The Star A Catholic School committed to the Lasallian Vision of Education

TERM 2 WEEK 9 - 29 JUNE 2018 ISSUE 20/18Dear St Michael’s College Community,

Below is a message from the Superior General of the De La Salle Brothers, Brother Robert Schieler, informing that 2019 is the Jubilee Year, in honour of the 300th anniversary of the death of our Founder, St John Baptist De La Salle. Further, Br Robert invites all of us to celebrate the jubilee through practical acts of kindness and service to young people yearning for mercy and compassion. During 2019, St Michael’s College will celebrate the tercentenary in solidarity with our Lasallian family across the world.

Dear Brothers, Partners, Students and all members of the Lasallian Family,I am very pleased to inform you that the Holy See has declared 2019 a Jubilee Year in honour of the 300th anniversary of the death of Saint John Baptist De La Salle.

The Jubilee Year will begin on Saturday 17 November 2018, when we recall the dedication of the sanctuary of Saint John Baptist de la Salle at the Generalate in Rome. The Jubilee Year will conclude on Tuesday 31 December 2019, the end of the tercentenary and Year of Lasallian vocations.

A Jubilee Year offers the opportunity to express our faith through concrete actions in favour of those most in need. I invite all of you to celebrate the jubilee through practical acts of kindness and service to young people yearning for mercy and compassion.

Traditionally a Jubilee Year is also an occasion for pilgrimage. The goal of a pilgrimage is to visit places imbued with spiritual significance and the experience of God’s presence.

I encourage each of you to become a pilgrim during the Jubilee Year. Let your pilgrimage take you “beyond borders” to places that inspire you with a sense of God’s presence and to poor and vulnerable people who are occasions to encounter Jesus Christ.

Pope Francis reminds us that:

Our existence is a pilgrimage, a journey. Even those who are inspired by simply human hope, perceive the allure of the horizon, which urges them to explore worlds they do not yet know. Our spirit is a migrant spirit.

We do not become mature men and women if we do not perceive the allure of the horizon: that boundary between earth and sky which demands to be reached by a people that walks.

Let us joyfully celebrate the Jubilee Year as an expression of our commitment to live the Gospel and the Lasallian Mission united as Lasallians with one heart, one commitment, one life.

Brother Robert Schieler, FSCBrother Superior

CAD/RADLast Wednesday and Thursday Year 10 students were engaged in the annual CAD/RAD program. Church Awareness Day, is designed to provide our students a practical insight into the works of a number of Adelaide organisations focussed on helping those most in need. RAD, or Reflection Activity Day, challenges students to reflect on their relationships, their priorities and the direction of their lives as they enter their senior years of schooling. Pleasingly, the College has been contacted by a number of families expressing the positive impact the days have had on their son or daughter and highlighting again that service projects and outreach programs bring the poor’s voice into the lives of students and enriches the College community through action to help meet the needs of others.

Live Jesus in our Hearts!

PRIMARY CAMPUS

YEAR 6 COLOURS OF IMPRESSIONISM EXCURSION TO THE ART GALLERY SAYear 6 classes were blessed with a beautiful winter’s day for an opportunity to visit the Art Gallery of South Australia and the riverside of the Torrens. Both classes were given an expertly conducted guided tour of the exhibition of the Impressionist Masters and lesser-known Impressionist Artists. The boys asked insightful questions and really observed the artworks which showed a mature understanding of visual arts and what the artists were capturing. Soon favourite artists were chosen and the boys took many photographs with their iPads.

While one class had the guided tour, the other class had a drawing session by the River Torrens. This practice of painting in the open air was also done by the Impressionists and is known as ”Plein-Air”. The only difference being some students used a pencil and paper to sketch the scene while others used their iPads to draw with their fingers using apps such as “Sketches” or “You Doodle Pro”. The results were diverse and showed immersion in the environment. The process of drawing is not just about the end-product, but the act of being in the moment and observing what you see in front of you “in situ”.

“My favourite painting was done by Paul Signac. It is my favourite painting because it is very colourful.” Ryan Ballantyne“My favourite bit was when we saw all of the little dots at the third stop.” Darcy Clift“My favourite painting would be the Everyday life waitress one.” Kristian De Candia“My favourite painting was the magpie (la pie) because of all its detail and all the ‘snow’.” Alexander Dessaur“My favourite painting was the magpie by Claude Monet. I also learnt that when painters paint snow it isn’t pure white. Also impressionist usually paint outside.” Matthew Nguyen

This is designed to assist students to identify possible career paths. Various Parent Information Nights are scheduled to explain the subject selection process and SACE Certificate requirements and the College recommends parents to attend these if at all possible.

