CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

This chapter consists of study background, research questions, research

objectives, research significances, and research scope.

A. Study Background

Humans are divided into separate and exclusive biological entities called

races. Racial groups are held together by biological ties, some inherited tendency

to behave in a particular way and prefer a particular language. In accordance with

biological determination, a particular race may consider themselves superior and

this assumption will bring about a very crucial social issue; racism.

Liliweri (2005: 29-30) says racism as an ideology that is based on the idea

that humans can be separated on racial groups; that the group can be separated

based on the degree or hierarchy, based on intelligence or skills, abilities, and

even morality.

Nowadays, people have found some cases that show us there is a racial

injustice among people. Those are caused by race, religious, place of origin.

Racial injustice does not only happen in human’s life but also in animal’s life.

People could be easily find racial injustice in many literary works like in the novel

entitled Zootopia. This novel discusses about racial injustice between two races:

prey and predator. Prey come from a meek animal were discriminated by predator.

Judy Hoops as one of the prey as a little bunny who grew up on a farm of

Judy Hoops which has an ambition of being the first bunny police officer since

she was a kid. Many animals were laughed her. Beside, her parents also disagree

Page 14: THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HERrepositori.uin-alauddin.ac.id/8161/1/ASWIRA.pdf · THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HER AMBITION IN SUZANNE FRANCIS’ ZOOTOPIA A Thesis

2

and said it is impossible, because her great-grandparents just a carrot farmers. So,

she decided to leave her family to pursue her dreams as the first bunny cop in

Zootopia. Hoops makes it through police training and gets assigned to meter maid

duty, to the relief of her carrot farmer and when she moved to Zootopia- a city

where animals live in harmony-where the dream becomes a reality.

Nevertheless, the biggest problem that Hoops need to face is about racial

injustice in pursuing her ambition. She must be fragile or even give up. Although,

it might be hard, but she still with her ambition to continue her life, she cannot

stay in the same place. Eventhough, she must sorrow and seek for that joy since in

fact sorrow exists to show her how sweet happiness is. So, what she need to do is

struggling to through all the difficulties and trying to put her ambition into reality

and have to struggle and survive to win the battle of her lives.

If people think about ambition, people also think about struggling to

survive. Mc. Kechnie (1989) struggle is “a task or goal requiring much effort to

accomplish or achieve”. In other words, people need to show their brave hearts,

endurance and strength to withstand all the opposing and disturbing influences to

gain their goals. Meanwhile, in daily life people deal with complex problems that

have to be accomplished with various strategies. In this case, people are

demanded to hard work to manage their life struggles. In addition, Brockovich

and Eliot (2002) say that people have an inner power that consists of strength,

conviction, and moral empowerment to be who they really are. This power will

force and enable them to struggle with themselves, others, and against

circumstances to overcome their problems.

Page 15: THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HERrepositori.uin-alauddin.ac.id/8161/1/ASWIRA.pdf · THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HER AMBITION IN SUZANNE FRANCIS’ ZOOTOPIA A Thesis

3

From the explanation above the researcher made conclusion that ambition

is an important things, by ambition people can become alive because there is a

goal that people want to achieve that it steers us to be active and enthusiastic. Our

quality will be tested and improved though out the problems. How people face the

reality, how people solve our problems and how people struggle for ambition.

People will face some problems in pursuing our ambition. Although many

problems that people will face, people must struggle because their ambition

cannot reach if people are not struggle to get what they want. In proverb “All our

dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.” - Walt Disney.

Moreover, people can see how Islam allows us for struggle. In Al-qur’an surah

(Ar-Ra’d: 11):

…. ….

Translation :“Verily never will Allah change the condition of a people until they change it themselves” (Yusuf Ali: 11).

Based on the explanation above, the researcher can conclude that if people

have an ambition, people must work hard, because Allah SWT will not change

their condition until people change it. If people are not struggling by ourselves,

people will not get their ambition and people must be seriously in the struggle in

order Allah SWT help them and make it easy in pursue their ambition.

Therefore, this research analyzes about the struggle of Judy Hoops in

pursuing her ambition in Suzanne Francis’Zootopia. After reading this novel the

researcher will examine more deeply about Judy Hoops struggle. No matter how

hard her problems, she always keeps her spirit on struggle and keep the effort to

Page 16: THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HERrepositori.uin-alauddin.ac.id/8161/1/ASWIRA.pdf · THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HER AMBITION IN SUZANNE FRANCIS’ ZOOTOPIA A Thesis

4

get her ambition. This story provides a valuable lesson to the reseacrher that life is

not easy and full of obstacles. The spirit of Judy Hoops in life inspire the

researcher to keep struggle of even in the most difficult situation. This is why the

researcher chooses this novel. It is important to know the racial injustice that Judy

Hoops face and the struggle of Judy Hoops in pursuing her ambition. The

researcher used the sociological approach to know about the social condition in

the novel. Moreover, the researcher uses racism and the struggle theory.

B. Research Questions

Regarding the previous explanation, the researcher formulated the research

questions as follows:

1. What are the racial injustices that Judy Hoops face in pursuing her

ambition in Suzanne Francis’ Zootopia?

2. How does Judy Hoops struggle in pursuing her ambition in Suzanne

Francis’ Zootopia?

C. Research Objectives

Based on the research questions above, the objectives of the research form

are:

1. To describe the racial injustice that Judy Hoops face in pursuing her

ambition in Suzanne Francis’ Zootopia.

2. To analyze the struggleof Judy Hoops in pursuing her ambition in Suzanne

Francis’ Zootopia.

Page 17: THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HERrepositori.uin-alauddin.ac.id/8161/1/ASWIRA.pdf · THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HER AMBITION IN SUZANNE FRANCIS’ ZOOTOPIA A Thesis

D. Research Significances

There are two kinds of significance in this research which are theoretically

and practically. In theoretically, the result of this research is to give a

comprehensive understanding toward knowledge about the struggle of Judy

Hoops in pursuing her ambition in Suzanne Francis’ Zootopia beside, this

research is also useful to be a reference on understanding and analyzing literary

works using racism and the struggle theory. Then, in practically this research will

be expected to motivate other researchers to do other researches in connection

with the struggle for human development in literary work. Furthermore, this

research will encourage readers to support everyone who struggles in pursuing

their ambitions for better life.

E. Research Scope

In this research, the researcher focuses on sociological approach, the

researcher used Paradise, et al theory .(2008: 144-148) suporrted by Liliweri’s

theory (2005) about racial injustice and the struggle theory by and Mc. Kenchnie

(1989) in Suzanne Francis’ Zootopia. In this research the researcher analyzed the

struggles in pursuing ambition conducted by the main character in Suzanne

Francis’ Zootopia, Judy Hoops. The focuses are the racial injustice that Judy

Hoops faces and the struggle of Judy Hoops in pursuing her ambition.

CHAPTER II

LITERATURE REVIEW

This chapter consists of the explanation of theories and terms used in this

research related to the research focus. They are previous findings, pertinent ideas,

contains sociological approach, definition of racism, racial injustice, definition of

struggle, definition of ambition, biography of the novel’s author, and synopsis of

the novel.

A. Previous Findings

Dewi. (2009) in her thesis entitled, The Spirit to Struggle Against Racism

in Amiri Baraka Poems entitled Notes for a Speech and Ka’ba. The writer used

descriptive qualitative research as a method of this study. The writer uses the

theory of racism and compares it with new structuralism theory. Forms of racism

are revealed in the poems are personally-mediated, internalized, and institutional

racism. Black people have been stereotyped and discriminated in all aspects of

their lives. They were also segregated in schools, public facilities, churches,

hospitals, cafes, libraries, elevators, housing, drinking fountains, hotels, etc.

Therefore, Black people struggled to obtain the equal rights as White people so

that they will have the same opportunities of income, wealth and prosperity. They

are struggle for racial pride and struggle for unification through the symbol Ka’ba.

