We, as student nurses, assume greater responsibilities than the average young girl, for
the lives of others are entrusted in our care. We are proud of this added responsibility and
even though our young lives may be a little more complicated and our free time more
limited, we have managed to fulfill our desire of leading the happy, satisfying life that the average girl seeks.
We hope to convey to you throughout our yearbook, in pictures and words, the two
different lives we lead at MMSM: that of the student nurse and the delightful young girl.

PARENTS
At the beginning, but we’re near the end, we, as seniors,
wish to extend our sincere gratitude to our parents. Through
the years they have stood quietly by us in the background
never asking; seldom receiving thanks for any of their many
contributions. When we were small they cradled us in their
arms; later they led us by the hand. As the years passed we
received a pat on the back or a shake of the hand in the same
manner. They have listened to our problems, given us comfort
and encouragement, and the greatest gift of all—their love and
understanding. Without you, our parents, these past three
years would still be an unrealized dream. For everything you
have done these years and all the years of our lives we say
“Thanks”. You are the best parents in the world and we are so
glad you belong to us.
MY CAP It’s only a piece of white muslin
Perched on the top of my head,
It’s value to some may mean nothing
To me it’s a symbol instead.
A symbol of hope, cheer, and comfort
To those who are suffering and ill.
To me it gives strength unbelieving
My work to perform with a will.
Sometime I am discouraged, disheartened;
My task seem so hopeless to me.
My cap seems to speak of a promise
Of things I so want to be!
No jewels adorn its wide brim,
So simple and plain is its line—
Treat it with reverence and honor
For there’s only one cap of its kind!
MRS. PEARL COE: HOUSEMOTHER
“A Pearl of great price”
For her never-ending encouragement and good-will, her infallible
sense of good humor, her patience and understanding, and for her interest in us as students and as individuals, we the senior class of 1969,
proudly dedicate THE STRIPES to Mrs. Pearl Coe, our Housemother.

FACULTY RN—what does that mean?
“Well, girls, today we are going to talk about .. .
Neurology—does that come in English?
That’s what I said. No boys allowed in the dorm.
But I couldn’t tell one from the other.
“I don’t mind you sleeping in class, just don’t snore.”
You mean our bones are like Oscar’s?
But we can’t give Mr. Chase an enema!
He says he can’t take anymore.
Did you say only 9 cc’s?
I can’t find it anywhere!
I can’t hear his B/P! Why don’t you try putting the stethoscope in your ears.

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION
Miss Janie Hardwicke, R.N., B.S. Director of Nursing
Rachel Hill, R.N. Recruitment
September 3, 1968, we entered our new home only to
find greased door knobs, crumbs in our clothes, and a routine “cold shower” — our welcome to MMSN.
As the months go by, we travel to college in a
“delapidated VW” to attend a typical “Ivy League?”
school. In Nursing Arts we learn what it’s like being a patient
by giving each other bed baths and “exposing” each other.
But we look forward to other nursing techniques such as
bedpans, enemas, sitz baths, enemas, catheters, enemas. .

ACT II
September 5, 1967, Mount Airy, N. C. and we, the class of 1970, found ourselves
suddenly in the midst of unpacking and orientation. We had come to MMSN with a
definite goal in mind: that of preparing ourselves to become future nurses.
When we first donned our white shoes, hose, and uniform, we thought, “Here is the
picture of a nurse.” But when we were assigned to Second South to arrange flowers, we
felt sure we would fail Fundamentals for watering artificial ones!
Then came summer with O.R., graduation, and finally, a STRIPE. While Juniors, we
“re-expand” our knowledge in conferences on water-sealed drainage; we do care plans; we
gripe over “blue” cards, and eagerly await that Senior year!
18
JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS
President: Gail Gordon; Vice-President: Sherry Wall; Secretary: Mary Lynn Hill; Treasurer: Glenda Moser.
SPONSOR: Mrs. F. Bryant, R.N. “To make the best of all that comes and the least of all that goes.” 19
JUNIORS
“Who’s Gonna Water You When We’re Gone?”
“Speak No Evil, See No Evil, Hear No Evil!”
“Oh, Good Grief”
“Losing My Head Over You”
“Is This The Way The “Boston Strangler” Did It?”
Just one more workbook project, and I’ll go crazy!!!

ACT III
We came, 20 strong, eager yet hesitant. That first year we learned a lot and forgot
much. Our first cats, our first bed, our first enema, our first injection — a whole year of
“firsts.”
Our junior year flew by — system by system. We received our stripe and ordered our
capes. O.B. was gone in a flash, with dim memories of endless contractions and beautiful,
screaming babies.
Then we began our final year with Cincinnati. And no one will ever, ever be able to
forget Peds. Then came Psych, and we knew the end was near.
And now, as we face our final year and graduation day with excitement and State
Boards with dread, we say good luck to each other for this one last dream — to accomplish our goal and take our separate places in the field of nursing.

9. “Yes, Leona, you have to make a choice, either Walter or the dog.”
10. “Do you think Settle will ever make it to Hollywood?”
11. “Uh, Ruth, uh . . . the theoryis _you can’t have two careers.”
12. One first grader to the other: “Just wait until Miss Burcham finds that big rubber spider in her drawer!”

The Last Will and Testament In this age of the atom and jet
We write this record lest we forget,
The 3 long years which have meant so much,
Brought work, friends, and lots of luck.
Our last will and testament we now compose,
The part of sound minds, you’ll have to suppose.
Perhaps to you our bequest may seem worthless,
But to us such things are coveted and priceless.
Our uniforms are worn, our caps still stand high,
To Cincinnati and Butner, and home again,
Brother! What a time it’s been.
It’s time to go and it’s getting late
For us, the class of 1969.
I, Brenda Chandler, will to Judy Westmoreland my ability to write long letters to that special guy
overseas.
I, Brenda Largin, leave my ability to keep my room clean to Mary Hill and Sherry Wall.
I, Linda McCann, will my quietness to Carol Hill, who needs it.
I, Ruth Handy, leave my ability to prepare such “pretty” punch for school functions to Debbie
Moncus.
I, Linda Settle, leave my joy and happiness to those who enjoy life . . . living, giving, and
receiving ... as much as I.
I, Kay Smith, leave my ability to get to class on time to Glenda Moser.
I, Joyce Greenwood, leave my gracefulness, sophistication, and poise to Sherry Wall. I, Joan Leonard, leave to Sherry Wall my ability to maintain a look of innocence in the face of all
accusations—no matter WHAT she’s done!
I, Libby Weddle, will to Mary Hill, my ability to stay out of trouble absolutely and completely. I, Susan Donley, leave to Gail Gordon my empty Christmas stocking to be filled next year for
someone else who is on a “diet.” To Judy Westmoreland, I leave the ability to “count the days” un+il our husbands get home.
I, Rachel Carico, leave my ability to get across the mountain on Fridays in a rattletrap car with four slick tires, an empty gas tank, and bad brakes to anyone who enjoys her weekends as much as I have.
I, Becky Youngblood, leave my ability to grow tall to anyone who enjoys eating.
I, Joyce Burcham, will my ability to remain single and marry-off roommates to anyone who wishes to try.
I, Emma Hudson, leave nothing because everything I have I need. I, Becky Banner .... LEAVE!!
