Dear St Michael’s Community, On Friday 3 November a number of St Michael's staff were very privileged to attend the wonderful celebration of the Ordination of (now Father) Krish Jonmathavan. Remembrance Day falls on a Saturday this year. We gathered on Friday to remember and pay tribute to the men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice, and to those who returned but would never be the same again. Their message to us then, still resonates strongly with us today; that as a nation we must do everything possible to avoid war at all costs.

“They will not grow old, as we that are left go old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.”

Memorial Mass The annual Memorial Mass for old scholars was held on Thursday in the Chapel at Henley Beach. This is a significant event for the College community. It is our tradition for families and friends of old scholars to come together to remember their loved ones in Mass. It also serves as an opportunity for the College community to acknowledge and show respect to those old scholars and members of our community who have passed away. SMC PASTORAL WORKER It is inevitable that in a school the size of St Michael’s College, many of our students will experience the illness and/or death of a close family member or friend. Many of you are familiar with my involvement with the families of the school. I would like to invite you to call me if there is any assistance I can offer with bereavements, funerals or support for your families during illness or whether it be a visit or prayers. Please don’t hesitate to contact me directly via Email [email protected] and/or mobile: 0432340268. With blessings.

ST MICHAEL’S PRIMARY CAMPUS SPORTS DAY 2017 The annual Primary Campus Sports Day was held on Wednesday 1 November at the Henley Districts Little Athletics Club at Henley Oval. It was great to witness support from so many parents/caregivers and family members cheering on the boys and being a part of the Sports Day spirit. The Junior Primary boys enjoyed and participated in a variety of sporting activities including Rob the Nest, Egg and Spoon Race, Sack Race, Tug ‘O’ War and Hurdles whilst the Middle and Upper Primary students participated in more traditional events such as 70m, 100m, 200m, 800m, Long Jump, Long Throw and High Jump. St John’s went into the day as favourites after winning last year’s Sports Day as well as the internal house cross country carnival earlier this year. At the conclusion of the day, St John’s backed up their recent form to be crowned the 2017 sports day winners in outstanding fashion. Over the course of the day, two records were broken. Special mention to James McGorman who broke both the 10 year old category 200m and 800m events. In the 800m, James surpassed the previous record holder Jake Hall (2016 record holder) with a time of 2 minutes 37 seconds. In addition, James also broke Luke Zille’s record held since 2008 in the 200m with a time of 31.97. The College would like to thank the Charles Sturt Council and Henley Districts Little Athletics Club for their co-operation and allowing the College to use their facilities, the Parent Representative Committee led by Marie Oatway and Deb Ballantyne for their support with the organisation of food stalls on the day. A special thanks to Mario Colella who cooked the BBQ as well as the Beverley staff, Secondary Campus students and the maintenance team who helped set up and transport gear. Final results

• St John (Yellow) 517 • St Paul (Blue) 455 • St James (Green) 429 • St Peter (Red) 375

The College would also like to acknowledge the following businesses and families who made donations for the Sports Day, which were very much appreciated:

• Bakers Delight Findon and Welland • Coles Welland • Henley Beach Foodland • Palmer Family for the donation of the fruit • Romeo’s Foodland • Woolworths Brickworks and Kilkenny

YEAR 12 COLLEGE DEVICE Those students who elected to receive a College issued device for Year 12 in 2017, have the ability to keep this device at no extra cost. However, the software presently installed on the device is licenced to St Michael's College and needs to be altered so the device will continue to operate correctly once the student leaves the College. For this action to occur the device needs to be delivered to the IT Support office by the student it was issued to. The unit should be ready for collection approximately 48 hours later. If you fail to bring your device in this year for software deletion a built-in security feature will be activated and the device will cease working in 2018. Please ensure you have backed up all your work before you bring the device in. All existing work on the device could be lost. You will need to bring ID with you to collect or we will not be able to hand your device back to you, for security reasons. The last day for devices to be collected is Friday 15 December 2017. We will not accept devices for wiping in 2018. Any devices which have been handed in to be cleared and not collected by this date, will be forfeited to the College and will not be available for collection in 2018. Please make sure you pick up your device.