Febrianigsih. (2010) in his thesis entitled, Clare’s Struggle for a Better

Life as Seen in Constance Briscoe’s Ugly. Library study was employed in this

study. Theories of character and characterization were applied to answer the first

problem. Theories of motivation, struggle for life and human basic needs were

6

Page 19: THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HERrepositori.uin-alauddin.ac.id/8161/1/ASWIRA.pdf · THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HER AMBITION IN SUZANNE FRANCIS’ ZOOTOPIA A Thesis

7

used to discuss the second problem. Further, the analysis shows that there are two

reasons that cause Clare to struggle. Firstly, it deals with her terrible family life

caused by her father’s abandonment and her mother abuse. Secondly, it deals with

her dreams. Therefore, Clare carries out some ways to achieve a better life. The

first is working as a shop assistant. The second is working as a cleaning service.

The third is working as a nurse. The last is going to university. In her struggle,

Clare is able to satisfy some of her basic needs.

Putrianti. (2011) in her thesis entitled, An Analysis of Griet’s Struggle for

Life in Tracy Chevalier’s Girl with A Pearl Earring. Library study is applied in

this study. Theories of motivation, struggle for life, and human basic needs are

used to discuss the second problem. Based on the analysis, Griet is portrayed as a

brave, hardworking, quite, careful, tough, smart and artistic. Those characteristics

are revealed through her personal description, characters as seen by others, her

speeches, her reactions, direct comments, her thoughts, and mannerism. Further,

the analysis shows that there are two reasons that cause Griet to struggle. Firstly,

it deals with her terrible family life caused by poverty and financial problems.

Secondly, it deals with her dream. Therefore, Griet carries out some ways to

achieve a better life. The first is working as a maid. The second is working in the

attic to grind and to mix colors. The thirds is being a model of painting. Griet also

applies some categories of adjustment, there are: acceptances to the situation,

problem solving, and self-defense mechanism. In her struggle, Griet is able to

satisfy some of her basic needs.

Page 20: THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HERrepositori.uin-alauddin.ac.id/8161/1/ASWIRA.pdf · THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HER AMBITION IN SUZANNE FRANCIS’ ZOOTOPIA A Thesis

8

In this research there are some similarities and differences. The similarity

of this research between those researches are study about struggle. Then, the

difference of this research between those researches are : the first previous

findings focuses on Amiri Baraka Poems. The second previous finding focuses on

them Constance Briscoe’s Ugly. While, the third prvious finding focuses on Tracy

Chevalier’s Girl with A Pearl Earring. Then, this research focuses on Suzanne

Francis’ novel entitled Zootopia.

B. Pertinent Ideas

1. Sociological Approach

Welleck (1978:29) sociological approach is one of approach in studying

literature which is more concerned with individuals and their relationship with

society, like cultural, economic, or political aspects. Sociology of literature is a

branch study of literary works, which is looking at literary work as its relation to

the social reality, author, and literary creating process, and also the reader of its

work.

Goldmann in Endraswara (2011:78) there are some kinds of sociological

approach, they are. First, the research which sees the work of literature as social

documentation which reflects the condition in which the works are created.

Second, the research that sees the work of literature is the mirror of the

socialcondition in which the writer writes the works. Third, the research that sees

that the work of literature is manifestation of historical comments, social and

culture condition these can be mixed together in one research which uses the

sociological approach.

Page 21: THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HERrepositori.uin-alauddin.ac.id/8161/1/ASWIRA.pdf · THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HER AMBITION IN SUZANNE FRANCIS’ ZOOTOPIA A Thesis

9

Based on explanation above, the researcher concludes sociological

approach is a branch study of literary works. Which are sociology and literature

complementaryliterature is the expression of human life is not separated from the

roots of society, cultural, economic, or police etc.

2. Definition of Racism

Race is a biological sense that describes a group of people who can be

distinguished by physical characteristic through the process of reproduction (Gill,

1985: 29).

Berdichewsky (1996:18) states that the word racism is used to mean acts

of discrimination based on “racial-prejudice”. Discrimination is actual behavior,

the practice of differential and unequal treatment of other groups of people,

usually along racial, religious or ethnic lines (Parillo, 1985; 58 and 78).

Jones (1981:1) says that race has always been used as a justification for

prejudicial beliefs and attitudes. Those negative attitudes usually cause racism in

society, because racism deals with differentiation among groups of people based

on racial background.

Huges and Kroehler (2010:214) racism is the belief that some racial

groups are naturally superior and others are inferior. While, Liliweri (2005: 29-30)

also defines the same thing about racism as an ideology that is based on the idea

that humans can be separated on racial groups; that the group can be separated

based on the degree or hierarchy, based on intelligence or skills, abilities and even

morality.

Page 22: THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HERrepositori.uin-alauddin.ac.id/8161/1/ASWIRA.pdf · THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HER AMBITION IN SUZANNE FRANCIS’ ZOOTOPIA A Thesis

10

The researcher may say that the term race is referring to differentiation

grouping people according to biological and geographical area. Then, racism is

condition that happen because racial believe as a superior they have certain

capabilities and behaviors in social culture, also other as inferior can be ruled.

3. Racial Injustice

Paradise et al (2008:12) define that racial injustice is act of being unjust to

an individual or group based on race. Racial injustice as avoidable and unfair

actions that more disadvantage for disadvantaged or more advantageous for

advantaged. Racial injustice can express though stereotype (racist beliefs),

prejudice (racist emotions) and discrimination (racist behaviors and practices).

Paradise, et al. (2008: 144-148) explain about it below:

a. Stereotype

Stereotype is a belief about personal traits that people have in a social

group. Stereotype is used to categorize people in a group. People do not

understand type of a person but they put a person into one classification. People

thinking that everyone who in the group or anyone who acts likes their

classifications is one type. Stereotype are usually covers giving negative

characteristics of group of people.

Based on the definition above, the researcher concluded stereotype is a set

of beliefs held by an individual about the characteristics of different persons. The

characteristics refers to physical appearance such as hair, eyes, skin color, body

shape etc.

Page 23: THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HERrepositori.uin-alauddin.ac.id/8161/1/ASWIRA.pdf · THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HER AMBITION IN SUZANNE FRANCIS’ ZOOTOPIA A Thesis

11

b. Prejudice

Prejudice is an assessment that arises because feeling of dislike (racist

emotion) that given to an individual or a group from another individual or group

which mainly based on the group membership.

Assesment only based on social category or racial category and not based

on fact or information about himself/herself. In the practice of racism, there is

always a racial prejudice practice involved. The term racial prejudice may be

drawn as an evaluation, judgment, or even generalization of an individual or

members of a group based on certain race or racial groups.

According to the explanation above, prejudice is a negative attitude toward

a group of people who have some characteristics in common that also means

prejudge, that is to make judgments of people prior to any actual experience with

them.

c. Discrimination

The word discrimination derives from the Latin language “discriminare”,

whichmeans to distinguish between. Discrimination is defined as the behavioral

manifestation of negative prejudice. The term racial discrimination may refer to

the behavioral manifestation of negative prejudice based on race or racial groups.

In racial discrimination, there is a distinction between people on the basis of

racesor racial groups without regarding to individual merit, such as personal

achievement, skill or ability.

Descrimination is behavior to accept or reject a person based on the

membership of the group. It includes any distinction, exclusion, restriction or

Page 24: THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HERrepositori.uin-alauddin.ac.id/8161/1/ASWIRA.pdf · THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HER AMBITION IN SUZANNE FRANCIS’ ZOOTOPIA A Thesis

12

preference based on ethnicity, race, descent which has the purpose or effect of

eliminating or imparing the recognition, enjoyment, exercise on a basis of

equality, human rights and freedoms in the political, cutural, social, economic

activity and all other areas of life in society.

Based on the definition above, the researcher concluded discrimination is

aspect that cover any distinction (refer to the behavior of someone who

differentiates others people because of their race), exclusion (refer to prevent from

doing something based on race), restriction (refer to a law or rule that limits or

controls people based on race.

Then, Liliweri (2005) also explains some of the actions that are classifying

into racial injustice, as below:

a. Violence

Violence is the act of a person or group of people who cause injury or

death to another person or cause physical damage or other people’s stuff. Various

forms of events classified as violence due to violation of the rights of others that

are harmful. Violence (racial harrasment) is the act of threats, intimidation

phsychologically, socially, and physically directed to individuals or a particular of

racial group.

