  • Now that Denmark had been defeated, and Christiansarmyknockedoutofthewar,HabsburgforceswerefreetoroamalongtheBalticcoastline.ThisdevelopmentgreatlyalarmedGustavusAdolphuswholedSwedenintotheWarin 1630. Having made some key alliances with severalProtestant states such as Hesse-Cassel, Pomerania andStralsund,theSwedishkinginvadednorthernGermany.InthefollowingyearGustavusdrewuptheTreatyofBrwaldwith France which ensured French funding to maintainaSwedisharmy inGermany.AnarmythatwouldopposetheforcesoftheEmperor.Althoughthesesubsidieswerecoming from a Catholic country to pay for a Protestantarmy, the Habsburgs had been long time rivals of theFrenchcourt.

    However,thearrivalofSwedishtroopsonGermansoilwasnot universally welcomed by all of the German states,SaxonyandBrandenburginitiallyremainedneutral-untilTillystroopssackedanddestroyedthecityofMagdeburg.Andthenin1631theProtestantarmiesenjoyedtheirfirstvictorywhenaSwedishandSaxonarmydefeatedTillyatthe Battle of Breitenfeld.After this decisive battle the

    EmpirewasatthemercyofthevictoriousSwedisharmy,andwithfewoptionsopentohim,theEmperorwasforcedtoreinstateWallenstein.

    Meanwhile,GustavusbegancampaigningintheRhinelandandthenmovedhisarmyintoBavaria(violatingtheTreatyofBrwaldatthesametime).ThismovewasopposedbyTillyin1632atthebattleofLeck,wherehewasmortallywounded, however, Wallenstein did manage to checktheSwedishadvanceatNuremberg.Later thatyearsawanothermajor clash, this time at the Battle of Ltzen.TheSwedesmanagedtowinthebitterlyfoughtbattle,butitcostthemtheir leader-GustavusAdolphus.ThekingsdeathgreatlyweakendtheSwedishwareffortanditwaslefttotheSwedishChancellor,Oxenstiernatoorganiseanumber of German Protestant states into the League ofHeilbronnin1633,tocontinuethefightagainsttheEmpire.However,thisforcewasshatteredbyacombinedSpanish,ImperialistandBavarianarmyattheBattleofNrdlingenin1634.Afterthis,SwedensGermanalliesbegantodropoutofthewarandforthemoment,theSwedishoffensivegroundtoahalt.

    Catholic League/Imperial ArmiesWhencomparedtothearmiesthatfoughtinpreviouscampaigns,theImperialandCatholicLeaguearmiesof1630-31werelittlechanged,therewasstilltherelianceonmassivesquaresofveteraninfantryandsturdyblocksofcuirassier.However,afterthedefeatatBreitenfeld,WallensteinsoughttoreorganisethecatholicforcestodealwiththemoreflexibleSwedisharmy.InfantryformationswerereducedinsizeanddepthresultingintheLaterTercioformationandheavycavalrywereorderednottousethecaracoleandarenowreclassifiedastrotters.

    InfantryLaterterciosarethreefiguredepthunitsthatcanhaveabattaliongunattached.Firepowercanbefurtherincreasedbyreplacingthefrontrankofpikemenwithshot-thiswouldmeanthatathreefiguredepthunitwouldonlyhavetworanksofpike.

    CavalryTheheavycavalryunits(Cuirassier&Horse)alsofoundtheirdepthreducedandtacticschangedtotrotter.Theseunitswillnowhaveaonefiguredepth.Arquebusunitsweretoretaintheirpreviousorganisationandcaracoletactics.

  • The Swedish ArmyThebasicunitformationsoftheSwedisharmyareshownintheFather Tilly rulesbutinthissectionwewillbetakingamoredetailedlookatthetacticsemployedandtherulesweneedtoemploytoaccommodatethem.

    ArtilleryThiswouldusuallybeplacedinoneortwopowerfulbatteriesinacentralpositioninfrontoftheinfantry.Theinfantryunitsthatoccupiedthefirstlinewouldbeequippedwithbattalionguns,butnottheinfantryinthesecondline.Battaliongunsweresometimesdetachedfromtheinfantrytoformlightgunbatteries.

