THE COTTARS - Cape Breton, Canada March, 2011 “The Cottars from Cape Breton are so good and so young that they seem both a miracle and a pure jubilation!” The Boston Herald. The Cottars are by many accounts, the hottest Celtic band to arise out of the rich musical landscape of Cape Breton in many years. They play fiddle, keyboards, whistles, Irish flute, bouzouki, guitar and bodhrans, and they stepdance-all with an authority beyond their years. They also sing haunting Gaelic ballads, and harmonize with a sweetness that brings a tear to the eye. This quartet, Ciarán and Fiona, Claire and Bruce, has become the evolutionary culmination that is now The Cottars. This dynamic Celtic band is comprised of four musicians who have been playing traditional music since childhood. Each is a multi-instrumentalist, singer, and stepdancer. They have entertained national and regional political figures and, in various combinations, have shared the stage with stars such as The Chieftains, Danú, Bruce Cockburn, The Barra MacNeils, Natalie MacMaster, Altan, and many, many others.

In the fall of 2001, during The Celtic Colours Festival, The Cottars were presented with “The Tic Butler Music Award” for the preservation of Cape Breton culture. “The material ranges from traditional balladry to Tom Waits songs, with performances that combine youthful exuberance and a mature virtuosity. Though the instrumental numbers keep the dance floor filled, the lush, supple vocals of Fiona MacGillivray give the music its emotional depth and resonance.”

Flossie Malavialle - Flossie is a French singer who became involved with the English folk music scene in 2001, while she was on a teacher exchange at a high school in the North East of England.

In the last eight years, her profile has gone from strength to strength, playing at folk clubs and festivals all over the UK and Europe. Her collection of nine albums is a reminder of how much work and dedication she has put into her musical career. From well established folk songs to jazz standards, blues numbers to Edith Piaf and

Jacques Brel classics, her wide repertoire always seems to suit every taste. She was chosen by BBC award winning folk duo, Show of Hands, to guest on

their 2009 County Town Autumn Tour of major UK concert hall venues. She has been acknowledged as an upcoming talent by a BBC National Radio 2 presenter, when her rendition of Jacques Brel’s ‘Amsterdam’ was described as the best version he had ever heard.

Keith Donnelly - Geordie bloke Keith is probably best known for his shiny head and unique off-the–wall comedy of the Ros Noble stable. He has written stand up comedy for everyone from Jasper Carrot and Phil Cool to the Telytubbies, but confesses he has kept the best material for his own live shows! In the last ten years Keith has played live at literally thousands of festivals, universities, arts centres and theatres, comedy and folk clubs in the UK, the USA and Australia, as well as being in great demand for After Dinner Speaking and Corporate Events. Whatever the gig, Keith always still plays his trusty old beaten–up acoustic guitar and sings his own compositions.

Flossie and Keith met in 2001 at the Spring Thing Festival in N England and they became firm friends. She really liked his songs, he loved her voice! So a couple of years ago, they decided to team up, quite simply stunning people in the process and started doing festivals together (Warwick, Fairport’s Cropredy,Chippenham . . .) In their concert you will be treated to Keith’s compositions from the duo followed by individual performances with Flossie doing classic covers, which includes some contemporary French songs. The concert concludes with Keith’s comedy act.

The release of their first eponymous album, Dark Horses in January 2010, was timed to coincide with their first major UK tour as support act for the iconic English folk rock band, Fairport Convention.

They begin their Australian tour with the huge Port Fairy Festival in Victoria in early March, then 20 gigs, 17,000km and 3 festivals later they conclude their trip playing in Western Australia.

Singer songwriter Fred Smith has emerged over the last ten years as one of Australia’s most remarkable performing artists. He has toured three continents, and released six acclaimed albums, in-terspersed with stints as a diplomat with Australian military missions in Bougain-ville, Solomon Islands and Afghanistan. He is currently on leave from an assign-ment in Oruzgan province in Southern Afghanistan where he was working with Townsville’s 1 RAR Battalion.

Smith’s songs reflect his experiences in the some of the world’s more difficult places - most recently, a number of songs including Dust of Uruzgan, based on the experiences of two 1 RAR soldiers work-ing there. He also popped out a comic tune called ‘Niet Swaffelen op de dixie’ warning the Dutch soldiers co-located with the ADF in Oruzgan province not to do unspeakable things in the portaloo. The song is apparently a hit on the mili-tary base in Tarin Kowt.

