PROJECT MANAGEMENTPM is general purpose planning technique that is widely used to help the management of projects, particularly ensuring that they are completed on time and within budget.

PROJECT MANAGEMENTPM comprises five main steps :Determine the goalIdentify the activities or tasks to be undertakenEstimate the duration of the activities/tasksDetermine the sequence in which the activities/tasks have to be completed and link them into a model of overall projectDevelop a project plan that provides an overall schedule for the project.

Robert J Cooper;An extremely useful and powerful tool in product development;It splits progress into a series of Stages and Gates to give a well organized and structured flow to the project;Stages are essentially activities within the development process; Gates are decision points (normally in the form of meeting).

The Stage-Gate Model

Scoping the initial market research stage;Build business cases detailing the proposed product and project definition, project justification, and a project plan;Development build business plan;Testing and validation make sure that the project as whole has run smoothly;Launch full commercialization and manufacturing start.

Stages

Quality control check points with Go/Kill/Hold/Modify prioritized decisions;Consist of :deliverables (what the project leader and team must bring to the gate-decision-point);Criteria (against which the project is judged in order to make decision);Drive to outputs allowing the project to move forward to the next stage.
