A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL! This is the Last Issue of the Spokesman Until After Christmas!

The Next Issue of the Spokesman Will Be Jan. 1, 2018.

There will be no Club Meetings on Dec. 21st or 28th.

Our Next Meeting is January 4th at Centennial Station.

William Mangum has rightly earned the distinc-

tion as one of the South’s finest artist with a

hugely successful career that spans more than

four decades.

He began his journey as an artist with a 59¢ tray

of watercolors as a senior at UNC in Greensboro

and has developed into one of the premier land-

scape and architectural artist of his time. Man-

gum has created more than 3,000 original paint-

ings of his beloved North Carolina, as well as

scenes from abroad in Austria, Bermuda,

Greece, Italy, United Kingdom and numerous places in the Caribbean and Asia.

Nine books have been published paying homage to the beautiful places Man-

gum has captured. His latest book, Reflections, is a true celebration of his be-

loved state. Collaborating with celebrated author Ralph Marston, this volume

contains seventy-five of his latest paintings and encouraging prose to inspire

readers each day.

Mangum has exhibited his artwork in more than 30 states throughout the coun-

try, including prominent New York museums and art organizations like the

National Arts Club, Society of Illustrators, Allied Artists of America, Salmagundi

Club and Knickerbocker Artists League.

Stephen Doherty, the editor of American Artist Magazine said of Bill . . . . .

“Mangum is part of a great tradition in American landscape painting. Each time

he enters his studio with paints, brushes, paper and ideas, he creates a lasting

record of the world around us.

In 2013 Bill was licensed by Klaussner Furniture to create an “An Artist Inspired

Home Collection”. This past October his sixth collection debuted at the Interna-

tional Furniture Market with rave reviews. (continued on page two)

Something was different last week at Rotary. Was it the site of buses in the parking lot of HPCC? Was it that there were TWO buffet lines, one with chicken fingers and french fries? Was it that there was a sea of elf hats in the ballroom . . . . or the chatter of children’s voices? Well, all of the above were things that made Rotary different. It was the Annual Children’s Christmas Party and there were teachers and counselors and excited elementary students everywhere! There were a lot of smiling Rotarians too! Jeff Fuller ran the show Thursday and started by informing Jordan Lessard that this was a rare Ro-tary meeting where he wasn’t the youngest in attendance. The kids all joined us as we stood for the pledge of allegiance after which Gene Williams offered our invocation. And in a shake up of our normal procedure, we recited the Four Way Test then and not at the end of the meeting. A wise idea it was indeed since it exposed all the kids to our signature closing. At the end of the meeting they have one thing on their minds . . . . Santa Claus! Our Master of Ceremonies, Van Denton, took over at that point and started by acknowledging celebri-ties in the crowd. First was Carol Andrews Hughes who was a colleague from Fox 8 in years past. The second was Lebron James . . . . . well, a teacher that really resembled him any-way. Smiling Bell Ringers!

Julie and her helper Amelia lit up the area around Harris Teeter. How could you not

drop anything in the kettle when you encounter such a cute young lady

ringing the bell? The three dedicated bell ringers below, Rick, George, and

Stewart , look to be enjoying each other’s company as they too spend a Saturday Ringing the bell for the Salvation Army.

Another Birthday Boy

Van then introduced our entertainment, Nathan Ryan and the Whomevers (as in whomever he can get to sing with him). From Frosty the Snowman to 42 Monkeys, a great audience participation song, the trio ramped things up to a high energy show. There was arm waving, fist pumping, dancing, singing, and hand clapping as the kids really got into the perform-ance, as did a lot of the Rotarians too. If these kids still took naps, they’d be ready for one. I think a few Rotarians were ready for one too! Ryan’s band eventually turned things back over to the emcee, Van. Drum roll please . . . . . . Van then prepared the crowd for the Christmas Eve forecast by reminding us that there is but an 8% chance of snow on Christmas Day or Eve. But he reminded us of the 5-6” snowfall for Christmas 2010. It can happen! Then he started in on this week’s forecast. I watched kids with smiles and those with crossed fingers as he gave his detailed progno-sis of some white stuff this week. Friday night’s call for a dusting to less than an inch wasn’t what they wanted to hear, but it was better than noth-ing. He then introduced that jolly old man with the long white beard and rosy cheeks. Immediately, the sound of jingling bells could be heard from the hall as Santa made his way through the room. The kids all lined up nicely as they stood well behaved waiting their turn to see the guy they really came to see in the first place. Ho! Ho! Ho! Rotarians exchanged warm wishes for a Merry Christmas and headed back to work . . . though I expect most would have rather been in line to see Santa themselves! HO! HO! HO! Merry Christmas!