Based on the definition above, the researcher conclude violence divided

into two kinds. First, are physical violence refers to intention to the physical,

which is the potential for causing death, disability, injury, or harm. For instance

are hitting, kicking, stabbing, attacking etc. Second, physicological violence is

violence that targets to the spiritual or soul that can reduce or event eliminate the

Page 25: THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HERrepositori.uin-alauddin.ac.id/8161/1/ASWIRA.pdf · THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HER AMBITION IN SUZANNE FRANCIS’ ZOOTOPIA A Thesis

13

ability of normal soul. For instance, harrasment, exploitation, attacks on dignity

and integrity and hazardous work etc.

b. Segregation

Segregation is race relation in the form of action separation of different

groups. Race that feel superior deliberately distance itself from the race that is

consider low. Segregation can be performed based on residence, workplace, and

public facilities such as education, schools, churches, store, dorms etc.

Based on the definiton above, the researcher conclude segregation is

separation of humans based on status level of race group in daily life.It may apply

to recidence, workplace, and public facilities. For instance, separation residence is

occured when two or more groups separate into neighborhoods. The population

groups are divided into various neighborhood contexts and shape the living

environment at the neighborhood level.

c. Discrimination

Discrimination is society is divided into two types; there are direct

discrimination and indirect discrimination. Direct discrimination is an act that

limits a particular area, such asa settlements, occupation, publict facilities and so

no and occured when the decision directed by prejudices against certain groups.

Whereas indirect discrimination is carried out through the certain of policies that

contain bias systematic discrimination and the result in a loss to the community or

a particular group of people.

Based on the definition above the researcher concluded two kinds of

discrimination they are direct discrimination refer to a person or group is treated

Page 26: THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HERrepositori.uin-alauddin.ac.id/8161/1/ASWIRA.pdf · THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HER AMBITION IN SUZANNE FRANCIS’ ZOOTOPIA A Thesis

14

differenly due to their race, which is limiting a particular area such as : settlement,

occupation, and public facilities. While, indirect discrimination is occured where

there is a rule but in particularly disadvantages people of a particular race.

4. Definition of Struggle

Problems will always occur in our life. They might be easy or event very

difficult. When people face problems. They have to struggle toovercome the

problems. Collins in Dewi (2009:746) states that struggle is (1) to contend or fight

violently with an opponent; (2) to make great efforts; strive; (3) to make one’s

way withdifficulty.According to Abate (1993) struggle means “make violent or

determainet efforts under difficulities”. People will make some efforts and keep

struggling in dealing with problems emerging in life.

Struggle may also be interpreted as person’s strategies to protect him from

problems in life. Bernard says, “individuals also may counciously and rationally

implement strategies that enable them to cope with the stresses and problem of

life”. When people face problems, they will seek for ideas and strategies to cope

with the problems. Although it is sometimes painful and difficult, people will fine

ways to solving the problem in life by struggling.

Mc. Kenchnie (1989) notes, struggle is a task or goal requiring much effort

to accomplish the dreams. It keeps them struggling, even in the most difficult

situation. When people fail to reach their goal, they will struggle from the

unpleasant experience. They can learn positive things from their struggle. In this

case struggle refers to strive in making great efforts to achieve the goals. Each

Page 27: THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HERrepositori.uin-alauddin.ac.id/8161/1/ASWIRA.pdf · THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HER AMBITION IN SUZANNE FRANCIS’ ZOOTOPIA A Thesis

15

people believes that they needs to struggle since they realize that all of his efforts

will satisfy them.

5. Definition of Ambition

There is a notable consistency in the dictionary definitions. As can be seen,

the English language definitions see ambition as a desire to achieve ends,

especially ends like success, power, and wealth. Central to these definitions is the

aspirational nature of ambition—there is a motivational process at work, oriented

toward the attainment of outcomes. These definitions make it logical to study

ambition in the context of career success, and surprising that few such studies

have been undertaken. Aspiration to achieve a certain status or rank is one of the

cornerstones of ambition. Major life goals like ambition are based on long

timelines, over years and decades (Roberts & Robins, 2000). In the case of

ambition, the context is often the world of education (attainment), job prestige

(rank), and income (wealth). As mediating constructs between abstract personality

dispositions and attainment, one would expect that major life goals like ambition

should be consistent over time.

Evidence from longitudinal studies does indeed show high rank-order

stability in life goals over extended time periods (Roberts, O’Donnell, & Robins,

2004). Based on the explanation above the researcher may say ambition is a desire

to achieve ends, especially ends like success, power, and wealth with ambition

people will get aspiration to achieve their willingness.

through police training anyway and gets assigned to meter maid duty, to the relief

of her carrot farmer parents. When she moved to Zootopia- a city where animals

live in harmony- that dream becomes a reality. But when she teams up with a

Wilde. They have to work together after an incident between the two of them to

save Zootopia. In a city of anthropomorphic animals, a rookie bunny cop and a

cynical con artist fox must work together to uncover a conspiracy.

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter present and explain about research method, data source,

research object, research instrument, procedures of collecting data, and technique

of analyzing data use in this research.

A. Research Method

Ratna (2008: 34) considers method as the strategy to understand the

reality, the systematic steps to analyze the problem. In other words, method is the

way of the researcher to solve the problem of literary work. In this research, the

researcher used a qualitative descriptive method to analyze the data. Descriptive

method intends to describe everything that is related to the topic of research. In

this research the researcher analysis racial injustice and Judy Hoops struggle in

Suzanne Francis’ Zootopia.

B. Data Source

Vandertoep and Johnston (2009: 7) state that the data of qualitative

research are described in narrative fashion rather than in the forms of number, the

data source in this research. Those are the main data and supporting data. The

main data is the object that used in the analysis taken from a novel entitled

Zootopia. The supporting data taken from any data relating to the material

concerns, such as: some books, thesis, journals, websites which dealt with racism

and the struggle those resources to enrich the researcher’s knowledge and

comprehension in conducting this research.

18

Page 31: THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HERrepositori.uin-alauddin.ac.id/8161/1/ASWIRA.pdf · THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HER AMBITION IN SUZANNE FRANCIS’ ZOOTOPIA A Thesis

19

C. Research Object

The object in this research is a novel entitled Zootopia, the researcher

chose this novel because this novel motivated the researcher in pursuing an

ambition. All the words, phrases, sentences, and paragraphs related to the

struggles of Judy Hoops in pursuing her ambition as the research data.

D. Research Instrument

In this research, the researcher used note taking as instrument. Ray in

Arifuddin, 2014: 20) note taking is a method in assembling data required by using

note cards to write down the data findings from source of data. In order to find the

data easily, the note cards are completed by number and page where the data find.

E. Procedures of Collecting Data

These are some procedures that are doing in the process of data collecting, as

below.

1. The researcher read the novel several times and comprehensively in order

to understand the content of the text and to get more detail information and

the trustworthiness of the data.

2. The researcher used taking note to collect the data of the detail issues

related to the racial injustice that Judy Hoops face and struggle of Judy

Hoops in pursuing her ambition.

3. The researcher identified the data related to racial injustice and Judy

Hoops struggle.

Page 32: THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HERrepositori.uin-alauddin.ac.id/8161/1/ASWIRA.pdf · THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HER AMBITION IN SUZANNE FRANCIS’ ZOOTOPIA A Thesis

20

4. The researcher classified racial injustice into five kinds they are prejudice,

stereotype, discrimination, violence, and segregation and the struggleof

Judy Hoops.

5. The researcher concluded about racial injustice that Judy Hoops face and

Judy Hoops struggle in pursuing her ambition as the result of this research.

F. Technique of Analyzing Data

In analyzing the data, the researcher used Paradise, et al. (2008: 144-148)

and Liliweri (2005) theory about racial injustice. Paradise, et al. (2008: 144-148)

states that thera are three kinds of racial injustice such as prejudice, stereotype,

and discrimination. Then, Liliweri (2005) mentioned three kinds of racial injustice

they are violence, segregation, and discrimination. Overall, the researcher used

five kinds of racial injustice. They are prejudice, stereotype, violence, segregation

and discrimination. Moreover, this research is used the struggle theory by

McKechnie.

