Lorraine Sebastian-FrancoisVP Academic Quality@LSU_VPAQHey all, Happy New Year to ya! I personally love the new year because it’s a chance for me to look at all the things I have achieved over the previous year and how I can improve them for the next. With that in mind, I would like to improve on the work I have been carrying out surrounding diversity and I want to broaden it to all protected groups. We have a diversity week coming up so if any students want to get involved please get in contact with me.

Josh McDowellVP Activities@LSU_VPAI am really looking forward to getting stuck into this years Varsity! Since coming back I have been looking closely into it and what we can offer to make it the best Varsity ever! This is part of my objectives and I have started meeting up with the University of Liverpool to get the ball rolling. I want this year’s Varsity to be more accessible to students and I want more people to get involved; whether that is through participating on the day, spectating or helping out. Watch out for news on this, because I’m hoping for some big things, and of course, we WILL be winning this year!

Dan ColeVP Community@LSU_VPCThis month we launched our Rate Your Landlord survey, giving you the chance to tell us about your accommodation, rating it on key aspects such as quality, security and value for money. This years survey runs until March 31st and there’s a £100 prize on offer each month. Cost and convenience of travel for students across Liverpool is another area that I’m working on. We’ve already made good progress, especially for IM Marsh students, but I'm looking at how all students can be supported. We’re holding a focus group at Merseytravel Headquarters in February, and we’re looking for 6 students from LJMU, UOL and Liverpool Hope to come up with their top 10 asks, that we’ll then present to Merseytravel.

Rate Your Landlord SurveyUntil March 31st

Rate Your Landlord is our annual survey where we celebrate the best of Liverpool’s landlords, letting agents and halls. We’re now in our fifth year of the survey and it has grown massively. Last year we received 3,267 responses which is the most we’ve ever received. This year we’re expecting more! As part of Rate Your Landlord, we ask students about every aspect of their property. We ask was it as advertised when moving in? How much did you pay? And what are the quality of repairs to the property? The results of Rate Your Landlord are great for both students and landlords as it holds landlords accountable and drives change in the property market across Liverpool, whilst giving students a helpful guide in choosing their next property. We also have monthly £100 prizes to award to students who complete the survey and some landlords are awarding their own prizes, so check out LiverpoolSU.com for more details!

Mowgli By Lois Frost

Liverpool as a city is host to some great places to eat, and it’s always exciting when there is a new addition. I recently went to Mowgli; a new Indian street food restaurant on Bold Street, which couldn't be a more fitting location. I ordered an exotic cocktail at the bar (I had a 'sweet Delhi diazepam' - It was delicious). The decor is completely fitting to the theme of the restaurant and has a relaxed vibe that's always appreciated when going out for food. The service was fast and friendly and the waiting staff are willing to chat and talk through the menu. Once all of our food had arrived, there was hardly any room to move - more down to greed than the size of the tables! The tapas dishes range in price from £3 - £8.50. However, there are larger meals available. I think that all the food is very reasonably priced, it's just a shame that they don't do student discount. Overall, I really enjoyed my experience at Mowgli, it's a great place to relax, enjoy a meal and a catch up with friends!

The Hobbit TrilogyBy Shani Vizma

As much as some of us try to persuade ourselves we don’t like tales of mystical creatures and fantasy, there’s no denying we were all entertained by The Hobbit trilogy at least once. What’s not to love about interspecies relationships and epic battles right?Personally, a theme that stands out is the comradery. After so many lone wolf hero films like Taken or every Bond film; it’s refreshing to see a diverse group of people battling it out together. When watching the film it definitely gives a positive message in terms of friendship, we may all sometimes feel like a Bilbo Baggins and we don’t fit in with our group and think that our friends are somewhat superior to us. However, we can never stop being who we are and deny the skills we have, so embrace them! As you may end up saving the day!

PattersonsBy Ed Fairweather

Located on Parr street opposite the much loved home of both Cream and Medication; you could be forgiven for missing one of Liverpools newest, hidden gems. Far too often now, the promise of food and cocktails together brings with it a feeling of unease; worrying that a visit may include an elongated conversation about ‘vibes,’ and how, ‘the city just isn’t the same anymore.’Patterson’s is too laid back for that and delivers a service much needed and wanted in Liverpool. The venue is lavishly adorned with skateboards, Beatles memorabilia and musical instruments, with a relaxed feeling far removed from the pretentiousness that some establishments exude. Local graffiti artist, Andy Prior has put his stamp on the place with some great graffiti! The music has a slightly different feel to the usual; with a hip hop playlist punctuated with tunes that will take you back to your Tony Hawks playlists. If you find yourself thinking “I need more Beastie Boys on my iPod” then Patterson’s won’t disappoint. Here, there are half measures but only when regarding to the minimum ½ kilo of chicken available; which can be upgraded to the full kilo. Sides of gravy and sweet potato fries can be added to the order which all comes served in metal mess tins! We’d like to say the food’s finger licking good but we’re sure that’s been done. Student friendly? Yes! Offers run all the time, with £2 bottles of beer always available and food currently at 50% for those in possession of a student card! Our server Wes summed it up for us: “It’s the perfect place for a get together with a group of mates, kick back and chill eating chicken while sippin’ Blue ribbon.” He‘s also a poet, in case you didn’t know!

So here’s the deal; we have a kg of chicken and a portion of chips up for grabs as a prize. Tweet us @LiverpoolSU with the #SUpperdate and why you deserve to win. Winners will be selected by our Sabbs

and announced to brighten up someone’s Friday 13th (February!)
