ABSTRACT

Pronunciation is the act of producing sound to make a conversation with others

and it is an important feature of learning to increase communication skills. It is an

important feature of learning to increase communication skills because the success of

communication depends on the speakers' fluency in pronunciation. This study aims to

investigate the student’s techniques, the problems, and the solution in improving

pronunciation. The study used a mixed-method which collected the data from survey

questionnaires and interviews. The respondents were the English Department students

of University Muhammadiyah Malang, the academic year 2017. 63 students have

completed the questionnaire and 6 students were sampled randomly to participate in

interviews. Based on the findings, there are 3 results in this study. First, the students

mostly watch a pure English movie to improve pronunciation without subtitles to

improve pronunciation, the students got confused with some unfamiliar at the

beginning then get used to it while the words are repeating along in the movie. Second,

the student is still confused with some vocabularies that unfamiliar is the most

problems that occur while improving pronunciation, it was the factor in improving

pronunciation to be not running well. Third, finding a definition of the word that they

do not know is the most solution the solved, the student’s improving pronunciation

could be running well when they got familiar with the word later. This research was

different from other research by summarized the techniques and the problem solutions

based on the learner’s experience. Suggestion, the learners would be able to use this

research to be a reference in improving pronunciation skills.
