Dear Members of the FITA Family,

As the President of FITA, I am happy that we have suc-cessfully completed our first two years of activity. As you know, before the last Congress we had presented

a detailed program for the future of FITA and, as the FITA Management, we really worked very hard to accomplish the FITA goals. Most of the program items have been completed successfully on behalf of archery.

Now, our Strategic Plan for 2007 – 2012 is ready for your approval. As you know, this World Plan was prepared with the input, comments, suggestions, and recommendations of our national and continental associations and FITA Commit-tees. Briefly, these are your ideas and recommendations. In the preparation of this plan, we were all working together as a team. Teamwork is an essential part of the way FITA does business. We have a very good partner in the preparation of the FITA World Plan—TSE consulting. On behalf of FITA, I would like to thank TSE Consulting and its director, Mr. Lars Haue-Pedersen, and his associate, Ms. Caroline Anderson, for their invaluable contributions.

Now, we have a new Congress in Leipzig just ahead. I believe that FITA Congress will make some important new decisions for the betterment of archery. Meanwhile, a new logo—which was selected through a design contest for the World Cup Project—will be offered to Congress for approval. I believe that this new logo will be more contemporary and dynamic and in line with the IOC expectations of graphic designs for International Federations.

As the President of FITA, I look forward to the future with great anticipation to the valuable work that will be accom-plished by Congress, our new Council, our new Committees, our FITA Staff, and of course our National and Continental Member Associations—in other words, you and the organiza-tions you represent.

En tant que Président de la FITA, je suis content que nous ayons connu beaucoup de succès lors des deux premiè-res années d’activités. Comme vous le savez, avant le

dernier Congrès nous avions présenté un programme dé-taillé pour le futur de la FITA. Depuis, le management de la FITA a travaillé très dur pour accomplir les buts de la FITA et la plupart des points au progamme ont été remplis avec succès pour le bien du tir l’arc.

Maintenant, notre Plan Stratégique pour 2007—2012 est prêt pour votre approbation. Comme vous le savez, ce Plan Mondial a été préparé avec les apports, commentaires, sug-gestions et recommendations de nos Associations Nationa-les et Continentales et des Comités de la FITA. En fait, ce sont vos idées et recommendations. En préparant ce plan, nous avons tous travaillé ensemble. Le travail en équipe est essentiel dans la manière de faire de la FITA. Nous avons aussi eu un très bon partenaire dans la préparation de ce Plan Mondial; TSE consulting. Au nom de la FITA, j’aimerais remercier TSE Consulting, son directeur M. Lars Haue-Pe-dersen et Mme Caroline Anderson pour leur contribution inestimable.

Maintenant, nous avons le Congrès de Leipzig juste de-vant nous. Je pense que ce Congrès FITA prendra des déci-sions importantes pour l’amélioration du tir à l’arc. De plus, un nouveau logo, qui a été sélectionné lors d’un concours de design dans le cadre de la Coupe du Monde, sera proposé au Congrès pour approbation. Je crois que ce nouveau logo apportera une ligne graphique contemporaine, dynamique et en adéquation avec les attentes du CIO pour les sports olympiques.

En tant que Président de la FITA, je me réjouis amplement du futur et du travail de grande valeur qui sera accompli par le Congrès, le nouveau Conseil, les nouveaux Comités, les employés de la FITA et bien sûr nos Associations Nationa-les et Continentales. En d’autres termes, je me réjouis des projets que nous ferons ensemble, avec vous et les organi-sations que vous représentez.

Dear Friends in the Archery Family,The 2007 season is already well advanced and, so far, we have seen many new countries

move into the spotlight. This is very positive and proves that FITA’s development programs are working. This also means that some of the

countries that have been in the spotlight will have to work even harder to stay on the

top. One thing is for sure and that is that our sport is becoming more and more

professional at all levels. Professional-ism doesn’t neces-sarily mean that you

get paid for what you do—it is an attitude towards

what you do. A volunteer can be a professional and a paid staff member can be an amateur.

With the introduction of the Meteksan Ar-chery World Cup in 2006, the archery scene has changed—FITA has set into motion chang-

es that cannot be stopped. We now have sponsors, good TV distribution and prize money for the archers. Archers com-peting on the circuit have to perform in competition every month at a high level from April to September. I am now mentioning only the outdoor target season, not including indoor or field. This means that certain archers, who are not yet professional, will have to make decisions about whether they want to become part-time or full-time archers. These are tough choices to make since the archery world is not yet at the level of tennis, golf, table tennis or other sports with a pro-tour, and a pro-tour is what we are moving toward. This will also change how Member Associations will work with archers; and there are some important decisions to be made at the national level.

ver sous les projecteurs. Cela est très positif et prouve que les programmes de développement de la FITA fonctionnent bien. Cela signifie aussi que certains des pays qui ont été dans le spotlight vont devoir travailler encore plus dur pour rester au sommet. Une chose est sûre, notre sport devient de plus en plus professionnel à tous les niveaux. Le pro-fessionnalisme ne signifie pas nécessairement que l’on soit payé pour ce que l’on fait, mais exige une certaine attitude dans ce que l’on fait. Un bénévole peut être professionnel, et un salarié travailler en amateur.

Avec l’introduction de la Coupe du Monde Meteksan de Tir à l’Arc en 2006, la scène du tir à l’arc a changé, et la FITA a initié un mouvement qui ne peut pas être arrêté. Nous avons maintenant des sponsors, une bonne diffusion à la télévision et des prix en espèces pour les archers. Les archers présents sur le circuit doivent être performants chaque mois lors des compétitions de haut niveau entre avril et septembre. Je ne mentionne ici que la saison de tir extérieur, à l’exclusion du tir en salle ou en campagne. Cela signifie que certains archers qui ne sont pas encore profes-sionnels devront décider s’ils veulent devenir des archers à plein temps ou non. C’est un choix difficile, étant donné que le monde du tir à l’arc n’est pas encore au niveau du tennis, du golf, du tennis de table ou d’autres sports qui ont un circuit professionnel. Nous nous rapprochons justement d’un tel circuit professionnel. Cela va provoquer des chan-gements également dans la manière de travailler des asso-ciations membres avec les archers, et il y a des décisions importantes à prendre au niveau national.

L’équipe du management de la FITA va aller au Congrès avec un plan stratégique pour l’avenir. C’est extrêmement important pour le futur de notre sport. Certains choix de-vront être faits, et cela signifie que certaines choses ne

FITA management will go to Congress with a strategic plan for the future. This is critical for what will happen with our sport. Certain choices will have to be made; and making those choices will mean that certain things will no longer be done the same way. This is positive in many cases but it could also be negative. What we all have to keep in the back of our minds is—what is the key goal for our sport. Based on the input received, we propose as our vision—to become an Internationally Recognised Important Olympic Sport by 2012.

Why?First of all, this is not currently the case. If you ask a man or woman on the street to name some important Olympic Sports, I doubt that archery would be quoted in the first 10, unless he or she is an archer, or you are asking the question in Korea, El Salvador or Bhutan.

Does this mean that archery can be more important than swimming, football or athletics? No. We have to be realistic that some sports, because of popularity and histor-ical reasons, will always be bigger than Archery. However, in many holiday resorts, archery is the most practised sport and that is something we can build on.

So what is it all about? When the IOC, or similar bodies for regional or other multi-sport games, have to make a de-cision on the programme, they automatically add archery to it because it is an added value that is important for the suc-cess of such games. Equally as important, the same should apply to broadcasters and sponsors.

What is in it for the archers and the Member Associ-ations? We all know that Olympic status is critical for fund-ing. If you have friends who practice softball or baseball, ask them what is their biggest issue at the moment in most of their countries.

So, is this plan only for the Olympics? On the con-trary, the plan will have very little to do with the Olympics.

Pourquoi?Tout d’abord, cela n’est pas le cas actuellement. Si vous deman-dez à un homme ou une femme dans la rue de citer des sports olympiques importants, je doute fort que le tir à l’arc soit cité dans les 10 premiers, sauf s’il s’agit d’un tireur, ou que vous menez votre enquête en Corée, au Salvador ou au Bhoutan.

Cela signifie-t-il que notre sport sera plus impor-tant que la natation, le football ou l’athlétisme? Non. Nous devons être conscients que certains sports, grâce à leur popularité et pour des raisons historiques, seront toujours plus importants que le tir à l’arc. Néanmoins, dans beaucoup de complexes de vacances, le tir à l’arc est le sport le plus pratiqué. C’est quelque chose que nous devons exploiter.

Alors de quoi s’agit-il? Quand le CIO ou des organes si-milaires de jeux régionaux ou d’autres jeux comprenant plu-sieurs sports doivent décider d’un programme, ils devraient ajouter automatiquement le tir à l’arc, parce que nous re-présentons une valeur ajoutée importante pour le succès de ces jeux. Plus important encore, la même chose devrait valoir pour les chaînes de télévision et les sponsors.

Quel avantage y a-t-il pour les archers et les Asso-ciations Membres? Nous savons tous que le statut de sport olympique est indispensable pour trouver des fonds. Si vous avez des amis qui pratiquent le softball ou le baseball, de-mandez-leur quelle est leur plus grande préoccupation pour le moment dans la plupart des pays.

Alors ce plan concerne seulement les Jeux Olympi-ques? Au contraire.

If we look at the evaluation made by the IOC, we see that few things that were negative are directly linked to the Olympics. However, it does mean we have to bring our other events and activities to Olympic level. We need to improve the quality and branding of our sport at all levels.

One of the issues to be resolved is the confusing image of recurve and compound. Independently, both are excel-lent disciplines but, when we combine them at an event, we get confusion. The man or woman on the street will not see the difference and will ask why there are two gold medals given since the archers do exactly the same thing.

They play: the same type of match; with the same number of arrows; at the same distance; during the same time frame; at the same size and type of target; with similar equipment.

So, why do we give two medals and why is this a problem? It devalues both disciplines by dispersing the focus. And, by the way, this is a key reason why we can’t have compound as well in the Olympics. We are already working with some of our compound archers to see what is possible, and when we come to the 2009 Congress, we will have a fully tested proposal. Will this change our compound discipline? Yes. Will this change recurve? Probably yes, but only minor changes since recurve archery is already a good product and just needs some fine-tuning.

In conclusion, since the start of the Meteksan Archery World Cup last year, many things have changed. The entire FITA event team works on a daily basis to improve the qual-ity and branding of the events. So far, we are moving in the right direction. Have we made mistakes? Yes, but you learn more from mistakes than from success. Why do we do this? For one and only one reason, OUR ARCHERS.

Le projet aura peu affaire aux Jeux Olympiques. Si nous observons l’évaluation faite par le CIO, nous voyons que de très petits aspects négatifs sont directement liés aux Jeux Olympiques. Ainsi, cela signifie que nous devons amener nos autres compétitions et activités au niveau olympique. Nous devons améliorer la qualité et l’image de marque de notre sport à tous les niveaux.

