Fourth Sunday: Clergy Discretionary Fund (for clergy use to help those in need)

It all begins here, again. Today is Palm Sunday. It is as if during the season of Lent we have been wandering around, outside the gates of Jerusalem and today, literally, we cross the threshold into Holy Week. Something significant changes, if we are paying attention. Today, we begin outside (weather permitting) with a festal, carnival atmosphere. Palms waving, we parade down the street crying Hosanna! Suddenly, the mood changes as we discover “king” in the Kingdom of God means something different than we are used to.

The Liturgy of the Palms

When circumstances permit, the congregation may gather at a place apart from the church, so that all may go into the

church in procession.

The branches of palm or of other trees or shrubs to be carried in the procession may be distributed to the people before the service, or after the prayer of blessing.

The following or some other suitable anthem is sung or said, the people standing

Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord. Peace in heaven and glory in the highest.

Celebrant Let us pray.

Assist us mercifully with your help, O Lord God of our salvation, that we may enter with joy upon the contemplation of those mighty acts, whereby you have given us life and immortality; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Here a Deacon or other person appointed reads the following

Matthew 11:1-11a

When they were approaching Jerusalem, at Bethphage and Bethany, near the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples and said to them, “Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately as you enter it, you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden; untie it and bring it. If anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ just say this, ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here immediately.’” They went away and found a colt tied near a door, outside in the street. As they were untying it, some of the bystanders said to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?” They told them what Jesus had said; and they allowed them to take it. Then they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it; and he sat on it. Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut in the fields. Then those who went ahead and those who followed were shouting,

“Hosanna!

Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!

Blessed is the coming kingdom of our ancestor David!

Hosanna in the highest heaven!”

Then he entered Jerusalem and went into the temple; and when he had looked around at everything, as it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the twelve.

The Celebrant then says the following blessing

The Lord be with you.

People And also with you. Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give him thanks and praise.

It is right to praise you, Almighty God, for the acts of love by which you have redeemed us through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. On this day he entered the holy city of Jerusalem in triumph, and was proclaimed as King of kings by those who spread their garments and branches of palm along his way. Let these branches be for us signs of his victory, and grant that we who bear them in his name may ever hail him as our King, and follow him in the way that leads to eternal life; who lives and reigns in glory with you and the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.

The following or some other suitable anthem may then be sung or said

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

The Procession

Psalm 118 The Mercies Of God Endure OOS 349

That we may dance with one another, enemies and friends; and that gratitude may dwell in every human

being’s heart

Sing praises. We give thanks for the mercies of God.

Let us give thanks for the goodness of God, let the people of old shout their joy. Let the children yet unborn hear its sound, the harmony of a people of praise.

Pause

Open for us the gates of the city, the city of harmony and peace. Together, restored, we enter them, singing our songs of thanksgiving.

Sing praises. We give thanks for the mercies of God.

The stone which the builder rejected has become the head of the corner. The very ones we despised are known as your specially beloved.

Pause

This is the festival day, the day you made for our joy. We shall be glad and rejoice, feasting with laughter and song.

Sing praises. We give thanks for the mercies of God.

Blessed are those who have journeyed in your name: the light of our God has guided them. They join the throng in the places of praise. Indeed you are God: we adore you.

Pause

May we not be stingy in our gratitude or grudging in our praise, loosen our stiff bodies to be elated and joyful. Let us dance with delight and see the sparkle in the eyes of God

Sing praises. We give thanks for the mercies of God. The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray.

Almighty God, whose most dear Son went not up to joy but first he suffered pain, and entered not into glory before he was crucified: Mercifully grant that we, walking in the way of the cross, may find it none other than the way of life and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The procession continues to the theatre.

The Word of God Processional All Glory Laud and Honor Hymnal 154

The Collect of the Day

The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray.

Almighty and everliving God, in your tender love for the human race you sent your Son our Savior Jesus Christ to take upon him our nature, and to suffer death upon the cross, giving us the example of his great humility: Mercifully grant that we may walk in the way of his suffering, and also share in his resurrection; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

First Reading Isaiah 50:4-9a

A reading from the book of Isaiah

The Lord GOD has given me the tongue of a teacher, that I may know how to sustain the weary with a word. Morning by morning he wakens - wakens my ear to listen as those who are taught. The Lord GOD has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious, I did not turn backward. I gave my back to those who struck me, and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard; I did not hide my face from insult and spitting. The Lord GOD helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my

face like flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame; he who vindicates me is near. Who will contend with me? Let us stand up together. Who are my adversaries? Let them confront me. It is the Lord GOD who helps me; who will declare me guilty?

