The Suffolk County Police
ALUMNI NEWS March 2019
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
You know you are having a good day when you get a chance to see a good bagpipe band
performance. The S.C.P.D. Alumni reunion members and guests were blessed with three
awesome days of Pipe & Drum performances by our own astounding Suffolk County
Police Emerald Society Pipe and Drum Band. The single piper rendition of “Amazing
Grace” at our annual corporate required meeting left not one dry eye in the room. It was
only surpassed by the complete band rendition of this dirge played at the Banquet. We
have numerous pictures and videos which we will get published on a website in the near
future. Hopefully we can get the Band to return for next year’s reunion!
Another pleasant bonus was the attendance by a representative from our the S.C.P.D. P.B.A., Bob
Cappadonna. P.B.A. Liaison Officer Lou Civello had to cancel his previous scheduled appearance due to the
tragic loss of active Fifth Precinct Officer Fadi Rafeh. I can’t tell how much the P.B.A. Presence meant to our
organization. For years, I have listened to members complain that they felt abandoned by their line
organizations. Truth is the P.B.A. has always supported our organization. In fact, the P.B.A. and other line
organizations in the past have made monetary donations and given support to help us lay the foundation on
which we built our organization. We now find ourselves in a position to give back to the P.B.A. with the
support of our members. We have reached the point where we can hopefully be a positive “resource” to our
active members and line organizations. Besides, we are molding a retiree’s organization which, hopefully,
will endure everlastingly alongside the S.C.P.D. P.B.A. To our active duty Brothers and Sisters, be reminded
you will all be joining our ranks someday. We hope to draft some of the pool of your leadership talent in the
P.B.A. and other line organizations for our Association.
Friday’s highlight was an appearance of our own S.C.P.D. Alumni Member Fred Fernez. Fred is ninety years
old, a veteran of the S.C.P.D., and a retired Chief of the Indian Rocks Beach, Florida, Police Department. He
still plays golf two days a week! Fred wrote and was awarded the first Federal Grant for the S.C.P.D. He
wrote many more in his S.C.P.D. career including the grant to set up the Evidence Technicians Unit. He was
accompanied by his son Stephen, who is retired from the local Florida Sheriff’s Department.
Look for Pictures and video’s on our website.
I am pleased to report that the Suffolk County Police Alumni Association is considered one of the most active
and robust police retirement organization in the nation. We represent in excess of 2500 police retirees in
eighteen states. Our website receives in excess of 125 visits every day. We have the ability to update
information within 24 to 48 hours. We also have a link on the new P.B.A. website. Our extremely popular
weekly e-mail bulletin, “Heard It On F-2”, has 1550 subscribers. Our weekly rate of “opened” messages
averages about 65%, which is very high.

VICE PRESIDENT AND MEMBERSHIP REPORT
Hi Everybody.
I hope everyone has a Happy New Year and are safe and well. For you that are up
North - please stay warm.
Reference my meetings with Chief Cameron and Lou Civello of the P.B.A., it has
improved the interactions with the Alumni. I hope it will continue in the future.
Retired Deputy Inspector Doug Rilling, who is now Alumni Board Member on the Island, ran the Alumni
Annual Holiday Luncheon at Majestic Gardens in Rocky Point. I was unable to attend this year. All the
reports I have gotten were good. Doug stated that there were almost no retirees from the west end of the
County. Doug and I will try to find a more central location so more west end retirees will attend. I would
appreciate any suggestions.
It is that time of the year “Dues Are Due”. Thanks to the members that have already sent their dues in, it stops
us from being overwhelmed with paperwork. Please send in your dues with the dues notification form you
received with any changes, especially any changes to your beneficiary. If you have any questions, please call
me at 352-688-8363, e-mail [email protected], or call the Alumni phone number 352-345-1778. Please
print your information and not like you are signing UTT's.
The Alumni held its 2019 reunion this past month with Nassau Blues which is an organization of retired
Nassau County Officers. The Alumni invited the Suffolk County Emerald Society Pipe Band to come and
perform. Twelve members came and performed numerous times with great success. I want to thank Jack and
Cindy Scott, Bob and Barbara Timm and Bob and Mary Sanchez for their work running the reunion.
I have run out of things to write about. I hope everyone stays safe, well, and you up north stay warm. Most
importantly, keep beating the system by getting those checks.
If anyone has a relative down here and you would like some one to check on them, please contact me. I will
attempt to get someone to do it or I will myself.
Fraternally Yours
Ron Aimes