Une des questions à résoudre sera l’image contradic-toire de l’arc classique et de l’arc à poulies. Ce sont deux ex-cellentes disciplines, mais en les combinant lors d’une com-pétition nous créons une confusion. La femme ou l’homme de la rue ne verront pas de différence et se demanderont pourquoi on décerne deux médailles d’or puisque les ar-chers font exactement la même chose.

Ils tirent: dans le même type de matches; avec le même nombre de flèches; à la même distance; dans la même limite de temps; sur une cible de même taille et de même type; avec un équipement semblable.

Alors pourquoi décerner deux médailles, et pourquoi est-ce un problème ? Cela diminue l’intérêt des deux dis-ciplines en dispersant l’attention. D’ailleurs, c’est une des principales raisons pour lesquelles l’arc à poulies n’est pas au programme des Jeux Olympiques. Nous travaillons déjà avec certains de nos tireurs d’arc à poulies pour voir ce que nous pouvons faire, et, quand nous irons au congrès en 2009, nous aurons une proposition de solution déjà testée. Cela changera-t-il notre discipline de l’arc à poulies ? Oui. Cela changera-t-il l’arc classique ? Probablement que oui, mais dans une moindre mesure, car le tir à l’arc classique est déjà un bon produit et ne demande que des réglages subtils.

Pour conclure, depuis le début de la Coupe du Monde Meteksan de Tir à l’Arc l’année passée, beaucoup de choses ont changé, et l’équipe entière chargée de l’organisation d’événements de la FITA travaille chaque jour pour amélio-rer la qualité et l’image de marque des événements. Pour le moment nous allons dans la bonne direction. Avons-nous fait des erreurs ? Oui, mais on apprend plus de ses erreurs que de ses réussites. Pourquoi faisons-nous tout cela ? Pour une seule et bonne raison, NOS ARCHERS.

These World Championships will be a showcase, not just for our country and the organisation of this event, not just for the German Shooting and Archery Federation,

but also for the sport of archery itself. Leipzig 2007 is not just the World Championships; it’s also the chance to qualify for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. That means that, with few exceptions, all nations will be battling for the coveted ‘Olympic tickets’ in Saxony, which of course means that we will see sporting performances of the highest order.

In the 7th–9th century the first Slavic settlement appeared near the confluence of the rivers Elster and Parthe. First mention of “urbs Libzi” was in the Chronicle’s of Bishop Thietmar von Merseburg in the year 1015; and around 1165, Margrave Otto the Rich grants Leipzig its city charter and market rights.

Leipzig is the hometown of Johann Sebastian Bach. The famous composer was Leipzig’s musical director—director ‘musices lipsiensis’—and choirmaster of the St. Thomas’ Boys Choir between 1723 and 1750. The city has dedicated itself to maintaining Bach’s heritage with the Bach Archives, the Bach Museum, the St. Thomas’ Boys Choir, and the Ge-wandhaus Orchestra.

Leipzig was the starting point for the events which led to the Peaceful Revolution of 1989. You can visit the original locations of St Nicholas’s Church, where after the Prayers for Peace were said, the demonstrations started along Au-gustusplatz and the central ring road to the headquarters of the secret police (Stasi), part of which has been incorpo-rated into the Museum in the “Round Corner.”

The Leipzig Fair is also known as the “mother of all trade fairs” and opened its new exhibition centre in 1996. In 1997, the trade fair celebrated the 500th anniversary of being granted the “Imperial Right to Hold Trade Fairs.” The slogan of the Leipzig Fair: “Trade Fairs Made-to-Measure.”

Tir et de Tir à l’Arc, mais aussi pour le tir à l’arc. Leipzig 2007 n’est pas qu’un Championnat du Monde; c’est aussi l’occa-sion de se qualifier pour les Jeux Olympiques de 2008 à Pékin. Both Senyuk (UKR) in Recurve Junior Men and Kuula (RUS) in Recurve Junior Women won both the individual and team titles. Abidduev (RUS) won in Compound Junior Men and Anastasio (ITA) won in Compound Junior Women.

The Indoor World Championships in Izmir gave many Ju-niors a chance to make their dreams come true—becom-ing a World Champion.

Recurve Junior Men IndividualThe Bronze Medal match was between Tedford (USA) and Belov (RUS). Tedford took the lead from the start and kept a two-point lead after each end. He finally won the Bronze Medal with a score of 117–115.

Same story for the gold Medal match between Shakirov (RUS) and Senyuk (UKR) — Senyuk took a two-point advan-tage after the first end over Shakirov. The two-point dif-ference continued until the last end, and Senyuk won over Shakirov with a great score of 118–116.

Senyuk (UKR) en Junior Garçons Classique et Kuula (RUS) en Junior Filles Classique ont tous deux gagné les titres individuels et par équipes. Abidduev (RUS) a gagné en Junior Garçons Poulies et Anastasio en Junior Filles Poulies.

Les juniors avaient une chance unique de réaliser un rêve à Izmir: devenir Champions du Monde.

Two double World Champions in Juniors! Deux Doubles Champions du Monde en Salle!

Junior Filles ClassiqueLa bataille pour le bronze était donc entre Benatti (ITA) et Fedorova (RUS). Le match a commencé par une première volée parfaite de la part de la Russe, menant par deux points sur l’Italienne. Fedorova a continué à mener de façon constante jusqu’à la fin de la troisième volée. La Russe a fi-nalement remporté le match 117–113 et a ramené la médaille de bronze dans sa valise.

La lutte pour l’or était entre une autre Russe, Kuular, et l’Ukrainienne Veselovska. La Russe a pris un léger avantage dès le début du match, et a creusé l’écart pour finalement l’emporter sur Veselovska 114–109.

Junior Garçons PouliesLe match de médaille de bronze a été tiré entre Wickliffe (USA) et van Huffel (FRA). Van Huffel a légèrement mené le match dès le début (28–29, 56–58, 84–86) pour finalement remporter le bronze 113–115.

Le match de médaille d’or a été joué entre Marbacher (SUI) et Abidduev (RUS). Le Russe a pris un léger avantage dès la première volée, avec un point de plus. Cette diffé-rence de score a continué de façon constante dans les vo-lées suivantes, et a même augmenté de 1 point. Le score final était de 112–110 en faveur de Abidduev, qui a emmené l’or à la maison ! Marbacher est bien sur récompensé avec l’argent pour sa bonne performance et un record d’Europe (118 points en quart de finale).

Junior Filles PouliesLa bataille pour le bronze entre Christensen (USA) et Mo-zhaykina (RUS) fut plein de suspens. Dans les deux premiers ends la Russe menait d’un point mais l’Américaine a pro-gressivement renversé la vapeur pour s’imposer 114–112!

Compound Junior Men IndividualThe bronze medal match was shot between Wickliffe (USA) and Van Huffel (FRA). Van Huffel held a slight lead from the beginning (28–29, 56–58, 84–86) and earned the bronze 113–115.

The gold medal match featured Marbacher (SUI) and Abidduev (RUS). The Russian took the advantage in the first end, with a one-point difference, and maintained his lead throughout the match. After gaining another point for a two-point lead, the final score was 112–110 in favour of Abid-duev. Marbacher was happy with his silver medal and a new European record (118 points in quarter-final).

Compound Junior Women IndividualThe bronze medal match between Christensen (USA) and Mo-zhaykina (RUS) had a lot of suspense. In the first two ends, the Russian was leading by one point, but the American got her act together to take the lead over the Russian by two points in the last two ends and won the match 114–112!

The gold medal match between Anastasio (ITA) and Ioan-nou (GRE) featured two truly great talents! Ioannou led in the first end by a single point, but Anastasio managed to tie the score in the second end 55–55. The Italian then took the advantage in the third end by one point over the Greek who lost the match In the fourth end by four points: 110–114.


Recurve Junior Men TeamThe Bronze Medal match was shot between Norway and Po-land. This match was quite interesting, since the Norwegians were loosing in the first two ends by five points! Suddenly, they got their act together to shoot some good scores and lowered the gap by two points. Unfortunately for them, their efforts were not enough to bring the bronze medal home; they lost by three points 227–224. Bronze goes to Poland!

Italy took on Ukraine for gold. The Italian team began the match with a lead of 29–27 in the first end, but the Ukrainian team took the advantage over the Italians in the second end. They increased the score difference end after end and de-feated the Italians 233–223.

Recurve Junior Women TeamThe bronze medal match again featured Poland and Italy. Poland held a slight lead in the first two ends of the match and by the third end the difference was considerable. Po-land won the bronze medal 226–208.

Turkey shot against Russia for gold. The Turkish team was welcomed with loud cheers from the local fans to begin the match. However, the first arrow shot by the Turkish girls was a seven. The Russians took the lead in the first end. Al-though the Turkish team tried hard to come back (one point difference in the third end), they were not successful. The score difference continued to increase end after end and they finally lost the match with a nine-point difference in favour of Russia.

Le match pour la médaille d’or entre Anastasio (ITA) et Iaonnou (GRE) a aussi tenu son lot de promesses. Iaonnou a pris la tête d’un point après trois flèches mais Anastasio est revenue à 55–55 à la « mi-temps ». L’Italienne a par la suite réussi un superbe 59 pour un total de 114 alors que la Grecque en est restée à 55 points lors de ses six dernières flèches. L’or pour Anastasio 114 à 110!

Juniors Garçons Classique par EquipeLa Pologne et la Norvège se sont qualifiées pour le match de la médaille de bronze. Les Norvégiens ont ensuite mal com-mencé ce match en perdant de 5 points à mi-match. Ils sont revenus à 2 points pour finalement perdre 224–227 face à la Pologne.

L’Italie affrontait l’Ukraine pour l’or. L’Italie menait 29–27 au début match, mais les favoris Ukrainiens ont renversé la vapeur dès la deuxième volée. Ils ont tiré de façon brillante jusqu’au final: 233–223. Or pour l’Ukraine!

Juniors Filles Classique par EquipeAprès une demi-finale très accrochée contra la Turquie et perdue de justesse, les Italiennes se sont par contre écrou-lées pour le bronze devant les Polonaises: 208–226.

Les Turques ont dû savourer leur match pour la médaille d’or dans une superbe salle, spécialement aménagée pour toutes les finales avec les fans et la TV turque! Cela n’a mal-heureusement pas suffit pour battre des Russes irrésisti-bles et qui ont gagné par 9 points. Or pour la Russie!

Compound Junior Men TeamThe bronze medal match was between Russia and France. This was an exciting and tight match from the beginning, with a score of 57–58, France, after the first end. The French team then managed to increase the score difference, win-ning the bronze medal with the score of 227–231.

In the battle for gold between the USA and Italy, the first end was tied 28–28, but the US Team managed to increase their lead in the following ends. The score after 12 arrows was 114–111. The Americans also led the second set of 12 arrows to defeat the Italians 229–223 and take home the gold!