It was his ability to mix imagination with real world experience that caught the attention of critics. His 2002 CD Bagarap Empires, which draws on his experi-ences in war torn Bougainville Island, was described in the Melbourne Age as ‘a stunning marriage of ethereal poetry and hard-nosed realism’. Fred became famous on Bougainville after working with local musicians and the Australian Army to release a ‘Songs of Peace’ cassette, 20,000 copies of which were released around the island. ‘Smith is a superb songwriter with a wry sense of humour and a wonderful eye for the idiosyncrasies of modern life’ (Bruce Elder, Sydney Morning Herald, Nov 2007).

He also lived in the United States for three years touring on the North Ameri-can circuit.

He teamed up with the Spooky Men’s Chorale to release a collection of thinking man’s drinking songs called ‘Urban Sea Shanties’.

Fred will be appearing at The Shack on Friday 2nd April and at Sutherland Acoustic on Thursday 14th. The show will include songs inspired by his experiences in Afghanistan.

In 2007, 2008 & 2009, Loosely Woven, a group of instrumentalists and singers based in Sydney’s Northern Beaches, took shows ‘on the road’ up north performing in conjunction with local musicians in places like Tamworth, Armidale, Grafton, Yamba, Dorrigo, Dungog & Bowraville.

In April 2011 they are doing it again but this time heading west with concerts in Blackheath, Bathurst, Orange and Dubbo. On this occasion Chris Wheeler (Wheelers & Dealers and Pastance) will be performing with them as will members of the Blue Mountains choir ‘The Mudlarks’ and the Blackheath based choir ‘The Heathens’ - all up between 40-60 performers!.

The program will include three original songs as well as the usual eclectic Loosely Woven mix ranging from Holly Near’s powerful ‘Hay Una Mujer Desaparecida’ to Tom Bridge’s harmonic arrangement of Graham Moore’s ‘Tolpuddle Man’ to The Seeker’s hit song ‘I’ll never find another you’ to ‘Da Doo Ron Ron’ as performed by the Topp Twins and from Rogers & Hart’s classic ‘Blue Moon’ to Buddy Holly’s ‘Rave On’!

Instruments this time include: violins, cello, harps, flutes, whistles, saxophones, clarinet, guitars, mandolin, accordion,

glockenspiel, piano, keyboard and percussion. As usual, Loosely Woven will be performing acoustically - no PA system! For more info contact Wayne (02) 9939 8802 [email protected] looselywoven.org

festivals and events 45th National Folk Festival Launched On A Stolen Horse!

Australia’s longest-running festival event, The National Folk Festival, which won the Qantas National Tourism Award for Best Festival Event in 2009, will launch its 45th event to date in April 2011, with a unique program co-presentation alongside the paintings of Sidney Nolan.

The festival, which takes place every Easter (Thursday 21st – Monday 25th April 2011) will be launched on Wednesday 6th April from 11am – 12.30pm – at the Canberra Museum and Gallery in Civic, in a joint presentation with the CMAG’s colourful collection of Sidney Nolan’s Kelly paintings.

The presentation reveals how the iconic paintings of Sidney Nolan’s Kelly Collection are, to quote Nolan, a combination of ‘Kelly’s own words, and Rousseau, and sunlight’ – presented alongside vibrant live music from leading National Folk Festival musicians – adding luster to gallery director Peter Haynes’ experienced insight into the collection.

The Nolan Collection Gallery at CMAG is the permanent home for the Foundation Collection of iconic works by Sidney Nolan and was donated to the people of Australia. It includes fifteen works from the Kelly series and the first of the artist’s Burke and Wills paintings.

The significant collection is explored through a range of visual arts education and community programs available in the classroom. Other works from the Nolan Collection will be shown as part of CMAG’s temporary exhibition program.

The 45th National Folk Festival (NFF) as always, is shaping up to be an Easter Feast of Folk, with another memorable program of events at EPIC in April 2011.

In addition to dedicated music and spoken word performances around the legend of Ned Kelly and Australia’s most infamous Bush Rangers, the kaleidoscopic program of Australian and international musicians is headlined by the legendary Bushwackers Band in an exclusive 40th Birthday Bash.