The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God Psalm 31 A Prayer For Deliverance OOS 116 In solidarity with those who are grieving, those who are overburdened, those who are burnt out, those

who are worn down.

Cantor sings refrain once then cantor and people repeat refrain

Lector

Have mercy on me, O God for I am distressed and in pain: no one hears the cry of my loneliness. My eyes have become dimmed with grief, the whole of me, body and soul.

Pause

My life is worn away with sorrow, and my ears with mourning. My strength fails me because of my affliction, and my bones are wasting away.

Cantor and people

Lector

I am the scorn of my enemies, and a burden to my neighbors. My acquaintances, they are afraid of me, shrinking from my sight.

Pause

I am clean forgotten, like a dead man out of mind. I have become like a broken vessel. For I hear the conspiring of many, the whispering of threats on every side, as they plot to take away my life.

Cantor and people

Lector

The hope of my days is in your hands: I trust you my God, Thou that art Thou. Deliver me from the power of my enemies, from the grip of those who persecute me. Show your servant the light of your countenance and save me in your steadfast love.

Pause

Let me not be confounded, O God, for I have called upon your name.1

The Second Reading Philippians 2:5-11

A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Philippians. Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death--even death on a cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God

The Holy Communion Eucharistic Prayer 1 Enriching Our Worship 57

The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give our thanks and praise. Celebrant It is truly right, and good and joyful, to give you thanks, all-holy God, source of life and fountain of mercy. The following Preface may be used at any time.

You have filled us and all creation with your blessing and fed us with your constant love; you have redeemed us in Jesus Christ and knit us into one body. Through your Spirit you replenish us and call us to fullness of life.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

Sanctus Hymnal S 124

The Celebrant continues

Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of the universe and giver of life. You formed us in your own image and called us to dwell in your infinite love. You gave the world into our care that we might be your faithful stewards and show forth your bountiful grace. But we failed to honor your image in one another and in ourselves; we would not see your goodness in the world around us; and so we violated your creation, abused one another, and rejected your love. Yet you never ceased to care for us, and prepared the way of salvation for all people. Through Abraham and Sarah you called us into covenant with you. You delivered us from slavery, sustained us in the wilderness, and raised up prophets to renew your promise of salvation. Then, in the fullness of time, you sent your eternal Word, made mortal flesh in Jesus. Born into the human family, and dwelling among us, he revealed your glory. Giving himself freely to death on the cross, he triumphed over evil, opening the way of freedom and life. At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated. On the night before he died for us, Our Savior Jesus Christ took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his friends, and said: “Take, eat: This is my Body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said: “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Celebrant and People

Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. The Celebrant continues

Remembering his death and resurrection, we now present to you from your creation this bread and this wine. By your Holy Spirit may they be for us the Body and Blood of our Savior Jesus Christ. Grant that we who share these gifts may be filled with the Holy Spirit and live as Christ’s Body in the world. Bring us into the everlasting heritage of your daughters and sons, that with [ ___________ and] all your saints, past, present, and yet to come, we may praise your Name for ever. Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, to you be honor, glory, and praise, for ever and ever. AMEN.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to sing,

Lord’s Prayer Hymnal S119

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom,

and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread

The Celebrant breaks the consecrated bread.

A period of silence is kept.

Then may be sung or said

We want you to know that the Table is not an Episcopal Table or a St. Alban’s Table, but that Jesus Christ is the host. Therefore, you are welcome to receive Communion or be blessed at this Table. Come forward at the direction of the ushers. Receive the bread in the palm of your hand. Proceed to the next available chalice bearer and drink from the cup. If you prefer, you may slightly dip the bread in the cup and consume the elements in that manner. Gluten free wafers are available; please indicate this when the bread is served. If you prefer to receive a blessing instead of Communion, cross your arms over your chest and the Priest will bless you. If you are unable to come to the Communion station, indicate this to the usher and we will be honored to bring Communion to you.

Facing the people, the Celebrant says the following Invitation

The Gifts of God for the People of God.

and may add Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving. Congregation may be seated