Compound Junior Women TeamThe bronze medal featured once again the home nation, Tur-key, and Great Britain. Great Britain dominated the match and won 222–196.

Juniors Garçons Poulies par EquipeLa France jouait contre la Russie pour le bronze. Le début du match était très serré car après six flèches chacun, le score affichait 58–57. La France a néanmoins pu progressivement augmenter l’écart pour gagner le bronze par 231–227.

Les Américains n’ont pas tremblé contre l’Italie en finale malgré un début de match serré : 28–28 après trois flèches, 114–111 après 12 envois pour un finir sur un 229–223. L’or pour les USA !

Juniors Filles Poulies par EquipeLa Grande Bretagne affrontait une nouvelle fois la nation hôte, la Turquie, pour la médaille de bronze. Les Britanni-ques ont dominé le match pour s’imposer 222–196.

Le match pour la médaille d’or fut plus serré entre les USA et la Russie. Les Russes ont pris un léger avantage de 2

Rohrberg (GER) in Recurve Men, Hayakawa (JPN) in Recurve Women, Gellenthien in Compound Men (USA), and Salvi (ITA) in Compound Women are the new Indoor World Champions! Team gold medals were won by Italy, France and USA, twice!

The perfect organization of the Indoor World Champion-ships in Izmir (TUR) from March 13–17, was really appre-ciated by all the archers and officials who went to the

competition.The individual matches are played with 12 arrows only

(max. 120 points). The archers shoot 4x3 arrows in semi-finals, bronze and gold medal matches.

Recurve Men IndividualThe exciting matches shot by the Olympic Champion Gali-azzo (ITA) were an example of the great competition in Izmir. He didn’t shoot a match under 118 points out of 120 the whole week and yet ended up in 4th place. He met the rock solid Rohrberg (GER) in the semi. They were tied at 90 points after nine arrows, but Galiazzo could not keep up the perfect shooting until the end. The German shot a perfect 120 score to reach the final. In the other semi, Ivashko (UKR) moved into the final match by defeating Rice (USA), 119–113.

Galiazzo and Rice offered another great match for the bronze medal. They were both tied until the last arrow—

Arc Classique Hommes Un signe que la compétition était de haut niveau a été donné par le champion olympique Galiazzo (ITA). Il n’a pas tiré un seul match en dessous de 118 points sur 120 de toute la semaine et a fini à la 4e place. Il est juste tombé contre un Rohrberg (GER) en état de grâce en demi-finale. L’Allemand a tiré un 120 parfait pour atteindre la finale. Les deux concurrents étaient à égalité à 90 points après 9 flè-ches, mais Galiazzo n’a pas tenu jusqu’au bout. Dans l’autre demi, Ivashko (UKR) a rejoint la finale en battant Rice (USA), 119–113.

First-time Japanese and German Indoor World Champions in Izmir!

Rohrberg (GER) avait précédemment perdu sa finale par équipes mais il a bien commencé celle-ci avec un score parfait de 30. Ivashko (UKR) a débuté avec 28 points. Ro-hrberg a continué en tirant un 60 parfait, alors qu’Ivashko atteignait 57 points. Dans la 3ème volée, Ivashko a tiré un 30, mais Rohrberg s’est accroché avec 29 points. Le score était de 89–87. Ivashko a réussi un autre 29 pour conclure, mais l’Allemand a gagné l’or, 118–116 points!

Quel cadeau somptueux pour son anniversaire, un peu plus tôt cette semaine! Et quelle façon de promouvoir les Championnats du Monde Extérieur à Leipzig, en Allemagne, à la mi-juillet.

Arc Classique Dames Les deux demi-finales étaient très serrées. Hayakawa (JPN) et Dorokhova (UKR) étaient à égalité à 84 points après 9 flèches, mais la Japonaise a fini avec un 29 pour gagner le match 113–111 points. Dans la deuxième demi-finale, Folkard (GBR) menait 85–83 après 9 flèches, mais n’a pas réussi à garder son avantage jusqu’à la fin. Les 25 points réalisés par Folkard avec ses trois dernières flèches étaient une vraie porte ouverte pour Schuh (FRA). La Française a marqué 29 et a remporté une place dans la finale pour l’or avec 112–110 points.

Folkard n’a probablement pas su passer au-dessus de sa déception pour le match de bronze. Une autre mauvaise volée l’a mise en retrait (87–82 points) contre Dorokhova, qui a remporté le bronze, 115–112 points. Voilà une autre médaille pour l’Ukrainienne après sa médaille d’argent à Aalborg en 2005.

En finale, Hayakawa (JPN) a pris l’avantage sur la championne du monde 2003, Schuh (FRA). Un début assez moyen de la part de la Française a donné deux points d’avantage à la Japonaise après trois flèches (28–26). Schuh a par la suite repris un point. Haya-

kawa a géré cette marge d’un point après 9 flèches: 84–83. Le suspense est resté

jusqu’à la toute dernière flèche, mais le 9 de Schuh n’a pas suffi à égaliser le 10

Rohrberg continued, reaching a perfect 60, while Ivashko reached 57 points. In the third end, Ivashko shot a perfect 30, but Rohrberg held on with 29 points for a score of 89–87. Ivashko shot another 29 and Rohrberg matched his score—winning the gold for Germany, 118–116!

What a present for his birthday which was earlier that week! What a way to promote the Outdoor World Champion-ships in Leipzig, Germany, mid-July.

Recurve Women IndividualBoth semi-finals were really close. Hayakawa (JPN) and Dor-okhova (UKR) were tied at 84 points after nine arrows, but the Japanese archer finished with a strong 29 to clinch the match 113–111.

In the second semi-final, Folkard (GBR) was leading 85–83 after nine arrows, but didn’t manage to keep her shooting solid until the end. The 25 points of Folkard in her last three arrows were a clear open door for Schuh (FRA), who scored 29 and clinched a place in the final with 112–110.

Possibly, the British archer could not get over her dis-appointment because in the bronze medal match, a bad end put her behind (87–82). Dorokhova earned the bronze, 115–112—another medal for the Ukrainian, who won silver in Aalborg 2005.

Champion, Schuh, for the gold. A slow start from the French archer gave a two-point lead to the Japanese woman after three arrows (28–26). Schuh came back to a one-point defi-cit at half-match. Hayakawa managed to keep this one point margin after nine arrows: 84–83. The suspense remained until the very last arrow, but Schuh’s 9 was unable to match Hayakawa’s 10, winning the first gold medal for Japan at an Indoor World Championships!

Compound Men IndividualThe young American, Gellenthien was solid in the semi-final against the experienced Genet (FRA). The US representative started with a 60 (after six arrows), while Genet dropped two points in his first three arrows. Despite a strong finish, Genet could not come back: 118–117 for Gellenthien. In the second semi, number 15th seed Duo (ESP) was on a roll. He was trailing Dutchman Elzinga by one point after six arrows but the third end was the turning point. Duo scored 30, Elz-inga 28. The last three arrows could not change the match and Duo won 117–116.

The bronze medal was shot between two of the very top archers of last year’s World Cup, Genet and Elzinga. Neither archer wanted to lose ground: 58–58 after six arrows, then 87–87 and then 116–116. They had to go to a sudden-death shoot-off—one arrow each, best score wins. They both shot a 10 so they had to shoot a second arrow. This time Genet was perfect and clinched the bronze (10–9).

In the final, Gellenthien had another strong start with a perfect 30, compared to Duo’s 27. The American then con-trolled the rest of the match and finished at 116–114.

Gellenthien, who won the World University Champion-ships in Slovakia last year, is the new Indoor World Cham-pion!

Compound Women IndividualExperience prevailed in the women’s semis. Salvi (ITA) dom-inated teammate Galletti (ITA) 119–114. The second semi was tighter. Agudo (ESP) met the crowd favourite Atici (TUR). They were tied at 58 points and then at 114 points. However, Agudo did not lose her nerve in the shoot-off, scoring a 10 against the 9 of Atici.

The bronze medal match was tense as well. Galletti gained a small advantage after six arrows (57–56) and bare-ly held it until the end: 115–114. Nevertheless, Atici deserved the cheering of the home fans in this close match!

The two experienced archers, Salvi (ITA) and Agudo (ESP) started with 29 points each. A couple of very close calls by the judges took place in the second end, with both archers

Les trois dernières flèches n’ont pas pu changer le cours du match, et Duo a gagné 117–116 points.

La médaille de bronze a été disputée par deux des meilleurs archers de la Coupe du Monde 2006, Genet et Elzinga. Ils ne voulaient pas lâcher prise : 58–58 après 6 flèches, ensuite 87–87 et 116–116 points. Ils ont dû aller à un barrage en mort subite. Une flèche chacun, le meilleur

scoring 57 points. Salvi then continued with a perfect 30, while Agudo only shot 28 (87–85). The Italian fans were go-ing crazy! Another perfect 30 from Salvi proved too much for Agudo. Salvi won 117–113!

Recurve Men TeamThe bronze medal match in this category was one of the closest ever in Indoor! Japan and USA were neck and neck: 58–57, 117–116, 174–174, and 231–231. They had to shoot a tie-breaker—each team shooting three arrows (one per team member), a maximum of three times. After the first three arrows, the teams were tied. After the second three arrows, the teams were still tied. On the third tiebreaker of three arrows, both teams shot a perfect score of 30 points! It was then the arrow closest to the centre that decided the winner and Wunderle’s arrow gave the bronze medal to the USA! The Japanese also deserve congratulations for their superb championships.

En finale, Gellenthien (USA) a de nouveau pris un ex-cellent départ avec un score parfait de 30, comparé à Duo (ESP), 27 points. L’Américain a ensuite mené 59–55 points et 88–84 points. Il n’a pas tremblé jusqu’à la dernière volée et a remporté l’or 116–114 points!

Gellenthien (USA) avait gagné les Championnats du Mon-de Universitaires en Slovaquie l’année dernière.

Arc à Poulies Dames L’expérience a prédominé dans les demi-finales féminines. Salvi (ITA) a dominé sa coéquipière Galletti (ITA) 119–114 points. La deuxième demi-finale était plus serrée. Agudo (ESP) rencontrait la favorite de la foule, Atici (TUR). Elles étaient à égalité à 58 points et ensuite à 114 points. Cepen-dant, Agudo a gardé son sang-froid dans le barrage, en mar-quant un 10 contre un 9 pour Atici.

Le match pour la médaille de bronze était assez tendu aussi. Galletti avait un léger avantage après 6 flèches (57–56) et a pu le maintenir jusqu’à la fin: 115–114 points. Néan-moins, Atici a mérité les encouragements des fans locaux!

