Re: December BOE Report
Presented in the materials for this month’s meeting is a proposed “Draft” calendar for the 2017-2018 school year. This calendar was developed by the Administrative Council and will be shared with staff to obtain feedback prior to our second reading. The calendar is very similar to our calendar for this school year. We have the standard 170 days for students and 183 staff days. The additional staff days are professional development days, back to school preparation days, and a couple of days built in for parent teacher conferences. We have listed possible inclement weather make up days as well. Commencement is set for May 13, 2018. We continue to value having our first semester end prior to our holiday break. By doing so our teachers feel like we are able to prepare adequately for final exams.
On December 13 I attended my first meeting of the MOREnet Executive Council. I was asked to participate as a k-12 representative on this board. The group meets quarterly and advises MOREnet on a variety of issues that are addressed by MOREnet throughout the state. As a district we have been MOREnet members for a long time and this is the avenue in which we receive our broadband connectivity in the district. Additionally, as full service members, we also have access to a multitude of free resources that are used in our libraries and classrooms. Finally, we are able to schedule training with MOREnet staff on many tech related platforms. In February, the district will be having several MOREnet trainers on campus to help facilitate our transition to all things Google. As members, we are able to receive this training at a largely discounted rate, with our only costs being travel costs for their staff to come to us from Columbia, MO.
Included in the packet for this month is a summary of our current random drug testing program. We are in our 5th school year of implementation and I work closely with Mr. Beu our Activities Coordinator to operate the program. We have the same testing company that we started with, although they have since changed names. Their service is affordable and they are easy to communicate with and responsive to our needs.
We are nearing completion of our weight room renovation project. I want to thank Adam Townsend and crew, as well as Joe Alley for working with the coaching staff to plan and schedule the installation of our new video system. The Maryville Education Foundation provided the funding for this project and we now have 6 video monitors in the space for our student athletes to view workout information and videos to show proper technique. We are anxious for the space to be completed, but are waiting on the FEMA Construction phase to end which will bring to a close the renovation of the new weight room space.
The Maryville Education Foundation will be meeting on Wednesday, December 21. The group will be discussing our Teacher of the Year process and candidates from each building. One of our members will be asked to participate in the final selection process for District Teacher of the Year. The Foundation has made a financial commitment to support the building and district teacher of the year as well as the district staff member of the year. The Foundation will also be developing the timeline for the annual teacher mini grant program that is funded by the Foundation.

The special education teachers have been busy keeping up with their paperwork and teaching responsibilities. I
appreciate how all of the special education teachers balance the teaching and paperwork side of their positions as I
know it is a huge challenge.
The MHS Life Skills classes continue their wonderful Spoofy’s Beans coffee delivery, which continues to be a highlight
for many staff, and a great way for our students to practice their on-the-job skills. Thanks to Candace and Alexis
Boeh for their initiative and support for our students, and thanks to Thom Alvarez and Craig Borey for their support
of the program as well!
The Life Skills classes from EFES, MMS and MHS will all take a field trip on 12/12 to the Hallmark Kaleidoscope art
studio, and to the Coterie Theater to see Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer musical. Should be a fun day!
Michelle McCollum and Kenna Parman have been working on MOSIS/Core Data information that pertains to special
education. The December cycle includes disability and placement information as well as many other data categories
that are tracked by MOSIS. Michelle has gathered information regarding every student who receives special
education services in our district and double checked their information in SIS to ensure it is accurate. Kenna does
such a wonderful job of keeping all of the different reports updated and certified by their due dates. Thank you to
Kenna and Michelle!!
The EXPO Parent Night on 11/17 went really well! We had 18 out of 28 families in attendance and it was great fun to
see how proud the students were of their work. A big thank you to Mrs. Corson for sending out the November
newsletter and for the preparation involved in organizing the Parent Night. We plan to have another EXPO Parent
Night in the spring.
I met with Lisa Warner, who is MHS’s representative for the Pre-Employment Transition Services program (Pre-ETS)
through the MU Hook Center for Educational Renewal, which helps students prepare for post-secondary
employment, about job shadow opportunities. She has been a great resource for our students and teachers, and I’m
excited to see what the future holds!
Part of my role as Director is to draw on my school psychology background to provide behavioral assessment services
to the special education department when needed for initial evaluations or re-evaluations. I have provided
behavioral assessment services for 27 evaluations to date, and am also helping teams navigate challenging behavior
when it becomes an issue in the buildings.

Re: December 2016 BOE Report
On November 21st, our second grade students hosted their Pumpkin Market. This project teaches economics as our students make goods that their parents then purchase. They were able to raise over $400 to purchase toys for the Toys for Tots program.
On November 22nd, our first grade students participated in their annual Tasting Feast. This is a culminating activity after they have learned about the different food groups through the MU Extension office nutrition program.
This month we have begun to introduce Sam, the therapy dog, to our students. Sam is visiting our school twice a month to sit with students, let them read with him, let them walk him, etc. This is a great opportunity and a huge motivator for our students that we hope will provide great benefits for them at school.
We are getting into the holiday spirit at EFES. Door decorations are going up in our halls, teachers are taking some creative class pictures for families, and we have a special activity planned for the 12 days leading up to Christmas break.
The month of December is when we celebrate and learn about the character word COMPASSION. This year we are asking all of our classes to come up with a compassion project to show others kindness this season. We have had students visiting nursing homes, creating projects and decorations for elderly citizens in our community, collecting food for the ministry center, etc. We’re really proud of our students and what they have done to show compassion toward others this month.
Attendance rate for 90-90 is 93.8%.

