The Star A Catholic School committed to the Lasallian Vision of Education TERM 1 WEEK 11 – 13 APRIL 2018 – ISSUE 11/18 Dear St Michael’s College Community, Terry MacDermot’s Retirement It is with great regret that we farewell Mr Terry MacDermot, who will be retiring at the end of Term 1. Terry has been an outstanding servant of the College over the last 30 years, gaining the personal and professional respect of staff, students and families alike through his work as a Visual Art teacher, Head of Department and Golf Coordinator. His talent, skill, care, humour and dedication will be fondly remembered and sorely missed at St Michael’s. Terry has loved his time at St Michael’s College, though now has other ventures he is ready to pursue. I’m sure I speak on behalf of the St Michael’s College community in thanking and congratulating Terry, as well as wishing him all the very best in the new phase of life. End of Term A quick look back at the Term 1 calendar gives a clear indication of the vibrancy of life at St Michael’s College. In addition to the ongoing core commitment to teaching and learning, you will find a range of opportunities undertaken across the College this term, including: campus leadership and social justice programs, summer sport and co-curricular activities, parent welcome evenings, campus and family Masses, Ash Wednesday celebrations, seminar/reflection days, Sacramental preparation, Year 8 camps, ‘De La Sauce’, sports days, x-country house day, swimming and athletics carnivals, College tours, Arts Week, music and drama performances, curriculum excursions, Carnevale, pastoral/curriculum presentations and performances, Night at the Museum, Easter Liturgies, garden activities, Harmony Day and, of course Mission Action Day. As we come to the end of a productive term, I’d like to thank staff, students and families for your ongoing support, commitment and partnership. Reports, Parent/Student/Teacher Interviews and Portfolio Conference Evening As you are aware, Secondary Campus reports will be available online through SEQTA at the end of term. Whilst parents have had ongoing access to real time assessment data through SEQTA during the term, these interim reports are designed to provide a summary of assessments for each subject. This is always a good time to reflect on the learning and achievement of each student and perhaps reset goals for the remainder of the year. The reports will also be a useful catalyst for discussions with teachers during the upcoming Parent/Student/Teacher evening to be held at the Secondary campus early next term. Please also note that the rescheduled Primary Campus Portfolio Conference Evening will be held on Tuesday 8 May. Thank you to all Primary families for your understanding and support with the rescheduling. Live Jesus in our hearts! MISSION ACTION DAY – THANK YOU Many thanks to all parents, students and staff who supported MAD 2018. All students and staff had a fantastic day and the weather could not have been more perfect. Once again, the generosity of the College community has been overwhelming and as of today, the amount donated is just over $47,000. St Michael's College has again demonstrated that community spirit is alive and well. It was wonderful to see the students engaging in their activity, building new friendships, interacting positively with their teachers and generally having a terrific time. Once again, a huge thank you to all involved and for the way you embraced the day. Mr Sam Kitschke - Director of Pastoral - Secondary Campus and Mr Matt Rowlands - Director Student Wellbeing & Administration - Primary Campus

SAVE THE DATE! MAD QUIZ NIGHT 2018 Once again, MAD Quiz Night is fast approaching and will be held on Friday 25 May at 7.00pm. PARENT/TEACHER INTERVIEWS In Term 2, Parent/Teacher Interviews are scheduled for: • Years 7 - 9: Wednesday 2 May • Years 10 - 12: Tuesday 8 May Parents/caregivers are welcome to request appointments for appropriate events. An email containing information regarding the process will be forwarded to families on Tuesday 17 April (during term break).

Should you have any queries during the term break please call Lynda White on 8150 2368 or email [email protected] Please be advised that the Term 1 report enables Subject Teachers to request an interview with parents/caregivers. Whilst it is up to the parents/caregivers to take up the offer, you are encouraged to accept the opportunity to discuss your child’s progress. Every attempt will be made to ensure that interviews requested by teachers and parents/caregivers are allocated; however, in some cases this may not be possible due to the demands and constraints of the program. To make the most of the interview it is important to be prepared. Before meeting with the teacher plan specific questions you wish to ask and identify factors of which teachers may need to be aware. The interview process should be seen as an opportunity for a two-way discussion where the interests of your child are important considerations for both parties. We also strongly encourage students to attend the interviews in order to enhance the conversation and to hear constructive feedback firsthand. After the interview, it is important for parents to follow up with their son or daughter, on matters discussed. Acknowledge strengths, identify areas where improvements can be made and encourage your child to take responsibility for his/her own learning. The timeline for both events is detailed below. We look forward to seeing you and your child. TIMELINE OF PARENT/TEACHER INTERVIEW PROCESS TERM 2 2018