Les expérimentées Salvi (ITA) et Agudo (ESP) ont com-mencé la finale avec 29 points chacune. Les arbitres ont dû effectuer quelques jugements de flèches dans la deuxième volée, mais les deux archères ont atteint 57 points. Salvi a ensuite continué avec un score parfait (30), alors qu’Agudo n’a réussi que 28 points (87–85). Les fans italiens ont mis de l’ambiance! Agudo n’a pas pu rattraper un autre 30 de la part de Salvi. Salvi gagne 117–113 points!

Arc Classique Hommes par équipesLe match pour la médaille de bronze était l’un des plus serrés de l’histoire de la compétition en salle! Les équipes tirent 4x6 flèches et présentent trois archers en alternance. Le Japon et les USA étaient coude à coude : 58–57, 117–116, 174–174, et 231–231 points. Idem après les trois deuxièmes flèches. Sur la troisième prolongation de trois flèches, les deux équipes ont encore tiré un score parfait de 30! C’est donc la flèche la plus proche du centre qui a décidé des vainqueurs, et c’est Wunderle qui a donné la médaille de bronze aux USA ! Les Japonais méritent aussi toutes nos félicitations pour leur magnifique compétition.

Arc à Poulies Hommes Le jeune Américain Gellenthien était solide en demi-finale contre l’expérimenté Genet (FRA). Le représentant des USA a débuté avec un 60 (après 6 flèches), alors que Genet a perdu deux points dans ses trois premières flèches. Malgré une bonne fin, Genet n’a pas pu revenir au score: 118–117 pour Gellenthien. Dans la deuxième demi, le 15e des qualifs, Duo (ESP), a continué d’avancer. Il suivait de près le Hollandais Elzinga (1 point après 6 flèches), mais la troisième volée a été décisive. Duo a marqué 30 points, Elzinga 28. Les trois dernières flèches n’ont pas pu changer le cours du match, et Duo a gagné 117–116 points.

La médaille de bronze a été disputée par deux des meilleurs archers de la Coupe du Monde 2006, Genet et Elzinga. Ils ne voulaient pas lâcher prise : 58–58 après 6 flèches, ensuite 87–87 et 116–116 points. Ils ont dû aller à un barrage en mort subite. Une flèche chacun, le meilleur

scoring 57 points. Salvi then continued with a perfect 30, while Agudo only shot 28 (87–85). The Italian fans were go-ing crazy! Another perfect 30 from Salvi proved too much for Agudo. Salvi won 117–113!

Recurve Men TeamThe bronze medal match in this category was one of the closest ever in Indoor! Japan and USA were neck and neck: 58–57, 117–116, 174–174, and 231–231. They had to shoot a tie-breaker—each team shooting three arrows (one per team member), a maximum of three times. After the first three arrows, the teams were tied. After the second three arrows, the teams were still tied. On the third tiebreaker of three arrows, both teams shot a perfect score of 30 points! It was then the arrow closest to the centre that decided the winner and Wunderle’s arrow gave the bronze medal to the USA! The Japanese also deserve congratulations for their superb championships.

In the final, the teams of Italy and Germany both started strongly with a score of 59–58 Italy after six arrows. They kept close after 12 arrows with 116 points each. Later on, Frangilli, Galiazzo and Tonelli turned it on, scoring 119 points out of 120 in the last 12 arrows. Too much for the Germans. The fans sang “Italia”! Italy won 235–228!

Recurve Women TeamIn the bronze medal match, it was really close between Ukraine and Turkey. Turkey was leading 174–173 but Ukraine prevailed 231–229 at the end.

France took an early and comfortable lead for the gold medal match versus Germany 58–54 after six arrows. They increased their lead to 117–108 halfway through. However, a few bad arrows shrank their lead to 170–167 after 18 arrows. In the last quarter, the French managed to score 59 points, clinching the gold 229–224!

Compound Men TeamThe Netherlands fought a very close medal match for the bronze versus Italy. They tied at 176 points after 18 arrows and then again at 232 points. They had to shoot three ar-rows (one per team member) in the tiebreaker. The Dutch scored a perfect 30 and took the bronze.

In the final, the French and USA teams had to adapt to the special Finals field in the Kültürpark Hall. They both started with 58 points, but France took a 117–116 lead after 12 arrows. The US came back after 18 arrows: 174–174! Once again, the Americans finished strong with another 58 points while France could not keep the pace, scoring a 56 with their last six arrows. Final score: 232–230, gold for USA!

Compound Women TeamItaly dominated the bronze medal match but Belgium gave a good fight at the end. Italy was leading the entire match and managed to save a one-point victory: 225–224.

Russia, led by World Cup Winner Goncharova, took on the USA for gold, with Van Natta, Collins and Pagel. The Russians took an early lead after six arrows 57–56 out of a possible 60. At half-match, the score was 114–113, but the USA tied after 18 arrows at 170–170. The USA scored another 57 points with their last three arrows, while Russia only got 56 points, with one arrow just outside the 10 ring. USA pulled out a come back victory 227–226!

Ils devaient tirer trois flèches (une par membre de l’équipe) dans le barrage. Les Hollandais ont marqué un score parfait de 30 et ont remporté le bronze.

Le choc des titans en finale, USA – France, a tenu ses promesses. Les équipes ont néanmoins dû s’habituer à la salle des finales et ont perdu quelques points. La France menait 117–116 après 12 flèches, mais les USA sont revenus à 174–174. Ils ont fait la différence sur les dernières flèches, réussissant 58 points, deux de plus que la France. Score fi-nal : 232–230, or pour les USA!

Arc à Poulies Dames par équipesAprès une défaite difficile en demi-finale, les Italiennes ont juste réussi à s’imposer cette fois. Elles ont mené tout le match et ont juste gardé un point de différence pour gagner contre la Belgique 225–224 points.

La Russie affrontait les USA en finale pour un grand classique. La Russie était emmenée par la gagnante de la Coupe du Monde 2006, Goncharova, alors que les USA pré-sentaient Van Natta, Collins et Pagel. Les Russes ont mené au début 56–57, mais les Américaines sont progressivement revenues pour arracher une victoire 227–226 points. La dernière flèche des Russes était juste sortie des 10 points… Quel suspense !

Magnus, tu fais partie des meilleurs archers depuis de nombreuses années, et on dirait que 2006 a été une année particulièrement bonne pour toi avec ton titre européen et ta troisième place à la Finale de la Coupe du Monde. Comment se fait-il que tu aies si bien tiré en 2006?Il y a différentes raisons. J’ai eu une attitude positive et détendue envers ma performance et j’ai tiré sans pression, ce qui a bien sûr beaucoup aidé.

Que penses-tu de la Coupe du Monde en général?La Coupe du Monde est une compétition fantastique qui a vraiment fait un grand pas dans la bonne direction. Elle a rendu le concept du tir à l’arc plus professionnel, et nous allons réellement dans la bonne direction.

En considérant ta carrière de plus de 10 ans au plus haut niveau, comment vois-tu l’évolution du tir à l’arc?Je pense que nous avons précisément eu une grande évo-lution ces trois dernières années avec les Jeux Olympiques d’Athènes et le concept de la Coupe du Monde. C’est vrai-ment le meilleur moyen. Ça permet d’offrir le meilleur du tir à l’arc aux médias et aux spectateurs. Et nous allons bien sûr développer encore plus ce format de compétition dans les prochaines années.

Quand tu étais plus jeune, tu as obtenu d’excellents résultats dans les années 1990, avec notamment une médaille d’argent aux Jeux Olympiques de 1996 et deux titres de champion du monde de tir en salle. Il semble qu’après ta quatrième place aux Jeux Olympiques de Sydney ton niveau ait un peu baissé. Pourquoi?

Magnus, you have been among the top archers for many years, but it seems that 2006 was particularly good to you with your European title and the 3rd place at the World Cup Final. What made you shoot so well in 2006?There were a couple of different reasons. I had a nice and relaxed attitude towards my performance and I was shoot-ing with no pressure, which of course helped a lot.

What do you think in general about the new Archery World Cup?The World Cup is a fantastic event and it is a huge step in the right direction. It has really made the whole archery concept more professional and we are definitely heading in the right direction.

Looking back over a more than 10-year career at the top level, how do you see the evolution of archery?I think we have had a great evolution in the last three years with the Athens Olympic Games and the World Cup concept. This is really the best way. It has all the best features that we can provide for the media and spectators, and we will of course develop the competition form further over the next years.

Early in your career, you had some great results in the 1990s, including a silver medal at the 1996 Olympics and two Indoor World titles. It seems that after your 4th place at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, you had some lower results. Why?Well, everyone hits a wall of doubt sooner or later and I had a hard time focusing. My practice took a hard bump.

It must indeed be hard to stay on top season after season. Your 2007 start has not been the best either with a first round elimination at the World Cup in Va-rese. Since you missed the Ulsan World Cup, you are now way behind on the World Cup ranking. What is hap-pening?I didn’t go to the Ulsan World Cup because my wife and I had the great pleasure of having our second baby. In Varese, I earned 25th place in qualification with a really bad score at 90 meters. I was then eliminated despite a good score in the first match. I didn’t put much into it and now I am preparing for the next World Cup in Antalya.

Are the wind or bad weather conditions like we had in the Varese World Cup a big factor for you? Are you used to it in Sweden?No. I can’t say I practice in bad conditions just to prepare for it. We have some pretty cold weather sometimes in Sweden, but then it is nice to have a good indoor arena to shoot in.

What are your ambitions now for 2007?To perform well in all the main events, and especially to be as prepared as possible for the World Championships in Leipzig.

Do you prefer match play with 12 arrows or the FITA Round with 144 arrows?I don’t put any energy into preferring any specific competi-tion form. I have to enjoy the different types of challenges that the competition provides.

Do you think a recurve man will ever break the mythical barrier of 1400 pts at a FITA round?I really hope so.

Have you been a real pro (doing only archery) at some point in your career?No, unfortunately not. I have sometimes been close to it, but always with a deadline when I had to come back to work.

We had the Field World Championships at your home club Lindome, near Göteborg, last year. Did you ever shoot Field competitively?Yes of course, I have won a couple of big tournaments and even a Swedish Championship as a junior. However, I don’t do it anymore.

Tu n’as pas très bien commencé l’année 2007, avec une élimination au premier tour de l’Etape de Coupe du Monde de Varèse. Tu n’as pas non plus participé à la Coupe du Monde d’Ulsan et tu es loin au classement. Qu’est-ce qui se passe ?Je ne suis pas allé à la Coupe du Monde d’Ulsan parce que ma femme et moi avons connu le grand bonheur d’avoir un bébé. A Varèse, j’ai pris la 25e place des qualifications avec un très mau-vais score à 90 m. Ensuite j’ai été éliminé malgré un bon score à mon premier match. Je ne m’en fais pas trop, maintenant je me prépare pour la prochaine Coupe du Monde à Antalya.

