The Stavros Niarchos Park turns into an open-air cinema, presenting the three-night video art program Fireflies in the Night. Organized by Robert Storr, Dean of the Yale University School of Art, with cura-tors Barbara London, Kalliopi Minioudaki and Francesca Pietropaolo this program of non-stop video screenings features some of the best video art produced internationally in one of the quintessential media of the late 20th and 21st centuries.

A cross between performances of classic Greek plays in an ancient theater and walk-in ‘drive-in’ movie, and projected back-to-back on one or multiple screens, the screenings will take place from dusk till dawn of the following morning. People are encouraged to come-as-they-are, to make themselves comfortable, and stay for as long as they wish. The selection of works to be shown covers a wide and inclusive range of themes, styles, and moods, and brings together works by a lively combination of artists of different generations from Greece and around the world.

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) will be completed and delivered to the Greek State in 2016, offering a new landscape for the 21st century. Designed by Renzo Piano, it includes the new state-of-the-art facilities of the National Library of Greece, the Greek National Opera and the Stavros Niarchos Park, covering an area of 170 acres—85% of the SNFCC’s total area. During its future operation, the open space of the Stavros Niarchos Park will host a multitude of cultural and educational events, with free access for the public.

One of the most significant cultural and environmental projects ever undertaken in Greece, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center is the Stavros Niarchos Foundation’s largest single gift (€566 million /$796 million) and a prime example of a private-public sector partnership, confirming the Foundation’s commitment to the country’s future, at a critical junction of its history. It is also an engine of short- to mid-term economic stimulus.
