PATTON TEAMS Combination of IMP & Match Point Scoring Patton teams, very popular in parts of Europe and played in the Pachabo and Lederer in England, has some degree of similarity to point-a-board. Normally, you play 4 boards against a pair, and your teammates will be playing against your opponents' team-mates.

    A) The principle of scoring is similar to point-a-board in the first instance, except that it is more common to get 2 points for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss Thus there are 16 points available in the point-a-board element (two for each board). However, the aggregate is also taken into account.

    B) When you score up with IMP scale, you also aggregate the totals of the 8 IMP scores. That aggregate is then turned into victory points with 16 VP scale (8-8) at stake. Thus there are 32 points at stake per match. E.g. you might win three of the four boards on point-a-board scoring, to give you 6 out of 16 points, and achieve a draw in the aggregate scoring, to give you 8 points out of 16, thus giving you a combined 22 points out of the total of 32 available in the match.

Obviously, the tactics are different here once again. You cannot afford to double them into game or go for a large penalty gratuitously. Yet you may well take some risk in trying for overtricks in part score contracts. If the difference between the two scores (i.e. OPEN ROOM AND CLOSED ROOM) is 20 or more points the result is 2-0 or 0-2. With a difference of 0 or 10 points is the result 1-1. After you have calculated the VPs Board by board, it is the time to calculate the net IMP difference between the total match and compare it with a given VP scale: This is quite simple as the IMPs are to be calculated initially as is done in any T4 Duplicate and then compared with the above 16 VP SCALE to get the VP score. The first part VP total + second part VP total is the total VP for the team in that round. Thus the total VPs to be distributed will be 16 (2 VP per board comparison) + 16 (IMP scale diff) = 32 VPs.

A VERY RARE OCCURANCE ONE SUIT SQUEEZE

The bidding went as shown above. East took a long time before passing, giving enough clues that he has points but is not able to take any action over 4]. The contract is doomed on }10 lead, with declarer losing 3 clubs and a spade. But the natural lead on the given bidding is {K. How you play the hand on this lead. Win the {K with Ace in dummy. Take the ]J finesse and continue if not covered. Now play the H6 and let it ride and play the [J to Queen and Ace. Now take out the last trump with Ace and play low spade to Easts King. East can not play the club, which will give a trick to dummy, hence he plays the diamond, which is ruffed in hand and the 3rd spade is played from hand to dummy and the last diamond is ruffed. When you play another trump, the last 3-card position is:

    K75

    Q T6

    AQJ

    943

Now when you play the low club, whatever card is played by West, play low and East has to win perforce and he has to give the 10th trick to declrear. In case, East discards his }J in the hope of not getting end played, then also declarer can overcome this by inserting the }K over }10 by West, now after winning with Ace, East will give a trick to Souths }9. A very rare case of One Suit Squeeze.

The editor randomly chose the closed room Table # 4 of the GOLD event for kibitzing the first round match, between two very balanced sides. Both sides were playing American Standard, with NS playing UDCA and EW playing Standard carding.

NS: MAA SHARDA - Satyabrata Mukherjee Abhijeet Chakraborty

EW: BRIDGE DUNIYA Paresh Gupta Joyjit Sensarma

The line-up in the OPEN room was:

NS: BRIDGE DUNIYA - Sandeep Thakral Vivek Bhand

EW: MAA SHARDA Kamal Naguri AB Chakraborty

The match started with a flat but interesting board, in which both rooms bid the slam.

West first doubled the 1[ overcall and over 2] by East, South doubled (may be 3{ would have been more fruitful) showing his shortness of Hearts. West gave another push to game by bidding 2[ (showing excellent heart support) and finally EW stopped at 3]. South led the [4, which turned out to be a bad lead and declarer won with the [Q and played trump King from dummy won by North with Ace. North shifted to a club to declarers Jack and won by South with }Q. [10 was continued and declarer won with Ace. Declarer now played }A and ruffed a club.. When the }K fell, declarer took the marked heart finesse and discarded his losing spade on the winning club. With one diamond trick to give, declarer made 10 tricks for +170.

In the open room, NS were allowed to play in 4{ making for a 7 IMP gain to Bridgeduniya team.

EW could have bid 3NT after 3] bid by West and it would have been easy. But once West did not bid 3NT and West responded with 4}, West opted for 4[.

North led the H6 and South won with Ace and shifted to his singleton club. West rightly put the Ace and took out 3 rounds of trumps playing [A, [K and [Q in that order and playing a low heart and finessing the ]9, he discarded 2 diamonds on Heart winners and played the }9. North could take that and returned a diamond but declarer finessed and played a low club, ruffed by South but that was all and EW got +620 on the board.

However in open room, South had other ideas. He opened the hand as Ekren 2{ (showing H & S (5-4 min) and ended in playing 2[ doubled. That went five down for -1100 to them and where they may have thought to gain, they lost the board by 10 IMPs.

TOLANI GOLD - RND -1 (MAA SHARDA Vs. BRIDGE DUNIYA )

Bridgeduniya gained an IMP on board 4 by making an overtrick in 3[ contract. They again gained 2 IMPs on board 6 but then disaster struck on next board.

In the closed room, South bid 3[, showing his 4 carder spade support and North took the plunge to 4[. West led the [J to Queen from dummy and [K won by East. Now East led back a club, declarer playing the King to Wests Ace and West continuing with another spade won by declarer in hand and playing the ]A. Suddenly he was a happy man, when ]K fell. Now he simply played the ]10 giving ]Q to east but the diamond return was won by Ace and diamond losers went on hearts.

If East returns the diamond on trick-2 the contract is doomed as declarer has to lose one trick in each suit. In the open room, Nor South nor North took the liberty of showing spade fit and upgrading the hand and stopped at 2[ making 9 tricks for +140. That was a gain of 10 IMPs to Maa Sarada.

The next board was a flat 3NT board, both team bidding and making 9 tricks. But then from nowhere NS had a bout of bad bidding.

Now there was one loser each in heart, diamond & club and now the only hope was spade 3-2 with queen rightly placed. That was not to be and the contract went one down. With the same result in open room, there was no swing on the board and finally Bridgeduniya prevailed over Maa Sarada by 22-20.
