Staffordshire Cycle Response UnitPresentedwith Life Saving Equipmentby Knights Templar FundraisersFirst aiders in Staffordshire now have newwheels to help them reach people in a medicalemergency plus £2,000 to put towards trainingand events equipment, thanks to a team ofcharity fundraisers from the Knights Templar.

St John Ambulance’s Cycle Response team tookdelivery of three new all-terrain medical responsebicycles to use at events in the county, along with acheque for £2,000 from the Knights Templar ofStaffordshire & Shropshire Province, at apresentation on Monday 2nd February at thecharity’s base in Stafford.

She said: ‘We are very grateful for this generousdonation from the Knights Templar. Our CycleResponders play a vital role in delivering prompt firstaid where it’s most needed at events acrossStaffordshire, so the extra bikes will strengthen ourfleet while the funds will allow us to provide moretraining for volunteers and boost our equipment forevents.’

Gary Read, Provincial Prior for Staffordshire andShropshire Knights Templar said: ‘We are delightedto be raising funds and increasing the awareness ofthis hugely valuable service across bothcounties and as a part of the UK wide network offirst responders.’

Yarlet Stoves in Staffordshire opened its doors to new andold customers in September last year. The company is adirect development from its successful constructioncompany, Capitall Property Maintenance, and Keith’s(co-owner of the company) reputation as a highlyregarded HETAS registered installer in Staffordshire andthe surrounding areas.

Keith and his wife Sharon decided to open a showroomat Yarlet following a chance meeting with the owner ofMalibu Hot Tubs, who shares the other half of the buildingwith the Yarlet team. For many years Keith had beenasked if he had a showroom for potential clients to viewsolid fuel appliances, so when this opportunity arose hehad no hesitation in taking up the offer.

With only 3 weeks before opening it’s doors, Keith andhis team worked fervently to have the showroom up andrunning. Customer’s have been delighted to see the richdiversity of solid fuel stoves on offer, along with prices tomatch all budgets. Having staff who are knowledgeablein the installation of stoves along with guidance onconstruction has also proved to be very popular withclients.

In December, Yarlet stoves were delighted to be offeredthe Staffordshire dealership for Chesney’s solid fuel

appliances. As such, Yarlet Stoves is the only authorisedstockist for Chesney’s in Staffordshire. Being given thedealership is a great testament to the team’sdetermination and quality of workmanship they provide toall customer’s. Chesney’s is established as the UK’sleading supplier of luxury stoves and it’s commitment togive outstanding service is mirrored by Yarlet Stoves.

In order to showcase the superb array of quality stovesthat Chesney’s manufacture, Keith and his team have builta dedicated section in the showroom for their display. Thestoves vary in size, colour and styles, incorporating bothcontemporary and traditional. Customer’s can choosefrom multi-fuel or wood burning only, to suit their needs.

Yarlet Stoves also showcases the new AGA steel range,British made stoves from Dunsley and Merlin along withcontinental and scandinavian stoves. Organisers of the 31st Stafford HalfMarathon have hailed it as thebiggest and best yet.

Huge crowds of people lined a new13.1 mile route to cheer on more than2,400 runners on Sunday 22nd March. The race was won for a fourth timeby Tipton Harrier Ben Gamble whocrossed the finish line in 1:07.39.

The first female to cross the finish linewas Huncote Harrier Nicki Nealonwith a time of 1:21.24. And this year’srace had a global flavour with Spanishinternational triathlete Pau CastellvellBella coming in fourth place.

Families and youngsters added tothe atmosphere on the day with morethan 500 taking part in mile-long funrun in the town centre dressed as theirfavourite heroes and heroines.

Chief Executive of raceorganisers Stafford Borough Council,Ian Thompson, said; “This was the

biggest and best half marathon wehave staged. The crowds created anamazing atmosphere to help motivatethe runners and cement this as one ofthe top races in the region’s sportingcalendar. It was also a great day forme as my daughter completed her firsthalf marathon.

He added “Congratulations to all whotook part and those who raisedthousands of pounds for charity.”

Once the runners headed out of thetown centre they continued to becheered on by spectators along theroute with residents handing outdrinks and energy snacks outside theirhomes.

A new route was designed for thisyear’s race due major road workstaking place on the usual courseand the borough council’s Head ofLeisure and Culture, Adam Hill, saidthe council received positive feedbackregarding the new circuit.

He said; “A lot of runners havecommented how much they enjoyedthe new course and the increasednumber of people along it. I’d estimatethere was around 25,000 peoplecheering on the runners in the towncentre and out on the route.

As well as the cheering crowds, runners were spurred on by musicwith a DJ van accompanying them oncertain parts of the course and a ‘junkdrum’ band playing for them in VictoriaPark as they closed in on the finish.

Prices As Transparent As Lenses! When it comes to buyingglasses it can be very difficultto tell what you are gettingfor your money. If you buya frame with a recognisedbrand it’s a little easier tocompare prices and see thatyou’re getting value formoney but, as the vastmajority of frames don’t carrya designer name or familiarlabel, this is the exceptionrather than the rule.

It’s even more complicatedwhen it comes to lenses – whilemost people will be familiarwith the name ‘Kodak’ andmaybe ‘Nikon’ and ‘Zeiss’,most lenses are unbranded, making it almost impossibleto compare like with like. Thesituation is further confusedbecause some opticians pricetheir glasses complete withlenses where others chargeseparately for frames andlenses. Thankfully, astringent set of BritishStandards governs the qualityof all lenses sold in this countryso, regardless of make, youcan be sure that your lenseswill meet the requirements foraccuracy of power and imagequality.

At Direct Specs we try tomake it as clear as possible forcustomers to see what they aregetting:

We offer a simple completeprice for all single visionglasses.

Our designer and brandedframes have recognised namesrather than something dreamtup by a marketing department.

We can supply any type ofpremium lens, so if you requirea Zeiss, Hoya, Nikon, Kodak orany other lens, you cancompare our prices directly.

We offer ‘two for the price ofone’ on every pair of glasses -you don’t have to choose froma certain price range and youget an identical pair, or any

other pair up to the same value– even with designer frames.

We have an up-to-date pricecomparison chart in store thatshows the best deals on offerfrom our competitors and howwe can beat them all!