Page 33: THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HERrepositori.uin-alauddin.ac.id/8161/1/ASWIRA.pdf · THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HER AMBITION IN SUZANNE FRANCIS’ ZOOTOPIA A Thesis

CHAPTER IV

FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION

There are two sections in this chapter include findings and discussions. In

findings, the researcher presents all the data that have been found in the ‘Suzanne

Francis’ Zootopia. The researcher explains about racial injustices and the struggle

of Judy Hoops in pursuing her ambition.

A. Findings

In this section, the researcher presents the analysis about the racial

injustices to the main character Judy Hoops and the struggle of Judy Hoops in

pursuing her ambition. There are two findings elaborated by researcher and they

are presented in explanation forms. However, brief explanations also are provided

to guide readers in getting understanding about the findings. Moreover, those two

findings are the racial injustices that Judy Hoops face in pursuing her ambition

and the struggle of Judy Hoops in pursuing her ambition in ‘Suzanne Francis’

Zootopia.

1. Racial Injustice

The researcher found out that all of racial justice and struggle stated by

Liliweri (2005) and Paradise, et al. (2008: 144-148). Racial injustice is the fact of

a situation being unfair to an individual or group based on race. Racial injustice is

an unfair action or an example of unfair treatment that disadvantaged for preys

and advantaged for predators. Racial injustice can show though stereotype,

prejudice, discrimination, violence and segregation. Then, Struggle may also be

interpreted as person’s strategies to protect her from problems in life. In the novel

Page 34: THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HERrepositori.uin-alauddin.ac.id/8161/1/ASWIRA.pdf · THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HER AMBITION IN SUZANNE FRANCIS’ ZOOTOPIA A Thesis

22

Zootopia, Judy Hoops as the main character was difficult to pursue her ambition

because of the racial injustice. She needs to face stereotype, prejudice,

discrimination, violence, and segregation.

a. Stereotype

Stereotype is come from the personal traits that people have in a social group,

so that all members of the group assumed that have a characteristic, habit, and act

are same. Stereotype is used to classify people in a group. People do not

understand type of a person but they put a person into one classification. People

thinking that everyone who in the group or anyone who acts likes their

classifications is one type. Stereotype is usually covers giving negative

characteristics of group of people. In this case, the researcher found 7 data about

stereotype such as in the D1, D2, D3, D4, D5, D6, and D7. However, brief

explanations also are provided as follows:

Datum 1

Judy : The world was divided in two. Vicious predator or Meeks prey.

(Two box drop down, labeled vicious predator and meek prey. The

predator box lands on the jaguar. The meek prey box lands on Judy. Her

entrails get stuck outside the box. She drags them underneath with her).

Based on D1, the reseacher found stereotype. D1 reflects stereotype

especially when Judy Hoops need to face in pursuing her ambition because she is

giving negative characteristic to different mammal into one classification. Her

prey put into meek while predator put into vicious. Judy was categorized in meek

mammal by predator. Although not all our prey was meek, Judy Hoops has

Page 35: THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HERrepositori.uin-alauddin.ac.id/8161/1/ASWIRA.pdf · THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HER AMBITION IN SUZANNE FRANCIS’ ZOOTOPIA A Thesis

23

proven that she was not meek like other preys. In this case, she can face Gideon

and Bison in a boxing ring.

Datum 2

Gideon : Come and get ‘em.... But watch out, ‘cause I’m a fox-- and like you

said in your dumb little stage play, us predators used to eat prey. And

that killer instinct’s still in our Dunnahh.

Besides, based on D2, the researcher also found stereotype, it can be seen

when Gideon as a predator has killer instinct to make his prey afraid of him. So,

his preys has thought that Gideon is a danger and frighten mammal, and

sometimes he will use his killer instinct to eat his prey until Judy is afraid of him

because of Gideon always use killer instinct. But actually Gideon never kills or

eat his prey by using his killer instict.

Datum 3

Stu Hoops: And also bears. We have bears to fear, too. To say nothing of lions,

and wolves.

Based on D3, the researcher also found stereotype, it can be proven when

the preys have thought that bears, lions, and wolves as a danger mammal. In this

case, Judy’s father has bad experience about them. Judy’s father cares with his

daughter because of he scares that the bears, lions, and wolves will kill his

daughter. So, he prepare something in order to make sure his daughter safe in big

city Zootopia.

Page 36: THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HERrepositori.uin-alauddin.ac.id/8161/1/ASWIRA.pdf · THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HER AMBITION IN SUZANNE FRANCIS’ ZOOTOPIA A Thesis

24

Datum 4

Judy : A biological component. You know something in their DNA...

Reporter 4 : (more aggressive) In their DNA? Can you elaborate on that,

please?

Judy : Yes. What I mean is, thousands of years ago... um... predators

survived through their aggressive hunting instincts. For whatever

reason, they seem to be reverting back to their primitive, savage

ways

Based on D4, the researcher found that Judy has seen 14 missing of

mammals go savage. They are coming from predators. She thinks that the

predators become aggressive or go savage because of thousand years ago. It can

be proven where the predators had survived through their aggressive hunting.

Nevertheless, not all the predators become aggressive or go savage.

Datum 5

Nick : (sarcastic, hard) Clearly, there’s a biological component? These

predators may be reverting back to their primitive, savage ways. Are you

serious?

Judy : I just stated the facts of the case. I mean, it’s not like a bunny could go

savage...

Nick : Right. But a fox could? Huh?

Judy : You know what I mean. You’re not that kind of predator.

Nick : Yeah, don’t think I didn’t notice that little item the first time we met.

(escalating anger) So let me ask you a question. Are you afraid of me?

Page 37: THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HERrepositori.uin-alauddin.ac.id/8161/1/ASWIRA.pdf · THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HER AMBITION IN SUZANNE FRANCIS’ ZOOTOPIA A Thesis

25

(Hopps looks heartbroken) Do you think I might go nuts? Do you think I

might go savage? Does he lunge, like he’s going to bite her. She flinches

and unthinkingly puts her hand on the repellent.

Based on D5, the researcher found that Judy thinks that 14 missing of

mammals have same biological component. It can be proven when Mr. Otter as a

predator is very aggressive, go nuts, and go savage. But in this case, Nick has

proven with Judy that not all predators are vicious, aggressive, go nuts, and go

savage. Besides, Judy also thought that it is impossible for her to be vicious,

aggressive, go nuts, and go savage because she has a different biological

component.

Datum 6

Bellwether : Our city is 90% prey, Judy. And right now they’re just really

scared. You’re a hero to them. They trust you. And so that’s why

Chief Bogo and I want you to be the public face of the ZPD.

Based on D6, the researcher also found stereotype. It can be seen when the

preys were meek; Bellwether put 90% which preys scared with predators because

predators will be possible go savage like thousand years ago. So that is why,

Bellwether do hopes that Judy being a hero for her preys.

Datum 7

Bellwether : Underestimated, Under-appreciated aren’t you sick of it?

Predators they may be strong and loud, but prey out-number

predators 10 to one. Think of it-- 90 percent of the population,

united against a common enemy. We’ll be unstoppable

Page 38: THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HERrepositori.uin-alauddin.ac.id/8161/1/ASWIRA.pdf · THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HER AMBITION IN SUZANNE FRANCIS’ ZOOTOPIA A Thesis

26

Based on D7, the researcher also found stereotype. It can be seen when

their preys thought that the predators are vicious, which is identical with strong

and loud mammal. Moreover, the prey will be underestimated, under-appreciated

by predator because they were meek mammals. So, the researcher concluded those

data were included in stereotype because stereotype is used to categorize people in

a group. People do not understand type of a person but they put a person into one

classification.

b. Prejudice

Prejudice is an assessment of a group or an individual based on membership

of group. Prejudice attitudes include irrational feeling of dislike and even hatred

from certain groups, based perceptions and beliefs about the group. Assessment

only based on particular group or particular race and not based on fact or

information about him or her as individual. In the practice of racism, there is

always a racial prejudice practice involved. The term racial prejudice may be

drawn as an evaluation, judgment, or even generalization of an individual or

members of a group based on certain race or racial groups. In this case, the

researcher found 5 data about prejudice such as in the D8, D9, D10, D11, and

D12. So, brief explanations about prejudice are provided as follows:

Datum 8

Gideon : Bunny cop. That is the most stupidest thing I ever heard.