YEAR 11 BUSINESS WEEK: 31 OCTOBER – 3 NOVEMBER Last week students in one of the Year 11 Business and Enterprise classes participated in Business week. Part of their course requires them to complete a practical activity. Students, working in groups of four or five, are allocated to specific roles such as Chief Executive Officer and Finance and Marketing. Each group decides on a product that they would like to sell. They develop a business plan, decide how they will market their product and at the end of the week and prepare a profit and loss statement. The profit of over $1200 was donated to the Lasallian Foundation. Chips and Gravy “For business week, our group sold chips and gravy. The goal of business week was to sell as much of our product to consumers as possible and to make a profit. We learnt a lot about how a business works. Throughout the week, we were successful in selling out every day. In order for our business to be successful, we all contributed and worked well together.” Talia Romeo 11PE Absolute Bellas My group for business week decided to sell Absolute Bellas. Our product was worth $8 and included chips, meat and many different sauces to go with it. Everyone in the group had a role to play so our business was able to run well. Overall, it was a great experience for all of us as we learnt what it was like to work together to sell our product.” Daniel Fedele 11PZ Doughmelos Pizza “Our business week idea was to sell Dominos pizzas for $2 a slice to Years 8-11. Each person in our group had their own role for our business to run. Our group members had a few difficulties as some of our members were away prior to the start of business week and we had to try to fill their position. Setting up a small business like this is quite difficult and it made us all realise the importance of each of our roles. It was a great experience.” Adrian Pisaniello 11PI Rockin’ Robbie’s Gourmet Burgers “My group sold bacon cheeseburgers to the community of St Michael’s for a low price of $5 per burger and $7 for a burger and chips. This experience for me was great as my group members were able to raise a substantial amount of money for the De La Salle Foundation. From this experience, I learnt about the essentials of starting a business and also how to keep a business running successfully. This experience was definitely worthwhile for our group.” Santo Perrotta 11GT St Maccas Cheese Burgers “Business week tends to be a stressful but exhilarating time for the Year 11 Business students. Our group, St Maccas, bought hamburgers from McDonald’s and sold each hamburger for $2 each. We were unsure as to whether we would sell out as we were selling a product that was competing against other burgers. Although this experience was nerve-wracking for everyone in our group, we managed to pull through and earn enough profit to pay back the loan from the school. This experience gave us an insight into the business world and the choices we might have to make as business owners.” Maitena Perez 11PE

Mrs Cathy James

YEAR 11 DRAMA – “GIRL ASLEEP” The Year 11 Drama class wrapped up an awesome season of “Girl Asleep” last week showcasing their amazing talents onstage and off. The production reminded audiences to be true to themselves as young people and always sing their own song. The SMC community looks forward to seeing many of these students strut their stuff in 2018 as the Year 12 Drama class.

JOBEX SATURDAY 11 NOVEMBER CONVENTION CENTRE Jobex is SA’s largest free Employment and Careers exhibition, which showcases five growing sectors of the SA economy they include: Defence and Ship Building, Renewable Energy and Mining, Health and Biomedical Industries, Tourism Food and Wine and IT & Hi Tech Manufacturing. Pre-registration is required. See: https://jobex.sa.gov.au/registration/. With the representation of many major employers it would be a valuable opportunity to investigate Work Experience opportunities, traineeship opportunities and preferred study pathways to employment in these growing sectors.

YEAR 12 UPDATE We received news from Flinders University that for many of their courses with “mid-range” ATARS and below, they will be considering an additional RANK calculation as a basis for entry. The Rank will comprise 60% ATAR and 40% scaled Research Project score. This rank will be calculated by SATAC and provided to Flinders. For a list of eligible courses students can check: https://www.flinders.edu.au/study/pathways/year-12-entry/research-project.