Est-ce que le vent ou les mauvaises conditions météo, comme à la Coupe du Monde de Varèse, sont des fac-teurs importants pour toi? Est-ce que tu y es habitué en Suède?Non. Je ne peux pas dire que je m’entraîne par mauvais temps juste pour y être préparé. Il fait parfois très froid en Suède, mais dans ce cas c’est bien de pouvoir tirer en salle.

Nowadays, how do you balance your personal, profes-sional and archery life?It is not so easy… I had to change jobs a couple of weeks ago due to the fact that I want more out of archery. I am now a consultant at Kelly Services. However, it is very ex-hausting to acclimate to a new work place—together with the fact that we had a second child in March. I could be in a better position, but on the other hand I wouldn’t change anything.

Any time left for hobbies?As you can guess… not at all (laughing).

How did you adjust your archery training over the years?That’s one of my secrets…but I have of course learned a lot during the years.

Do you do any physical training?Yes, of course.

How did you start archery?I was about 10 years old and was playing with my friends making bows. I wanted mine to be faster and stronger so it broke. My father bought me a new one and I broke even that one, because I wanted to have a faster one—so we contacted a local club.

Quels sont tes objectifs pour 2007?Eh bien, je veux être fin prêt pour les Championnats du Monde de Leipzig.Tu préfères les matches à 12 flèches ou les Rondes FITA à 144 flèches?Je ne dépense pas mon énergie à préférer une certaine forme de compétition. Penses-tu qu’un archer classique puisse un jour dé-passer la barrière mythique des 1400 points lors d’une Ronde FITA?J’espère vraiment que oui.

As-tu déjà été un vrai professionnel (se consacrant uni-quement au tir à l’arc) à un moment ou un autre de ta carrière?Non, malheureusement pas. J’ai parfois été près de l’être, mais j’avais chaque fois une date limite à laquelle je devais retourner travailler.

Les Championnats du Monde de Tir en Campagne de l’année passée se sont déroulés dans ton club de Lin-dome, près de Göteborg. Est-ce que tu as déjà participé à des compétitions de tir en campagne?Oui, bien sûr. J’ai gagné quelques tournois importants et même un championnat suédois junior. Mais je n’en fais plus.

Comment arrives-tu à concilier ta vie privée, ta vie pro-fessionnelle et le tir à l’arc?Ce n’est évidemment pas facile… J’ai dû changer d’emploi il y a deux semaines parce que je veux encore davantage du tir à l’arc. Je suis maintenant consultant chez Kelly Servi-ces. Cependant, cela prend de l’énergie de s’adapter à une nouvelle place de travail, en plus du fait que nous avons eu un deuxième enfant en mars dernier. Je pourrais avoir une meilleure situation, mais d’un autre côté je ne voudrais rien changer.

As-tu du temps pour tes hobbies?Comme tu peux le deviner… pas du tout (rires).

When exactly did you think you would become one of the top archers in the world?I don’t know. After I won the Indoor World Championships for the second time, I was getting used to the idea…

Est-ce que tu veux continuer à pratiquer le tir à l’arc de haut niveau encore longtemps?Oh oui…

Que vas-tu faire après?Respirer et profiter de mon temps libre…

Stage 1 of the Meteksan Archery World Cup 2007 was a great success in terms of organisation, fans and media interest with four hours live on MBC Korea TV channel. The archers put on a great show at the Munsu International Archery Centre in Ulsan, Korea. The final match of the first World Cup stage of the year in Ulsan featured two teammates: Wang Cheng Pang and Kuo Cheng Wei from Chinese Taipei. Twelve arrows de-

cided which of these two archers would become the first World Cup winner of the year in this category. Wang had the best start with 27 points, but Kuo was not far behind with 25. A big shift of the wind forced the archers to compensate and it was difficult for them to hit the centre of the target. The wind calmed down for the third end, which helped Kuo and Wang shoot a pair of 10s each. With three arrows to go, Wang was leading by three points (81 –78), an advantage he kept to win his first World Cup title with the final score of 108–105!

Recurve Men Individual–BronzeIm Dong Hyun had the best start for a local archer—he shot two 10s out of his first three arrows to lead by two points after the first end (28–26). However, the Russian Tsyrem-pilov came from behind, shooting a 10 and a pair of 9s in the second end. His opponent was having a hard time and shot 9-8-7—the match became more tense, with the two ar-chers both scoring a pair of 10s in the third end. Behind by

L’Etape 1 de la Coupe du Monde Meteksan de Tir à l’Arc 2007 a été un grand succès en termes d’organisation, de spectateurs et d’intérêt des médias, avec notamment quatre heures de retransmission en direct sur la chaîne TV MBC. Les archers ont offert un beau spectacle au Centre international de tir à l’arc de Munsu à Ulsan, en Corée. Avec le Chinese Taipei, la Corée, l’Iran, le Salvador et la Russie, ce sont trois continents qui sont représentés parmi les vainqueurs de cette première épreuve de l’année.

Le dernier match de la Première Etape de Coupe du Monde de l’année à Ulsan a mis aux prises deux coéquipiers: Wang Cheng Pan et Kuo Cheng Wei, de

Chinese Taipei. Douze flèches pour décider qui de ces deux archers serait le premier gagnant de l’année dans la catégorie masculine de l’arc classique. Wang a pris le meilleur départ avec 25 points. A ce moment-là, un grand changement de vent a forcé les archers à contre viser et il devenait alors difficile pour eux d’aller aussi près du centre qu’ils l’auraient souhaité. Le vent se calmait pour la troisième volée, ce qui aidait Kuo et Wang à réussir chacun une paire de 10. A seulement trois flèches de la fin, Wang menait de trois points (81-78), un avantage qu’il allait garder pour remporter son premier titre de Coupe du Monde sur le score final de 108-105!

La partie est devenue plus tendue encore quand les archers ont tiré tous deux une nouvelle paire de 10 à la troisième volée. En retard d’un point avant les trois dernières flèches, Im réussis-sait d’abord un petit 7, mais marquait ensuite un score parfait de 10. Il ne restait alors qu’une seule flèche, et la différence entre les archers était la plus petite possible en faveur du Russe! Ce dernier réussissait à garder la tête en terminant avec un total de 108, contre 106 à son adversaire.

Arc Classique Dames Finale–OrLes deux Coréennes, Park Sung Hyun et Choi Eun Young, étaient à égalité après les trois premières flèches (27) et également après la deuxième volée (54). La troisième flèche de Park touchait le plein centre de la cible où se trouvait la caméra, ce que Park avait déjà fait deux fois aux Jeux Olympiques d’Athènes. Elle augmentait encore sa supériorité en tirant ensuite une dernière vo-lée parfaite (10-10-10) pour finir avec 111 points. Malgré un tir également sur la caméra en plein centre de la ci-ble avec sa dernière flèche, Choi n’a pas pu empêcher sa coéquipière d’ajouter un nouveau titre majeur à son palmarès déjà bien fourni.

Recurve Women Individual–GoldTwo Koreans, Choi Eun Young and Olympic Champion Park Sung Hyun, were tied after the first three arrows (27) and after the second end as well (54). With her third arrow, Park shot a perfect 10 right into the centre where the camera was—something she did twice during the Olympic Games in Athens. She took the lead on the ninth arrow when her opponent shot an 8. She then added to her su-periority, shooting a perfect last end (10-10-10), to finish with 111 points. Although, shooting right into the camera as well with her last arrow, Choi could not stop her teammate from winning another title in her already well-crowned career.

Recurve Women Individual–BronzeThe bronze medal match between the two other Korean la-dies, Yun Ok Hee and Lee Tuk Young, was not as exciting as local fans had expected. Scoring two bad ends of 23 and 22, Lee was already behind by 9 points mid-way through the match (45–54). The duel then balanced itself but, in a match of 12 arrows only, it was too late for Lee who had to concede victory to her teammate Yun.

first end. She could not recover from such a bad start, since Kazantseva proved stronger starting with 28 and 29 first ends. Although Goncharova aimed better in the second half of the match (28 and 28), her total of 106 was too low to stop her friend from taking revenge and winning her second World Cup stage (her first win first was in Porec last year).

Compound Women Individual–BronzeThe first match of the afternoon was kind of a “no match.” The Indonesian, Kusumaniah left no chance for her op-ponent, who might have been nervous because it was her first appearance to such a stage. The Iranian Akram could not pass the 100-point barrier and left the bronze medal to Kusumaniah (99–106).

Recurve Men TeamThe team match has 24 arrows, twice as many as an individ-ual match, and each team has three members alternating shots. In this category, Korea was facing the Italian team of reigning Olympic Champion Galiazzo, 2006 World Cup run-ner-up Di Buo and 2003 World Champion Frangilli. This was a very high-level confrontation in cold and windy weather conditions. Taking the lead with his second arrow, the World Cup 2006 winner Park K.M. and his teammates’, Im D.H. and Lee C.H., concentration never let down. When the Italians put pressure on with a 9-10-10 series, the Koreans stayed on their guard and replied with the same three arrows. They finished in such a strong way—with five additional 10s out of their last nine arrows and a final score of 220—that the Italians could only congratulate them.

France took another bronze, ahead of Mexico.

Recurve Women TeamLocal spectators had crowded the stands for the first medal match featuring a Korean team. With Poland as opponents, Yun M.J., Yun O.H. and Park S.H. had a hard time finding their marks. Although leading after six arrows, they then found themselves behind by two points (73–75) after they shot a low series of 7-6-9. The same margin separated the two teams at the half-way point (100–102). The Korean la-dies recovered from their disadvantage and were tied with Cwienczek, Marcinkiewicz and Mospinek after the third end. World Record holder Park chose that moment to increase the pressure with a 10 on her last but one arrow. One of her teammates imitated her with another 10 in the last end to take another victory with a score of 203–194.

This time, France was stopped from winning the bronze. Great Britain took it 200–193.

Ne tirant que 7-8-9, elle était déjà en retard de 4 points après la première volée. Un mauvais départ qu’elle n’a jamais pu rattraper, car Kazantseva avait beaucoup mieux commencé avec des premières volées de 28 et 29 points. Poulies Dames Finale–BronzeLe premier match de toutes les finales individuelles a été une sorte de non-match… L’Indonésienne Kusumaniah n’a laissé aucune chance à son adversaire, qui devait être impressionnée par sa première apparition à ce niveau de compétition. L’Iranienne Akram n’a pas réussi à dépasser la barrière des 100 points dans ce match et a dû laisser la victoire et la médaille de bronze à Kusumaniah (99-106).

Dans cette catégorie, le pays hôte, la Corée, devait en découdre avec l’équipe italienne, compo-sée du champion olympique en titre Galiazzo, du deuxième de la Coupe du Monde 2006 Di Buo et du champion du monde 2003 Frangilli. Cette confrontation a

In a match that Great Britain started with an amazing 10-10-10 first end, the Iranians confirmed they are to be counted on in the future. The match was extremely tight all the way. The results of this match became even more uncertain when the British team of Wakelin, Grimwood and White drew as close as one single point behind (142–143), imitating their opponent with a perfect fifth end. However, the Iranian team proved strong enough to control their nerves, claim-ing gold 224–223.