Based on D8, the reseacrcher found prejudice in the novel Zootopia. It can

be seen when Judy still a kid, she has ambition to be a first bunny cop. But,

Gideon always underestimated her, according to Gideon, Judy cannot be a first

Page 39: THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HERrepositori.uin-alauddin.ac.id/8161/1/ASWIRA.pdf · THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HER AMBITION IN SUZANNE FRANCIS’ ZOOTOPIA A Thesis

27

bunny cop or police. It is impossible for her because of Judy is very weak, meek

and not strong enough to battle her enemy. So that is why Gideon always belittle

her ambition. Beside, her great-grandparents just a farmer it means that she will be

a farmer too not to be cop or police. The researcher concluded that Gideon’s

statement is negative prejudice for Judy, because he does not know that all of

mammals has a different capability. So, it is possible to Judy become a good cop

or police in her future.

Datum 9

Gideon: Nice costume, loser what crazy world are you living in where you think

could be a cop?

Based on D9, the reseacher found that prejudice was seen in Gideon’s

statement when he belittle Judy’s ambition. Gideon said it is impossible for Judy

to be a first bunny cop or police. He thought that Judy was crazy with her

ambition. It is proven in Gideon’s assessment that arises because feeling of dislike

(racist emotion) that given to an individual or a group from another individual or

group which mainly based on the group membership.

Datum 10

Gideon : I want to you remember this moment—the next time you think you

will ever be anything more than just a stupid, carrot farming dumb

bunny

Based on D10, the researcher found prejudice when Gideon asks Judy to

stop her dreams to be a first bunny cop because in Gideon’s opinion, Judy is a

stupid and carrot farming dumb bunny. He thinks that she does not deserve to be a

Page 40: THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HERrepositori.uin-alauddin.ac.id/8161/1/ASWIRA.pdf · THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HER AMBITION IN SUZANNE FRANCIS’ ZOOTOPIA A Thesis

28

cop. Gideon’s assessment is only based on social category or racial category and

not based on fact or information about herself.

Datum 11

Nick : Naïve little hick with good grades and big ideas decides, “hey look it

me, I’m gone move to Zootopia—where predators and prey live in

harmony and sing kumbaya!” only to find—whoopsie, we don’t all get

along. And that dream becoming a big city cop? Double whoopsie! She’s

a meter maid. A whoopsie number three—no one cares about her or her

dreams. And soon enough those dreams die and our bunny sinks into

emotional and literal squalor living in a box under a bridge. Till’ finally

she has no choice out to go back home with that cute, fuzzy wuzzy little

tail between her legs to become—you’re from Bunny burrow, is that

what you said?—so how bout of a carrot farmer...that sound about right?

Based on D11, the researcher also found prejudice. It can be proven when

Nick also gives his negative assessment to Judy. Nick also underestimated her to

be a first cop or police. Nick has given negative prejudice to Judy when she

becomes a new recruit member in Zootopia Police Department. Based on Nick

experience there is not bunny as cop or police in the big city like Zootopia. He

thought that Judy cannot become a real police officer but she deserves to be a

carrot farmer as her great-grandparents.

Datum 12

Nick : (Points to her) Dumb bunny.

Judy :I am NOT a dumb bunny.

Page 41: THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HERrepositori.uin-alauddin.ac.id/8161/1/ASWIRA.pdf · THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HER AMBITION IN SUZANNE FRANCIS’ ZOOTOPIA A Thesis

29

Based on D12, the researcher found prejudice when Nick thought that Judy

is a dumb and stupid bunny. In this case, Nick had given negative assessment to

Judy. Based on dialogues above, Nick has said something not based on the fact

about Judy. The researcher concluded that Judy is smart bunny not a dumb and

stupid bunny because of she is the best graduate from Police Training Academy.

So, the researcher concluded those data were included in prejudice because

prejudice is a negative attitude toward a group of people who have some

characteristics in common that also means prejudge, that is to make judgments of

people prior to any actual experience with them.

c. Discrimination

Descrimination is different actions and behavior towards other according

to their race. It includes any distinction, exclusion, restriction or preference based

on ethnicity, race, descent which has the purpose or effect of eliminating or

imparing the recognition, enjoyment, exercise on a basis of equality, human rights

and freedoms in the political, cutural, social, economic activity and all other areas

of life in society. The researcher found there were 4 data about descrimination. It

can be seen in D13, D14, 15 and D16. Brief explantion about descrimination as

follows:

Datum 13

Judy : Greasy walls... rickety bed...

Based on D13, the reseacrcher found about discrimination. It can be seen

when Judy arrives in an apartment in Zootopia. The apartment is very dirty such

the wall is very greasy and the bed is ricekty. All the furniture looks too old. Judy

Page 42: THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HERrepositori.uin-alauddin.ac.id/8161/1/ASWIRA.pdf · THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HER AMBITION IN SUZANNE FRANCIS’ ZOOTOPIA A Thesis

30

thinks that may be the owner of this aprtment did not clear the aprtment because

of she is only the carrot farming so she do not deserve to get the luxury furniture

as the owner. Actuallly the owner of apartment have to clean the apartment in

order the guest can enjoy all the facilities in an apartment.

Datum 14

Bogo : I will give you 48 hours.

Judy : YES!

Bogo : That’s two days to find Emmitt Otterton.

Judy : Okay.

Based on D14, the researcher found discrimination when Judy must solve

the case about the 14 missing of mammals in two days or 48 hours. Besides, the

officers ask Judy if she was fail in solving this case she must stop her job as a

police officer. While other officers just keep stay with their job and did not help

Judy to solve this case. This is a pure discrimination when the other officers limit

in a particular area such as: settlement, occupation, and public facilities in

Zootopia Police Department.

Datum 15

Nick : Sorry, what I said was, “no.” She will not be giving you that badge.

Look, you gave her a clown vest and a three-wheel joke-mobile and two

days to solve a case you guys haven’t cracked in two weeks? Yeah, no

wonder she needed to get help from a fox, none of you guys were gonna

help her, were you? Judy looks at Nick, stunned he’s sticking up for her.

Here’s the thing Chief, you gave her the 48 hours, so technically we still

Page 43: THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HERrepositori.uin-alauddin.ac.id/8161/1/ASWIRA.pdf · THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HER AMBITION IN SUZANNE FRANCIS’ ZOOTOPIA A Thesis

31

have 10 left to find our Mr. Otterton...and that’s exactly what we’re

gonna do, so if you’ll excuse us... we have a very big lead to follow and a

case to crack. Good day.

Based on D15, the reseacrcher also found discrimintion when Judy got

three discriminations in public facilities. First, Judy gets a clown vest as her

costume when she works in Zootopia Police Department. It is totally different

with another officer where they are wearing a good costume. Second, Judy always

use a three wheel joke mobile as her transportation when she had her parking

duty. While other officers use a fast and big mobile as their transportation. The

last, Judy does not have teamwork when she is solving the case about 14 missing

of mammals. In this case, she have a lot of obstacles to solve big problems in

ZPD, while other officers have good costume, good teamwork, and good

transportion to solve their case.

Datum 16

Bogo : I’ve got three items on the docket. First... we need to acknowledge the

elephant in the room. (nods to ELEPHANT) Francine, happy birthday.

Bogo : Number two: There are some new recruits with us I should introduce.

But I’m not going to, because I don’t care. Finally... He turns to a push

pin-pocked MAP that’s covered in photos of MISSING MAMMALS.

Hopps’s eyes go wide.

Based on D16, the researcher also found discrimination. It can be proven

which applied by Chef Bogo. From the dialogue above, Chef Bogo has three

items on the docket. The first item is happy birthday to Francine one of the

Page 44: THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HERrepositori.uin-alauddin.ac.id/8161/1/ASWIRA.pdf · THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HER AMBITION IN SUZANNE FRANCIS’ ZOOTOPIA A Thesis

32

elephant in the room, the elephant was happy and shy. The second item is the

new recruits, one of the new recruits is Judy but Chef Bogo does not mention

because he does not care about that. It is not important to intoduce Judy in front of

the officers.

