Building RelationshipsBuilding Relationships The CIS department and a local business networking group Professionals Referral Organization (PRO) have
collaborated. Chris Green, a Master of Software Engineering student, currently enrolled in SOF590, will be
working with the leaders of the PRO organization to help them rebuild their website. This is both an excellent
opportunity for Chris to show his stuff and for PRO to revive it’s website. Both Mike Short and Walter Cornett are
ecstatic to be working with Chris and Stratford.
Our campus teamed up with Kroger to help them sell
gourmet strawberries for Valentine’s Day to get our name out in the community.
On Wednesday, February 12th, we had four students join Brittany Joyner and
Adam Hawkins at the Kroger on Atlee Rd to decorate strawberries.
The students had a blast dipping the strawberries in the chocolate
fountain and sprinkling them with all sorts of toppings. They had
creative control over the whole project and assisted in selling over
$1000.00 worth of strawberries in just a few hours!! Thank you so
much to Sara Brannon, Chelsie Barrett, Darling Saunders,
and Michelle Rateau for braving the snow and doing a fabulous
job!

Holi, amongst the most distinct culturally-rooted
festivals of India, evokes the buoyant spirit of the
spring season. No other festival can stir up excitement
among people the way Holi in India can. Well known
for its high-octane celebrations, the Holi festival is
famously associated with colors and water balloons.
Falling in the month of March/April in the Hindu
calendar, the Holi festival celebrates the onset of
spring and renewal. Coming forth with the full flush
of life, the invigorating air of Holi festivities spreads
into the lives of people throughout the year.
Do you know someone
who is looking to change
their life for the better?

When asked why Stratford...
Candelaria: “The flexibility of the program. I’m retired military: I did 23 years, and I currently work in
Washington, D.C. for the Department of Defense, so the flexibility of the night time classes, as well Stratford
accepting my post-9/11 [GI Bill]. Among the schools I looked at, Stratford had the best culinary degree program.”
Duff: “I actually started out at another college in culinary, and then I decided that it wasn’t the path I wanted to
take – that my passion was more in specialty cakes. [My school] didn’t offer that program there, and one of my
instructors recommended Stratford’s program, and knew Chef Petfield. After talking with her, I’m glad I made
the switch. I’ve really enjoyed the program here.”
For the first time in Stratford’s history, Richmond campus culinary arts and baking and pastry students
are completing externships at the Governor’s Mansion. Externships provide valuable experience to students as
they eventually seek to gain employment in the field or open up businesses. Students Jimmy Candelaria, A.A.S.
Advanced Culinary Arts, and Holly Duff, A.A.S. Baking and Pastry Arts, began work before the inauguration.

On February 1st Shelly Pauling and a few of our health science students, Tonisha Craig,
Sierra Hutchinson, Krishanna Freeman, Cachat Jones and Valescia Walker attended
the CBS Healthy Lifestyle expo to assist visitors with blood pressure and glucose checks.
Additionally Brittany Joyner, Jeanne Stern and Melissa Thomas were on hand to answer
questions about our programs while Adam Hawkins prepared samples of the super food salad
Tabouli. Thank you to all of the students that volunteered and made the event a success!
