Save a spot for little brother or sister! Reminder to families that have an infant or young toddler that will be joining us in the

near future: Register him/her TODAY in order to secure a spot. Due to limited space in

our Young Toddler and Toddler Classes there is usually a 3-4 month waiting period for a

seat to be made available.

International Festival

April 3rd–12th, 2017

During our International Celebration special emphasis is placed on the study of the

world map and its physical and political geography.

The children are encouraged to bring artifacts/decorations (non-valuable, and clearly

labeled with the child’s name) from different countries for display in the classrooms and

the atrium. For Friday Special Snack on April 7th, parents will be asked to bring

unopened food/snacks from their countries of origin for the children to taste as an

integral part of the study. Your child’s teacher will be contacting you with further

details.

For the culmination of our International Celebration, on April 12th, the children will travel

“around the globe” and as they visit each classroom they will receive a presentation on

one of the seven continents and have their “passport” stamped at each stop. On this

day, the children come to school in the traditional dress of their cultural heritage as a

part of the festivities. All/Extended-day children must bring a change of clothes

and shoes.

This year the projects submitted to the Science Fair were truly amazing, ranging from Botany, Zoology,

Chemistry, and Physics and, the always popular, Astronomy. We would like to congratulate each and every

one of our budding scientists for a job very well done!

Additionally SCMS would like to recognize Lower Elementary for 100% participation and commend

PPIII and PPV for an impressive proportion of student participation.

Raising Children With Love and Positive Discipline

I think one of the greatest gifts we can give our children is a very secure home environment. Your

home must be anchored in consistent parenting behavior. It means creating a structure of daily routine,

firm but fair discipline, and unconditional love and support.

As children get older, it is natural for them to challenge their parents and teachers. At times it

seems easier to just let them have their way, but all children need limits and they need the adults in their

environment to guide them.

Discipline works best with a balance of love, respect, clearly defined rules and understanding. Here

are some of the most effective techniques to positive discipline.

1. Make the rules clear. Parents often underestimate that children have the need for limits and the

ability to find comfort in structured boundaries. The absence of limits may force a child into

unacceptable behavior. The rules and consequences must be negotiated with mutual respect and

understanding and must be followed through. It is easier for children to follow the rules when they

know what to expect. As your youngsters learn to read, write down the rules and display them on a

board or refrigerator as a reminder.

2. Be firm and consistent in your approach. Your children will “test” the rules from time to time.

Being firm and consistent lets the child know that you mean business. Make sure your expectations

are based on your child’s abilities and his/her level of development.

3. Empower your child by giving options and allowing brief negotiation. This helps instill, in the

child, a sense of ownership over one’s behavior and eventually an ability to make healthy decisions

in future.

4. Consequences should be respectful, relevant and age appropriate. Experiencing

consequences is an important part of social learning. Children receive the message more clearly

when the consequence is given with respect (from a place of love and good intention), the

consequence is relevant (directly related to the behavior that prompted the action and without

unnecessary delay) and in an age appropriate manner (keeping in mind the child’s cognitive,

physical and emotional capabilities).

5. Give positive feedback. Focus more on the things your children do right than the things they do

wrong. This will encourage them to try even harder to behave. Try to compliment them when you

see behavior you would like to be repeated.

6. Encourage independence. Children gain confidence by doing things on their own. Show your

young children how to do different tasks by slowly and carefully doing them while they are watching.

The more they do themselves, the more they will be able to do. Self confidence will definitely lead

to self discipline and responsible behavior and high self esteem.

7. Be a good role model. Children need parents’ experience and maturity to guide and direct them to

make responsible choices. The best way to teach children is through your example.

Lalita Trehan ~~~

Mrs. Lalita Trehan has been the guiding light and beating heart of Sugar Creek Montessori School since its inception in 1993. She has been

absorbed in working within the Montessori community for 38 years and got her start in Chicago where she did her Pre-Primary training. She

then continued her Montessori journey as a Directress (Lead Teacher) before beginning her Elementary training at the Houston Montessori

Center. It was then that she founded A.M.S. in 1986. Soon to follow was S.C.M.S (Then Sugar Creek Children’s House), followed by Cambridge

Montessori School in 1996, a second S.C.M.S. campus in Katy, TX in 2007 and a third campus was founded in Fulshear this January. She served

for three terms (9 years) as a Trustee for the Texas Center for Education Research in Austin, TX.

Legacy Tile Wall To create life-long memories for our children and for us, SCMS has a Legacy Tile Wall filled with 6 inch x 6 inch glazed tiles, personalized with children’s art work, name and the year. Each student participant will have the opportunity to design, decorate and name his/her tile in a unique way. The finished, glazed tiles will be mounted on the brick wall just outside the front door as you enter the school. We are asking all our parents to pledge as soon as possible to secure a spot for their child/children as we have less spaces available than the number of children enrolled at present. You may want your older children (SCMS Alumni) to also participate and have a permenant place in our Legacy Tile Wall. Monies raised from this project will be utilized to update our outdoor play area. The order form can be detached from below and returned. It will also be sent home in your child’s Friday folder or you may pick one up at the front desk by April 21

st at which time we will place the order for the tiles.
