Legendary underwater explorer and conservationist, Jacques Cousteau is said to have called the Wakatobi islands – then known as the Tukangbesi islands--an “Underwater Nirvana”Now a National Marine Park covering Waktobi District, it comprises a total of 1.4 million hectares, of which 900,000 hectares are decorated with different, colorful species of tropical flowers and plants. Komodo IslandKomodo Island is the home of the largest (and endangered) lizard on Earth, the Komodo Dragon.The park includes three major islands, Komodo, Rinca and Padar, and numerous smaller islands together totaling 603 square km. The total size of Komodo National Park is 1,817 sq.km. Proposed extensions of 25 sqkm of land (Banta Island) and 479 sqkm of marine waters would bring the total surface area up to 2,321 sqkm.At least 2500 Komodos live in this area. Large dragons are usually three meters long and weigh up to 90 kg. Raja AmpatRaja Ampat or ‘Four Kings’, is the name given to these islands and comes from a local myth.
