Hello Year 6, My name is Mrs White and I’m the Head of Art at The Hayfield School. I hope you are all keeping well and are looking forward to becoming a creative artistic pupil. I would like you to try your best on this project but don’t worry because you’re the artist and we are all very different.

The project is called The Symbolic Self Portrait because it should represent everything about you.

In this project I want you to be as imaginative and as creative as

you can be, let go, don’t hold back with colour and drawings that

make you shine. This work should represent you and when anyone looks at it they should be able to see what you like to do e.g. playing games, what your favourite objects are or sport. Do you have any pets? Do you have any talents or hobbies? Do you collect anything special? Or do you enjoy a particular subject?

It should be all about you!

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: • The project should take a minimum of 5 hours but time can vary depending on how much detail you put in. • The project has 2 parts knowledge (artist research) and a final creative piece.

PART ONE LEARNING OBJECTIVE 1: KNOWLEDGE (Artist Research) 1. To know the work of Giuseppe Arcimboldo 2. To understand how and why he creates portraits in this style. SUCCESS CRITERIA: All pupils • I will be able to recognise the work of Giuseppe Arcimboldo • I will understand that he arranged objects to create a face in different ways. • I will know why he choose different objects for different people. Most pupils: • I will start to see the similarity in the shape of the object compared with the shape of the

face. • I will be able to create a similar portrait using the web page given or using cut-outs from

magazines of objects. If you don’t have magazines or a computer then draw yourself made up of objects.

Some Pupils: • I will be able to create a picture similar to the Artist but I will select objects that symbolise the

person e.g. I like fruit and vegetables. More planning and time has been spent on the detail.

The tasks are colour coded with green

been the easiest, then red and purple been

the most challenging.

TASK 1 What Is Symbolism? What do you think of when you see a heart? When most people see a heart, they think of 'love'. Hearts are all over Valentine's Day cards, and they're often used to replace the word 'love' when people write 'I love you'. Why do people think of 'love' any time they see a heart? It's because of symbolism. Watch this clip on You Tube:

What is self portraiture? It is when an artist creates a representation (drawing) of themselves e.g. they look in a mirror and draw (realistic) or they draw what they see inside like emotions, feelings and symbols (imaginary)

Van Gogh Painted himself realistically but with emotion because of the colours and patterns he choose.

Example 3 If you’re a computer whiz you might want to put images together on power point or other software.

Whatever you create it’s important it comes from you. I want to see you be imaginative. My examples are meant to be a guide. Enjoyment is far more important!