    Cavalry

    HorsesThefirstthingtosayaboutthecavalrywasthatitwasratherpoorlymountedwhencomparedtootherEuropeancavalry.However,aftertheBattleofBreitenfeld,thearmyhadaccesstobettermountsandthequalityoftheSwedishhorseimproved.HowthisisreflectedintherulesisthatallSwedish,orGermanhorsewillnotgainachargebonustodamageincombat(i.e.theywillonly inflictakill resultona4+ratherthantheusual3+).AfterBreitenfeld,thispenalty isremoved.

    ArmourMostcavalrywillcountashavingnoarmour,theSwedishkingpreferredgreatermobilityoverprotection.However,somehorseunitscanstillbeconsideredarmouredandtherewereevencuirassiers-theLivonianAderkasregiment-whichcountsasheavilyarmoured.Forthosehorseunitsthatdonotweararmour,mobilitywillbeimprovedinthefollowingway-playersthatrollaoneortwowithmovementdicecanchoosetoignorethescoreandapplyanother(max.six).Also,cavalrycanbreakcontactwithoutamoraletestifnokillswereinflictedinthatroundofcombatandcanevendosoifkillswereinflicted-althoughthisdoesrequireamoraletest.Theseimprovementsonlyapplytohorsethatarenotwearingarmour.

    TacticsThehorseemploytrottertacticsmeaningthattheyfiretheirpistols(hopefullyattheenemy)beforetheymakecontactatasteadytrot.Shortapproachestotheenemywerepreferredandsoanycontactthatismadefromaunitthatdidnotmoveinthepreviousturndoesnotrequireachargetest.Iftheunitdidmoveinthepreviousturn,forexampleitmovedtowardstheenemyorbrokecontact-achargetestisrequired(achargetestwillalwaysberequirediftheunitisdisorderedorhaslostafigure-whetheritmovedpreviouslyornot).

    Finnishcavalryareclassedasgallopers,thismeansthattheydonotrequireachargetesttomakecontactwiththeirenemy, in factall theyneedtodo ismove intocontactduring themovementphase, if thedistancethat theyhavemovedissufficienttobringthemintocontactwiththetarget.Finnishcavalrymovesstraightintocontactwithoutanypreliminaryfiring.Iftheattackmoveisinastraightlinetheygainthebonustodamage(3+toinflictakill),iftheunitwheeledorturnedintocontact-theydont(4+tokill).

    Acrucial element to the successof thecavalry is the support from infantrydetachments,without them the lighterSwedishcavalrywouldhavelittlehopeagainsttheheavierCatholichorse.Playersthattakeaquicklookatthearmylists,notethattheyhaveveterancavalryandhurlthemintothenearestcuirassregimentaregoingtobeverydisappointed.Swedishcavalryisgoodbutithastobeusedcarefully.Onemovementbaseofshot(fourfigures)canbeplacedbetweencavalryregiments-usuallyonlyinthefirstlineofcavalry.

    Cavalrytendedtobedeployedintwolinesoneitherflankoftheinfantryandbehindthefirstlineofinfantryofferingclosesupport.Thefirstandsecondlineswouldbeseparatedbyabouttwohundredyardswithshotdetachmentssupportingthefrontlinecavalry.Asmallcavalryreservewouldoftenbeheldbackinacentralposition.

    InfantryOrganisationTheusualdeploymentforSwedishinfantrywasinthreeregimentbrigades,withthecentralregimentinadvanceofthetwoflankingregiments.Ifinthefirstlineofthearmy,eachregimentwouldbeequippedwithabattaliongun.Threetofoursuchbrigadeswouldusuallyformthefirstlinewiththesameorslightlylessinthesecondline.Cavalrycouldbeplacedbetweentheselinestoattackdisorderedenemyinfantry.

    MovementEachinfantrybrigaderequiresonlyonecommandactiontocommandittomoveevenifthecomponentregimentsarenotallgoinginthesamedirection(thiswouldusuallyrequireonecommandactionperunit).Thisispermittedaslongastheunitisnomorethanfourinchesfromanotherunitinthebrigade.Ifthedistanceexceedsfourinchestheunitwillhavetobecommandedseparately.Whentestingtomoveabrigade,1d6isrolledformovementforeachunitinthebrigade-andthebestresultistaken.Forexample,athreeregimentbrigadeismovingforward,3d6arerolledandascoreof1,3and5aretheresult.Theplayercanchooseeitherofthesenumberstoaddtothebasicmove.

