Hello LWEA Members,

The year is already wrapping up, but there is still much going on at the LWEA.

The joint LWEA/Louisiana Conference on Water Supply, Sewerage, and Industrial Wastes (Louisiana Conference) is coming up. The conference will be held in Shreveport at the Shreveport Convention Center from March 10-14, 2013. Check out the program at http://www.louisianacon-ference.org. The LWEA is having a separate technical track for which we are accepting abstracts (see the attached call for abstracts).

The sequester cancelled our scheduled October meeting. Unfortunately our speaker was unable to access his presentation and was forced to re-schedule. The event has been rescheduled for November 21 at Ralph and Kackoo’s Restaurant (see attached announcement).

Christmas is less than six weeks away, incredibly. We will be having a Christmas gathering at the Bulldog in Baton Rouge (see attached an-nouncement). There is no cost associated with attending this event. The LWEA will provide appetizers and there will be a cash bar. Guests are wel-come. We only request that when you purchase beverages from the bar that you inform the bartender that you are with the LWEA gathering. There is no additional cost for you, but the collective bar tab of everyone present offsets LWEA’s cost.

The new website is up and running. If you have not done so, take a look at https://thelwea.com. We're still figuring out how everything works, so if you are having trouble, please let us know by emailing [email protected]. We are still working to resolve issues related to paying for registrations on the site and hope to have those issues resolved soon.

I look forward to seeing each of you at an LWEA event soon.

— Chad

Here are some photos from the WEF conference in Chicago. We met a ton of vendors and shakers and movers of the water and wastewater industry. Jerome Marshall and Clarence Monet were judges at the safety event. Alton Delarge and Sean Weber judged the lab event. Eric Neilson and Carlton Allen judged the collections event. The operations teams were friendly and helpful. We were invited to participate in other Challenge

Team state events. The Dallas Team put on the full court press for us to come to their event in April. I'd like to thank everyone for their support, and not to forget our unofficial coordinator of operations who keeps us in line, Julia Thomas. We will com-pete in 2014 at the convention center and are looking forward to seeing everyone there in October to cheer us on. — Jerome Marshall

LWEA Call For AbstractsLWEA CALL FOR ABSTRACTS FOR THE 2014 TECHNICAL CONFERENCE

The Louisiana Water Environment Association (LWEA)/ Louisiana Con-ference on Water Supply, Sewerage, and Industrial Waste (La Conference) is pleased to announce the Call for Abstracts for our 2014 Joint Spring Conference and Technical Program to be held March 10-14, 2014 at the Shreveport Convention Center in Shreveport, Louisiana.

LWEA/La Conference invites you to be a presenter or session moderator or to solicit associates, engineers, corpo-rate leaders, public officials, academia, consultants, or equipment and service representatives to do the same so that we can enhance our industry by sharing technical knowledge and experiences that continue growth. Abstracts are welcomed on any subject pertaining to water environment and environmen-tal health issues, though material in support of the conference theme will be given preference. We are specifically soliciting presentations in the following focus areas:› Current Environmental Events (all media: air, water, soil)› Wastewater Collection and Treatment › Water Treatment and Distribution› Watershed Management/Storm Water› Laboratory Practice and Regulations› Operations and Operator Training› Policy and Management› Coastal Management

Presentations in the following areas of interest are suggested: › Nutrients and Nutrient Removal› Industrial Wastewater› Stormwater/MS4 Issues› Collection Systems› Green Engineering and Technology› Regulatory Initiatives

› Case studies in wastewater collection, treatment, disposal, and management › Laboratory and sampling procedures for wastewater › Innovative permit compliance or enforcement solutions › Project management, training, and safety › Operational challenges and resolutions › Leading edge academic, industrial, and governmental research, both applied and fundamental, related to all aspects of the water environment › Wetlands Protection› Onsite Treatment Systems › Groundwater treatment and management› Redevelopment of Existing Facilities

Abstracts should be 500 words or less and we request that they be submit-ted in digital form through email to [email protected]. It is the submitter’s responsibility to assure that the abstract meets maximum length requirements and is written in a manner suitable for publication in the conference brochure. There is no limit to the number of abstracts that may be submitted by an individual, company, organization, or institution. Membership in LWEA is not a requirement for presentation.

Presentations should not exceed 30 minutes (25-minute presentation with 5 minutes for questions and answers), unless speakers coordinate with LWEA/ La Conference and LWEA/La Confer-ence determines a longer time slot is available. This can be discussed on a case by case basis. If a longer time slot is needed, please contact David Hawley at [email protected]. Speak-ers are expected to utilize PowerPoint to augment their presentation. One speaker per presentation will receive complimentary conference registration; however, speakers’ traveling and lodging expenses will not be reimbursed.

Note that the advertising of products or services is not permitted in this techni-cal forum; rather, booths in the confer-ence’s exposition hall are available for this purpose. Advances in technology, however, be it a project, method or product, are of great interest to attend-ees. Papers introducing new technology will be screened to ensure that technol-ogy (rather than product) is described and put into context with existing technologies. Questions in this regard should be directed to LWEA’s Technical Conference Chair for discussion during the preparation of your abstract.

Abstracts need to be submitted to [email protected] by Monday, January 20, 2014. Earlier submissions are most appreciated.

Please note that any abstracts submit-ted after the January 20 deadline will be considered for alternates or inclusion in the program only if an opening in the schedule is available.

If you are unable to present but have a topic that you would like to learn more about, we would appreciate your input. Please contact us so that potential pre-senters can be sought.

With your help, we can have the best technical program available in Louisiana for all environmental professionals.

In 2012, we featured the Dwyer Drainage Pump Station, West Closure Complex, Mandeville Wetlands, Munster WWTP and a Chemical Manufacturing Facility – all very successful and popular with our visitors.

If you are within 1 hour's drive from theNew Orleans Morial Convention Center and would like your facility featured, email Madeline Goddard, WEF liaison at [email protected]. — Madeline Goddard
