beauty, attraction, love, sacredness, purity, youth …. Itdepends on how far the man’s imagination goes.

Life in Germany 1925

After getting married, Otto and Edith Franksettle in Frankfurt. They soon have children:Margot in 19!, and Anne in 199. Those "rstfe# years are ha$$y ones, %ut the economic

crisis em$o#ers &itler's ()*A+. n 19--, &itler takes over as leader of the

erman government. Otto and Edith Frank aredee$ly #orried.

(ot only are they /e#ish %ut the economic crisis

causes $ro%lems too. They look for a means ofesca$e.

They seek shelters in an a$artment %lock called%y them 2secret anne3e4.



EMIGRATING TO

NETHERLANDS

Otto Frank manages to set up a business in

Amsterdam. Edith, Margot and Anne follow him

to the Netherlands. They nd a plae to li!e on

the Merwedeplein.

The Franks feel safe and free again. The

hildren go to shool, Otto works hard on his

business and Edith takes are of the household.

"ut then #orld #ar $ breaks out. On %& May

%'(&, )ermany in!ades the Netherlands. The

Frank family is in danger one more.



With the Netherlands now occupied, lie changes or the Frankamily. Restrictions keep mounting, both or indiiduals and or!tto"s business. When #argot is called up to be sent to a$erman labour camp, !tto and %dith decide the dangers hae

become too great. &hey take their amily into hiding (topic coveredin next slide'.

$re$ared. They have %eenarranging a secret hiding$lace and had already$lanned to go into hiding#ith their daughters on /uly

1!. *ue to Margot5s callu$,the $lanned date is no#moved much closer.

The secret hiding $lace isnearly ready #hen Margotreceives her call u$. Thene3t day the Frank familyleave for the hiding $lace.They think it is toodangerous to #ait anylonger.



+re$aring to go into hiding (2nd)

*t is o /leiman0s idea to make the house behind !tto0s o1ce into

a hiding place.

The hiding $lace is not only for the Franks %ut also for the6an +els family: &ermann and Auguste and their son +eter.&ermann van +els #orks in Otto Frank's %usiness.

&he eening o uly 2 is e3tremely hectic. #embers o !tto0s sta4,who know about the plan, drop by to take as many o the amily0spersonal possessions to the hiding place.

5ery early the ne3t morning, #argot leaes the house 6rst andbicycles with #iep to the hiding place. ) hal hour later, !tto,

%dith and )nne depart. &hey are wearing as many layers oclothing as possible and each o them carries a bag 6lled with theamily"s things. &hey walk to the hiding place in the pouring rain.

Naturally, )nne brings her diary. #uch later, she will look back and

write7 8#y happy9go9lucky, careree school days are gone oreer.:

%eo+es harder on herself& %erating herselffor %eing +ean to the other +e+%ers of theAnnex(



There her diary ends. Two short months after Anne*s

fteenth birthday, and two days after her last diary entry,

the +eret Anne is raided. #e don*t know Anne*s

thoughts or feelings at that point or any time after, but we

know things got worse.

As you probably already know, Anne and the other

members of the Anne were sent to !arious onentrationamps. Anne-s father, Otto Frank, was the sole sur!i!or.