The victory was also narrow for the bronze medal match. France took the bronze over Australia 222–221.

L’issue de ce match est devenue de plus en plus incertaine lorsque les Britanniques Wakelin, Grimwood et White sont revenus à un seul petit point (142-143) en imitant leurs adversaires avec une cinquième volée parfaite. Cependant, l’équipe iranienne pouvait compter sur Ahmadi, Sadeghimaeibody et Zamaninejad, qui ont prouvé qu’ils avaient les nerfs solides en remportant l’or 224-223.La victoire s’est aussi jouée sur le fil pour le bronze. La France a battu l’Australie 222-221 points.

Compound Women TeamThis Compound Women final was a classic with the four individual finalists of the 2006 World Cup: Kazantzeva and Goncharova for Russia, Van Natta and Davis for USA, and their respective teammates Bolotova and Fleury. The East European team started the match stronger than the Ameri-cans. Led by a solid Goncharova, the Russian team shot seven 10s out of their first nine arrows! The Americans tried hard to fill in the gap that separated them from their oppo-nents, but the Russian archers would not leave the slightest breach for Van Natta and her teammates to seep in. Russia finally clinched the match with a great total of 225 points over USA who finished with 221.

France took third place defeating the host country, Ko-rea.

Even though firearms replaced the bow and arrow on the field on battle, shooting a bow and arrow was still practiced and it became a discipline based upon shooting an arrow the greatest distance. With the use of an Ottoman recurve composite distance bow, archers were able to shoot distances that today modern technology bows cannot reach. Some of the records have not been broken in over 400 years.


The archers put on a real show the last day of competition, despite the difficult and rainy conditions. The individual winners were Ericsson (SWE), Gellenthien (USA), Lee (KOR) and Frangilli (ITA) —while France, USA, China and Great Britain took the team finals. The exciting matches were shot in the presence of FITA Honorary President Mr. Francesco Gnecchi-Ruscone.

Here are the key events.

Recurve Men Individual–Gold

The first end was tied between the Russian archer Tsyrempilov and the Italian archer Frangilli (27–27). But the home crowd favourite didn’t want to lose this match

in front of live TV and cheering Italian fans in the stands. After the first three arrows, he led the match all the way through to the final arrow. Frangilli took gold with a score of 109–107. Tsyrempilov won a well deserved silver medal.

Recurve Men Individual–BronzeThis was the most exciting match of the day! Aubert (FRA) started behind Nespoli (ITA) (25–28). In the second end Ne-spoli was still ahead with 54–53. In the third end, Nespoli shot three 9s, while Aubert took the lead by shooting 9-10-10—the score was then 82–81. Aubert maintained the lead in the last end, and brought the bronze medal home! The final score was 110–109.

Les archers ont donné un vrai spectacle lors du dernier jour de compétition malgré les conditions difficiles et pluvieuses de toute la semaine. Les médaillés d’or individuels sont Ericsson (SWE), Gellenthien (USA), Lee (KOR) et Frangilli (ITA). La France, les USA, la Chine et la Grande-Bretagne ont gagné par équipes. Les matches ont été tirés en présence du Président Honoraire de la FITA, M. Francesco Gnecchi-Ruscone.

Four Champions from Four Countries on the Individual Podium in Varese, Stage 2 of the Archery World Cup!

Recurve Women Individual–GoldThe Korean archer, Lee, took a two-point advantage in the first end, and after that, didn’t let the Russian archer get close until the last end, when Russian almost caught up. Lee needed a 10 with her last arrow to clinch the match—she actually shot an X10 to take home the gold! The final score was 112–111.

Recurve Women Individual–BronzeThe archer from Belarus, Marusava, took the lead in the match in the first end by two points (25–23). She then in-creased the lead slowly with each end. The first end for Valeeva was quite low with 7-7-9, and she never recovered. Bronze went for Marusava with a score of 105–102! To note, both athletes are coming back to the competition, after giv-ing birth last year.

Compound Men Individual–GoldThe match began with a perfect score for Gellenthien (USA), and “only” 29 points for Jimenez (ESA). But Gellenthien wanted to impress his opponent by shooting only 10s, which he did until the last arrow, which was a 9! With the American scoring 119 points, Jimenez couldn’t do better with his 117 points, although he tried hard to come back. If Gellenthien had shot a 10 with his last arrow, he would have broken the world record with 120 points, including eight X10s. What a great performance!

Compound Men Individual–BronzeSwiss archer, Hofer, started strong with a perfect end (30–28). But suddenly he shot an 8 and a 9 and his opponent from Brazil, Dos Santos, took advantage of the situation to shoot a perfect score and go ahead of Hofer by one point (58–57). Dos Santos was too strong for Hofer, whose score continued to drop. The final result was 116–114 in favour of Dos Santos, who took home the bronze.

Compound Women Individual–GoldSwedish archer Ericsson led the match from the beginning to the end with the score difference growing end after end. Van Natta (USA) was not strong enough against Ericsson and she lost the gold medal match with a score of 110–116.

Compound Women Individual–BronzeThe match began badly for the Iranian archer Akram, whose first arrow was a six. Willems (BEL) shot a perfect score and led the match from the first end up to the last. The final score was of 115–104 in favour of Willems.

In the second end, the British team shot a six, which frightened them a bit, as the score difference by then was only two points (158–156). In the next end, they shot a 10-9-9, while the Australians shot 8-9-10. The last end was very exciting—the Aussies shot a 27, and the British team had to shoot only 26 points to clinch the match. Arc Classique Dames - BronzeL’archère biélorusse Marusava a pris la tête du match dès la première volée avec deux points d’avance (25-23). Elle a ensuite doucement augmenté son score à chaque volée. La première volée de Valeeva était assez basse avec 7-7-9 et elle n’a jamais pu revenir au score. Le bronze revient à Ma-rusava avec un score de 105-102. A noter que les deux ath-lètes reviennent à la compétition cette année après avoir donné naissance à leurs bébés.

Van Natta (USA) n’a pas été assez forte contre Ericsson et elle a perdu le match pour la médaille d’or avec un score de 110-116. Ericsson est repartie avec la médaille d’or!

Arc Classique Hommes par EquipesL’équipe britannique a commencé avec 6 points d’avance sur l’équipe australienne. Les Australiens ne voulaient pas laisser passer leur chance et ils ont réduit la diffé-rence de score petit à petit, volée après volée. Dans la troisième volée, les Britanniques ont tiré un 6, après quoi ils ont eu chaud (malgré le temps), puisque la différence de score n’était plus que de deux points (158-156). Dans la volée suivante, les Britanniques ont tiré 10-9-9, alors que les Australiens ont tiré 8-9-10. La dernière volée a été passionnante. Les Aussies ont commencé avec 27 points, et les Britanniques n’avaient qu’à tirer 26 points pour gagner le match. Cependant ils n’ont réussi que 25 points, ce qui a rééquilibré le match! Le barrage a donné un petit point de plus à l’équipe britannique, qui a tiré 27 points contre 26 pour l’Australie. L’or est pour la Grande-Bretagne!

Recurve Women TeamThe Polish team began with a slight advantage over the Chinese (28–26), but one member of Poland’s team shot a six, which allowed China to tie the score 50–50. The match was still tied midway in the second end with 77 points for each side, but China took the lead by one point (104–103). Poland went ahead in the next round to lead 132–131. China kept shooting well and, at the end, Poland shot some low arrows (7s and 8s), which allowed the Chinese to win the match 212–217 and take home the gold.

Korea was taken out by Poland in the semi-final. However, the Koreans won the bronze medal over Belarus (218–200).

Compound Men TeamThe Americans took the lead over the French team by two points after the first end (29–27 / 57–55). France tried to come back but the Americans continued to increase their lead (86–81). In the next end, USA scored 60 points (146 points), while France stayed far behind with only 135 points. France tried hard to tie the score but the Americans were too strong. USA won the gold with a score of 233–219.

Winning in Ulsan, and again in Varese, the Iranian team took bronze over Switzerland (229–213).

Compound Women TeamThe Russian team was leading by one point (28–27) after three arrows, but France didn’t let down and tied the score at 56–56. France got its act together to increase their lead slightly end by end and finally brought home the gold with a score of 224–221.

The USA beat the home team, Italy, for bronze, 222–216.

World Record in the FITA Round for Bouillot (FRA)Earlier in the week, Amandine Bouillot (FRA) scored 1404 points in Compound Women to break the American Van Natta’s world record for a FITA Round! Bouillot capped a magnificent day of shooting with a perfect score at 30 me-ters shooting 360 points for 36 arrows. Her other scores were 347 points at 70m, 353 points at 60m and 344 points at 50m.

After receiving congratulations from about the whole field of archers, Amandine Bouillot said: “It’s fantastic! I re-ally wanted to break this world record. I shot 1403 in a non-official competition in France last week, so I knew I could do it! I also wanted to show that there are good compound women in France and not only in Russia or in the USA. A cet instant, Xue semblait perdre une partie de sa concentration: après avoir réussis quatre 10 consécutifs, il tirait un 8 et un 7. Le score était ainsi à égalité. Serrano restait régulier avec une volée de 28 points, alors que Xue marquait 8-9-10 et laissait l’avantage à son adversaire pour un point (83-82). Puis le Chinois perdait totalement pieds avec un autre 7 à sa onzième flèche… Serrano pouvait quant à lui terminer le match sur un 10 parfait et remporter le bronze en Classique Hommes (110-107).

Xue immediately put pressure on him by scoring a perfect 30 with his first three arrows. Serrano went on with a triple 9 and a total of 55. At that moment Xue seemed to lose a bit of concentration: after four consecutive 10s, he shot 8 and 7. The score was then tied! Serrano could keep consistency with a 28-point end, while Xue scored 8-9-10, leaving the lead to his oppo-nent by one point (83-82). Then, the Chinese archer totally got out of his depth with another 7 at his eleventh arrow… Serrano finished his match with a perfect 10 and took the Recurve Men bronze (110-107).

Recurve Women – GoldMo. 1 ranked Choi Eun Young (KOR) faced Natalya Erdyniyeva (RUS) in this category. The Italian took the line first and opened the match with 29 out of a pos-sible 30. It was Lee’s turn to shoot first for the second end, since she was trailing behind by one point at that time. She scored a triple 9, while Valeeva scored a 7 with her fourth arrow but went on with two perfect shots to keep her lead (56-55). The Italian even doubled her advantage in the third end: 84-82. The two archers proved very close to one an-other, as they were ranked 4th and 6th in the qualifications. However, with a low 8-10-8 series, Valeeva let Lee come back and tie the match after the twelve regular arrows of the match. Shoot-off! Valeeva shot another poor 8 and Lee took victory with a 10.