    WeaponryTheinfantryoftheSwedisharmywasequippedwithlightermusketsthatdidnotrequiretheuseofarest.Thislighterweaponhadahigherrateoffirebutmarginally less impact,and inthehandsofexperiencedtroopscoulddeliveradevastatingbarrage.Infantryequippedwiththisweaponcanfiretheirfrontrankfigurestwiceinsteadoftheusualonce.Ifthefiringunitisofregulargrade(orworse)theywillnotbenefitfromafirst-firebonus-iftheyareveterangrade(orbetter)theywill!

    Shot DetachmentsThesearefourfiguremusketunitsthatareplacedinbetweencavalryregiments.Theywilldeliverfirebeforethecavalrycharges(afterthechargedeclarationbutbeforecontactismade)andwillalsogivecoveringfireifthecavalryisattacked-theshotwillfireatunitsattackingthecavalrythattheyaresupporting-duringtheopponentsturn.Forexample,anImperialCuirassierregimentattacksaSwedishhorseregiment.TheImperialplayerdeclaresachargeandthenmovestheunitintocontact,theSwedishplayerfiresalleligiblefiguresattheattackersbeforetheymakecontact.Anyshotdetachmentsthatarenotdisorderedbutarewithinshortrange(andarcoffire),willbeabletofireontheattackingunit.Thenumberoffiguresthatcanfiredoesnotneedtobetestedfor-theywillallfire(plustheextrashotsforthelighterweapon).

    CasualtiesDamageinflictedonbrigadeswillbeappliedtothenearestunitinthebrigade.Whencomparingthenumberoffigureslost to the starting strengthof theunit, count all thefigures in thebrigade rather than just those in theunit.     Tilly, the Catholic League commander had also beenawaiting reinforcements but Pappenheim recommendedimmediatebattle,heconsideredtheSaxonstobearabbleandtheSwedesnotstrongenoughontheirowntowithstandthemightoftheLeague.TillywasnotpersuadedbutonareconnaissancemissionPappenheimestablishedcontactwiththeSwedisharmyandsentanalarmingmessagebacktosaythathewasnowtooheavilyengagedtowithdrawsafely.UnlessTillybackedhisgeneralupwiththewholearmy-allwouldbelost!Notwishingtoabandonhismen,TillyadvancedthearmytoBreitenfeld-onlytofindtheSwedish armywas still someway off - Pappenheim hadexaggeratedthesituationtolurehisleaderintoafightwiththeSwedes.AlthoughtheSwedisharmywasatadistanceitwasnowtoolatetowithdraw-atleastPappenheimhadchosenadecentplaceforabattle.Imperial CommandField Marshal Pappenheim commanded the left wing ofTillysarmyandfacedtheformidableGustavusAdolphuswho,although inoverall commandof theSwedisharmy,had placed himself on right flank.     The BattleAt about two in the afternoon, Pappenheim ordered hiscommandforward.AsthecuirassapproachedtheSwedishline the arquebusiers gave fire - in preparation for theheavycavalriesattack,butitwasonlywhentheImperialsapproachedtocloserangethattheSwedesreturnedfire.Withovereight-hundredmusketsfiringinasinglevolley,the Imperial line becamedisordered and units began tofallback.

    Pappenheim quickly responded by moving the HolsteininfantryregimentandhisarquebusierstocoverthefrontwhileheregroupedandrepositionedhiscavalryroundtheflankoftheSwedes.InanswertothismoveGustavusbenttherightflankofhisfirstlinebackandbegantoextendhislinewithunitsfromtherear.PappenheimagainlaunchedhiscavalryattheSwedishline.

    Inall,itissaidthatPappenheimlaunchedsevenattacks,buttheSwedishkingmanagedtocontinuetoextendhisline and plug any gaps that opened up.After two houroffighting,theImperialshadfailedtobreakthroughandPappenheims troops were now exhausted and totallydisorganised.Atthispoint,Gustavuslaunchedhiscounter-attackwith fresh troops - the Imperials gaveway - andtheHolsteinTerciobecameanislandinatideofSwedishcavalry,adecisivemomentintheBattleofBreitenfeld.

