mean death. Mordecai’s response to Esther is informative even for us today (4:13b-14):

Do not think to yourself that in the king’s palace you will escape any more than all the other Jews. For if you keep silent at this time, relief and deliverance will rise for the Jews from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. And who knows whether you have not come to

the kingdom for such a time as this? (emphasis mine)”

If ever there was a

time that the

world needed to

hear the Good

News of Jesus

Christ, now is as

good as any

other. While its

author is not

definitively

known, the quote

“Preach the good

news, and if

necessary use

words,” offers the

admonishment

that we would be

a people of

prayerfully guided

direction. Would we find where God

is working and join Him there. I am

looking forward with great

expectation to the adventures of

2016 here at Poplar Tent, and pray to

see you beside me in the work of

God’s Kingdom.

y hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness. . . On Christ

the solid Rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand.”

We have just celebrated the birth of Christ, and now we peer into the New Year. What will it bring? If we read the news headlines that are filled with horrific stories of violence and hatred; murder and mayhem; natural disasters and wars; cultural and societal attacks that seem bent on the destruction of those things we hold dear, we might decide we’ll just stay in bed for 2016. But as Christians, can we really do that?

If with Reverend Mote, we can heartily declare that our hope is built on nothing less than Jesus Christ, then 2016 is a year pregnant with possibilities. In the story of Esther, when the plot to kill the Jews in the kingdom is revealed, Mordecai sends a request to her that she would “plead with (the king) on behalf of her people (4:8);” however, Queen Esther expresses her reluctance to do so since to approach the king without his summons would

"My Hope is Built on Nothing Less" by Edward Mote, 1797-1874

1. My hope is built on nothing less Than Jesus' blood and righteousness; I dare not trust the sweetest frame, But wholly lean on Jesus' name.

On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand.

2. When darkness veils His lovely face, I rest on His unchanging grace; In every high and stormy gale

My anchor holds within the veil. On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand.

3. His oath, His covenant, and blood Support me in the whelming flood; When every earthly prop gives way,

He then is all my Hope and Stay. On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand.

4. When He shall come with trumpet sound, Oh, may I then in Him be found,

Clothed in His righteousness alone, Faultless to stand before the throne! On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;

All other ground is sinking sand.

First Ministry

Opportunity for 2016

Our congregation will be hosting almost 100 youth and

adults from three churches in the Charleston Atlantic

Presbytery (First Presbyterian of Summerville, First

Scots Presbyterian, and First Presbyterian of Beaufort)

on Friday, January 15th. They will arrive Friday even-

ing, and will be working on some designated projects around

the church and community Saturday until lunchtime when they will leave for Great

Wolf Lodge. They will return to Poplar Tent Sunday morning to worship with us, and

we have offered to serve them lunch afterwards before they head back home.

They have extended an offer to our youth who would like to participate. That would

mean being part of the work crews, and then going to Great Wolf Lodge on a day pass

($20), and afterwards being a part of the evening activities.

We need:

Any middle school or high school youth who are interested in being a part of this

to let the church office know by Sunday, January 10th.

Anyone who might be willing to help with a spaghetti luncheon after church on the

17th, please contact

Marilyn Remsburg at

[email protected] or on her cell at (864)238-4033.

Please keep the young people and their adult leaders in your prayers. Thank you!

Blessings!

Clark

PTPW News

The Tent Peg 7

W hat a wonderful day it was, bright and sunny

with just a little nip in the air, when seven

Poplar Tent ladies and one guest departed for Ashe-

ville. We left on Sunday morning, December 6th.

Our drivers were Donna Bonds and Mike Smith who

took us to the Billy Graham Training Center at The

Cove for the Women’s Christmas Luncheon. In the

upper parking lot we were picked up by the Center’s

van and transported down the hill to the Center. Upon entering the large build-

ing we were in a huge welcome center decorated with many Christmas trees, a

nativity scene and a very big wreath which was hung over the roaring fireplace.

We were free to explore the building which had been Ruth Graham’s idea for a

place to display memorabilia from their many years in ministry, both in the

states and abroad. Along the walls were large glass front cabinets with gifts that

had been given to Mr. Graham. There were many different sizes of keys from so

may different places, pottery, clocks, hand crafted bowls, flags, and banners just

to mention a few of the items. Of special interest was a large pottery depiction

of the last supper. There were also numerous pictures of both Mr. and Mrs. Gra-

ham throughout their lifetime. We also visited Ruth’s Attic where you could buy

books, cards and many other things.

It was then time to get in line for the buffet lunch which consisted of turkey and

dressing, cranberry sauce, two different green salads, Waldorf salad, carrots and

asparagus, sweet potato casserole and bread pudding with caramel sauce. The

dining room was spacious and with four serving lines, things moved smoothly.

Immediately after lunch we went to the auditorium. There was a very talented

husband and wife pianist and singer who led us in several songs. The speaker

was Casey Schutrop from WOW Ministries International and the title of her

presentation was the Testimony of the Tree. There was a bare tree on the stage

and Ms. Schutrop decorated it with large Christmas balls entitled faith, patience,

good will, happiness and kindness. She then wrapped the tree in white garland.

All too soon, the event was over. The Cove is definitely a place to visit—more

than once—there is so much to see. There were ladies from ten different states,

one woman was from Iowa. There were a lot of churches missing some of their

ladies that Sunday. There must have ben at last 300 of us present.

We arrived home safely with renewed respect for the

work of Rev. and Mrs. Billy Graham.