Other acoustic alumni include Australian singers Shane Howard of Goanna fame and Eric Bogle, renowned Irish singer Andy Irvine, American Old-time music virtuoso Bruce Molsky, Aussie Roots Music stalwarts the Baylor Brothers, wild women of song – Women In Docs, and a whole host of Australia’s and the world’s leading acoustic musicians.

The 2011 festival, which coincides with ANZAC Day on Easter Monday, also features the launch of the NFF’s new annual ANZAC Day commemorative concert – ‘For The Fallen’ – a special concert of music, spoken word and film, kindly sponsored by the ACT Government Festival Fund, tio commemorate those who have fallen in the service of their country.

As a result of its highly successful ‘Rolling The Ball’ fundraising campaign during 2010, the National Folk Festival will be creating one of the biggest dance floors in the country, to house the National’s leading program of dance in many styles from around the world – topped off by a massive exclusive 40th Birthday Bush Dance with the legendary Bushwackers!

For all information concerning the National Folk Festival 2011 go to www.folkfestival.asn.au or phone 1300 235 849.

NOTICEA Special General Meeting of the Folk Federation of NSW is called on 12pm on Friday 22 April in the session bar at the National Folk Festival, Canberra. Perisher Snowy Mountains of Music Festival The Perisher Snowy Mountains of Music Festival is back on the June long weekend - 10-13 June 2011 - for its third year. Perisher

cranked out an unforgettable festival in 2010 with blistering bands, 43cm of snow and record audiences rocking out till late into the night so make sure you make The Snowies the must-see festival this winter. The 2011 festival will once again be one of the most unique festivals in the country with a stellar line-up set to wow Perisher with over 100 concerts at over 8 venues across the resort.

Get set to go wild for muddy punk blues chanteuse Dallas Frasca (pictured centre) - if you haven’t seen Dallas, the Queen of Australian Roots live, you aint seen nothing. Fresh from winning the Telstra Horizon Award at Tamworth The Sunny Cowgirls (right) are the next hot thing in country, and with their tongue-in-cheek melodies and 70,000 albums sold, have shared the stage with the likes of Jimmy Barnes.

Curl up and watch the snow fall to the chilled uplifting harmonies of The Stiff Gins who are on the verge of their much anticipated 3rd album release ‘Wind and Water’. ‘Burn it up fast build it up steady’ with the dark captivating sound of Heath Cullen; and don’t miss iconic Scottish-born folk singer/songwriter Eric Bogle who is best known as the writer of ‘And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda’. Bogle’s lyrical protest songs have earned him the Order of Australia and the UN Peace Medal and they have been recorded by none less than Donovan, Joan Baez, Billy Bragg, The Pogues and The Furies.

Get the mountain jumping with the rip-roaring potent blues pulsing roots of Marshall and the Fro (pictured left); the Middle-East party grooves of Azadoota; floor-packing frenetic gypsy of The Woohoo Revue and The Go Set with its punk-infused folk inspired by The Clash and Radio Birdman.

Children are always welcome at the festival with under 15s free with a paying adult, and a dazzling program to shake their socks off. This year the festival has a special Family Fun Day Ticket and for $39 on Saturday or Sunday a parent can get entry to all venues and to the kids stage, entry to all music workshops, a free ride on the Perisher Quad Express and a 10% Family Discount at the new Smiggins Skating Rink.

Poetry is always one of the highlights, with early-risers enjoying the sun rising over the mountains at poetry breakfasts as well as a na-tional poetry competition and a live poetry slam.

With over 40 bands shaking up a storm from Friday 10th to Monday 13th June, and early bird tickets only $99 and bed and breakfast accommodation and festival packages from $299, this is one very affordable festival. More artist announcements to come, so for all the latest news keep an eye on the website or on Facebook or Twitter. Make sure you don’t miss the 2011 Perisher Snowy Mountains of Music – the only music festival in Australia in the snow.Tickets –■3 Day Earlybird Weekend Festival Pass only $99 Adult/ Child Free with Paying Adult■ 3 night B&B/ Festival Pass packages start from $299■ Earlybird Perisher 3 Day Lift Pass $120 Adult/ $66 Children■Family Fun Day Ticket $49 per person adult on Saturday or Sunday 9am-5pmEarlybird packages close 30 April. Festival Bookings - 1300 655 811 www.snowymountainsofmusic.com.au

St Albans Folk Festival will be held two weeks earlier than normal because Anzac Day falls on Easter Monday! Earlybird tickets are on sale on the new website, www.stalbansfolkfestival.com.au. If you have trouble finding it while the search engines catch up, there are links from the old one at www.snalbansiwarp.com.