    Playing the GameThisscenariopresentsanexcellentopportunitytotryoutthe different tactics used by the Imperials and Swedes.

    Swedishplayersmaybetemptedto launchtheircavalryinaferociouschargeagainsttheapproachingcuirass,butplayersshouldrememberthatthisisnotwhatGustavusdidandthereisareasonforthat-theImperialCuirasswillbeabletowithstandthatcharge.Sodespitehavingexcellentattackingcavalry,theSwedishplayerhastousetheminacontrolledway-thecavalrymustbesupportedbytheshot. Only when the infantry and cavalry are combinedhavetheyahopeofresistingtheheavyImperialcavalry.

    AlthoughtheImperialcavalryreliedmainlyonthecaracoletactic, thiswas of course only a prelude to the cavalrycharge, andwith somuch supporting shot, the Imperialplayer cannot spend too much time softening up theiropponent with preparatory shooting - theymust chargehomeassoonaspossible.Thiswillbetheheavycavalriesbestchanceiftheyaretoavoidtoomanycasualtiesbeforetheymakecontact.

    BackgroundOver a year after Breitenfeld, with Tilly now dead andWallensteininhisplacetheSwedisharmyappearedtobepreparingtoseeoutthewinterinNaumburg.AsGustavusbegan to circle the town with earthworks, WallensteinassumedthattheSwedisharmywastakingup itswinterquartersandsotheImperialcommandergaveordersforhis army todisperse into separate corps towait for thenextcampaignseason.

    However,onthe15NovembertheSwedishkingmarchedoutofcampandledhisarmytowardsLeipzig.Surprisedbythismove,Wallensteinhadtogatherhisscatteredforces,therewasdefinitelyanotherturnleftinthisyearsgame!

    Wallensteins first move was to quickly dispatch a smallforceofCroatsandinfantrytooccupytheSwedes,hopingtobuyenoughtoallowhimtoreformhisarmy.ThissmallforcefoughtwellandbroughtWallensteinenoughtimetoselectLtzenasagoodspotforadefensivebattle.

    The ScenarioLtzenisanotherepicThirtyYearsWarbattleandonethatwillnotbetackledinitsentiretyhere.Ratherthisscenariodealswithone crucial part of thebattle -when victoryhunginthebalance,andwhentheSwedishkinginvolvedhimself directly in thefighting.Realising that his attackwasbecomingdisorderedandfearingaCatholiccounter-attack, theKing gathered up a force of cavalry and ledthem in a furious charge hoping to swing the initiativeback inhis favour,however, the fogthathadsmotheredthe early stages of the fighting and then receded onceagainreturned-andthekingdisappearedfromview.

    Thisscenariosetsouttorecreatetheconfusionanddisorderthatsurroundedthedeathoftheking.TheSwedishplayerhasasmallstartingforceandthenatrandompointsduringthegamewillbereinforedbyrandomunitsastheyblunderaboutthefog-boundbattlefield.TheImperialplayerwillalso start with a small force, one that has accidentallydiscoveredtheSwedishking.This forcewillalsoreceiverandomreinforcementsduringthegame.

    TheSwedishplanwastopositionthearmyinawaythatwouldthreatenthebesiegerssupplyroutetotheDanubewhilst launchingattacks todrive them from theancientwallsofthetown.

    The BattleHornlaunchedtheRantzauandScotsbrigadesuptheslopefirst.Althoughinitiallycoveredbythewoods,theleadinginfantry had to cross open ground as they approachedthe Spanish defences, and here they suffered from thedefenders fire. However, the attackers did contact thedefenders and drove them from their positions. As theattacking Scots and German infantry surged into theabandonedworks theybecamedisorderedand itwas atthis point that Leganes unleashed his veteran infantry -theattackerswerequicklydrivenbackdownthehill.

    It was time for Horn to order the second wave of theattack,andthenexttwobrigadesmadetheirwayupthe

    hill.Thisattackwasconductedwith far lessenthusiasmandfailedtobreachtheSpanishdefences.

    As the afternoonwore on,Horn reorganised his veteranScotsandGerman infantryandsent themoncemoreupthe hill.Again and again he launched attacks thatweredrivenbackbyfirefromtheearthworksandwereharriedby enemy cavalry. Finally, as the battle began to turnagainsttheSwedeselsewhere,Horngaveuphisattack.
