The stage of Technology adoption lifecycle, Oculus is in:

We believe that this Oculus Virtual Reality technology is in later part of the chasm as shown below:

This technology has already crossed the early market stage with Virtual reality game developers being the technology enthusiasts. Next was the Visionaries stage with the Giants like Samsung adopting the technology and Facebook acquiring the technology company.

As of August 2014, about 125,000 units of Oculus Virtual reality development kits have been sold. These can be further divided as:

Development Kit 1: 60,000 units

Development Kit 2: 65,000 units; 45,000 units by July 2014 and additional 20,000 units were shipped by August 2014

These development kits were purchased by game developers with a motive of building the gaming software integrating the hardware that oculus offered. Facebook saw an opportunity in this product and went on and acquired oculus. Samsung adopted this technology and with its expertise in screens, created a better product from this and has started shipping that. But the sales figures have not grown much after the development kits were out. The main reason for that is lack of compatibility and support with the available gaming software. Hence the technology went into a chasm. But of lately, with companies like Samsung investing in it, the technology is in later part of the chasm with the potential to land in the bowling alley.