Basketball season has gone very well. Both our boys and girls teams have had a lot of success and won many
games. We have three games this week to round out the season. I would like to thank our coaches for doing
a great job of coaching our kids.

wrestling team and they did a great job this year. We would like to thank Mr. Drake for doing a great job
coaching them and also Mr. Beu for providing them with new singlets and warm-ups. It was a nice upgrade.

enjoy the experience and were able to see many different kinds of art with Mrs. DeMott.
Our staff has donated money this year to help several of our families during the holiday season. We feel very
blessed that we are able to help so many families during this time. It is our hope that we will brighten their

become a Leader in Me school. We are excited to host them and are hoping to gets some ideas from them as

past month. Our Learning Center students connected with our Culinary Arts and FACS classes planning, purchasing
ingredients, and cooking a meal while having the student’s family’s here to partake in a great thanksgiving meal. The
Community Blood Drive was here and held in the NTS commons on December 14th, and sponsored by FCCLA / FACS

weather sits in. House build is continuing on schedule. House is closed in, with work being done on outside siding
currently.

Kansas City. Morning and afternoon classes working on several different projects along with the restore project to also
get traditional “bent and dent” work.

Adult / Community Education / GO program -The Winter/Spring brochure will be inserted in The Post Newspaper on
January 3rd. Lori Tally recently attended MACT, the professional organization for schools that obligate the states
Missouri Works funds. Lori Tally and NTS was also mentioned in the Missouri Works Customize Training Program flyer
about the great work she has done helping Nucor LMP with training funds. GO program averaged 120 kids per day for
November. Great job Mrs. Tally/Mr. Piper and GO staff along with Mr. Lynn and Mrs. Walker for coordinating all efforts
to help create opportunities for our kids and services for our parents. GO is collaborating with High School FTA / Hound
Howling City organization to do gingerbread making contest and some other. GO potluck was Sunday December 4th.
Utilized this time to adopt a family and help some EFES family’s that could use extra help during this time of the year.
Great job GO staff.
Guidance / Placement /GED - Mr. Jackson and I finished up sending school tour visits this past week. Mr. Jackson has
been working with regional guidance counselor on our yearly resume writing classes that are offered through CTE

schools on tour dates for this spring. 8th grade and sophomores will be touring. Continue to test adults twice per
month on Hi-Set test and compass testing as needed.
To: Dr. Becky Albrecht, Mr. Steve Klotz, and the Maryville R-II Board of Education
The winter sports season is in full springs. Our participation numbers in all high school sports have risen slightly from last year. I have attended several practices and observed our athletes and coaches preparing with great enthusiasm.
New TV’s are being installed in the high school weight room. We have added several new resistance bands and plyometric boxes provided by the SAB. I am exploring some cost effective ways to re-cover some of the torn upholstery on our flat benches. We are also looking at some options to replace one of our elliptical machines.
The MEC schools are working on transitioning St. Pius into the conference beginning in the 18-19 school year. We are developing conference schedules and beginning the task of assigning officials for the 2018-2020 school years.
With the resignation of Coach Collins we will begin the search for a new head boys’ soccer coach for the 2017 season. We want to thank Coach Collins for his 16 years of service to the boys’ soccer program in Maryville.
We are making preparations for the upcoming quad state wrestling tournament which will take place on January 28th. We are expecting 11 schools to participate in this year’s event.
I am working with Ms. Lorek and our school nurses at using a digital program offered by MSHSAA to maintain and track our physical forms as well as the other various medical forms and releases required for each athlete. This will be a free service offered to all schools that are associated with MSHSAA.
I am finalizing spring schedules and issuing games contracts for next year. We have been selected to host the girls’ district soccer tournament this spring as well as the boys’ district golf tournament. The district baseball tournament will be played in St. Joseph at Phil Welch Stadium and Missouri Western.
Go Spoofhounds!

Re: Maintenance and Custodial Report
The custodians at MHS and EFE have worked extra hard this last month to help cover the extra load that comes
with being short a co-worker. We are happy to have Sharon McCrary back ahead of schedule at MHS. Sona
Money has been the go to person while Sharon was out for the high school, which meant many trips up and
down the hall. The maintenance crew has continued to fill in when possible with the custodial work.
We completed some repairs on the various ice machines in the district.
The maintenance crew assisted the tech team with installing the new televisions in the MHS weight room along
with the necessary wiring.
We were able to complete our end of season work on our sports fields. This included aerating the fields and top
dressing about 200 tons of sand. We also chose to winterize the irrigation system in house this year which saved
around $300.
Freezing weather signaled time to shut down the cooling towers at MMS and MHS. We took this opportunity to
rebuild the large cooling tower pump at MMS. This also gave me a chance to calculate the savings from
installing the subtraction meters on both towers this spring. This figure was better than I expected at $2159.
These savings should continue yearly with no further expense by the district.
The cold weather has placed keeping heating equipment operating in district as a top priority. We have had to
make multiple repairs in this area.
We were able to test and installed some new part on the MMS scoreboard.
I took some time this month to familiarize myself with the District’s electrical bills. There was a large
discrepancy between what we spent lighting the game field and the practice field. After some back and forth
between KCPL and me it became clear the accounts were coded differently. The local KCPL representative came
out to verify the meter took care of strictly outdoor lighting. The change was then approved. This change will
save the district around $2100 yearly.
We have also been getting our snow and ice removal equipment ready with the hope we won’t need it
