Our Friends from

BEHIND THE WALLSDear Inside Connection,

Hello, I hope this finds you all in good spirits. I have some wonderful news to share with you

guys. I was blessed with a parole date when I went to my parole hearing on March 05, 2015. It has

been 25 years and I am hoping now that the governor won't take it on review.

They were really impressed with all the step work I did and how I was sending it out to be

published (in The Inside Connection), and that I was truly giving back to the community that way.

They asked me about the application of the steps, and how I apply them to my life on a daily

bases. If you're a prisoner make sure that you have all that ironed out before you go to the board

so you can get a good outcome.

I was a drug addict and drug dealer for a lot of my life and for any of the prisoners reading

this newsletter I have advice for you: Make sure you have a very complete relapse prevention plan

written down on your drug addiction and show them how you will not use again. Be sure to list all

your triggers and stressors on it along with your coping skills you will use to make sure you will

not relapse. List all the meetings and your sponsor if you have one. Let them see that you have

thought of every possible scenario that could cause you to relapse and use. Having this in place

will go a long way to helping you become suitable for parole with the board. I also had to show how

my addiction escalated from user to becoming a criminal and all the insight that goes along with

it. You will have to be able to talk about it not just have a bunch of stuff written down for them to

read.

Keep the faith and I will hope to be back out there soon giving back to my fellow addicts and

to living the NA way and becoming a productive member of society.

Sincerely, Robert H.

Dear Inside Connection,

Hello. I just wanted to write to tell you I am getting out soon and to please take me off your

mailing list. Your newsletter has helped me feel close to home on this term and I thank you.

I won't be paroling to Sacramento. I am going to be paroling to San Luis Obispo to try to get

a fresh start. I have a halfway house called Gryphon Society that has reserved a bed for me.

So, thank you for sending me the newsletter all these years. It has helped me stay focused

and clean by showing me the light at the end of the tunnel.

Sincerely, Bill M.

Dear Inside Connection,

I bless you all in Jesus. Thank you for the Fellowship of Narcotics Anonymous. We, The

inmates here at CSP Solano Sat Night 7:30pm to 8:45pm, enjoy your fellowship in Dorm 6,

15 BLDG.

Lots from all over California talk of their hope and recovery in NA. Lots, like me, who have

never been to an NA meeting on the streets (only in prison), never knew what was out there for

those who parole. And lots of us are over-due lifers and looking forward to those meetings out

there. We look forward to meeting a lot of clean men/women sharing our recovery, our downfalls

and how through the 12 Steps and 12 Traditions, our sponsors and our Higher Power we have

stayed clean.

To all you folks out there—Love & Respect from all of us OVERDUE lifers.

I woke up one morning and went outside, and my shadow was BLACK. This seemed usual, but not always preferable.

Somebody hit me and my shadow became BLOOD RED. I put a bandage

on it, but it did not need a transfusion.I went camping and my

shadow became FOREST GREEN, and I felt pine cones and brush on it.

I looked up at the sky and my shadow turned BLUE WITH CLOUDS. My shadow

Later, I sun-bathed and my shadow appeared YELLOW. Sun rays omitted into me and all over from the sun-shadow and elsewhere.

I listened to some old Jimi Hendrix music and my shadow appeared PURPLE, but didn't test positive for drugs—Even though my shadow was staggering somewhat,

Step Four: paragraphs from The Basic Text“We made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.”"The purpose of a searching and fearless moral inventory is to sort through the confusion and the contradiction of our lives, so that we can fi nd out who we really are""Let’s face it; when we were using, we were not honest with ourselves. We are becoming honest with ourselves when we admit that addiction had defeated us and that we need help. It took a long time to admit that we were beaten. We found that we do not recover physically, mentally or spiritually overnight. Step Four will help us toward our recovery. Most of us fi nd that we were neither as terrible, nor as wonderful, as we supposed. We are surprised to fi nd that we have good points in our inventory. Anyone who has some time in the program and has worked this step will tell you that the fourth Step was a turning point in their life""In Step Four, we begin to get in touch with ourselves. We write about our liabilities such as guilt, shame, remorse, self-pity, anxiety, betrayal, hopelessness, failure, fear and denial""We write about the things that bother us here and now. We have a tendency to think negatively, so putting it on paper gives us a chance to look more positively at what is happening""The stress once trapped inside of us is released. Writing will lift the lid off of our pressure cooker. We decide whether we want to serve it up, put the lid back on it, or throw it out. We no longer have to stew in it"

Fourth Concept: paragraphs from A Guide to Local Services“Eff ective leadership is highly valued in Narcotics Anonymous. Leadership qualities should be carefully considered when selecting trusted servants.”

"Personal background and professional or educational qualifi cations, though helpful, do not necessarily make for eff ective leadership. When selecting trusted servants, after all, it is the whole person we trust, not just their skills. And one of the fi rst things we look for when selecting trusted servants is humility. Being asked to lead, to serve, to accept responsibility, is a humbling experience for a recovering addict. Through continuing to work the Twelve Steps, our trusted servants have come to know not only their assets but also their defects and their limitations. Knowing that, they have agreed to serve our fellowship to the best of their ability, with God’s help. Good NA leaders do not think they have to do everything themselves; they ask for help, advice, and direction on a regular basis. Our fellowship’s leaders ought not be dictators or order-givers; they are our servants. Able leadership in the spirit of service does not drive by arrogant mandate, demanding conformity; it leads by example, inviting respect. And nothing invites us to respect our trusted servants more than clear evidence of their humility"

Tradition Four: paragraphs from It Works How and Why“Each group should be autonomous, except in matters aff ecting other groups or NA as a whole.”

"NA is made up of a vastly diverse assortment of addicts joined together by the strength of their mutual commitment to recovery. We speak many diff erent languages and live in diff ering cultures; one type of meeting will not appeal to every addict who comes to Narcotics Anonymous. In order to reach every addict who may need our help and support, groups have the freedom to vary their format and other meeting

characteristics""As long as a group observes the Twelve Traditions and espouses the Twelve Steps of NA in its meetings,

it may consider them Narcotics Anonymous meetings""Since most groups are not directly connected with each other, we might think that whatever happens in our meetings has no eff ect on anyone else. When we consider who is aff ected by our group, we have to look at other groups, the addict yet to come, the newcomer, and the neighborhood in which we hold our

meetings""It’s also important to consider how we’re viewed by society... We help protect our reputation as a fellowship when we use our meeting facilities with respect, keeping them clean and in good repair. We should take care to act like good neighbors, conducting ourselves respectfully... If the public reputation of Narcotics

Anonymous is somehow impaired, addicts may die"

Have a nice day, Jim D.

You're invited to submit your story to the quarterly NA newsletter, Reaching Out. We are looking for the experience of NA members, like you, whose recovery has been enhanced by working with addicts who are seeking recovery behind the walls.

Tell us about your H&I service experience, past and present.

Why did you get involved with H&I?

How has H&I impacted your recovery?

Do you have a particular H&I experience you would like to share?

What is the one thing you would say to the addicts on the inside?

Thank you for sharing! Your experience with the NA program can inspire other addicts seeking fellowship and recovery.

Please send your story to: Narcotics Anonymous World Services

PO Box 9999 Van Nuys, CA 91409 or [email protected]