WORK EXPERIENCE 4- 8 DECEMBER 2017 This week students attended the compulsory training session and are now almost finished finalising their paperwork. There are two documents that must be completed, signed and returned to Student Services by Friday 17 November if a work experience placement has been organised for Term 4. Copies of these forms are available in Student Services and on the College intranet on the work experience page. Once these forms are completed, signed and returned, students will be booked in with Mr Vizaniaris or Mr Woolford for a risk assessment. No student will be authorised to undertake a placement until after this risk assessment is completed. If you have any questions, please contact Mr Vizaniaris via email [email protected] or Ph: 8356 5966.

SARDI AQUATIC SCIENCES WEST BEACH OPEN DAY SARDI open day is on Sunday 19 November and includes many activities, tours and speakers to inspire careers in Aquatic Sciences. See: http://pir.sa.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0007/297691/SARDI_Open_Day_Brochure.PDF

YEAR 10 AND YEAR 11 STUDENTS INTERESTED IN A COOKING COMPETITION 2018 The Australian Culinary Federation of SA have invited St Michael’s College to nominate interested “foodies” to participate in the 2018 Secondary Schools Culinary Challenge. Students are nominated in pairs and must be studying a Hospitality course. The competition will be held on Monday 25 June 2018 at Regency TAFE. Interested students can visit Student Services to collect a handout. Please note there is a $25 entry fee. See: http://austculinary.com.au

APPRENTICESHIP AND TRAINEESHIP OPPORTUNITIES We have been emailing Year 10 students about opportunities for a school based AFL Sports Ready Traineeships in 2018. The latest two we have advertised involve attending the workplace one day a week for paid employment and undertaking some additional training in the school holiday periods. At the completion of the traineeship students will have achieved a Certificate III which contributes to their ATAR. The downside is that whilst they are supported with a study line to complete the traineeship, it does mean they miss a day a week of scheduled lessons back here at school. Students who are very well organized and not doing academic intensive subjects have in the past generally coped well See: https://www.aflsportsready.com.au/jobs-board/sa Acromat at Mile End are Australian leaders in fabrication of steel products for the Sporting, Gymnastic and Seating industry and are currently offering apprenticeships in Certificate III Engineering starting in January 2018. Please visit www.acromat.com.au for more information or phone 8352 2288.

AOXBRIDGE ACADEMIC PROGRAMS 2018 We do not recommend or endorse any external programs but provide this information for the families own consideration assessment. Year 8- Year 12 students are invited to apply for one of the Oxbridge 2018 Term 1 holiday programs. This year we had two St Michael’s students awarded scholarships to attend one of these programs. The programs operate in a variety of cities and across many different subject areas. There are offerings at Cambridge University, Oxford University Academia in Barcelona, L’Academie de Paris, Columbia University, Yale and many other institutions. A limited number of scholarships are available and the first round of deadlines to apply for these begins Friday 15 December 2017. The cost of these programs (not including airfares) vary from $2550 to $8300. Please visit: www.oxbridgeprograms.com.

INNOVATIVE ASSOCIATION AWARD 2017 In 2015 an inactive SAADIE, with four members, re-emerged as Drama South Australia (DSA) under Mrs Giselle Becker’s leadership as President of a new executive group who joined together with passion and a commitment to reconnect Drama educators in South Australia. There are now 81 members consisting of corporate, individual and student membership. Since mid-2015, DSA has delivered professional learning model that has included free beginning of the year events to all members, a state conference, resource swaps, a Combined Arts Conference with the other four arts associations, a senior drama forum that included feedback from members being sent to SACE, Technology in Drama (interstate presenter who is a Microsoft Educator), Practical skills workshops and a year long Primary PLC in partnership with Windmill Theatre. These offerings have spanned opportunities for teachers of early years to senior secondary.

A big congratulations to Mrs Becker who has recently moved onto the national Drama Australia Board as the Director of Special Projects, Guidelines and ADEM. Mrs Becker will continue to advocate for the work of Drama educators and their students in this role, with a special focus on gathering stories of exemplary practice from around the country.