The researcher concluded these data were included in discrimination

because descrimination is behavior to accept or reject a person based on the

membership of the group. It includes any distinction, exclusion, restriction or

preference based on ethnicity, race, descent which has the purpose or effect of

eliminating or imparing the recognition, enjoyment, exercise on a basis of

equality, human rights and freedoms in the political, cutural, social, economic

activity and all other areas of life in society.

d. Violence

Violence is the act of a person or group of people who cause injury,

damage, hurt or death to another person or group. Various forms of events

classified as violence due to violation of the rights of others that are harmful.

Violence (racial harassment) is the act of threats, intimidation psychologically,

socially, and physically directed to individuals or a particular of racial group. The

researcher has found 2 data were included in violence such as in D17 and D18.

Brief explanation about violence as follows:

Datum 17

(Gideon shoves Judy. Hard. She falls. The other prey animals flee to safety

behind a nearby tree, leaving her to face the thugs alone).

Page 45: THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HERrepositori.uin-alauddin.ac.id/8161/1/ASWIRA.pdf · THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HER AMBITION IN SUZANNE FRANCIS’ ZOOTOPIA A Thesis

33

Based on D17, the researcher found datum about violence. It can be seen

when Judy gets the violence from Gideon when she tries to get the Sheep’s

tickets. Gideon is angry and becomes rude to Judy. Based on the narration above,

Gideon had done physical violence by shoves Judy hard until she falls.

Datum 18

Gideon : Cry little baby bunny. Cry, cry (-Suddenly-- BAM! Judy kicks Gideon

in the face with her hind legs. He stumbles back, then checks his lip for

blood).

Gideon : Oh, you don’t know when to quit, do ya? (He unsheathes his claws

like a switchblade, then slaps her, drawing blood from her cheek. She

cowers, as do her scared friends behind the tree).

Based on D18, the researcehr also found violence. It can be proven when

Judy wakes up and she uses her small foot to kick Gideon. She had kicked Gideon

because Gideon is angry, slap and attack Judy with his claws until make Judy’s

drawing blood from her cheek.

The researcher concluded that these data were included in violence

because this is one of physical violence where Gideon using a claw to slap and

attack Judy. So, the researcher concludes violence divided into two kinds. First,

are physical violence refers to intention to the physical, which is the potential for

causing death, disability, injury, or harm. For instance are hitting, kicking,

stabbing, attacking etc. Second, physicological violence is violence that targets to

the spiritual or soul that can reduce or event eliminate the ability of normal soul.

For instance, harrasment, exploitation, attacks on dignity and integrity and

hazardous work etc.

e. Segregation

Segregation is a race relation in the form of action separation of different

groups. Race that feel superior deliberately distance itself from the race that is

consider low. Segregation can be performed based on residence, workplace, and

public facilities such as education, schools, churches, store, dorms etc. The

researcher found only one datum such as D19. Brief explanation about

segregation as follows:

Datum 19

Bogo : Officers Grizzoli, Fangmeyer, Delgato-- your teams take Missing

Mammals from the Rainforest District. Officers McHorn, Rhinowitz,

Wolfard, your teams take Sahara Square. Officers Higgins, Snarlov,

Trunkaby: Tundratown. And finally, our first bunny, Officer

Hopps.Hopps sits up, expectant but steely.Bogo looks at the final case

file in his hand. He takes a dramatic breath, then:) Parking Duty.

Dismissed!

Judy : Parking duty?

Based on data D19, the researcher has found segregation. It can be seen

Chef Bogo divided some police officers into a group. The first group get as duty

to solve the case about 14 missing of mammals in the Rainforest District. Then,

the second group get as a duty in Sahara Square. Last, the third group work in

Tundratown while, Judy gets a duty as parking duty. She is not happy as a parking

duty, she wants to solve the case about the 14 missing of mammals like other

officer but Chef Bogo refuses her request. This is one of segregation especialy in

workplace. So, the researcher concluded these data as segregation because of

Page 47: THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HERrepositori.uin-alauddin.ac.id/8161/1/ASWIRA.pdf · THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HER AMBITION IN SUZANNE FRANCIS’ ZOOTOPIA A Thesis

35

segregation is separation of humans based on status level of race group in daily

life. It may apply to recidence, workplace, and public facilities. For instance,

separation residence is occured when two or more groups separate into

neighborhoods. The population groups are divided into various neighborhood

contexts and shape the living environment at the neighborhood level.

2. Judy’s Struggle in Pursuing her Ambition

In our life people meet many problems, either easy or difficult. People will

put some effort to reach their goals. In this case, Judy had suffered with the racial

injustices. Although, she must struggle to pursue her ambition as a first cop or

police. She will carry out some ways in order to make her ambition comes true.

Judy struggle is related with her ambition. According to Mc. Kenchnie (1989)

notes, struggle is an effort, hard work, to get ahead in achieving a good things as

the key to success. Struggle is effort that human does under difficult condition of

her life. People will learn positive things even though they failed. When negative

things come people will keep struggle for their satisfying goals. In this case

struggle refers to strive in making great efforts to achieve the goals. Each people

believes that they needs to struggle since they realize that all of his efforts will

satisfy them. Based on the novel Zootopia, the researcher has found 11 data about

Judy struggle. Brief explanation about Judy’s struggle are as follows:

a. Gets the Sheep Tickets

Datum 1

Judy : Here you go.

Sharla : Wow! You got our tickets!

Page 48: THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HERrepositori.uin-alauddin.ac.id/8161/1/ASWIRA.pdf · THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HER AMBITION IN SUZANNE FRANCIS’ ZOOTOPIA A Thesis

36

Gareth : You’re awesome, Judy!

Based on D1, the researcher has found Judy struggle when Gideon and his

friends had taken the Sheep’s tickets. In this case, Judy see the situation and is

interested in helping the Sheep. Judy struggles to get the Sheep’s tickets, Gideon

shove Judy hardly until make her fall, Judy tries to wake up and attack him by her

small kick, but Gideon uses his claws and he slaps Judy until make her cheek

drawing blood. Although Judy keep struggle because Judy want to struggle to get

her ambition become true as a cop or police. It can be seen based on her

statement. “And I can make the world a better place! I am going to be...A police

officer!”. In this case, Judy’s ambition will give inspiration for her to keep

struggle even in the most difficult situation.

b. Goes to Police Academy Training

Datum 2

(Listen up Cadets! Zootopia has 12 unique ecosystems within its city

limits-- Tundra Town, Sahara Square, Rainforest District, to name a few. You’re

gonna have to master all of them before you hit the streets-- or guess what?

(toHopps) You’ll be dead! Sahara Square Judy struggles through the sand. On the

Monkey Bar Judy swings across the bars, simulating the Rainforest District. She

falls off, landing face first in the mud. Tundra Town: Judy and the cadets sprint

toward the wall. The clawed animals dig into the ice wall. Judy slides off. Boxing

Ring Judy gets in the ring with a big bison).

Based on D2, the researcher has found another struggle in this novel. It can

be proven when Judy continue her struggle to follow the Police Academy

Page 49: THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HERrepositori.uin-alauddin.ac.id/8161/1/ASWIRA.pdf · THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HER AMBITION IN SUZANNE FRANCIS’ ZOOTOPIA A Thesis

37

Training, if Judy wants to pass from Police Academy Training she must face 12

ecosystems in Zootopia as the requirements. First, Judy needs to face Sahara

Square Stimulation that full of sand. Second, Judy swings across the Vine

Covered Monkey Bars. Third, she always falls off and landing her face first in the

mud in the Rainforest District. Forth is Tundra Town, where ice wall become the

biggest obstacles here. All of cadets must sprint toward the wall. The clawed

animals dig into the ice wall. The last is Boxing Ring; Judy must face bison in the

boxing ring.

So, Judy decided to focus so that she can pass the requirements. First, she

always runs at the sunset overnight. She stays up until late to study, doing sit up

and etc. Judy makes all of cadets because she wants to pass 12 physical exercises.

