  • About the Clinicians CHARLES SCHLUETER grew up in Du Quoin, Illinois. He started playing the trumpet at the age of ten and studied with Charles Archibald, Donald Lemasters, Melvin Siener, and Edward Brauer, before attending the Juilliard School, where his mentor was William Vacchiano, then principal trumpet of the New York Philharmonic. In 2006 Schlueter retired from the Boston Symphony Orchestra, where he had been principal trumpet for 25 years. This culminated a career of over 45 years of orchestral playing. Prior to joining the Boston Symphony he was principal trumpet in the Kansas City Philharmonic, Milwaukee Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra and associate principal in the Cleveland Orchestra. Mr Schlueter has enjoyed a long and distinguished career as a soloist, appearing both in recital and with orchestras in France, Brazil, Japan, as well as in the United States under directors such as Seiji Ozawa, Neville Marriner, Stanislaw Skrowaczewski, Kazuyoshi Akiyama, Ken-Ichiro Kobayashi, and Naohiro Totsuka. In addition to being on the faculty of the New England Conservatory since 1981, Mr Schlueter was a guest faculty member at the University of Connecticut in 2007 and 2008. He is in demand as a teacher both in the US and abroad and has held master classes in Europe, Canada, Japan, and South America. In 1988 Schlueter helped create the Northeastern Brazil Brass Master Classes in Joao Pessoa; this series was subsequently expanded to include other areas in Brazil. For several years beginning in 1995 Mr Schlueter was visiting professor at

Sakuyo University, in Kurashiki, Japan where in addition to teaching has given recitals with pianist Yasuo Watanabe and has appeared as soloist with the Universitys Wind Ensemble. Charles Schlueter can be heard on most Boston Symphony recordings made since 1981. Since 1994 he has made several solo recordings. The Charles Schlueter Foundation, Inc. was founded in 2001. It is a non-profit organization aimed at encouraging communication among brass players and to advancing the level of performance, teaching and literature associated with brass instruments.
