What is the purpose?

1. Show appreciation for the employer's interest in you.

2. Reiterate your interest in the position and in the organization.

3. Review or remind the employer about your qualifications for the position. If you thought of something you forgot to mention in the interview, mention it in your follow-up / thank-you letter.

4. Demonstrate that you have good manners and know to write a thank-you letter.

5. Follow up with any information the employer may have asked you to provide after the interview.

Part 1

Thank the interviewer for taking the time to meet with you (mention the date).

Remind him/her of the position for which you interviewed.

Part 2

Restate your interest in the position and the company/school/organization.

Mention something you learned from the interview or comment on something of importance that you discussed.

Emphasize your strengths, experiences, skills, accomplishments and slant them towards the points that the interviewer considered the most important for the position

Part 3

Once again, thank the interviewer for his/her time and consideration.

If appropriate, close with a suggestion for further action (if a second interview is a possibility), or mention that you will follow up with a phone call in a few days.
