Everyone has a job in their career journey where they find their feet. Outgoing was mine. I was thrown head first into racing around the country, meeting different stakeholders every day and working with them to create the perfect student event. When the sales season ended, I asked to be put in charge of the events staff who until then, had no particular line manager. After 6 months, I was commandeered by the Events Team and became assistant to the Head Event Manager. It was a wonderful experience and the beginning of my events career.

Est 50’000 people walk down The Royal Mile or across The Mound during event. Circus acts, street performers, magic, arts & crafts stalls and music brings the city alive. Chosen from 500 applicants, I and 29 other individu-als worked tirelessly to keep those open air venues running on time, safely and to an incredibly high standard. Our particular team covered everything from liaising with Council & Emergency Services, managing the weird and wonderful acts, providing on site Advanced First Aid, right up to the end of the shift where we perform litter picking duties (everyone has to do it!). I worked with a world class team who had a ridiculous amount of experience that I gratefully learnt from.

PORTLAND HOUSE, CARDIFF BAY May 2014- Temporary ContractEvent ManagerJob Growth Wales Scheme
The opportunity arose to support a company setting up a new events venue in Cardiff Bay. The experience tested my acquired knowledge as the venue is at such a vulnerable stage. As well as supporting the Marketing Manager to re-brand the venue, I also implemented an enquiries and event timeline procedure, put together a preferred supplier list and ran a recruitment drive to produce a pool of event staff.
The venue has demanded all of my time (including weekends) and all of my attention. But, it has confirmed my approach to work and flexibility- a 9-5 role is just not for me.

This role demands 100% loyalty, efficiency, creativeness and drive. It needs somebody who can manage themselves, who has an eye for opportunity and can happily build relationships with a range of different key stakeholders.
What I have is sheer determination and a lot of curiosity and creativity. I’m just a few chapters in to my career and yet it feels like I have been in the industry for years. Events are tiring, problematic, complicated and consume you from the word go. But when you’re working for an organisation whose cause is so important to everyone around you, you understand why YOU are so important to that cause.
It is a goal of mine to work for Cancer Research UK. If my CV hasn’t intrigued you, then no problem, maybe not this time. Back to the drawing board and scouring the Career portal for other opportunities to join you!In the meantime, if you have printed out the document, please don’t throw it away. Recycle it. Or at least have a go at the snazzy Crab Origami below.
Keep up the inspiring work!