On the Ice Wall Judy bounds up the wall, jumps off of the backs of the big

animals and makes it over. Besides, in the Box Ring Judy dodges a few swings.

The Bison misses. Judy bounds over him and uses his momentum-- kicking his

other hand into his face, knocking him down.

In her struggle, Judy always remember Gideon’s statement that she never

to be a bunny cop and her parents also said that impossible for her because her

great-grandparents just a carrot farmer. So, through her struggle she wants to

prove with her parents and Gideon that she can be a good cop or police. She really

confident that she can be best graduate in Police Academy Training than other

cadets.

c. Has Parking Meter

Datum 3

Judy : Boom! 200 tickets before noon. (A final ding... Reveal: her own traffic

cart is at an expired meter. Judy rolls her eyes and writes herself a

ticket).

Judy : 201.

Based on D3, the researcher has found Judy’s struggle. It can be seen

when Chef Bogo underestimated Judy as a police officer. Chef Bogo challenges

her as a parking duty with writing two hundred tickets in a day. Judy must prove

that she can finish 200 tickets before noon. She used her super sensitive ears to

hear a meter ding. Judy zooms past a now of cars, marking their tires, and cruise

the streets. She slams her brakes—then proudly issues ticket #1 she do it again

until 200. There is a reason why Judy struggles to finish 200 tickets before noon.

She wants to prove with Chef Bogo that she is a real police.

d. Gets Jumbo Pop for Nick and his Son

Datum 4

Judy : Well, I don’t wanna cause you any trouble, but I believe scooping ice

39

Based on D4, the researcher has found struggles. It can be proven when

Nick’s son wants to buy a jumbo pop. He is very like to eat ice jumbo pop. Jerry

refuses to serve with them. Nevertheless, Judy had seen the situation until she was

pity. Jerry as serve underestimated Judy. He said Judy just a parking meter not

police. She keep struggle to get the ice jumbo pop for Nick and his son. She

makes find around Jumbeaux’s café, she finds some mistakes then explain to

Jerry. They have done Health Code Violation which is scoop from their trunk.

Finally, Jerry wants to serve them. Judy Hoops struggle because she wants to

the mammals for minimalize their problems.

e. Gets the Robber (The Weasel)

Datum 5

Judy : I popped the weasel! (Behind her, Chief Bogo yells from the second

floor).

Based on D5, the researcher has found Judy struggle. It can be seen when

there was a robber enter to Mr. Frantic’s shop. Mr. Frantic really hopes that Judy

can help him to catch the robber. While other officer unappreciated Judy. Judy

keep struggle she had run and jumped very quickly. Where Judy in Little

was unhappy as a parking duty. She have been parking maid and she wants to be a

real police so that is why she is keeping struggle to get it.

f. Helps Nick to Get a New Job

are good at multiplying-- anyway, according to your tax forms...

(presenting the forms) ...you reported let me see here: zero.

Unfortunately, lying on a federal form is a punishable offense. Five years

jail time.

Based on D6, the researcher has found struggle when Nick has done felony

tax evasion since he was 12 years old, Judy thought Nick stop his action. She goes

to Nick in order Nick wants to help her to solve the case about 14 missing of

mammals because there was no police officer want to help her. Fortunely, Nick

done by Judy because of Nick wants to help her to solve the case about 14 missing

of mammals.

In this case, Judy struggles through her brightness, she record Nick’s voice

related with felony tax evasion. Finally, Nick decided to help Judy to solve the

Page 53: THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HERrepositori.uin-alauddin.ac.id/8161/1/ASWIRA.pdf · THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HER AMBITION IN SUZANNE FRANCIS’ ZOOTOPIA A Thesis

case about 14 missing of mammals, he cannot stop to help Judy until the case

about 14 missing of mammals done.

Judy has made Nick left felony tax evasion because he was busy for help

Judy to solve the case about 14 missing of mammals. In the end of novel

Zootopia, Nick as sly fox can be a police officer in Zootopia Police Department. It

can be proven from Chef Bogo’s statement.

“...Enough! Shut it! We have some new recruits with us this morning,

including our first fox. Who cares”.

From dialogues above, Judy successes to get new job for Nick, Judy

struggles to get something because she wants other mammals prove their capable.

Nick and Judy have a different race but they can prove to other mammals, they

can be a real police in big city Zootopia.

handed out 14 Missing Mammal files... They’re all here. All the missing

mammals are right here.

Based on D7, the researcher has found struggle. It can be proven when Mr.

Otter was missing, his wife always asks the other officers in Zootopia Police

Department but there is no respond. Judy was felt pity and promise with Mrs.

Otter. She promises that she will help to solve Mr. Otter’s case. She needs Nick in

solving the case about 14 missing of mammals. Based on dialogues above, in

Cliffside Asylum Nick and Judy can find 14 missing of mammals. This is why

Judy must struggle to solve 14 missing of mammals. Judy will be lost her

ambition as first bunny cop in ZPD, so that, Judy must solve the case 14 missing

of mammals.

Bogo : Ladies and Gentle mammals... 14 mammals went missing and all 14

have been found by our newest recruit, who will speak to you in a

moment.

Based on D8, the researcher also found struggle. it can be seen when Judy

Hoops as a new recruit can solve the case about 14 missing of mammals. Through

this way, Judy had proven her capable to other officers that she can do it. She is

the real police in Zootopia Police Department.

h. Finds Out the Cause of Predators Go Savage

Datum 9

Judy : Oh, Nick! Night howlers aren’t wolves. They’re toxic flowers. I think

someone is targeting predators on purpose and making them go savage.

Based on D9, the reseracher has foun Judy’s struggle when the 14 missing

of mammals go savage. So that, predators must leave Zootopia city because they

might be reverting back to their primitive or savage ways like thousands years

ago. Finally, Judy decided to come backs to her village. In Bunny Burrow Judy’s

parents tell her about toxic flower. After Judy coming back to Zootopia she

explains with Nick that the cause of 14 missing mammals go savage it is because

of toxic flower. In this case, someone who had target the predator as their victim

Page 55: THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HERrepositori.uin-alauddin.ac.id/8161/1/ASWIRA.pdf · THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HER AMBITION IN SUZANNE FRANCIS’ ZOOTOPIA A Thesis

and make them aggressive. It can be seen when Judy must to struggle to find out

the 14 missing of mammals.

Datum 10

Judy : Mayor Bellwether! (out of breath, rapidly) We found out what’s

happening. Someone’s darting predators with a serum-- that’s what’s

making them go savage.

Based on D10, the researcher also found the Judy’s struggle when Judy

and Nick try to collect information about 14 missing of mammals go savage. After

they had through a lot of obstacles, finally they can find 14 missing of mammals

go savage because of Bellwether. She has shoot 14 predator with a serum. Judy as

a police officer must catch Bellwether in order there is never been predator go

savage. She must keep the public order, prevent and solve the crime.

i. Motivate Other Officers

Datum 11

Judy : when I was a kid, I thought Zootopia was this perfect place where

everyone got along and anyone could be anything...turns out, real life’s a

little bit more complicated than a slogan on a bumper sticker. Real life is

messy. We all have limitations. We all make mistake, we all have a lot in

common. And the more we try to understand one another, the more

exceptional each us will be. So, no matter what type of animal you are,

from the biggest elephant to our first fox... I implore you... try. Try to

make the world a better place. Look inside yourself, and recognize that

change starts with you. It starts with me. It starts with all of us.

44

Based on D11, the researcher had found Judy’s struggle when Judy is

giving motivation to other officers. Judy makes it through storytelling about her

life, she tells that she is only a little bunny who grew up on a farm and have a big

ambition where she want to be a first bunny cop in the big city Zootopia. It can be

proven when many mammals afraid to make some mistakes, they are limiting

their action.

Judy gives an advice or motivations to other officers to make the world a

better place. Finally, Judy has succeeded to be a first bunny cop or police.

Nevertheless, she will keep struggling and keep going in order her career keep

away. She will keep public order, prevent and stop the crime between prey and

predator.

