The Student Success Center at James Madison University provides a collabo-rative, high-impact environment to sup-port student learning, student health and student services. The center is a hub of programs and services helping students become more efficient, effective and engaged learners with space to study, col-laborate and learn. The offices and facili-ties housed in the center provide advice and assistance for a variety of financial, curricular, technical and employment concerns for students.

The Student Success Center is innova-tive, interactive, collaborative and acces-sible. Each office/area gave input on its needs and what was necessary to best serve students. The new space was created for each area’s type of service, work and size, giving each an opportunity to con-tinue its high level of service to students. The spaces within the center are flexible and able to be adjusted with the depart-ment and its future services.

The Student Success Center is a collabo-rative learning environment supported

by academic and student services. The common spaces are furnished to facili-tate individual and group study. There are two group study rooms available to students by reservation on the first floor. The first two floors were designed to support active collaboration and dynamic interactions; the top floors have more quiet spaces for individual study. Reflecting the collaborative philosophy of the building, there is a high degree of transparency in the form of windows, glass and open areas.

epic: enhancing pedagogy through innovative classroomsThe EPIC Center consists of eight agile innovative, technology-enhanced rooms that deliberately defy traditional class-room spaces. In each space, there is no front or back of the room; the instructor and students co-create the pedagogical space that best aligns with the day’s ses-sion. These spaces feature dry erase walls, movable furniture, multiple projection points, and advanced technology. EPIC Center was designed to be a “no-limits” space for faculty to optimize their teach-ing and students’ learning.

EPIC Mission: Be the leader for learning space design.