NEWS FROM YEAR 9 PASTORAL CARE As the term comes to a close, we have been able to explore some valuable learning experiences in Year 9. In Week 9, Library staff, Mrs Pepe-Micholos and Mrs Coleman presented a session which was focused on digital citizenship and literacy. While this session summarised the learning of earlier material elaborated by Brainstorm Productions and the Sonya Ryan presentation, it also focused on the literacy aspects of the digital world. The presentation will soon be available on the Year 9 Pastoral Care page on SEQTA. This Wednesday 4 April, an introduction to Wing Chun for boys’ classes was facilitated by Adelaide Wing Chun Academy. Wing Chun is an ancient martial art, which intends to use mindful action rather than muscle. It includes the intent to be free from the need to impress others with physical prowess. There is an aim to be understanding, accepting and kind without the fear of being thought weak for kindness. The philosophy endeavours to help each person tap into the inner power and to take control of and be responsible for their own life. It is designed to help recognise how using positive energy and accomplishing goals of a positive nature are so much more powerful than negative thought and deed. Click here to access further resources. This fits in well with our discussion of character strengths and being the best we can be in Year 9. It was wonderful to see the boys participating with open minds, with the right amount of zest and curiosity and with a helpful dose of teamwork! The girls’ classes, who are working on teambuilding will experience Wing Chun at the end of next term.

Ms Tonia Carfora - Year 9 Director

STAGE 2 PE STUDENTS On Tuesday 10 April, the Stage 2 PE students attended the UniSA Connect to Exercise & Sport Science Conference at the City East campus. Students attended five workshops and two keynote speakers covered topics such as training in altered environments, brain to muscle and how we move, objective measure of exercise load, exercise physiology and energy systems, and biomechanics, technology and sport psychology. It was a fantastic opportunity for students to experience the facilities at the University and apply theoretical course content throughout the interactive workshops.

HOST FAMILY/FAMILIES NEEDED A student from our sister school in Italy would like to attend St Michael's College on a semester-long exchange in Semester 2. The student is 16 years of age and currently completing the equivalent of Year 11 in Italy. He will be placed in a Year 11 class at St Michael's and is currently engaged in a bilingual education program where some of his subjects are taught in Italian and others in English. Whilst host families are not required to speak Italian, students studying Italian would benefit from the opportunity to practise their Italian with him. Expressions of interest are urgently required in order to accommodate the family's request, so that they can book flights from Italy in time for his commencement at St Michael's in July. Families will receive payment in exchange for hosting to assist with living expenses. Please call me at the College ASAP if you are in a position to assist. Ms Angela Benedetti - Italian Coordinator

YEAR 11 ART AND DESIGN The Year 11 Art and Design students spent last Wednesday 4 May, collecting imagery for their major practical works and folios. The Adelaide Zoo and Botanic Gardens worked in harmony with the weather to provide a bounty of visual material for Art students to draw, paint and photograph. This imagery will be developed in class and will form the foundation of major practical artworks including a fashion collection inspired by birds and a redesign of the Botanic Café including new graphics, signage, menus for the Zoo Café and party graphics and packaging for a children’s Zoo party. The students look forward to sharing their results.

YEAR 7 RETREAT On Thursday 5 April, the Year 7 students participated in a retreat experience at the Grange Surf Club. Our Lasallian Youth Ministers, Calia Sandona and Scott Hanel along with Youth Ministers, Caleb and Matt from St Bede’s College in Melbourne ran a program with the theme of relationships and leadership. Year 11 Lasallian Youth Leaders (LYL) ran small group sessions providing students with the opportunity to examine what makes a positive or negative relationship. They examined the qualities of famous leaders and spent time exploring what leadership is in a general sense and more specifically in a Lasallian sense. Students engaged in an activity to examine relationships and the different experiences we have that helps us grow as individuals and a community. The day was interspersed with lots of fun games and activities on the beach. The staff and LYL’s involved appreciated the cooperation and enthusiasm of the students. “The Year 7 classes had a retreat day at Grange beach. The day focused around building relationships with each other. It was refreshing to have something different rather than our usual classes. We had numerous conversations in our small groups about what makes a positive and negative relationship. We also had plenty of breaks where we played games named ‘Dragon Egg’ and the crowd favourite ‘Jockeys Up’. We had pizza for lunch and played on the beach. The end of the day was the best because we played more ‘Jockeys Up’ and tied strings to symbolise our connections to one another.” Joseph Del Giglio (7BPC-02) “On the Year 7 retreat day we went to the Grange Surf Life Saving Club. We learnt about leadership, actions and relationships. We had guests come all the way from Melbourne, Matt and Caleb, as well as our Lasallian Youth Ministers, Calia and Scott. We played some fun games to improve our focus, which included ‘Jockeys Up’ and ‘Dragon Egg’. At recess and lunch, we went to the nearby beach and played some beach sports and games. Some of these included beach footy, soccer and cricket. We ended up having lots of fun and learnt many new things. This was a fun day for us, as we have never done anything like this before. SMC @ THE BIG DAY IN IT The Big Day in IT is a national conference designed for both high school and university students interested in careers in technology. On Thursday 5 April, teachers from the Digital Technologies Department accompanied 26 IT career-minded students to the University of Adelaide for an opportunity to listen to keynote speakers from some of the most influential industry leaders in IT. These included Microsoft, SA Power Networks, IBM, WiseTech Global, Novus Res and AXIOS, as well as the Australian Government ICT Cadetship Program and the Cyber Security Division of the Department of Human Services. Students were encouraged to consider the part that they will play in the futures of technology and asked to explore and discuss the future developments of AI, augmented reality, cyber security and big data. The day allowed students the opportunity to ask questions and seek guidance from leaders in the IT industry.