The level raised high in the second end with a perfect three arrow se-ries and a two point lead for the Brazilian (58-56). However, Hasenfuss came back with a perfect end to tie the match at 86! The two archers were tied with one arrow to go (105-105). Both archers shot a 9 at this moment, which led them to a shoot-off! Roberval, with a low arrow, scored only 8 and left the door open to Hasenfuss who took victory with a 10!

The latter opened the match with 8-10-9, while Anastasio started with a triple 9. The match was tied at 27. Willems continued with a per-fect 10-10-10 end to take a big advantage over her opponent who shot a 6-7-9 (57-49). It was a tough experience for the young Italian archer to play at such a level. She held it well, though, with a triple 9 in the third end. However, Willems showed why she holds the World Record (1411) for the FITA Round: another 10-9-9 end for her and a lead of 8 points (84-76). No problem for Willems then to clinch the match and win bronze with a comfortable margin: 112-102.

La Hollande prenait un mauvais départ en tirant 48 points seulement avec leurs six premières flèches. La Russie en avait réussi 56 et allait garder son avantage de huit points tout au long du match. Le score après 12 flèches était de 110-102. Après 18 flèches, les Russes menaient 163-155 et ils n’ont perdu qu’un point sur la fin pour un score total de 216-209 sur 24 flèches.

Le match pour la médaille de bronze a mis aux prises l’Ukraine et la Malaisie. Après que l’avantage ait passé d’une équipe à l’autre, c’est finalement les archers ukrainiens qui ont eu le dernier mot et offert ainsi la médaille de bronze à leur pays (212-211).

The Dutch had a really bad start shooting only 48 points with the opening six ar-rows. Russia had 56 points and kept its eight point lead all the way through the match. Arc Classique Dames par EquipesLe match pour l’or rassemblait les Coréennes Choi, Lee et Park contre les Italiennes Valeeva, Perosini et Lionetti. Les deux équipes démarraient lentement avec un score de 52-51 après la première volée. La Corée a ensuite trouvé son rythme en marquant 55 points sur les six flèches suivantes alors que l’Italie ne pouvait faire mieux que 50. Le reste du match a suivi cette logique et les Coréennes ont creusé l’écart pour s’imposer 218-204.

La médaille de bronze était remportée par la Chine qui ne rencontrait aucune difficulté pour battre la France. Les archères asiatiques ont mené le match de bout en bout, améliorant même leur avantage au passage: 56-54, 108-105, 161-155 et 216-209.

The bronze medal match put together Ukraine and Malaysia. After a coming and going lead between the two teams, at last it was the Ukrainian archers who came out victorious (212-211).

Recurve Women TeamThis gold medal match was featuring Choi, Lee and Park rep-resenting Korea and Valeeva, Perosini and Lionetti for Italy. Both teams started with low scores and Korea had a one point lead after the first end (52-51). Korea then found its rhythm in the second end scoring 55 points. Italy could not do better than a 50. The rest of the match kept the same trend. Korea increased its lead with every end and took the gold medal with a score of 218-204.

The bronze medal was won by China who got over France. The Asians led the match from the beginning to the end, in-creasing their advantage on the way: 56-54, 108-105, 161-155 and 216-209.

Compound Men TeamThe beginning of the match was quite tight between France and Denmark. They both earned 83 points after nine arrows, but France turned it on. The French took a two point lead after twelve arrows. They followed with two other ends of 59 points (out of 60) and took the match 230-225!

The Belgian archers had a nice run in this event, but they paid back their early efforts shooting a low 214 in the

pendant, les Russes revenaient dans la troisième volée pour mener 165-164. Les USA répondaient par la suite avec un très bon 10-10-9 alors que la Russie ne faisait que 27 points (10-9-8), abandonnant encore la tête à leurs adversaires. Les Américaines ont terminé avec 10-10-9 pour un total de 221 sur un score possible de 240. Les Russes concluaient le match avec 9-8-10, s’inclinant de deux points (221-219).

La médaille de bronze en Poulies Dames s’est jouée en-tre les surprenantes Vénézuéliennes et les Italiennes. Les archères sud-américaines, qui avaient auparavant battu la France d’un cheveu, n’ont pu cette fois pas contenir la supé-riorité des Italiennes (223-213) et ont dû laisser la troisième place à leurs adversaires européennes.

Record du Monde pour la RussieUn nouveau Record du Monde a été réussi en Poulies Dames par la Russie, l’équipe d’Oktyabrina Bolotova, Sofia Goncha-rova et Anna Kazantseva! Leur premier match de la journée contre leurs hôtes turques fut tout simplement magnifique avec un score final de 231. Elles ont fait un point de mieux que le précédent Record du Monde qu’elles avaient elles-mêmes établi un an plus tôt à Antalya.

Cette performance confirme le haut niveau de l’arc à poulies féminin ces temps car plusieurs records ont été battu, notamment:

— Amandine Bouillot (FRA) a placé le Record du Monde pour une Ronde FITA à 1404 points lors de l’étape de Varèse.

— Gladys Willems (BEL) l’a battu seulement 10 jours plus tard et l’a placé à un extraordinaire 1411 points lors d’un tournoi à Goirle (NED)

— Jamie Van Natta (USA) est devenue la première femme en poulies à tirer un match parfait à 120 points, de plus avec sept X10. Elle l’a fait à la New Jersey Gold Cup le 27 mai.

L’Etape 3 de la Coupe du Monde Meteksan de Tir à l’Arc 2007 a produit de superbes matchs et tous étaient retransmis en direct sur TRT et la chaîne nationale polonaise. C’était aussi le 20ème Tournoi de la Flèche d’Or à Antalya et les organisa-teurs ont une nouvelle fois très bien accueilli les archers. La dernière manche qualificative se déroulera à Douvres du 31 juillet au 5 août, avec beaucoup de places encore à prendre pour la Finale de Dubaï le 24 novembre (quatre places au total par catégorie). Cela est de bon augure pour une autre compétition de tir à l’arc palpitante!

Compound Women TeamBoth teams had to adapt to the final field and halfway through the match, the USA were leading Russia 109-107. However, Russia came back in the third end and earned a one point lead (165-164). USA answered with an almost per-fect 10-10-9, while Russia achieved only 27 points (10-9-8) and left again the lead to their opponents. The Americans finished with 10-9-9 with their last three arrows for a total score of 221 out of a possible 240. The Russians closed the match with 9-8-10, bowing before the American ladies by two points (221-219).

The bronze medal was played between the surprising Ven-ezuelans and the Italians. The South American archers, who had previously defeated France by a hair’s breadth, could not withstand the Italian superiority (223-213) this time and had to let third place go to their European opponents.

Team World Record for RussiaA new team World Record was made in Compound Women by Russia. The team of Oktyabrina Bolotova, Sofia Goncharova and Anna Kazantseva shot a superb 231 points in their match against the host team Turkey. The same women previously set the record at 230 points in Antalya, just one year ago.

This achievement is in line with a streak of World Records in Compound Women including:

— Amandine Bouillot (FRA) shot the World Record for a FITA Round in Varese with 1404 points.

— Gladys Willems (BEL) broke it just 10 days later and put it an amazing 1411 points in a tournament in Goirle (NED).

— Jamie Van Natta (USA) was the first Compound Women to shoot a perfect 120 points with seven X10 for the World Record in the individual match play. It took place at the New Jersey Gold Cup on 27 May.

Stage 3 of the Meteksan Archery World Cup 2007 produced some great matches that were all broadcast live on TRT and the Polish national channel! It was the 20th Golden Arrow Tournament in Antalya and the organizers took very good care of the archers once again. The final qualifying stage will be held in Dover from 31 July to 5 August, and many places still remain undecided for the World Cup Final in Dubai on 24 November. This bodes well for another exciting archery competition!

Compound Women Team Final: USA - Russia Compound Women Team: World Record for Russia!


This year’s fourth and final stage of the Meteksan Archery World Cup, and the 3rd and final leg of the European and Mediterranean Archery Union Grand Prix, are being held

in Dover on the south coast of England.The tournament will run from 31st July to 5th August

2007, and promises to be a spectacular event. And I can assure you of nothing less than a sincere, warm and en-thusiastic welcome from the friends, familiar faces, fellow archers and former international competitors who have already volunteered to be part of this event.

I’d also like to extend this invitation to your families and friends, who I’m sure, would welcome an opportunity to share in the atmosphere of the competition and enjoy many additional events being organised to complement the tournament.

De plus, avec la bonne situation de Douvres au cœur de l’Europe du Nord, la compétition offre la perspective d’une appréciable pause estivale en Grande-Bretagne pour ceux qui voudraient explorer le sud de l’Angleterre.

L’Association de Tir à l’Arc du Kent se réjouit beaucoup de cette compétition. Ses archers se réjouissent d’accueillir les athlètes des autres pays dans leur club, sur leur terrain d’entraînement et au tournoi local pour la compétition!

The Kent Archery Association is very enthusiastic about this event. Its resident archers are looking forward to welcoming visiting competitors to their club and practice facilities and to local tournaments to check out the com-petition!

FITA has, for several years, been working for consistency in judging, acknowledging the importance for the ar-chers throughout the world to meet the same under-

standing of rules and procedures among judges, and thus avoiding surprises that might be a “put-off” for archers in achieving their best performances.

And talking about surprises, we are not only talking about ways of doing things, but also about attitudes and behaviour in order to make events a positive experience for all people involved—archers (especially the young ones), coaches, organizers, media and even spectators.

In an attempt to manage a high level of performance among our judges—parallel to the increasing level of the ar-chers and the competitions—a three-step system has been established to give our judges both a proper education and

pétitions, nous avons établi un système en trois étapes pour donner aux juges une bonne formation ainsi que l’ex-périence nécessaire pour remplir leur rôle de manière satis-faisante. Ils doivent être juges nationaux pendant quelques années avant de pouvoir juger à un niveau continental, où ils gagneront une expérience de haut niveau en coopérant avec les juges internationaux de la FITA. Après cela, ils pour-ront suivre un séminaire et passer un examen pour devenir juges de la FITA.

Nous réalisons – et en ceci nous sommes à un moment décisif – qu’environ un quart de nos juges internationaux prendront leur retraite en 2008 en raison de la limite d’âge. Nous avons besoin de combler ce vide. Pour nous permettre de le faire, nos Associations Membres ont prévu dans leur agenda la formation de nouveaux juges et recherchent ac-tivement les candidats adéquats pour être juges au niveau international. En parlant de candidats adéquats, ces der-

They have to be national judges for some years before they may jump to the continental judges level, where they will gain high-level experience in co-operation with international judges (FITA). Thereafter, they may pass a seminar and an exam in order to become FITA Judges.

We realize—and as such we are at a turning point—that approximately one quarter of all our international judges will retire in 2008 (age limit) and we need to fill that gap. To enable us to do that, our Member Associations have to put judging education on their agenda and seriously look for suitable candidates for possible international-level judging. Talking about suitability, the candidates should look upon judging as an important part of our events, have a protec-tive and cooperative attitude, and have certain knowledge of English—the international working language for judges.

