I want to wish everyone a Merry Happy Month of December and hope however you celebrate this time of year that you are happy, healthy and safe. As we said in the last issue, the 2019 budget was approved to allow the assessments to stay the same for 2019 but that is not without challenges and some compromises. We have a game plan, and with our membership and residents help, those challenges and compromises will be barely noticed. So be patient as we work towards our goals of being low maintenance with high appeal. Understand that before we can make improvements, we must first remove the decayed and outdated then stand back and truly see what we have and where we need to go. As always you are more than invited to help. Any and all suggestions and volunteers are welcomed and desired. The Board of Directors consists of just 7 of the 624 owners here at the Springs. The ARC consists of 6 members two of which are also board members, the Due Process consists of 4 members not part of any other committee, and the finance committee has 3 members. That is a total of 18 members participating on the necessary required Committees plus a handful of members and residents that volunteer where needed and for the Community Functions activities. So, that comes to about 25 to 30 volunteers representing 624 households. That is just not good enough. This year while you’re contemplating what you can change or improve in 2019 how about giving some time to your community. In addition, to help with costs, please complete the OPT-IN electronic notification form you are about to receive. Just by participating in the electronic notification, the POA will save approximately $3 to $5 on the annual mailing for each household that participates. There is also an update to the Architectural Standards Manual coming out early next year which requires distribution to all members/owners. E-mailing that manual will save another $3 to $5 per household. If all participate, that is about a $6,000 savings right there. We are also going to be updating the management software in 2019 which will go along with the Opt-In for electronic notifications so that billing, ARC approvals/denials and compliance violations can be instantly emailed. This should help with communications and expedite corrections and applications. It is going to take a few months to completely implement so that gives us time to collect those opt in forms. No matter what or how you celebrate here’s to a great Holiday Season and a Happy New Year. Me-I’m hoping for a Merry Christmas for all. Respectfully,Peter Sacco, President,Springs of Suntree POA

Important Community InformationOfficial Electronic Communication and Membership Voting Coming

Soon to Springs of Suntree POA

OPT IN form for electronic notifications and voting access coming soonAll owners of homes in the Springs of Suntree please complete the Electronic

Notification and Voting OPT IN form and return it to the Springs of Suntree office ASAP. The form will be sent with the 2019 budget and payment information and

you can also pick up a copy at the Springs of Suntree office or request it via email. We are looking for maximum participation so that the POA can save $$$$$ on printing and postage. The board was able to approve a budget for 2019 which

kept the quarterly rate the same partially based on the belief that members will opt in and great savings could be gained by eliminating the mailing cost.

THE POOL GOT EGGED Small plastic eggs have been found in the recreational pool waste drain and they could not have gotten there from inside the pool. Someone would have had to put them in the Vak Pak tank where the filters are. No one other than authorized persons are to be by the tanks. Unless you work for the pool company, are on the Board or an existing committee or you are a member of Springs of Suntree staff, you are not an authorized person. The pool was shut down for 3 days and required a separate pump to be brought in so that the remaining eggs and toys could be retrieved. NO SMALL TOYS ARE ALLOWED IN THE POOL AREA--PLEASE. These plastic eggs have cost the POA over $300 for the repairs. The week before, the solar pump stopped pumping heated water into the pool. The pump would prime and come on, but no water was pulling from the roof. Reason? Someone went into the pump house and turned the auto valve off (which can only be done manually) so that “DEAD-HEADED” the pump. This most likely was done by someone trying to help, who thought the pool heater was not working. But no one is to go into the pump house unless authorized to do so. See above for who is authorized. We have put new locks on each pool equipment area but please stay away from it and if you see something say something immediately.

Springs of Suntree Girl Scout Troop 2031 is having a pet supply drive to benefit local animal shelters. Please drop of new toys, food and treats to the donation bin located in the community center lobby. Thank you.

Why are the bushes being removed from around the community center?Starting around the first full week of December, work will be done around the

community center to remove the diseased and brittle Hibiscus and old shrubs. Why? Because they are diseased and have lived their life cycle. To continue treating and fertilizing them is only adding cost with little or no benefit. All but the palms, ornamental grasses, crotons and Ligustrum trees will be removed. Later in the year we will look at installing Florida native ornamental grasses, if found necessary. This will not only save on fertilization, pest control and treatment for disease, but will cut the detailing portion of the landscaping service by about 85%. In addition to the landscaping cost savings, limiting the plants around the pool area will help with the pool maintenance and upkeep as well as allow for better visual for security. The pool is surrounded by the wooded area so privacy at pool side is not a question. Many new developments are going with minimal landscaping around their pool areas for those exact reasons.

We are also removing some of the larger “junk plant” piles along Pinehurst on the south side. Why? Because they are covered by invasive vines and the POA mows around them which affect the time it takes to service the area affecting the cost. Not all trees/clusters will be removed but the larger more over-taken ones near the eastern entrance to Fargo up to the San Marino entrance area will be.

If you wish to work on a committee regarding the landscaping, please attend a Board meeting and volunteer to help.

Hundred Acre Hollows, Inc -- PROTECT/RESTORE/ENGAGEHAH will be open on Dec 2 and 16 from 3 to 5 p.m. for “Sunset in the Hollows.” Please note the earlier hour due to the time of the sunset in December. January 6 and 20 will have the same early hours. It is a beautiful time of year to walk in HAH. If you’ve never visited, please come out!On Sunday, Nov 4, the Audubon Society had an “Audubon in Action Day.” They planted a native plant garden in the southeast corner of HAH. The garden is already attracting new birds, butterflies, bees, and other native pollinators. This is how we are restoring the habitat and protecting the wildlife. There are two rain barrels there that have to be filled regularly since we are in the dry season. This kind of garden will be planted in other areas of HAH in the future.

We engaged the public and restored the habitat with our work days. We had several more groups of people cutting back Brazilian Pepper tree branches in Nov. Others cut back vines from the fence. Thank you to everyone who helped on our work days. By cutting back the pepper trees, several native Sabal Palm trees were uncovered so that they can thrive now. The three brush piles in the basins for small animal habitat are getting really big. We will continue to have work days during these cooler months.

HAH Inc has just applied for a grant for a native plant butterfly garden inside the entrance. We will do the planting in the spring in the beginning of the rainy season. We will need helpers to put gutters on the existing kiosk to fill the barrels and construct the drip hose system. Whether or not we win the grant money, we will do this project. Tim and Anna from Native Butterfly Gardens LLC in West Melbourne have made a beautiful plan with blanket flower, dune sunflower, firebush, native porterweed, seaside goldenrod, tropical salvia, wild lime, passion vine and other plants that will grow in the sandy soil and need little irrigation. The black mat at the entrance to HAH ensures the weeds won’t grow where the pepper trees were pulled out.

Our HAH community of interested people continues to grow. We have a Meetup group of 150. There are 504 people who follow our Facebook page. We have 53 active memberships now. If you donated a year ago, please donate again. We invite you to join our cause if you haven’t already. Please join HAH, Inc! Annual Membership suggested donation: Student/Teacher $10, Individual $15, Family $25. You can join online or checks can be sent to: Hundred Acre Hollows, Inc. 1170 Ida Way Melbourne, FL 32940.
