On Saturday, April 9, from 10:00 a.m. to noon, organist Jason Roberts will
present an Improvisation Workshop at First Congregational Church, 444 East
Broad Street, Columbus. His workshop is presented as a Columbus Chapter event.
The concept of improvising at the organ can be fraught with trepidation for most
of us, but Jason’s very sensible, down-to-earth approach can be of assistance to
organists of all skill levels.
Jason Roberts is Associate Director of Music, Organist and the Director of the
Boy and Girl Choristers at the famed St. Bartholomew’s Church in New York
City. Prior to St. Bart’s, Jason was at St. James's Church in West Hartford, CT,
where he built one of the largest choral programs in the Hartford area, which
included 35 children and more than 30 adults. He holds degrees from Rice
University, Yale University and the Manhattan School of Music.
Jason is a sought-after recitalist in the U.S. and was chosen to play last summer at
the Regional Convention of the American Guild of Organists in Hartford. An avid
improviser, he won first prize at the AGO National Competition in Organ
Improvisation in 2008 and was a finalist at the St. Alban's International Organ
Competition in 2011 (Improvisation).
Jason is a seasoned choir trainer, whose entire life has revolved around the
Anglican Church, having begun singing as a Chorister in the Cathedral Choir in
Perth, Australia, where his family lived for several years. His love of teaching
children brings a sense of continuity to the Choristers program with a fresh and
vital approach. His considerable gifts in improvisation have enriched St. Bart’s
hymn singing and extemporized musical moments in the liturgy.
Dr. Roberts will present a full recital on Sunday, April 10, at 4:00 p.m. on the
Concerts at First Church series. Although not specifically a Chapter event,
Chapter members are welcome and encouraged to attend. His program will
include the music of Marcel Dupré, Maurice Ravel and others.

The Dean’s Comments The Christmas tree had barely been taken down and
the decorations packed away for another year when the
first AGO event of 2016 was upon us. Fortunately, it
proved to be a thrilling way to begin the New Year.
On January 8, Madeleine Woodworth, the 2015 Great
Lakes Regional Competition winner, gave an organ
recital at Livingston UMC in downtown Columbus.
Madeleine presented a varied program including works
of Bach, Franck, Widor, and Tchaikovsky. She also
included works of more contemporary composers Peter
Eben and Jeanne Demessieux. Madeleine rounded out
her program with her own improvisation of Christmas melodies called
Christmas Pentatonic. The audience was appreciative of both her excellent
playing and the colorful combination of sounds that she elicited from the
Bunn=Minnick organ at Livingston Church. Everyone enjoyed the reception
following the concert which afforded the opportunity for AGO members to chat
with Madeleine.
Madeleine is a student at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, where
she studies with Nathan Laube. She will be featured as a “Rising Star” at the
AGO National Convention in Houston this summer. This concert was her first
outside her native Chicago area, and she was thrilled with the hospitality and
warm reception given to her by the Columbus Chapter. I suspect we will hear a
lot about Madeleine in the years to come.
Our next event is a workshop presented by acclaimed organist and improviser
Jason Roberts at First Congregational Church on April 9. There is a concert on
the following day, Sunday, April 10. Please see the related article in this issue
for more details. I hope everyone is able to attend this exciting pair of events.

The Columbus Chapter will celebrate 100 years
in 2018!
Although difficult to imagine,
the Columbus Chapter of the
American Guild of Organists
will celebrate its 100th birthday
in 2018. Mark Meuser has
appointed a committee to head
up the Centennial Celebration
activities. Members of the
committee are Albert Adcock,
Cynthia Adcock, Sally Casto,
Michael Hardesty, Carol Hofer,
Kevin Jones, Andrew
MacGregor, Mark Meuser and
Sara Seidel. The committee has
met once and will get together
again early in the new
year. Any Columbus Chapter
member who has ideas about
things for our Chapter to
consider during calendar 2018
should share them with Carol
Hofer at [email protected].
2018 will be a great year for all
of our members to remember!

Update on Mark Plescia
Many of you know that long-time AGO member Mark Plescia suffered a stroke last spring. His road to recovery has
been a long one, but he is doing much better. Though not back at the organ console yet, he reads many books, listens to
music, exercises, and eagerly chats with visitors. He also enjoys receiving mail.
If you would like to send Mark a card or letter, please address it to:
Mark Plescia / Genesis Rehab Center / 1155 Atwater Avenue / Circleville, OH 43113-1301
He can also be contacted by phone at the Rehab Center. That number is 740-477-1695.

News from the Lexington POE
We are excited to host the Pipe Organ Encounter for the Great Lakes region next
summer. As we’ve planned our POE week, we’ve taken seriously the task of
introducing The King of Instruments to the next generation of students. Our
chapter is eager to welcome them to Lexington next July. Though the new year
is just a few days underway, it’s not too early for middle and high school
students to begin filling out their summer schedules. We hope you’ll take a
moment and consider who you know that might benefit from attending a POE
and encourage them to register. Remember, they need not have any previous
organ experience. All pianists/organists ages 13-18 are welcome!
Check out our website at: www.lexingtonpoe2016.org. Additional brochures
can be downloaded there.
Many thanks,
Zach Klobnak (Lexington POE Director)

Annual Student Recital
The date for the Annual Student Recital is fast approaching. Students and/or
teachers are encouraged to sign up for this occasion by contacting Nancy
Renneckar at 614-848-8388 or [email protected].
In the recent past, the chapter has instituted the annual Pedal, Pipes, and Pizza,
the student recital, free chapter memberships for students, and student
scholarships for private lessons to promote more student organists and encourage
them in organ-related careers.
Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Upper Arlington, with a fine Schantz pipe
organ, is the location this year, and the time is 3:00 p.m. Practice time can be
arranged with Josh Brodbeck at Holy Trinity.
We also need a supportive audience for this recital. Please encourage your
friends and church members to attend. An offering for our scholarship fund will
be received, and refreshments will be served.
Come one, come all to Holy Trinity Lutheran on Sunday, April 17, at 3:00 p.m.
for this spectacular event!