I'm proud to say that I am an alumni of the Highway Patrol Bureau. As a matter of
fact, I started there when it was still Traffic and Safety Bureau. I am planning to
attend the luncheon so – come on fellow HP'ers – make this a luncheon to remember.
Mr.Knipper,
Hello! My name is Anna Bristle and I am the granddaughter of Emanuel Bristle, a member of the
S.C.P.D Alumni Association. I received a letter in the mail that I was selected for a scholarship. I would
like to take this opportunity to say thank you for the scholarship, as it will definitely help me in the
pursuit of my nursing degree at East Carolina University! I am sending my academic transcript in the
mail to the address listed on the award letter.
Thank you,
Anna Bristle

The Board of Directors has created a position of Regional Director to coordinate Alumni member’s activities

assigned to Doug Rilling, Bob Sanchez, Marty Almberg and recently appointed Staff Member Joe Brock. We
are extremely grateful to these members’ dedication to our organization. Look for more information in future

as “Alumni Service Representatives” to provide good and welfare work as needed in their respective areas.
Specific responsibilities, based on member’s availability, includes: contacting members who may need
assistance, visiting those with medical issues, and attending funeral or memorial events. If you can spare
some time to act as an “Alumni Service Representative”, pPlease send your primary contact information
“name & phone” to [email protected]. We will provide additional information upon this “Good &
Welfare” program.
Lee Gelderman (Retired Fourth Precinct) has agreed to act as the Alumni E-Communications Director. His
e-mail contact is [email protected]. Members may direct questions and supply information on
events, good and welfare, “patrol pick up” of information on other members to Lee. Lee will forward the
message to the appropriate staff member for handling.
As always, those without internet access can call the Alumni Duty Desk at 352-345-1778 and can receive a

SCPD Alumni Florida Christmas Luncheon & Show 12/19/2018
The second annual holiday luncheon was a sell out! All comments were very positive. Thanks,
Bob Sanchez, for all the work you did to make this event successful. The pinnacle of the show
was the rendition of “O Holy Night” which brought the house down! Bob is already working
on next year’s luncheon.
Kudos to Artie Alloy and spouse who traveled from South Carolina and Marty and Carol
Almberg who traveled from the east coast to attend. We had a contingent from the 8th Precinct
(The Villages, Florida) which included Bob Prince, Bob Haack, John Colombia & John
McDermott & spouses.
The S.C.P.D. Alumni Queen Roseanne Christie was present along with Carmine Macedonia,
John and Georgia Tscheimber, Lee Gelderman, John Luciano, Everett Thatcher, William
Weiners, Larry Candreva and spouses. We were also delighted to have Maria DiMecelli (Third
Precinct Administration) from St. Augustine Florida.

Alumni Doug Rilling, who was this year's emcee at the
Alumni Holiday Luncheon held at Majestic Gardens in
Rocky Point, stands alongside his two sons at the Crest
Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. His youngest son,
Tom, was given the distinction of being the Nassau
County Police "Overall Top Cop of 2018". His other
son, Bob, is a certified D.R.E. (Drug Recognition Ex-
pert) in our Highway Patrol Bureau. Tom made over
100 arrests for drugs and illegal gun possessions, pulled
a five year old boy who was not breathing from a swim-
ming pool and worked on him until EMS arrived. The
child made a full recovery and Nassau County invited
the boy and his parents to attend the award ceremony. It
was a good ending to a year of dedicated service by two
of Long Island's finest.
