The Splendour of God’s Holiness (2)
Holy! Holy! Holy!
-
Worship the Lord
in the splendour of His holiness
-
Holy Time
• Genesis 2.3. And God blessed the
seventh day and made it holy
-
Holy space
• Exodus 3:5 “Do not come near;
take your sandals off your feet, for
the place on which you are
standing is holy ground.”
-
Holy people
• 1 Peter 2.9 But you are a chosen
people, a royal priesthood, a holy
nation, a people belonging to God,
that you may declare the praises of
him who called you out of darkness
into his wonderful light
-
Desensitized to holiness
• We have handled holy things for so
long that our hands have become
cauterized to holiness. . if you're not
periodically shocked by what God
says and does then you're probably
not listening to God.,
-
Leviticus 9.23-10.2
• And Moses and Aaron went into the tent
of meeting, and when they came out
they blessed the people, and *the glory
of the LORD appeared to all the people.
-
Leviticus 9.23-10.2
• And fire came out from before the
LORD and consumed the burnt offering
and the pieces of fat on the altar, and
when all the people saw it, they shouted
and fell on their faces.
-
Leviticus 9.23-10.2
• Now Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron,
each took his censer and put fire in it and
laid incense on it and offered unauthorized
fire before the LORD, which he had not
commanded them. And fire came out from
before the LORD and consumed them,
and they died before the LORD
-
2 Sam 6.5-7
• And the anger of the LORD was
kindled against Uzzah, and God
struck him down there because of his
error, and he died there beside the
ark of God.
-
Don’t touch
• Numbers 4:15 (ESV) — 15 And when
Aaron and his sons have finished covering
the sanctuary and all the furnishings of the
sanctuary, as the camp sets out, after that
the sons of Kohath shall come to carry
these, but they must not touch the holy
things, lest they die.
-
Isaiah too
• 6.1-5 In the year that King Uzziah died I
saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high
and lifted up; and the train of his robe
filled the temple. Above him stood the
seraphim. And one called to another and
said: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory
-
Isaiah too
• And the foundations of the thresholds
shook at the voice of him who called, and
the house was filled with smoke. And I
said: “Woe is me! For I am lost
-
The incredible good news
• Isaiah 57.15 For thus says *the One who is
high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity,
whose name is Holy: “I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of
a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the
spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of
the contrite….
-
The incredible good news
• 66.2
“This is the one I esteem: he who is humble
and contrite in spirit, and trembles at my
word.”
-
A revived spirit
• 2 Sam 6.9-14 And David was angrybecause the LORD had burst forth against Uzzah. And David was afraid of the LORD that day, and he said, “How can the ark of the LORD come to me?” So David was not willing to take the ark of the LORD into the city of David.
-
A revived spirit
• So David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-edom to the city of David with rejoicing And David danced before the LORD with all his might.
-
Enough, Isaiah!
• Isaiah 30:10-11 They say to the seers,
“See no more visions!” and to the
prophets, “Give us no more visions of
what is right! Tell us pleasant things,
prophesy illusions. Leave this way, get
off this path, and stop confronting us
with the Holy One of Israel!”
-
So choose this day
• Isa 66.2 This is the one I esteem: he who is humble and contrite in spirit, and trembles at my word.
• Isa 30.11 “Give us no more visions of what is right! Tell us pleasant things, prophesy illusions. Leave this way, get off this path, and stop confronting us with the Holy One of Israel!”
-
Tremble before holiness and live
exuberantly; soothe yourself with
illusions and shrivel
One liner from the sermon:
-
• Who is like you, O Lord
• Clothed with splendor and light?
• Who is like you, O Lord
• Armed with power and might?
-
• And who are we, O Sovereign Lord
• That we should know your love?
• Consuming fire, O holy majesty
• We know your love
-
• How great you are, O Lord
• Your mercies are ever new
• Who are we, and who is like You?