Again there will be a stellar line-up including international star Dana Lyons, interstaters Enda Kenny & Lindsay Martin, The April Maze, Quarry Mountain Dead Rats, Daniel Champagne and Mandy Connell and host of others lead by Ami Williamson, the String Contingent, RAPT and the irrepressible Famous Wheeze & Suck Band.

All ‘folk’ genres will be represented from the traditional (Chloe and Jason), bluegrass (Hunter and Suzy Owens), choirs (Ecopella, Bright Star Singers), instrumental (Badja River Quartet, Shiny Top Strings), Irish (Riogh), country (Buck and Deanne) and of course the poets (Peter Mace and the Rhymer from Ryde).

Please see the web-site for a full list of performers and the program. In addition there are details pertaining to accommodation and camping.

As usual, performances will be complemented by a multitude of workshops, a Kids Festival, themed events and Market Stalls catering to festival goers’ culinary tastes and sartorial fashions. Don’t miss it!www.stalbnansfolkfestival.com.au

The Australian Folk Revival: An Historical Chronology. Part 1.1st edition, December 2010. By Brian Samuels

This chronology began life as an appendix to ‘The Folk Revival in South Australia: An Historical Chronology’, a work of about 24 pages which I hope to complete and have published on the Folk Federation of South Australia’s website in the near future. It was simply intended to provide the broader Australian context for what happened in South Australia. However, as can be the way with historical research, I kept tinkering with it and it became more detailed than I had originally planned. Specifically, I have often inserted precise sources and concise contextual statements in the entries and have also tried to record some foundation events for each State and Territory. The text below is close to the final version that will appear in the main work, except that I have inserted two South Australian items (for 1966 and 1971) from the body of that chronology.Naturally I’d appreciate any corrections or suggestions for additions, which should be sent to me at [email protected] chronology is designed to provide an outline of some of the key events in the development of the appreciation and study of Australia’s folk culture as defined by what is generally termed the ‘folk revival’ that began in the 1950s. It does not pretend to be comprehensive. At the State level it focuses on early groups and umbrella organizations and largely excludes folk festivals. With publications it focuses on key early ones and those that provide an overview of the field. It has been compiled principally from published (print and on-line) sources, supplemented by a few email enquiries to try and fill some gaps. I have not so far discovered the foundation dates for the Western Australian, Queensland and Top Half Folk Federations.Chronology1905 - AB Paterson (ed) The Old Bush Songs: Composed and sung in the Bushranging, Digging and Overlanding Days (Angus and Robertson, Sydney), the first published collection of bush songs [55 of them], appeared. It did not contain any music. [The cover title was Old Bush Songs and the ‘The’ was dropped from the title page in the 4th edition. The final (8th) edition over Paterson’s name appeared in 1932.] There have been some expanded editions since, most notably D Stewart and N Keesing (eds) Old Bush Songs (1957; several reprints) and a centenary edition by W Fahey and G Seal (eds) Old Bush Songs (ABC Books, Sydney, 2005). The latter (p6) notes that ‘Banjo’ Paterson started advertising for songs in the Sydney Bulletin in 1895 and outlines the publishing history of the book on pp31-32. [See also H Anderson ‘Some Literary Sources for Old Bush Songs’, Australian Folklore no 12 (1997), pp1-39]1950 - Old Australian Bush Ballads, ‘collected by Vance Palmer’ with ‘music restored by Margaret Sutherland’, was published by Allan & Co. It contained 13 songs, and is notable for being the first booklet of Australian folk songs to include music. Palmer’s Preface records: ‘Versions of many of the ballads included have already appeared in “Old Bush Songs”; others I have gathered gradually from various quarters; and Margaret Sutherland has arranged music for them, calling upon her own instinct for appropriate melody when there was no one who remembered the original tunes’.1951 - John Manifold and Ron Edwards published the Bandicoot Ballads, four broadsides of both words and music in a folder. Ron Edwards later wrote: ‘They created quite a bit of interest at the time, and were I feel, an important factor in the revival that followed. Ballads 5-8 were published in 1953, when I had returned to Victoria and was operating the Ram’s Skull Press, Numbers 9-16 came out in 1955’. [‘Bandicoot Ballads and Other Folk Songs’, Australian Tradition vol 3, no 3 (October 1966), p5]