YEAR 9 GIRLS DRAMA - THE REDEMPTION OF GERTIE GREENEOn Tuesday 26 June, students in Year 9 Drama performed in their semester performance ‘The Redemption of Gertie Greene’. The girls worked tirelessly over the last ten weeks to present a one act play that explored themes of bullying, gossip, peer pressure, stereotypes and ultimately, the pressures of high school. The students performed in both a matinee performance to Year 8 students and an evening show for both friends and family. It was a great success for all students involved!

HINDLEY STREET COUNTRY CLUB - MUSIC RECORDING SESSIONThis week a group of Year 8 - 12 music students had a remarkable experience working with some of Adelaide’s best musicians from the Hindley Street Country Club (HSCC). The HSCC is a collaboration of experienced musicians who have been working on studio recordings and music videos for the past 12 months and their Facebook and YouTube pages are hugely popular throughout Australia’s musical community.

On Tuesday, students were privileged to record two songs with the talented musicians. The first song, Journey’s classic ‘Don’t Stop Believing’ featured Danny Lopresto from Clearway on lead vocal with members of the College Choir singing backing harmonies.

The second song was the brainchild of SMC old scholar and legendary Zep Boys vocalist Vince Contarino. The song ‘Urge for Going’ by Joni Mitchell featured the band along with three students playing Flugelhorn, Flute and Trombone. The song was arranged by Vince and Tim Donovan and was a departure from the usual rock ballad style.

The day enabled the students to learn by observation and collaboration with these highly accomplished and professional musicians. Students absolutely loved the experience and look forward to seeing the results in forthcoming music videos which will be produced by the HSCC and uploaded to their channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPbEcJyVcETaWrubYOg4UTw.

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS ATHLETICS CARNIVAL - PRIMARYOn Monday 18 June, the annual Catholic Schools (Section 1) Athletics Carnival was held at the SA Athletics Stadium. In this prestigious event St Michael’s Primary competed against nine other Catholic schools from across the State. The boys competed in traditional athletics events including shot put, long jump, high jump, hurdles, running events, relays and pentathlon. The students were up for the challenge and showed great passion and determination. At the conclusion of the carnival SMC finished in third place. Congratulations to all the boys involved. Special mention to the U/10 age group that were crowned as the best overall team for the day and to James McGorman who won the Individual Athletics Age field champion for the U/11 Division.

Mr Dion Gazettas - Primary Sports Co-curricular Coordinator

U/15 GIRLS VS MERCEDES KNOCKOUT FOOTBALLSMC ventured to Merecedes College to take on last year’s grand finalist in the next Knockout round of the U/15 Girl’s Football. The game started quickly with a fairly even first quarter before Mercedes began their ascendancy from the second quarter onward. SMC played well but were challenged in every aspect of the game. Injuries took their toll and as the game progressed SMC knew that they were in for a hard fought battle. Eventually, Mercedes came out on top and the SMC U/15s gave their best on the day. Special mentions go to the Captain, Demi Bates and Avah Topp who both contested hard all day, as well as Amelia Hartwig in the Ruck and Tasmyn Fiegert up forward and on the ball. We wish the girls well for the rest of the year.

Mr Andrew Spencer - Girls Football Coach

CONGRATULATIONS TO...

OLD SCHOLARS

Lauren Hoffmann (9GPC-02) and Maddy Freer (9GPC-02) on their selection to represent South Australia Metro at the U/16 Australian Basketball Championships to be held on the Sunshine Coast from Friday 6 July to Friday 13 July. In addition, both Lauren and Maddy have been chosen by their peers and coaches to be part of the Players Leadership Group.

Old scholar Anthony Marafioti (1980) is returing to centre stage with his world class band to pay tribute to the Piano Man. Following a sell-out Australian Theatre Tour in 2017, Piano Man Billy Joel Tribute Concert will take the show back to major capital cities as well as regional towns right across Australia.

Anthony is also raising funds and awareness for the debilitating disease, Multiple Sclerosis, with part proceeds of ticket sales to be donated to MS Australia. Anthony was diagnosed with MS in 2016, however his passion for music and performing helps fight his battle and is looking to support the many other sufferers throughout Australia.

The full live band consists of the finest musicians around, plus state of the art sound and lighting, in a powerful tribute show that will delight audiences with all the Billy Joel hits such as “Piano Man”, “New York State Of Mind”, “Honesty”, “It’s Still Rock’n’roll To Me”, “Uptown Girl”, “We Didn’t Start The Fire”, “River Of Dreams” plus many more.

Show your support and allow Anthony to take you right into the world of Billy Joel in a two hour concert event not to be missed! Purchase your tickets online via the link http://premier.ticketek.com.au/Shows/Show.aspx?sh=BILLYJOE18