LEARNING ABOUT ARCHITECTURE, ART AND AUSTRALIAN HISTORY IN ITALIAN

Last month, the Year 9 Italian students learned about architecture and Adelaide’s history in Italian while looking for Italy in Adelaide. Four classes travelled to the CBD to look for evidence of Italy’s influence on the city of Adelaide. Teachers led the tours predominantly in Italian, immersing the students in new language, Australian history and architectural knowledge. The students were asked to examine public art, make observations and name the architectural features of many buildings and notice the Italian presence in the Central Market. Through this excursion, not only did students find strong evidence of Italian influences, they also developed their knowledge of architectural features, how the Treasury Building got its name and what Parliament House was actually supposed to look like before the money ran dry and the design had to be scaled back. They learned of the reason behind Colonel William Light’s design of Adelaide, Edmund Wright’s fascination with Italian Renaissance artists and the connection between that passion and the faces on the Town Hall. They learned that Edmund Wright was not only the Mayor of the city of Adelaide; he was also the architect

responsible for Town Hall’s design, along with a number of other prominent buildings. In addition, they learned about Venus, the first public work of art erected in Adelaide and the inspiration behind Rundle Mall’s famous bronze pigs. A display inside Adelaide Arcade made the connection between its design and the cathedrals in Florence and Rome particularly difficult to ignore. It was hard not to notice the strong connections Adelaide has with Italian culture, given the multitude of Corinthian, Doric and Ionic columns, balustrades, pediments, porticoes and acanthus leaves embellishing buildings across Adelaide and the presence of Italian foods at the Central Market. The students learned to look at Adelaide through different eyes, and gained a new appreciation of the impact Italy has had on Adelaide. This new perspective will ensure they never look at the city the same way again. Ms Angela Benedetti - Italian Coordinator

LINKING ITALIAN AND DRAMA On Tuesday 10 April, the Year 8 students were kept in stitches of laughter by Melbourne-based theatre troupe, Make-A-Scene, who performed their latest show, Fooling in Love. In true Commedia dell’arte style, performers, Rosa and Jasper, interacted with the audience with hilarious outcomes. Students had roles as Mt Vesuvius, residents of Pompeii and the ocean, and later bridesmaids and flower-bearers, as well as offering advice to Colombina about her relationship problems. Developed in Italy in the 16th Century, Commedia dell’arte is a theatre style, which was the foundation of slap-stick comedy and modern television sitcoms. Our travelling performers brought to life stock characters (Colombina, Arlecchino, Pantalone, Pulcinella and a unique Russian version of the Spanish Capitano) based on common stereotypes, in a modern-day setting. Traditional leather masks made in Italy enabled them to quickly switch characters, made even more obvious by their clever use of body language, animal-like movements and altered voices. The performance incorporated socio-political gags, with Pantalone stating he wanted to “make Naples great again” and “build a wall” reflecting the fact that in Italy politicians are often the subject of ridicule (and nowhere more than in Viareggio, Tuscany, during Carnevale). During Carnevale and indeed in Commedia dell’arte shows, anyone is fair game, as our students and staff discovered! At the end of the performance, the actors discussed their theatre training, which included intensive study in Italy and New York, as well as circus training. They have cleverly combined their craft with Italian and created a niche market: Italian is the second most widely taught language in Australia after Japanese, so as a bilingual show, it caters for a particular audience and guarantees them opportunities to work in schools where Italian is taught. Actors often have to play roles which require different accents or conversations in other languages. Did you know that many famous actors speak different languages? Some even work on entire films is other languages. Budding actors never know when their intercultural language skills are going to come in handy!

SENIOR NAZARETH TRIAL MATCHES On Tuesday and Wednesday this week St Michael’s College took on Nazareth in a range of Senior Trial matches in preparation for the upcoming winter Term 2/3 winter sport season. Amongst the matches was the boys senior football group, who hosted Nazareth College on Tuesday afternoon. It was fantastic to see most of the playing group out on a hot afternoon with the boys putting on a strong showing. On Wednesday afternoon the Senior Boys and Girls Soccer, Open A1 Netball & Open A Boys Basketball teams headed over to Nazareth College. It was another warm afternoon but all teams competed strongly and SMC should be happy with their performance. Thank you and well done to all teams who will now look towards the 2018 Caica Cup in Week 1 next term for their next hit out before the official season starts.