1952 - John Meredith and some friends formed The Bushwhackers (not to be confused with the later band The Bushwackers). [Chris Kempster ‘The Bushwhackers: Some recollections’ (2002) on Mark Gregory’s Australian Folk Songs web site]1953 - Burl Ives’ Folio of Australian Folk Songs ‘collected and arranged by Dr Percy Jones’ was published by Southern Music Publishing Company, Sydney, and contained 10 songs. Jones had begun collecting in the 1940s, assisted by journalist CS Waight’s daily column in the Melbourne Sun-News Pictorial, but unlike ‘Banjo’ Paterson, had transcribed some of the tunes. When the American Ives toured Australia for the Australian Broadcasting Commission and expressed an interest in Australian folk songs, he was directed to Jones. [See K McKenry ‘Percy Jones: Australia’s Reluctant Folklorist’, Overland no 186 (2007), pp25-33 and ‘The Minstrel Boy’, an anonymous article in the weekly magazine People, 3 December 1952, pp15-17]1953 - Dick Diamond’s Reedy River, a musical drama that included Australian folk songs, was produced by the New Theatre, Melbourne, and subsequently interstate. The Companion to Theatre in Australia (Currency Press, Paddington, 1995) says it ‘dominated New Theatre’s repertoire for four years from 1953, playing to an estimated 450 000 people …’ (p401). [The New Theatre, Sydney, produced two editions of the Reedy River Song Book (cover title) in 1954 and 1960.]1954 -The Australian Folklore Society held its inaugural meeting at John Meredith’s house at Heathcote, near Sydney, on 16 January following an initial meeting in December, but its journal Speewa only lasted two years (1954-55) and the Society itself ceased in about 1958. [See Speewa vol 1 no 1 (April 1954), John Meredith’s ‘Introduction’ in John Meredith & Hugh Anderson Folk Songs of Australia and the Men and Women Who Sang Them (Ure Smith, Sydney, 1967) and ‘Hunting Down the Wild Colonial Boy’ in People, 11 January 1956, pp23-6]1954 - The Bush Music Club was founded in Sydney as a way of managing the large number of people who wanted to join the Bushwhackers. [See John Meredith’s ‘Introduction’ in John Meredith & Hugh Anderson Folk Songs of Australia and the Men and Women Who Sang Them (Ure Smith, Sydney, 1967)]1955 - The Wattle Recording Company was formed in Sydney by architect Peter Hamilton. [Some sources say 1954] For details of its recordings see Mark Gregory’s ‘Australian Folk Songs’ web site http://folkstream.com/reviews/revival/wattle.html1955 - The Folk Lore Society of Victoria was formed in early August at a meeting of about 40 enthusiasts. [Hon. President Alan Marshall, Vice-President Norm O’Connor and Secretary Wendy Lowenstein]SOURCES: The two principal sources used to compile this chronology were Keith McKenry’s ‘Origins of the Australian Folk Revival’, a tribute to the pioneer field collectors of the 1950s from a concert at National Folk Festival, Canberra, Friday 10 April 1997 (available on-line at folkstream.com/reviews/revival/origin.html and GB Davey & G Seal (eds) The Oxford Companion to Australian Folklore (OUP, Melbourne, 1993). GB Davey & G Seal A Guide to Australian Folklore: from Ned Kelly to Aeroplane Jelly (Kangaroo Press, NSW, 2003) was also useful, as were some items in the ‘Articles’ section of Mark Gregory’s ‘Australian Folk Songs’ web site folkstream.com/ and Malcolm Turnbull’s ‘The History of the Australian Folk Revival’ on Warren Fahey’s Australian Folklore Unit website. warrenfahey.com/revival.htm I am also grateful to those individuals who responded to my emails regarding elusive foundation dates and other queries.[This Chronology, Part 1, has been reprinted by kind permission of the author. Parts 2 and 3 will appear in future issues of Cornstalk.]