Due to the procedure laid out, it is obvious that creat-ing the good international judges, that our future archers deserve, will take some time.

Therefore, we hope that everyone realizes the impor-tance of starting a possible judging career at a relatively young age. Discussions have now started between the FITA

Youth Development Committee and the FITA Judge Commit-tee regarding a possible “joint venture” project to involve young people in judging. The goal is to keep some of the young archers—who, for various reasons are not at the top level—within our archery family, by encouraging them to fill other important roles, instead of watching them disappear from our sport.

Our aim is to develop, in cooperation with the Continen-tal Associations, a program based on field experience and case studies in order to develop a knowledge of rules and the art of judging.

We are indeed convinced that the training of young judges needs a specific pedagogy. Therefore, the first step would be for candidates to develop their competencies, at the national level in youth competitions being supported by a senior national judge.

When judging experience is validated at the national lev-el, a training camp should be organised at the Continental Association level during a youth international competition. By alternating courses, lectures and judging in competitions with a senior international judge, young judges should gain the capacity to judge at the international youth level and so become International Judge Candidates.

By instituting such a “joint venture” programme, there will also be a need for those well-experienced judges retiring from active duties, in developing a new generation of judges.

We have is no time to lose!

Ainsi, nous espérons que chacun réalisera l’importance de commencer une éventuelle carrière de juge à un âge relativement jeune. Le Comité de Développement de la Jeu-nesse et le Comité des Juges de la FITA ont engagé des dis-cussions à propos d’un éventuel partenariat visant à initier au jugement certains jeunes archers qui, pour différentes raisons, ne concourent pas au meilleur niveau, mais pour-raient remplir d’autres rôles importants dans notre famille du tir à l’arc.

Notre objectif est de développer, en coopération avec les Associations Continentales, un programme basé sur une expérience de terrain et des études de cas pour développer la connaissance des règles et l’art du jugement.

Nous sommes convaincus que la formation des jeunes juges demande une stratégie pédagogique spécifique. Ainsi, dans un premier temps, les candidats devraient développer leurs compétences au niveau national dans des compéti-tions juniors en étant assistés par un juge national senior.

Une fois que l’expérience du jugement sera validée au niveau national, un camp d’entraînement devrait être or-ganisé au niveau des Association Continentales lors d’une compétition internationale pour juniors. En alternant les cours, les conférences et la pratique de jugement en com-pétition avec un juge international senior, les jeunes juges devraient acquérir les capacités de juger au niveau junior international et ainsi de devenir des candidats au titre de juges internationaux.

En instituant un tel partenariat, nous aurons aussi be-soin des juges expérimentés qui quittent leurs fonctions pour former une nouvelle génération de juges.

Il n’y a pas de temps à perdre!

Judges Seminar

The Judges Seminar, which is the first step of the FITA proj-ect for the Russian Speaking Countries, was successfully held between 12 and 15 April 2007 in Antalya, Turkey.

Twenty three national judge candidates from 13 coun-tries attended the seminar. FITA International Judge Victor Stanescu was the lecturer and Zorigto Mankhanov (also FITA International Judge) made the translations and the techni-cal explanations in Russian.

On 14 April, FITA President Prof. Ugur Erdener visited the last session and made a speech to the participants. He emphasized the special importance of this project for FITA, congratulated and thanked all the participants, and finally handed out their certificates. He also expressed his special thanks to Mr Stanescu and Mr Mankhanov for their valuable contribution to this important project.

The countries attending this Judges Seminar were: Ar-menia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Estonia, Georgia, Ka-zakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Tajikistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.

Séminaire des Juges

Le Séminaire des Juges, qui est le premier pas du projet de la FITA pour les pays russophones, s’est tenu du 12 au 15 avril 2007 à Antalya en Turquie.

Cours d’entraîneursPlus tard, la FITA a invité tous les pays russophones à parti-ciper à un Cours d’Entraîneurs de Niveau 1 qui s’est tenu du 22-26 mai 2007 à Antalya en Turquie.

Le discours d’ouverture a été fait par le Président de la FITA Prof. Ugur Erdener. Vingt trois candidats au niveau 1 d’entraîneur de dix pays ont participé au cours qui était conduit par Andre Korlaar, Mario Codispoti, Pascal Colmaire et Juan Carlos Holgado. Zorigto Mankhanov a une nouvelle fois fait les traductions et les explications techniques en Russe. La plus grande partie de la formation d’entraîneur était pratique : elle expliquait des situations sur le terrain de tir à l’arc avec des arcs et des flèches en main. Un parti-cipant jouait le rôle d’un débutant au tir à l’arc et un autre comme entraîneur de niveau 1 (et inversement). A la fin du cours, des certificats ont été distribué à tous les partici-pants.

La FITA a couvert tous les frais de déplacement d’un participant ainsi que les frais d’hébergement pour deux participants.

Les pays qui ont pris part à ce Cours d’Entraîneurs de Ni-veau 1 sont: Arménie, Azerbaïdjan, Bulgarie, Estonie, Géorgie, Lettonie, Lituanie, Roumanie, Tadjikistan et Ouzbékistan.

En plus de ces séminaires, un kit d’équipement de ni-veau 1 (12 arcs, 144 flèches, plusieurs petits matériel pour le tir et les réparations, etc.) a été proposé à tous les pays participants pour autant qu’ils remplissent les critères de donation de la FITA. Parmi ces critères, un est essentiel : un Plan de Développement.

La liste des 12 récipiendaires de ces kits d’équipement inclut : Arménie, Azerbaïdjan, Belarus, Estonie, Géorgie, Ka-zakhstan, Lettonie, Lituanie, Moldavie, Roumanie, Tadjikis-tan et Ouzbékistan.

La FITA aimerait remercier les Partenaires du Fonds de Développement pour leur soutien – spécialement Ragim, Win & Win et Easton qui ont donné la plupart du matériel de tir à l’arc. La FITA aimerait aussi remercier la banque mondiale HSBC pour son implication dans ce projet pour les pays russophones

Coaching Course

About a month later FITA invited all Russian speaking coun-tries to participate in a Coaching Course, which was held between 23 and 26 May 2007 in Antalya, Turkey.

The opening was made by the FITA President Prof. Ugur Erdener. Twenty three Level 1 coach candidates from ten countries attended the course, which was conducted by Andre Korlaar, Mario Codispoti, Pascal Colmaire and Juan Carlos Holgado. Zorigto Mankhanov made once again the translations and the technical explanations in Russian. Most of the coaching education was practical: i.e. imple-menting coaching situations on archery range with bows and arrows in hands. One participant was acting as a be-ginner and one as a level 1 coach (and alternatively). At the end of the course certificates were distributed to all the participants.

FITA covered the travel expenses for one participant and the accommodation costs for two participants.

The countries attending this Level 1 Coaching Course were: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Estonia, Georgia, Lat-via, Lithuania, Romania, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

On top of these seminars, one level 1 archery equipment kit (12 bows, 144 arrows, many small items for shooting, repairing…) was proposed to each participating country as long as they complied with the FITA donation criteria. Among these criteria one is absolutely mandatory: a Devel-opment Plan.

The final list of 12 recipients of the equipment kit in-cludes: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Ka-zakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Romania, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.

We will take a rare look behind the scenes at Hoyt, as a Nexus riser is fabricated from a single block of aluminum alloy.

Archery is abundantly evident even in the office spaces at Hoyt. This is the customer service area where calls are taken from dealers and consumers.

Each NC machin-ing center is con-trolled by a pro-gram generated during the design process. The program controls the exact cutting operation of the equipment as it transforms the solid aluminum block to a riser.

In the design process, engineers such as George Tekmi-tchov plot stresses and determine the basic design. The computer simulations shown here indicate the effect of stress on the riser, magnified more than 15 times for easy visibility.

Chaque centre d’usinage NC est contrôlé par un programme gé-

néré durant le processus de design. Ce programme contrôle l’opération de découpage exact de l’équipement pendant la transformation du bloc d’aluminium en un corps d’arc.

Au cours du processus de design, des ingénieurs comme George Tekmitchov exercent des pressions et déterminent le modèle de base. La simulation par ordinateur montrée ici indique l’effet de la tension sur le corps d’arc, magnifiée plus de 15 fois pour une meilleure visibilité.


Après les simulations par ordinateur, le modèle final est réalisé en métal. Le prototype de métal est ensuite soumis à un test intense de résistance, avec 1 million de cycles de tirs et 1500 tirs à vide avec 50 kg de tension. C’est seule-ment si le test est réussi que l’on donne le feu vert pour la production.

After the computer simulations are completed, the final de-sign is made in metal. The metal prototype is then subjected to torture testing, including 1,000,000 shooting cycles, and 1,500 dry fires at 50 kg draw weight. Only if the test part survives the tests is the OK given for production.

After several cutting operations in the More Seki CNC center the large aluminum block begins to reveal the riser inside.

After machining is completed, these risers are ready for the polishing and anodizing process. This is done at another facility in California.

In a separate “clean room” portion of the factory, limbs are constructed. Ev-ery pair of Hoyt limbs starts as a single piece of matched materials ensuring limb synchronization, and remains as a pair through the entire process. The limb construction methods are a closely kept secret, but computer con-trolled equipment is used extensively. Here we see limbs ready for final paint inspection.

Chez Hoyt chaque paire de branches est d’abord taillée dans une seule pièce de ma-tériaux assortis assurant la synchronisation de la branche, qui reste en paire à travers tout le processus. Les méthodes de construction de la branche sont gardées secrètes ; on recourt beaucoup à un équipement contrôlé par informati-que. Nous voyons ici des branches prêtes pour la dernière vérification de la peinture.


La fierté de Hoyt de ses nombreuses années de succès en compétition est exprimée sur ce mur, à l’extérieur du bu-reau du président de Hoyt, Randy Walk. Beaucoup d’arcs uniques sont exposés sur ce mur. Parmi eux, le premier arc créé par Doug Easton dans les années 1920, un arc utilisé par le champion olympique 1972 John Williams, un arc avec lequel Darrell Pace a remporté la médaille d’or des Jeux Olympiques en 1976, un arc utilisé par Jay Barrs aux Jeux Olympiques de 1988, un arc utilisé par Justin Huish aux Jeux

Hoyt’s pride in their many years of competition success can be seen on this wall, outside the office of Hoyt President Randy Walk. Many special bows are on this wall, including the first bow made by Doug Easton in the 1920’s, a bow used by 1972 Olympic Champion John Williams, a bow used by Darrell Pace to win the 1976 Olympic Games, a bow used by Jay Barrs in the 1988 Olympics, a bow used by Justin Huish in the 1996 Olympic Games, and even a US Flag color Axis used by President Bill Clinton.
