Dedication

TO THE SAINT MARY'S STUDENT

Because she has shown that she is capable of being a good school citizen; by

her earnest participation in worship, self government, study, the arts, sports,

and pleasant relaxation; and thus in time to come, she may be a good world

citizen

STUDENT GOVERNMENT OFFICERS

Seated: Dawson, Fulton. Standing: Guion, DesChamps, Parker, Johnson.

KATHRYN FULTON Kathryn meets the twenty-four-hour-a-day demands of her office as President of

Student Government with unfailing cheerfulness, understanding, and thoroughness.

PO!\CIE DAWSON Additional proof that the best things come in small packages is the amazing energy

and efficiency with which vivacious Poncie solves the problems of dorm life, as

Chairman of the Hall Council.

CAROLYN DESCHAMPS In spite of a deceivingly mischievous gleam in her eye. Carolyn's activities as vice

president of the Student Government do much to bring the organization and the girls

together.

JANE LEE PARKER With soft words and winning smile, Jane Lee carries out well her duties as leader of

the day students.

EMMA KATIE GUION Hall Council Secretary. Emma Katie, manages the tedious yet essential records of

this body, and makes the girls like it.

KATE JOHNSON Careful and conscientious, Kate is the model student government secretary.

THE HONOR COUNCIL

Forcefully yet with complete simplicity, this supreme court functions as the backbone of our student

government. The personal integrity of the members of this body embodies to every girl the spirit behind

the law. Their wise and understanding enforcement of regulations makes a system of self responsibility

and honor possible at Saint Mary's.

14

Page 19: The Stagecoach

THE HALL COUNCIL

The Hall Council, the guiding hands in our day-to-day activities, is the organization upon which the

burden of our recent innovations in student government has fallen. In attempting, little by little, to

build a system of true self government, we have this year placed the regulation of our dorm life almost

wholly in the hands of these girls. They have taken up the responsibility, and with firm but friendly tactics

steered the new system successfully through its maiden voyage.

Seated: James. Gurley, Boyce. Guion. l.iltle. Dawson, chairman ; Lee. Martin. Redwine. \ ance. Slater. Hines. L. P. Standing: Billings

Campbell, Miss Hopkins, adviser; Royall. Chappell, Williams. F.. Walkins. Mardre, Buchanan. Fulton. Pinekney. Baskeivill. DesChampsClinard. !\ot photographed : Elliott.

THE LEGISLATIVE BODY

The Legislative Body, unique in that it is the sole school organization in which every student has a

voice, is the medium through which each girl can contribute toward meeting the needs and furthering the

growth of her government. This Congress, which receives, considers, and judges petitions, makes possible

the direct influence of each girl on the system which regulates her behavior. To its members fall the difficult

tasks of foreseeing the possible value and suitability of each request. Their discretion and fair judgment

enable us to maintain an effective yet progressive student government at Saint Mary's.

Front row: Dawson. Marclre. Swindell, student chairman; Miss Duckett, faculty chairman; Dean, DesChamps. McLaughlin. Back rozv:

Miss Hopkins, Roberts, J., Chappell, Yorke, Conger, Eppes, Buchanan, Fulton, Wicker, Parker. Not photographed : Miss Davis, MissDigges, Miss Tucker, Miss Sharp.

SeniorsPlan* for carrying out long cherished ideals of self

government, formulated in the spring of the Junior year,

were adopted this fall. In hope of creating an atmos-

phere of better understanding among the girls, the seniors

this year have taken an active part in the regulation of

student life. Individually and as a class, they have

devoted this year to the success of this experiment in

student government. Now. no longer in the experimental

stage, these innovations have become a basis for the

realization of present and future ideals at Saint Mary's.

PUBLI

Always interested in the Belles, the Bulletin, and the

Stage Coach, Mr. Moore, in addition to his untiring

advice, gives the final OK on all school publications.

A constant source of astonishment to those ( if

there be any I who do not know Sally Ann, is the

amount of efficiency behind that deceiving gaiety.

Energy and organization are the secrets of her abilitv

to make the task of editing a bi-monthly newspaper run

as smoothly as clock work.

The Bulletin always appears as a surprise package since its production is almost wholly in the hands of one

person, its capable editor. Mary Pincknev. Her keen sense of value in selecting student contributions and her taste

in compiling and editing have made the Bulletin this year a rcord of the best in creative writing ability at Saint Mary's.

With enthusiasm and tact, Jane has surmounted the problems of turning out an annual. Undaunted by rain on

photographing davs, or endless reams of copv on almost every clay, her efficiency and constant hard work have created

the 1946 Stage Coach.

CATIONS

Checking copy, snapshots by the dozen,

scheduling annua! pictures, using Webster's

faithfully, and compiling columns, con-

scientiously performed by the staff editors

and adviser, are the details which make the

publications click.

ORCHESIS

Creative dancing rates as a favorite pastime with the members of Orchesis. Chosen for interest and ability in dance

A KILOWATT HOUR?

That's Easy!

A kilowatt hour is really not difficult

to understand Electricity is measured in

units of pressure (volts) and in units of

current flow (amperes). Multiply these

two together and you have a unit of

power, the watt. The watt is a relatively

small unit and it is customary to use

1000 watts, or a kilowatt as a practical

base of measurement of electricity. A