B. Discussion

In this section, the researcher also divided into two sections, which has

mentioned earlier in finding section. Therefore, this section was filled by deeper

explanation and information than findings’ section. In those two parts, there are

the racial injustices through stereotype, prejudice, discrimination, violence, and

segregation that Judy faces in pursuing her ambition and the second part discusses

about the struggle of Judy in pursuing her ambition through some ways.

Furthermore, the explanation relies on the kinds of racial injustice by Paradise, et

al. (2008: 144-148) and Liliweri (2005). Then, the explanation about struggle by

Mc. Kenchnie (1989).

Moreover, the researcher also explains about the similarities and difference

between thoese previous findings and this research.

Page 57: THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HERrepositori.uin-alauddin.ac.id/8161/1/ASWIRA.pdf · THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HER AMBITION IN SUZANNE FRANCIS’ ZOOTOPIA A Thesis

45

1. Racial Injustice

In Zootopia novel, applying theory of racial injustices and struggle could be

categorized five racial injustices in the novel Zootopia which are mentioned by by

Paradise, et al. (2008: 144-148) and Liliweri (2005). In Zootopia novel was

included stereotypes, prejudice, discrimination, violence, segregation and

struggle.

In Zootopia novel, the researcher categorized D1, D2, D3, D4, D5, D6,

and D7 as stereotype. It can be proven when Gideon, Nick, Chef Bogo, the

officers, Bellwether and others is used to categorize someone in a group. It is

happen in Judy life. She always get segergation from her surrounding especially

when she move to Zootopia city. It is suitable with Paradise, et al. (2008: 144-

148) state that people do not understand type of a person but they put a person

into one classification. People thinking that everyone who in the group or anyone

who acts likes their classifications is one type. Stereotype are usually covers

giving negative characteristics of group of people.

Then, in Zootopia novel, the researcher categorized D8, D9, D10, D11,

and D12 as prejudice. It can be seen when Gideon and Nick always

underestimated Judy because of she want to be a first cop or police in the

Zootopia city. Gideon and Nick did not believe that Judy will achieve her dream

due to she is very weak, meek and not strong enoug to battle her enemy. As It is

suitable with Paradise, et al. (2008: 144-148) define that prejudice is an

assessment that arises because feeling of dislike (racist emotion) that given to an

individual or a group from another individual or group which mainly based on the

group membership. Assesment only based on social category or racial category

and not based on fact or information about himself/herself. In the practice of

Page 58: THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HERrepositori.uin-alauddin.ac.id/8161/1/ASWIRA.pdf · THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HER AMBITION IN SUZANNE FRANCIS’ ZOOTOPIA A Thesis

46

racism, there is always a racial prejudice practice involved. The term racial

prejudice may be drawn as an evaluation, judgment, or even generalization of an

individual or members of a group based on certain race or racial groups.

Then, in Zootopia novel, the researcher categorized D13, D14, D15 and

D16 as discrimination. It can be proven when Chef Bogo and the officers make a

discrimantion with her where Judy did not deserver to use good public faciilities.

It is totally different with another officer where they are wearing a good costume,

good transportation, and have a good teamwork. So, the researcher concluded that

it is one of the discrimination that happen in this novel. As Paradise, et al. (2008:

144-148) say that discrimination is behavior to accept or reject a person based on

the membership of the group.

Furthermore, in Zootopia novel, the researcher also categorized D17 and

D18 as violence. It can be seen when Gideon was angry and become rude to Judy.

Gideon had done physical violence by shoves Judy until she falls. Besides, he also

slap and attack Judy with his claws until make Judy’s drawing blood from her

cheek. It is one of the violence that the researcher had got from this novel. It is

suitable with Liliweri theory (2005) states that Violence is the act of a person or

group of people who cause injury or death to another person or cause physical

damage or other people’s stuff. Various forms of events classified as violence due

to violation of the rights of others that are harmful. Violence (racial harrasment) is

the act of threats, intimidation phsychologically, socially, and physically directed

to individuals or a particular of racial group.

Page 59: THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HERrepositori.uin-alauddin.ac.id/8161/1/ASWIRA.pdf · THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HER AMBITION IN SUZANNE FRANCIS’ ZOOTOPIA A Thesis

47

Moreover, the researcher conclude violence divided into two kinds. First,

are physical violence refers to intention to the physical, which is the potential for

causing death, disability, injury, or harm.

Last, in Zootopia novel, the researcher also categorized D19 as

segregation. It can be proven when Chef Bogo divided some police officers into a

group where the first group get as duty to solve the case about 14 missing of

mammals in the Rainforest District. Then, the second group get as a duty in

Sahara Square. Last, the third group work in Tundratown while, Judy get a duty as

parking duty. She was not happy as a parking duty, she wants to solve the case

about the 14 missing of mammals like other officer but Chef Bogo refused her

willingness. This is one of segregation especialy in workplace. As Liliweri’s

theory (2005) define that segregation is race relation in the form of action

separation of different groups. Race that feel superior deliberately distance itself

from the race that is consider low. Segregation can be performed based on

residence, workplace, and public facilities such as education, schools, churches,

store, dorms etc. Besides, segregation is separation of humans based on status

level of race group in daily life.It may apply to recidence, workplace, and public

facilities. For instance, separation residence is occured when two or more groups

separate into neighborhoods. The population groups are divided into various

neighborhood contexts and shape the living environment at the neighborhood

level.

2. Judy’s Struggle in Pursuing her Ambition

Based on the finding before the researcher has found how Judy struggles to

pursue her ambition as first bunny cop or police in Zootopia city. The researcher

has seen Judy struggle through some ways.

Eventually, in Zootopia novel, the researcher has found 11 data about Judy

struggles. It can be seen when Judy struggle to get the sheep tickets, goes to

Police Academy Training, has parking meter, get jumbo pop for Nick and his son,

get or catch the robber (The Weasel), help nick to get a new job, find out 14

missing of mammals, find out the cause of predators go savage, and the last

motivate other officers. As Mc. Kenchnie’s theory (1989) notes that struggle is a

task or goal requiring much effort to accomplish or achieve the dreams. It keeps

them struggling, even in the most difficult situation. When people fail to reach

their goal, they will struggle from the unpleasant experience. They can learn

positive things from their struggle. In this case struggle refers to strive in making

great efforts to achieve the goals. Each people believes that they needs to struggle

since they realize that all of his efforts will satisfy them.

Then, the difference of this research between the first previous finding is

in this researcher is talk about the racial injustice and struggle in animal group

especially in Zootopia novel. It is totally different in the first previous findings

because of in this research talk about of racism occurred and spirit to struggle

against racism in two poems of Amiri Baraka entitled Notes for A Speech, and

Ka’ba of human being that deals with Black People including African as their

ancestor and ethnicity.

Page 61: THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HERrepositori.uin-alauddin.ac.id/8161/1/ASWIRA.pdf · THE STRUGGLE OF JUDY HOOPS IN PURSUING HER AMBITION IN SUZANNE FRANCIS’ ZOOTOPIA A Thesis

Racism is a belief system based on assumption of perceived or natural

biological differences between different races or racial groups to determine groups

or individual’s behavior and attitude. Racism may be based on an assumption of

natural biological differences between different ethnic groups to determine

cultural or individual behavior. Forms of racism are revealed in the poems are

personally-mediated, internalized, and institutional racism. Black people have

been stereotyped and discriminated in all aspects of their lives. They were also

segregated in schools, public facilities, churches, hospitals, cafes, libraries,

elevators, housing, drinking fountains, hotels, etc. Therefore, Black people

struggled to obtain the equal rights as White people so that they will have the

same opportunities of income, wealth and prosperity.

Racial injustice is a belief system based on assumption of perceived or

natural biological differences between different races or racial groups to

determine groups or individual’s behavior and attitude. Racial injustice may be

based on an assumption of natural biological differences between different ethnic

groups to determine cultural or individual behavior. Forms of racial injustice are

revealed in the novel are personally-mediated, internalized, and institutional racial

injustice. Judy Hoops have been stereotyped, prejudice, discriminated, an violence

in all aspects of their lives. They were also segregated in schools, public facilities

etc.

Moreover, this novel also encourage the weak and meek animals to be
