie ia-t Comp my concert was given by “ D ’ Company, and it was quite evident ih *.t tlu y had done a tremendous imp.*nt of preparatory work. The iri ;in .lily of their p rogam m e. was its outstanding feature, and much ere Jit is due to H.ifi man Daniell for m >st of the iuspirati ai. Sister Cumberwortli ve-ty luate'iially assisted on the“ sh:ps tinkler” uid we i cl a very brotherly gratitude towards her for he:- cap.V le work. Japt sin Cowie came to 1 glit and set an „-xmij le to other Company Commanders. Sergt. Major Har ley started “ Tom Bo a ling” with the piano but entered die straight alone:— the result was never in doubt and the applause deafening. Sergeants Gear, Hunt and Roache all lived up tp their reputations while SergeaBt Tyfer conducted the Male Voice Ohoir and wielded the baton

Be.mhardier, Skidm ore, D riveis Holiis and Fret man! also took part, and valuable aid was given by the Rifle Brigade Band, which rendered several selections in a music- ianly m anner.* '1 he Padre ably controlled the proceedings, althogh Major G il' accused him of misreading the programme when he called on the genial M ajor for a com ic song. T he audience w ere disappointed that the little man from W estport did not give them th opportunity of hearing his silvery tenor.

F IR v T DAY :— Many in teres 'ing boxine contests 'were fought, and it might be stated w ithout fear of con- trad i tion, that we witnesst d some ^ood h u d an I clean hitting, and pi -my of pluck. Boxing will certainly cure any faint hearts and should take a } rom i- nerit p i r t in the training of a soldier.

Space f rb ’ds our describing th e rounds fully, but we cannot refrain fiom touching upon a few outstandingfeatures.

Ao ( xc^ll^nt exhibition in the heavyweights w is given bv Rfm Fogarty and Haggai t, both shewing a good am ount of scie. ce, bu t the last-nam ed was handicapped through want of training in 1 consequently could no tlast, Fogarty being declared th^ winner on points.

I 1 the mid lieweights, a bout betw een Ron K night and Skivington cause 1 m my thrills. Skivington stopped a real bum per in a right hook t > jaw, which sent him to the boards, but he regained his feet and was Jgiven time, to re c o \e r his se n s 's by ni, worthy opponent, who could ea^i y have given him a knock-out had he cared t > do so. Finally Skivington cam e on and wnk given the verdict over Knight on points. H ard luck for Ivnight, who thus suffered for his ga la a try

als 1 a considerable advantage in weight, being declared an easy winner.

A hum ourous feont was witnessed: between Rfm Stroud and M M cGarthy, the la tte r landing one great punch, on the most prom inent point of S troud’s dial, causing a to ttering effect sncb as could not be gained on shore at the cost of a m onth’s wages.

Rfm Moore and O’Connor m et in the m iddleweights, and we rem em ber seeing nothing like 'it. Moore went in and pum m elled his opponent for a solid two-minutes, until the gong sounded. One~round was enough ! !

SECOND DAY Rfm Cowan and Fogarty met in the second round of the heavyweights and showed g rea t science T he bout was p retty even, with stra igh t hard hitting, but weight and reach told in the end, and Cowan won a well-fought b ittle .

Rfm Sm ith and McLean came into the ri g, but Smith was a ltogether o u tclassed.

Much am usem ent was provided by Ser^t. Robinson in his ta rn with Rfm; Sproat, th e la tte r evidently n r staking Rebinsou’s “c e n ie cf g rav ity ’’ fo r; punch-ball. After taking very severe punishm ent with g reat pluck and a sm iliag countenance, Robinson le tt the ring beyond recognition. To use a little Irish we only knew him by knowing his opponent.

O’Connor and Skivington fought in the m iddle’weights, the first named being declared the winner, though the latter stuck to his guns with true British pluck.

In the light-weights Menzies beat Morris in two hits and Fitzm aurice rushed Yardley to such an ext«nt th a t the la tte r gave up the'sponge in the first round.

The Boxing contests no t being com pleted before going to press, we appei d below the gemi-final rounds, leaving blank spaces for the insertion of the names of the w inners •
